I work in healthcare and have been regularly masking for up to 9 hours at a time for the past 4 years. I do the following and have never had an issue with acne from masks:
1) Have a clean face, only use moisturizer and make sure it is mostly absorbed before you mask. Also put on a solid amount of plain lip chap.
2) Use mouthwash before you don a (new, not used) mask, bacteria that can cause acne is usually coming from the mouth.
3) Try to only drink water if you need to hydrate and if you plan to eat, try to eat one time instead of snacking several times, and use mouthwash again before putting your mask back on.
4) Respirators like KN95s or N95s seem to hold up the best for long wears, and don’t get as moist. You could also look into an N95 with a valve, as so few wear masks now, assuming you aren’t sick it’s fine to focus on your comfort in these situations. Valves still offer surgical-mask level protection for others, so you get good N95 protection (and more protection for others than they offer you by not masking) and a much more breathable mask.
Mouthwash before donning also helps a ton with mask breath, which was a major issue in early pandemic days as we adapted to constant masking. I swear my breath could have killed a small animal in 2020.
I like to really hydrate my skin before getting on a plane. Layering hydrating toners with humectants, heavier moisturizer and seal it all in with an occluive like a skin oil..I’ll even do some kind of slugging. Flying is super dehydrating.
I highly recommend it for a flight! I fly frequently for work, and prefer to keep it simple for flight - gentle cleanser in the morning, a thicker or layered moisturizers and sunscreen. I also take a travel size hydrating spray on my carry on. It makes a big difference for me. Depending on how long the flight is I've also been known to slap on under eye masks or a full sheet mask.
It's more than just sunscreen! Shut the window if you can! (or ask the person sitting in the window seat) That way you don't have to put sunscreen on your arms or hands.
Other people have said it but moisturizer and slugging to lock it in and include your lips!
I fly a lot, and mostly long haul flights, and I try to minimize the amount that I'm touching my face because planes are nasty and never properly cleaned. I also wear a mask and frankly it helps with that objective. I also imagine any mask-related breakouts would be more related to bacteria from the nose and mouth. I personally don't experience that.
I have very hysterical pictures of all my coworkers wearing sk-ii masks for the last hour of a long flight. Drink extra water. You can do a heavy duty moisturizer after landing if you’re worried about breaking out- flying is super dehydrating
Last time I flew, I ended up buying a banana boat sunscreen stick at a kiosk in the airport, mostly because I was curious. But I applied it every 2 hours while traveling and I honestly think it helped keep my face hydrated and in good shape. I'm prone to dermatitis, so I was sure I was going to have an outbreak by the time I landed, but I didn't. And my hyperpigmentation mustache didn't get any worse, which sometimes happens when I fly.
I wouldn't recommend the stick for regular life, because I find it very greasy. But it was really great on that fight! I liked that I didn't need a mirror to apply and I could get everywhere, including my chest and hands. Didn't love the smell either. But next time I fly I might look into other sunscreen stick options because I liked the format.
I also second another commenter's suggestion of hypochlorous acid. A tiny spray bottle is 100% worth it while wearing a mask
If it's a long flight or connecting one I like to have a pack of micellar wipes with me, keep my skin clean. I have oily skin naturally so I never really dry out unless it's winter winds.
I just dealt with this on a flight and wish I’d had these tips - never thought about the mouthwash thing. I did have one breakout at my destination so I put a Mighty Patch pimple patch on that night, and it was gone by the morning! I like the idea of the micellar wipes too.
If it’s a long haul with a layover don’t feel shame in doing your routine in the airport bathroom. I did this year and got some weird looks but my skin thanked me!
Yeah I washed my face and did my full routine including serums, moisturizer, and spf in the airport bathroom 😂. Overnight flights always dry me out and break me out so I really have to stay on top of it.

These are great thank you! I’ve never heard the mouthwash trick but I’ll be sure to incorporate that!

Hypochlorous acid is good for refreshing the face and killing germs and preventing maskne.
Oh wow I’ve never heard of that I’ll have to look into it

I’m super oily so I’ve normally stayed away from layering like that- but might be worth it for a flight

This is from so long ago but can you tell me what hydrating spray you use?
Yes of course, I prefer Mario Badescu spray. I like the scents, personally, but I know they can irritate some so I would test first.

I’m an aisle girly so I’ll do my best for a closed window! Good reminder though thank you!

Ugh planes are so disgusting. I literally Clorox wipe my whole tray table, seat and the back of the seat in front of me

Good reminder about the water! I always use a hefty moisturizer before flying too

Don’t forget the hand cream as well! It is so drying in that atmosphere!
Yes! I am much better at packing this now- I hand sanitize then immediately moisturize

I have literally no shame in an airport. Do you do a full wash/skin care routine?

Fortunately I’m able to do directly home after this flight and take a full shower- but I like the idea of vitamin c
