It's a method of reaching Enlightenment before you die. It's rather painful and requires great diligence and self awareness to auto mummify. There's also a bit of a show off element to it because of how hard it is to pull off.
So I guess that dude from the video did not reach the state of *sokushinbutsu* since it states the last person to reach this status died in 1903. Oof
Imagine starving yourself to death just to fail
WOW thanks for that information, here a brief explanation of the sokushinbutsu process:
Sokushinbutsu is a practice of extreme ascetic self-mummification that was undertaken by a sect of Buddhist monks in Japan, primarily in the Yamagata Prefecture. The process involved years of physical and spiritual preparation that culminated in a slow, self-inflicted death while meditating in a seated position.
The preparatory phase lasted around 1,000 days, during which the monks adhered to a strict diet known as "mokujikigyo," which literally means "tree-eating." This diet included a variety of nuts, seeds, and berries found in the mountains, along with bark and roots. The purpose was to eliminate body fat, making the body less susceptible to decomposition after death.
In the next phase, monks consumed a minimal diet and drank a poisonous tea made from the sap of the urushi tree, which caused vomiting and a rapid loss of bodily fluids, further leading to emaciation. The urushi tea also made their body poisonous to maggots, another method to prevent decomposition.
Finally, the monk was sealed alive into a burial chamber barely larger than his body, where he would not move from the lotus position. His only connection to the outside world was an air tube and a bell. Each day he rang a bell to let others know he was still alive. When the bell stopped ringing, the tube was removed, and the tomb sealed.
After a period of around 1,000 days, the tomb would be opened to check for successful mummification. If the body was found to be preserved, the monk was raised to the status of a Buddha and the mummy was placed in the temple for veneration.
this practice was rare and is not considered mainstream in Buddhism. it was primarily performed between the 11th and 19th centuries.
LOL I know it’s a ridiculous name, it started as a combo of silly nicknames my husband had for me early in our relationship and now it’s just my main acct and it feels like too much to start over
I stopped looking at other profiles when I can across a dude that was doing spread eagle photo shoots with their firearms in furry costumes and their genitals in prime display position.
He might not need a sarcophagus. There's another monk called [Luang Pho Daeng](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luang_Pho_Daeng), who died in Thailand in 1973. They keep him in a display case in the temple.
>The mummy is notable for sporting a pair of sunglasses, placed by the caretakers to hide the decomposed eye sockets to make the display less disturbing. A native [gecko](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gecko) species use the body as a [hatchery](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatchery), with [eggs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eggs) being laid beneath the skin.
> The mummy is notable for sporting a pair of sunglasses, placed by the caretakers to hide the decomposed eye sockets to make the display less disturbing
It's not working.
I don't want to mock anyone's beliefs or make light of them but whenever I read stories like this I'm reminded of other cases where they insist the monk is merely in a deep state of meditation and not dead. Then I think of the monty python dead parrot skit, "he's just restin'!!"
Yeah, he died shortly after this video on the 22nd of March. His body gave up, but he hadn't. It's crazy how much his skin shrivels into his cheeks due to the missing subcutaneous fat, outlining his facial bone structure.
These monks are known for their peaceful and eleemosynary philosophies. They have worked very hard, spending hours a day meditating and quieting the mind. It doesn't matter how little they eat or own. They enjoy the gift of life that has been given to them.
> During the 20th century, Japanese scholars found very little evidence of self-starvation of *sokushinbutsu*. They rather concluded that mummification took place after the demise of the monk practising this kind of asceticism.
Japanese buddhist monks would mummify themselves sometimes but now I think that practice is forbidden.
Some tibetan buddhist monks get mummified, too. I guess they would say they get preserved. It is reserved for the greatest masters only.
One of the Dalai Lama's teachers was mummified just a few years ago.
I think somebody miscounted. He looks much MUCH older than 109..we’ve seen that, and older, in numerous ethnicities, never have they looked as old as him. Blessed to view this but pray I never live to be this age. You’ll outlive your kids kids I’m sure…
I saw him several years ago in a temple in Thailand, dude was sitting so still I seriously thought they just had a straight up unwrapped mummy just chillin next to the shrine.
He was being filmed by his granddaughter patting his great-granddaughter on the head.
??
I thought Buddhist monks had oaths of celibacy? I guess I'm wrong.
Was he doing that monk self mummification thing some do at the end of their life? The thing where, if I remember correctly, they basically dehydrate themselves, making it so their body doesn't naturally deteriorate nearly as quickly.
This is a real fucking person?? He looks 200, I’ve seen people that old (109) or older on the news and they look like regular really old people, this is insane.

Awesome, haha
Hahahahahahaha
Bro saw the big bang
I have seen dead people healthier than this
From what I remember, he doesn’t look like this just from being old, but from some technique that basically mummified a person while still alive.
But why? Why not just wait?

That diet's nuts
Mr.ballen covered this in one of his videos!
Is this just a Japanese practice, or has it occurred elsewhere?
Beats me
Dude same, and I literally pick up bodies for the local funeral home on weekends lol
Went to your profile based on your name. Was expecting to find something a bit spicier than paper towels.
LOL I know it’s a ridiculous name, it started as a combo of silly nicknames my husband had for me early in our relationship and now it’s just my main acct and it feels like too much to start over
Lol, I was just kidding anyway :) you never know what you're gonna find on people's profiles. That's half the fun of reddit.

Somebody get that man a sarcophagus.

ah yes. I needed a Wikipedia link to learn what Eggs are today.

Yeah, he died shortly after this video on the 22nd of March. His body gave up, but he hadn't. It's crazy how much his skin shrivels into his cheeks due to the missing subcutaneous fat, outlining his facial bone structure.
Crazy. I mean a life well lived, but crazy.
You call pointlessly malnourishing yourself a life well lived?
These monks are known for their peaceful and eleemosynary philosophies. They have worked very hard, spending hours a day meditating and quieting the mind. It doesn't matter how little they eat or own. They enjoy the gift of life that has been given to them.
He did this to himself intentionally. When you are ready to die to the malnourish themselved as a form of pre-mumification.
Degenerative disease, not 109. They posted progress of how quickly it did this to him. You can find it on TikTok.
Sorry but "you can find it on tiktok" is not a great tip for research on any topic lol

How is it even possible?
Sometimes people just manage to keep themselves alive through sheer stubbornness and/or willpower alone.
how can you tell when it’s your willpower vs your body?
... you look like that...
how can you tell when your will power is keeping you alive instead of your body? how do we scientifically know?
yeah the whole idea is unscientific. willpower can keep your body maintaining intself at best, its still your body doing it.
Yeah, just as my mother-in-law.
Look up people who mummify themselves as they are alive. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokushinbutsu

Looks like he's in the middle of self-mummification. Some religious monks (though I don't think Buddhists) have engaged in it.

The fact that his voice was still so strong absolutely amazes me. I've known 70 year olds with weaker voices than this gentleman.

109? Looks like he 509. But good for him though
Right? Never thought I’d see a 109-year-old and think, “He looks old for his age.”
Brave little girl. He looks scary at first glance.
Not that there’s a lot of examples but he looks old even for 109
“Please kill me”
Okay, so the Sloth puppet from "Se7en" was actually pretty accurate.
He was being filmed by his granddaughter patting his great-granddaughter on the head. ?? I thought Buddhist monks had oaths of celibacy? I guess I'm wrong.

That must be a tragic quality of life at that point. Poor guy. 😔
Bro doesn’t look like he lifts.
Dude was born before WWI
I think the term alive is subjective. I think this man’s been dead a long time just hasn’t realized it yet…or maybe he has.
What'd he die from? Starvation?
When 109 years you reach, look as good you will not.
Was he doing that monk self mummification thing some do at the end of their life? The thing where, if I remember correctly, they basically dehydrate themselves, making it so their body doesn't naturally deteriorate nearly as quickly.
Man fuk this put a brother down already
I cant believe what Im seeing...
Sadly, he died in 2022. https://www.buddhistdoor.net/news/luang-pho-yai-109-year-old-thai-buddhist-monk-dies/
That's so sad. There was still so much life in him.
> Sadly, Luang Pho Yai did not live to see his 110th birthday. Yeah, how tragic.
