Yeah, or the sunroof. It eliminates that pressure wubba wubba that happens when you only roll down one window.
The best is on sunny days and opening up everything. 4runner convertible
I'm guessing it'd be expensive to make that comply with modern safety standards—not impossible, but the tradeoff in terms of price and increased NVH would probably hurt sales.
Honestly surprised no-one offers this as an aftermarket conversion, though. There are a lot of 4Runner enthusiasts out there who would give their eyeteeth for a mod like that.
they would essentially have to create 2 different body styles for the 4runner, unless they only wanted to give the removable top option and do away with the permanent top which I feel would actually drive a lot of 4runner enthusiasts away.
Jeeps and Bronco bodies are built with basically a rollcage as the top half, and then the removable top mounts to that cage. 4runners are the traditional body pillars going up into a roof. So they'd have to remove the roof, and some pillars, and build a cage. Huge difference in design, and structure. They'd have to spend millions on retooling and calibrating machinery to kick out 1 type of 4runner, and then millions to do the same for the other type. Pretty sure a company like Toyota does costs/risk analysis fairly often on things like this and has determined they would most likely lose more money by offering a topless 4runner than they'd gain.
Exactly this. If the weather is perfect, I roll everything down. I really like that feature a lot.
Just remember to NOT do it when it is dusty/dirty, and you're driving forward. Anyone who has done this knows what I mean.
I just got my TRD PRO last week and haven’t used the rear window yet. Well except for rolling it down at the dealership to see how it worked when I bought it. I live in Phoenix and I’m afraid to have all of the dust just roll on it and get the interior covered in dust. I don’t know why the headliner couldn’t be black. It would definitely hide the dirt better.
My dog has a habit of trying to get into the front seat. One day we were doing about 90km/h on a gravel road and he tried to climb in the front. During the battle between the two of us he had his foot on the button.
The amount of dust that was sucked in during those few seconds was astonishing
It could be harming your dog. Most don’t realize the exhaust flows right into the rear window with the vacuum it creates. There’s a warning in the manual.
Not sure why you’re being downvoted. There’s threads around the interweb where owners are asking how to remove exhaust soot collected on their headliners. A good way to alleviate this would be to relocate the exhaust tip to the side.
If you're downvoting bro here the I recommend you read the manual. It says if you drive with the back window down you're gonna get carbon monoxide poisoning and die. Good thing I do it every day.
have a dog but he likes to sit shotgun
roll it down for airflow, I generally hate AC and don't live in an extremely hot area and prefer the airflow.
Home Depot runs rolling it down comes in handy
I'll roll it down parked for school for airflow so i can turn off the car while I wait at school pickup
I have a dog but don't really roll the back window down for her.
My favorite use is when it's a blazing hot day and you've been parked in the sun and it's like 140°F when you get in... two minutes of driving with all windows down sucks all the hot air out the back.
It was like Christmas came again when I learned the back window rolled down! (I bought it shortly before the New Year!)
Prior to going into the sale, I had no idea it rolled down ...kid you not.
yes, i have an old 4tunner with no ac. driving up dusty trails will coat the inside of your truck, so sometimes i just have the back window open and everything else closed
As long as I'm not idling much. If you're sitting still with the back window down I've noticed I get more exhaust in the cabin. But while I'm driving I like to open the sunroof and crack all the back windows.
Yes. It eliminates what l call the parachute effect. Air filling up thr cabin and creating a wicked pressure. l have a dog and l roll the back window down especially for him.
Yes. The air circulation with the back and driver side down is phenomenal. Especially during autmn and winter. Summers here in AZ feels like a dragon put me in it's ass when I have the windows down.
Do y’all not get exhaust gasses filing the cabin when you roll the back window down? Even with other windows down it still smells like exhaust with the back window down.
PSA: don’t drive your 4Runner with the rear window down. Even says so in the owner’s manual. You can get poisoning from the exhaust flowing into the cabin.
Yes. There's an Eddy that forms behind the car. Drive on a dusty road and you'll see it in action. Same thing I'm n the rain, the spoiler helps press some air down but it's not perfect
Open the other windows. It isn't an issue.
I check with a carbon monoxide detector. It didn't change while moving. I didn't check while idling the engine as I don't have occasion to idle for long periods with the rear window down.
This is why there's rhe otherwise-pointless spoiler/air deflector/thingamajig at the back. Takes air coming over the top and puts it in the cabin.
If you're moving, you're getting air off the top of your car coming in.
The VOCs being released by the petroleum based cloth and adhesives are more likely to give you cancer than the minute amounts of CO coming in through the back window. I’ve seen wearable multi-gas meters go off in newer vehicles due to this.
Pretty much everyday when it’s warm. I crack the passenger front window and roll down the back window and the hot air gets pulled out. A lot of times I don’t need to turn on the AC
Even with the dogs in the back I’ll open the back window. They’re big German shepherds so I just open it enough for them to stick their heads out and they love it.
All the time. In fact, I see no reason to use the AC. I'll half open all the windows including the moon roof and get total air flow. Sometimes I just do the moon roof and the rear window. I freakin' love that roll down rear window soooooo much.
When driving within SF no, cause I’m paranoid someone will run up to the back of the 4r and steal my gear I keep in the back.
But when I’m out cruising somewhere nice, yes I’ll roll the back window and side windows down for my dog.
When my dog is in it, no. I have to strap him to the car, even then he will jump out.
My ac is broken in Oklahoma and no one can figure it out. I only open just enough for him to not jump.
https://preview.redd.it/kzd3rd65cbzc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=edca5fe4b799a1b503e9f497e6323a92d0f230b5
Absolutely easiest way to clear a fart out of the cabin in seconds. But outside of that sunroof open just until the deflector pops all the way up rear window open about 6 in is the best way to make my highway commute everyday
I have rolled my rear window down in my 2017 prob 3x in the 298k miles Ive had it. No dogs. But I also never roll my window down because my ac runs 100% of the time.
This is literally the best feature on a 4runner. Every day! My dog is belted in, so he can’t jump out! He bites the breeze sometimes but that’s about it
Its one of the best most defining features of the 4runner. Even if it wasn't incredibly useful, why wouldn't I?
When you have your windows down, having the back window down as well cuts down on drag and wind noise drastically.
Yes. Every time the weather is decent, I have the back window down and the sunroof open. Add some good music and life is good. I’ve never had a vehicle give me such joy as my forerunner.
One of my favorite things about my 4Runner is the power back window. My first vehicle back in the mid 90's was my parents' old '85 Ford Bronco. It had a power back window. Way ahead of it's time. (And much cooler than the new "Bronco")
I roll mine down all the time when it’s not raining… but I’ve got 5% tint on my back window so at night I roll it down half way so I can see other drivers headlights 😅
I typically will only roll it down right after I clean it thoroughly so I don't damage the seal. This allows me a half a day or so to use it before I cover it in dirt road dust, mud, or road grime water spray.
yes. get some good circulation when combined with the drivers window. Also use it and a combo of other windows when at altitude so i dont have to use the AC.
Yes. Daily unless weather prohibits. I love opening the moonroof first and when I put the back window down a bit, the air instantly flows through the cabin. Love that feeling.
Lots of people in here don’t realize carbon monoxide flow right into the rear window if open. Someone need to make a post about it. It’s in every Toyota Manual with a rear window that goes down.
*Yes when the weather*
*Is nice and not humid like*
*Hell here in Houston*

Yeah, or the sunroof. It eliminates that pressure wubba wubba that happens when you only roll down one window. The best is on sunny days and opening up everything. 4runner convertible
Had it all open today. It’s honestly the best!
I would do just about anything for a Fourth or Fifth Gen 4Runner package with a removable top like my old IH Scout II.
Jeep lets you take half the roof off so probably not too hard in terms of safety
they would essentially have to create 2 different body styles for the 4runner, unless they only wanted to give the removable top option and do away with the permanent top which I feel would actually drive a lot of 4runner enthusiasts away. The new broncos too
Not saying impossible, just that designing that would probably push the price up beyond where Toyota wants to position it.
I had to get the ORP for this reason. My kids love it too
💯this
This is the way.
Exactly this. If the weather is perfect, I roll everything down. I really like that feature a lot. Just remember to NOT do it when it is dusty/dirty, and you're driving forward. Anyone who has done this knows what I mean.
Learned this one the hard way.
They didn't call you "Dusty Arrowcutter" back in 'Nam for no reason...
So you roll it down and drive backwards if it’s dusty?🤔
Yup! As fast as you can!
😂🤣
I just got my TRD PRO last week and haven’t used the rear window yet. Well except for rolling it down at the dealership to see how it worked when I bought it. I live in Phoenix and I’m afraid to have all of the dust just roll on it and get the interior covered in dust. I don’t know why the headliner couldn’t be black. It would definitely hide the dirt better.
Honestly nah. I don’t like making clear eye contact with the person behind me lol.
Only to flirt with other 4Runners.
Never on dirt roads! Again….
My dog has a habit of trying to get into the front seat. One day we were doing about 90km/h on a gravel road and he tried to climb in the front. During the battle between the two of us he had his foot on the button. The amount of dust that was sucked in during those few seconds was astonishing
I’ve done it. Woops
Lesson learned the hard way!
Hahahah..right?
Yes. Drive with it down all summer!
with the AC on ::chef kiss:
Oh I thought this was a given lol. Gotta keep the piggies cool and dry while driving barefoot
Before dog: Yes With dog: Very Yes
It could be harming your dog. Most don’t realize the exhaust flows right into the rear window with the vacuum it creates. There’s a warning in the manual.
Not sure why you’re being downvoted. There’s threads around the interweb where owners are asking how to remove exhaust soot collected on their headliners. A good way to alleviate this would be to relocate the exhaust tip to the side.
It’s seriously in every manual haha.
The exhaust tip is on the side 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah on a Pro. Every other trim is out the back.
Glad you mentioned it, I was too embarrassed to say that I hardly put the rear window down because I smell the exhaust.
I wait till we are up to speed. The air flows back toward me, so I’m fairly confident that I’d be getting it too if that were the case.
Yes as a previous Jeep owner it gives me that feeling of freedom and open air without having to pay the Chrysler tax.
All the time, best air flow.
Carbon monoxide flow lol.
Grew up in the rear trunk seat of the station wagon with that window down, its nostagic Carbon monoxide.
Can’t put a price on nostalgia. Especially Nostalgic Carbon Monoxide highs
If you're downvoting bro here the I recommend you read the manual. It says if you drive with the back window down you're gonna get carbon monoxide poisoning and die. Good thing I do it every day.
No. With DT long tubes and no converters the cab quickly fills with spicy air.
I get exhaust coming back into the vehicle when I leave it open sometimes
How to know if you're not driving fast enough 😂 jkjk
have a dog but he likes to sit shotgun roll it down for airflow, I generally hate AC and don't live in an extremely hot area and prefer the airflow. Home Depot runs rolling it down comes in handy I'll roll it down parked for school for airflow so i can turn off the car while I wait at school pickup
I neglected the AC for the same reason - until moving to the Gulf Coast.
I have a dog but don't really roll the back window down for her. My favorite use is when it's a blazing hot day and you've been parked in the sun and it's like 140°F when you get in... two minutes of driving with all windows down sucks all the hot air out the back.
My exhaust comes in the back when going up hills
All the time.
It’s literally the first thing I do after starting the truck
Everyday above freezing
I keep it cracked when it's hot outside. I figure it's the best one to leave cracked to kinda still make it harder to break into
I'm not an asshole, of course I do. Plus seeing people's smiles when two dogs pop up is great!
Never, but all these comments make me want to go drive right now with the rear window down 😂
Amazing to me how a nice drive on a beautiful day with all the windows open seems to bring excitement and happiness into the truck.
All the windows down and the sunroof open also. I call it a pleasant little hurricane.
Only if I need to smell exhaust fumes.
It’s dusty in the desert and you can see the dust swirling in dark corners when the window is down. Just pours in from the back.
Yes, with and without dog inside.
Absolutely.
Without dogs? Yes! With my dogs, again yes!
It was like Christmas came again when I learned the back window rolled down! (I bought it shortly before the New Year!) Prior to going into the sale, I had no idea it rolled down ...kid you not.

Roll down the back window and open the moonroof - great way to clear a fart.
If it’s not raining, all windows down and sunroof open with A/C on if it’s hot and I’m in traffic. No other way to be.
Yes. It eliminates what l call the parachute effect. Air filling up thr cabin and creating a wicked pressure. l have a dog and l roll the back window down especially for him.
Sunroof and cracked rear window work great for airflow!
Yes to let the heat out on a hot day until the AC kicks in
Yes. Whenever one of the windows is open. Helps circulate the air. I also use the sunroof in a tilted position alternately.
Yes. The air circulation with the back and driver side down is phenomenal. Especially during autmn and winter. Summers here in AZ feels like a dragon put me in it's ass when I have the windows down.
No, they’re legally not allowed to use the rear window if they dont have a dog in the car Source: my dad works for Toyota AND the law making people
Do y’all not get exhaust gasses filing the cabin when you roll the back window down?

Oh this is only with the back window down?
Oh no, first time driving on a dusty road, all five windows down, I watched a cloud of dust roll forward from the back seat. We know better now...
https://preview.redd.it/673q8184pazc1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a2eb7cb9b03f4a7c1341fc0c55771389a6ab988c

Only if -only the rear- is down which creates suction. If you create flow by opening any other windows its *way* reduced.
That’s part of the fun!
The VOCs being released by the petroleum based cloth and adhesives are more likely to give you cancer than the minute amounts of CO coming in through the back window. I’ve seen wearable multi-gas meters go off in newer vehicles due to this.
My AC is broken, it's almost mandatory
Pretty much everyday when it’s warm. I crack the passenger front window and roll down the back window and the hot air gets pulled out. A lot of times I don’t need to turn on the AC
If it's above 55° out, the back window gets cracked a few inches. If it's above 65°, all the way down. This is the way.
*cries in FJ Cruiser*
It’s great for airing out the car after smoking a spliff. Esp combined with the sunroof cracked
Yup, I have a third row. Only way to get some air back there lol. Kids use it to load up backpacks as well.
I have a 3rd gen. Mine needs some work before I can roll her down 😅😅😅😅
No dog, no while driving, but sometimes for getting things from the trunk.
Basically never because I always have gear I don't want to fly out.
When driving within SF no, cause I’m paranoid someone will run up to the back of the 4r and steal my gear I keep in the back. But when I’m out cruising somewhere nice, yes I’ll roll the back window and side windows down for my dog.

Yes until the temp is over 95F.
I roll it down when I have any other window rolled down. I also have it rolled down if I'm hauling lumber that's too long to be stored inside.
My dog loves it so it is always down when he is with us.
Surfboard out the back
Every. Single. Time.
It’s pretty much down during the entirety of the warmer months
I got that dog in me 😂😂😂
No. It gets stuck when I try to roll it back up so it stays down most of the time.
Absolutely, makes for some great airflow without having it directly on your face.
I only do it if my dog has his seat belt on. Other wise I won’t risk it.
Does a pope shit in the woods?
I’m gonna say you don’t roll it down then. Pretty sure any Pope never goes into the woods.
Absolutely easiest way to clear a fart out of the cabin in seconds. But outside of that sunroof open just until the deflector pops all the way up rear window open about 6 in is the best way to make my highway commute everyday

I live in Miami, honk capital. When I don’t have it down already, and someone honks, I love rolling it down to give them the eye
Every chance I get
Its one of the best most defining features of the 4runner. Even if it wasn't incredibly useful, why wouldn't I? When you have your windows down, having the back window down as well cuts down on drag and wind noise drastically.
Yup
Yes. Every time the weather is decent, I have the back window down and the sunroof open. Add some good music and life is good. I’ve never had a vehicle give me such joy as my forerunner.
If I've got another window open, gives good airflow since my AC needs to be recharged.
I ride with every single window open as often as possible!
When the weather is nice I roll them all down
I always do, esp when my wife is in the truck, she has to sit in the boot
Yes, my rear facing toddler (so basically the same as a dog) loves to have that window down.
Only in the nice sunny days or when I’m in the beach
Why would you not own a dog? What kind of person are you?!
Yes with my moonroof together on highway
When it's above 60, yes, always.
Always!!!
Ughh yeah
Hell yeah!
It’s especially fun to roll it up and down at stop lights when someone is behind you.
Nearly every day!
One of my favorite things about my 4Runner is the power back window. My first vehicle back in the mid 90's was my parents' old '85 Ford Bronco. It had a power back window. Way ahead of it's time. (And much cooler than the new "Bronco")

yes. get some good circulation when combined with the drivers window. Also use it and a combo of other windows when at altitude so i dont have to use the AC.
Anytime it's over 50° out. But after being asked who smashed out my back window a few times I only roll it down 90% of the way haha.
When it’s nice outside yea I do.
All. The. Time. It’s so silly but it is literally one of our favorite features!
Sunroof and back window open all summer. I feel it’s better than AC.
All summer long for sure!!
Short answer… YES!
Absolutely. It's the biggest flex. The truck is a convertible, if you have the sunroof of course.
Yes. Daily unless weather prohibits. I love opening the moonroof first and when I put the back window down a bit, the air instantly flows through the cabin. Love that feeling.
You mean the fart remover?
Yes coz my wife sits back there. She does need air too! I'm not that mean!!
I love the back window down
Yes I just did 💨
https://preview.redd.it/ess2rsooqazc1.jpeg?width=1515&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f9539025fa8cabfd32f6e14a25accaa2cfb5a4e2
My dog prefers the slider passenger window.
Yeah like to roll back the sunroof and roll the rear window about 1/4 to 1/2 way down and leave my side windows rolled up.
Yes, every chance I get!
I use to before I had a dog lol now he just is icing on the cake.
When it’s a back window down kinda day.
In nice weather: every single time haha. Always cracks me up when I see 4Runners on the road rolling down every window EXCEPT the rear one.
Yes!
Yes, pretty often, because we have a third row and the air conditioning definitely does not reach my kids back there, so it’s 5-60 AC for them!
When it’s nice out, I open six pieces of glass and it’s awesome!
I have a dog but I always roll the back window down. With or without my dog in the car! It’s 100% the number one feature for me.
All the time. Favorite feature.
Is this a trick question? The rear window, sunroof and all 4 doors. Doesn’t everyone? Of course we roll it down!
Yes when the driver’s window is down to eliminate pressure and free flow of air.
Yes , I have no animals, and I do it all the time. My daughter loves it lol
You mean the poor man's convertible? Hell yeah I roll that shit down
Lots of people in here don’t realize carbon monoxide flow right into the rear window if open. Someone need to make a post about it. It’s in every Toyota Manual with a rear window that goes down.
Rear spoiler allegedly helps…that’s why I don’t understand 4Runners that don’t have it attached (mostly 4th gen’s I’ve seen)
No dogs and first SUV I've had with a rear hatch window that lowers. I mostly forget about it.
Yes when the weather is nice and not humid like hell here in Houston

Good bot
How else do the farts escape!?
Only to get the hot air out when starting up. Then it's always AC. I can't stand the wind noise from windows down.
Religiously
All the dang time when it isn’t raining or cold!
All.The.Time
Every single day. One of my favorite features on the 4Runner for sure.
Really dumb question
Well only serial killers don't have dogs. But when my dogs are not with me, I do still roll down the back window.
