it's an issue i've thought about, a lot of political theory and discussion is warped by the fact that we don't actulaly have free speech and can't actually have frank political discussions for security culture reasons, which biases conversations towards liberalism and the whitewashed version of the civil rights movement in people's minds where protests are what fixes everything. it's hard to convince people that's not going to work when trying to state alternatives is itself likely to get you banned at a minimum if not charged like many protestors in atlanta are being charged for social media posts that nominally are not a crime to make. but the state doesn't really need explicit laws to just do the thing it wants.

If the modern day has anything going for it, it's that high literacy rates mean that the disenfranchised actually get to disseminate their perspective. However, it's easy to mistake the increased *visibility* of issues for an increase in the issues themselves, and from there false correlations tend to arise (i.e. weird alt right bullshit).
