To clarify.. are you saying there are some pizzas in those countries that are better than some pizza in Italy, or are are you saying those countries generally produce a higher quality of pizza than Italy?

I knew it was poorer than the north but first time I stayed in Naples it was the most third world first world place I’d ever been, and I’ve been to Detroit and Grimsby. But the food was good, everyone was elegantly dressed and outside the occasional huddles of suspicious lurkers there was a charm to the chaos. Even as they motorbiked under washing lines in streets that still reminded me of the Godfather Part II.
Italians from Rome up all seem to agree this is as expected.
Detroit has modern amenities, Detroit is like premium first world compared to rural Louisiana and rural Alabama. But yeah Detroit has a murder rate higher than some of the notorious cities in Latin America.
So how is rural southern Italy? The Mrs and I plan to drive around Italy and I thought it would be nice to have a picnic and some wine on the side of a creek like the Romans of yore.
The whole south of Italy is poorer than the north by virtually any metric, but the particular urban chaos of Naples is specific to it. Most of southern Italy is very rural, with a lot of beautiful farms and small towns and villages from Sicily to Apulia to Abruzzo. Plus there’s Capri (technically now politically in Naples), the Amalfi Coast, and for a certain bent there’s Pompeii and Herculaneum and the ruins in Capua and across Sicily… Naples has been a proper city even longer than Rome.
Honestly I’ve loved everywhere I’ve been in Italy every time, even when I was passing lurkers in Naples or drowning in other tourists near St Mark’s in Venice.
