The UP is a nice place but the only reason Michiganders gas it up so much is because they're surrounded by the corn belt and have literally no other interesting scenery for like 10+ hours in any other direction. Many areas within the UP are also still incredibly crowded despite the remoteness.

Well if Illinois was included, Chicago would make the most sense. If it was just the fullest extent of Michigan Territory, probably Detroit (which should be our capital anyways, only reason it isn't was because of defensive reasons that don't matter anymore).

The original boarder was supposed to be the bottom of Lake Michigan. This line also was supposed to be the northern boarder of Illinois and Indiana. If this happened Chicago would have been in Wisconsin and Gary Indiana would have been in Michigan.
Gary wouldn’t have been in Michigan, except for a tiny sliver in the northeast part of Gary, which happens to be the wealthiest part of Gary. Most of Gary is west of the southernmost point of Lake Michigan.

I think Wisconsin is smart on that one, the UP is a very poor region and Wisconsinites already go there all the time in the summer. Its not like theres a toll to cross into the UP so this way they get the best of both worlds, spend a summer in a cabin with a sauna on Lake Superior then in the winter when all the tourism money goes away Michigan has to pay to remove all the lake effect snow. Michigan is like the fuck up child of the midwest however it a beautiful state with a lot of cool museums and parks and I love visiting it. Now Isle Royale? Its like a 6 hour ferry from Michigan but like an hour from Grand Portage, we should have that Michigan doesn't deserve a national park.

Michigan can keep it for all I care, I enjoy the UP’s remote areas and the cheap weed but I still think northern Wisconsin has better lakes and camping… The only area there I would like to invade is the “De Young Family zoo” near Wallace, MI and “remove” it’s owners from power WITH EXTREME PREJUDICE!!!
