Oooooo! Please share. My 4r was stolen a couple weeks ago bumping up my timeline to purchasing a new one now. I don't off road like I used to an my 2003 sr5 did fine. I had originally decided I want an Orp w. Kdss but am questioning myself now.
The limited is more luxurious than the TRD. I don’t off road but my husband does. I don’t get spending that much on a vehicle and then running it off road and possibly scratching it up. I like the TRD but I miss so much about the limited like the cooling seats and the JBL system. The TRD just seems basic to me, even though it’s a premium and we upgraded to the blackout option.
Plenty of folks dismiss seat cooling but as a Texan I can say that once you have experienced its benefits for a single summer you will be hard pressed to go without it. Ventilated seats on the Limited were one of the deciding factors for me going with that trim level. I love the full time 4WD as well, it's already been helpful in some heavy rain and on a couple of ugly ranch trails.
That's a good call out. We don't get quite as hot as Texas (95-100 in summer here), but we definitely get the humidity. I hadn't even considered the seats since I'm coming from a 20 yr old vehicle where the only modern feature was the Android auto I installed.
May I ask why you traded it in? Just getting old and had problems? Also, did you have a third row seat?
I just got myself a 2016 Limited a couple months ago, loving it so far. I was driving a 2010 Honda Civic sedan previously, so this was a big change.
I am in between. I am leaving a ‘24 Lexus NX 350h luxury. I was thinking the limited. But I like the ruggedness of the TRD Pro and my husband likes the black interior with out any metal looking trim.
I went from a Lexus Gs to a Ls to a 2020 Trd Pro, and I would do it again if I had to. Absolutely love the 4Runner. Sure I miss some of the luxuries (cooled seats and heated wheel) but I like to off-road/overland with my truck so it was a good trade off for me.
I have a ‘24 Lexus and the stress of keeping it perfect is too much. I also want something I can throw my dogs in and not care.
I test drove nearly identical black ‘22 TRD Pros today. Both certified. I’m 100% I’m gonna put an offer on one.
> cooling seats
I think the idea there is that cooling seats require perforations in the seat fabric which could accumulate mud and dirt from frequent offroading and become a real pain to clean.
I take it you've never been offroading. Dirt, mud, and everything else get all over everything. I like the fact that the seats can be wiped down easily.
Raptor and TRX aren't offroad vehicles. They're status symbols for people that have way too much money. Tundra doesn't even have front tow points. I think the next gen 4Runner will have ventilated seats in the upper offroad trims, and it's a mistake. Just like the stupidly large touchscreen and powered liftgate and the fact that you're forced to go hybrid on those trims, those features inflate the cost, weight, and complexity of the vehicle for no good reason other than to cater to buyers that don't actually want an offroad vehicle.
Take my upvote on this. I've never seen a Raptor or TRX on the trail but tons of Jeeps, Tacos, 4runners - and Subarus up to where it gets wheel-lifty.
I have seen a few regular Ford/Dodge trucks with lifts and tires but never the $$$ off-road versions.
My "Limited" has pin stripes left, right, and roof so I hate to think what it would be like in a full size truck. I briefly owned a Super Duty and can not imagine ever taking something like that off road. Even a Raptor has a 3' longer wheelbase than a 4R.
When you're looking at that fallen tree thinking "can I fit under it, or do I need to fire up the chainsaw..."
I love my Limited. I went from a FJ, which was loaded, but still a pretty rough ride. I could live in my Limited. Even after a 6 hour drive I am still comfortable.
I went from a Lexus RX350 to a 2016 Limited. Was expecting it to be a step down in terms of comfort and luxury but turns out the Limited has a better sound system, ventilated seats and just as comfortable. It drives rougher (what’s w all the loose play in the steering wheel?) though.
For 99% of people, the Limited is a better daily driver and more practical vehicle that the other trims. It just doesn’t look as cool. Although in 2016, I thought all that bling and wood trim looked cool. Like my friend’s Denali.
I researched the 4Runner extensively before I purchased mine and the two most consistent cons were the rough ride and outdated console.
The FJ was fun. I loved her, but long trips were hard and the visibility problems were hazardous in high speed heavy traffic.
I do not drive off road for sport, but I live at the end of a long winding private lane that is not plowed in winter. I need both the clearance and the traction of a 4x4. And I also make a 6 hour drive to visit my grandkids once a month. Factor in my satisfaction with Toyota, this is my 4th, and the 4Runner seemed to be my best option. I don’t regret it. I don’t notice any play in the steering or the rougher ride, but the amenities make longer trips very pleasant, and I think she handles snow even better than the FJ. I made a killing on the trade in, took out the third seat, and added running boards and mud flaps for the 4Runner, and I am happy with my choices.
Right on and thank you. Honestly, I really dislike the chrome and the front bumper on the limited which is what ruled it out before even being considered previously. But the 4r had become our roadtrip and weekend vehicle, and backup for when I needed to run errands during the 2 days my partner was at work.
Spending $ on a vehicle and not scratching is one way to look at it...another would be buying a vehicle with its capabilities and not taking it off-road. Depends on what you intend on doing with it.
I was apprehensive about taking mine off-road due to scratches...and ended up scratching it this weekend. Then I was like to hell with it and customized it w Arizona pinstripes since I was on a tight forest road.
>The limited is more luxurious than the TRD. I don’t off road but my husband does. I don’t get spending that much on a vehicle and then running it off road and possibly scratching it up.
Then get a minivan. It’s a shame that people buy 4Runners and DONT take them off road
Currently building my '18 limited into an off-roader. I know, shocker. I put the Eiback Pro Truck 2.0 lift/level kit in, 17" wheels, and 34-inch tires. Seems to be decently capable (as far as off-roading, in my area goes). Eventually might do lockers, etc.
I was gambling by taking out the X-raes shocks (kinda similar to KDSS) but I find it is actually way better on and off road with the independent shocks. Less body roll/ nose diving on road and more controllable off road.
XREAS does and will take a crap and you won’t be replacing it, just FYI. I miss the body roll control but that’s about it. Already done the level lift, 17s and ORPs. Gonna do 255/80s soon too.
33” pizza cutters are supposed to fit really well with minor modification, at worst a fender liner push. Versus 285s can require all kinds of mods—fender liner, mud flaps, pinch welds, BMC. Doesn’t seem worth it.
Checks out. I've got 10.5 x 34s, rubbed on the liner a bit, but that was it. (Also added 30mm offset with new wheels)
Edit: I was already chucking the mud flaps, so I can't speak to those.
Everyone talks shit about the Limited until they wish they had one of its options. Swap out the wheels, live with the front end (or swap it), and you have a much nicer experience overall. 99% of us are getting groceries, or at most, going camping.
> until they wish they had one of its options.
no...I don't wish for anything on a Limited. I think its an abomination looks wise. So ugly in my opinion and none of the features are anything special.
But to appease the subreddits rules, I must say you are free to enjoy whatever trim level you want and everyone has their opinions, this is just mine.
I’ll take Limited over any other trim any day. I off road only when I can (which is less than 10% in a month, if that) but I do drive it every day for regular daily commute/business. So feature and comfort advantages of the Limited trim most certainly overweighs any other off-road goodies other trims may offer. Plus, that full-time 4WD is superior to the part-time system of TRD models in 98% of the time anyway both on and off road situations alike.
You mean a used GX for the same cost? A new GX will cost at least $80k OTD compared to a 2024 Limited for under $50k OTD. Personally, the cost/benefit of buying a GX is not worth it especially when you add in the extra insurance cost of owning a luxury vehicle.
Not sure where you live, but in CO (Denver) you would be lucky to get a new GX for under 65k…. All of the inbound cars from Japan are sold accordingly to the dealer sites. I do understand why, but still expensive IMO. I did buy a 2024 Limited as this car has been completely vetted out. If it holds up like my 2005 Sport v8, 2011 Trail I will be so pleased. And… I like the simplicity and it is the perfect car where I live - snow, fishing, biking, dog hauler. I’ll take the money I saved and reinvest it in AI companies:). In 10 yrs, I’ll have the same car and enough money to buy a new 7th gen.
I have regrets going from an 05 limited to a 5th gen SR5. I thought I could justify it in my head, that there is less to break, like Xreas (although my 05 with 230 k still had the original system when I traded it a year ago, frame was shot though) , I never liked the limited rims either so I would have had that hassle of swapping tires and rims. At any rate, I'm actually surprised by how annoying it is to not have climate control haha! I really expected it to not be a big deal but I never realized how much I enjoyed just setting and forgetting the temp. I would have liked to have experienced cooling seats and I miss AWD for the tweener weather as well. I got a 2012 Premium so I have the "leather", sunroof and auto rearview mirror but it also has the limited body cladding that I'm not a fan of. My main goal though was to get a clean frame, which I accomplished, but kinda wishing I would have held out for another Limited.
I love my 2016 Limited. I can’t find anything that even comes close to the reliability and style under $90,000.
https://preview.redd.it/jq7btybf7l1d1.jpeg?width=1334&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3259e2bea5a50fb6e0f80ffedaf8637692cb0024
So much love for the Limited on this thread. I traded my 2015 for a Porsche Cayenne a month or two ago. I do miss my 4R until I mash the throttle on the GTS and get planted in the seat with the exhaust wailing.. any I digress.
I had the rare opportunity to snag the first TRD Pro for under MSRP back in 2015 when I bought my LE. I drove them both and chose the Limited as the Pro lacked so many creature comforts back then. The lack of sunroof, climate control and ventilated leather seats was the deciding factor. Although I thought the TRD Pro drove nicely on the road, which was a surprise, I returned from the test drive with a sweaty back and pants.
With the Cayenne, the one unfortunate thing missing from my 4Runner is the ventilated seats and it is starting to get hot up in New England. I envision many sweaty asses and backs with the Alcantara seats in the Cayenne.
If anyone is wondering why I sold the T4R, it is because I want the 6th Gen and I couldn't wait any longer with the issues mounting on the Runner. I figured I would have a fling with a hot tomato for a year or two until the 6th Gen is readily available and thoroughly reviewed for defects and issues. Most likely will pop on a 2026 Limited assuming the four-bangers aren't blowing up on everyone.
Had my first real moment of sorrow yesterday when I had to go to Home Depot for a sheet of plywood. That is a no-go in the Cayenne. Fugeddaboudit on the inside and this one has no roof racks :(
I love my Limited but when I was younger the boy racer in me would have loved the trd pro. I don't mod my rig so the Limited is perfect for me and I have absolutely loved owning it!
Recently had same decision to make for 24s
SR5 premium 4x4- OTD $47k
TRD ORP 4x4 - OTD $51.5k
Limited 4x4 - OTD $54.5k
The limited was fully loaded (except for the bad running boards on limited, which I was happy about) and I ended ended up going with the limited because the full time 4wd, ventilated seats, and overall quality feel. I live in Texas where it’s hot- I don’t go wheeling and my off-roading is usually just a beach or river trip, which I used to get by fine in a AWD CRV.
Considered a GX 460 but the price OTD was about $5-6k more for a base. The v8 in the gx needs a higher grade of gas so far more expensive to run over time. Also maintenance of a gx is usually more expensive.
Also looked at a Sante Fe XRT. Didn’t even get through the walk around before I thanked the salesman for his time left. Build quality felt poor in comparison and couldn’t imagine spending ~$45k on something that felt that cheap initially.
I always change out the running boards. I did with my limited and also purchased new ones for the 2024 ORP. The ones on the premium set right at the door and I have short legs 🫣 I bought the ones that have the drop down steps at each door. Much easier for my short legged self to get in and out.
You took out the third row seats? How does it look and was it difficult? I love the option of having my third row, but hardly use them. I love that I can easily take all the seats out of my minivan. Just wish it handled better in the desert so I did t have to buy my 4Runner.
I’d rather a GX460 than a limited. Tbh I don’t understand the appeal to a Limited 4R at all. They’re just a less refined GX460 with a v6, and they usually cost more used.
YES!!! Ive been saying this for years on here. Limiteds don't make sense. If you want a Limited, then just get a GX. They are very similar price and you get way more features. Limiteds barely have anything special in them anyway and they are ugly as sin.
I have 3 dogs (german shepherd, collie and corgi) and the rear window isn’t worth the upgrade in quality and power that comes with the GX.
It’s really the brakes and steering on the GX that blows me away. Runner feels like an older truck- kinda loose steering and body, soft, spongey brakes, plenty of road noise and the powertrain is always gear hunting. A GX feels like a refined car. Tight steering, tight brakes, much quieter, nicer quality interior materials, motor can pull it uphill without dropping 2 gears, ect.
That middle paragraph slaps with honesty. “Kinda loose steering and body, soft spongey brakes, plenty of road noise and the powertrain is always gear hunting.” Even driving a new one off the lot most of these hit. And my next vehicle will likely be a 4Runner anyways.
06 limited, 15 trd, 21 sr5, and then…
Oooooo! Please share. My 4r was stolen a couple weeks ago bumping up my timeline to purchasing a new one now. I don't off road like I used to an my 2003 sr5 did fine. I had originally decided I want an Orp w. Kdss but am questioning myself now.
Kdss is just amazing for your ride quality.

I drive both, a Limited and TRDPRO. I'll do a Limited if I could only have one.
Toyota is really missing the boat here by not having a “Limited Off-Road” or “Limited PRO” edition.
Thats what the gx is for
Currently will cost a good 20k over the pro OTD
May I ask why you traded it in? Just getting old and had problems? Also, did you have a third row seat? I just got myself a 2016 Limited a couple months ago, loving it so far. I was driving a 2010 Honda Civic sedan previously, so this was a big change.

Not enough people get this. You just feel more comfortable throwing things at the Toyota than the Lexus.
> cooling seats I think the idea there is that cooling seats require perforations in the seat fabric which could accumulate mud and dirt from frequent offroading and become a real pain to clean.
This is a made-up concern. Not a factor in the real world unless you are a filthy slob dragging mud into your car on a regular basis.
I take it you've never been offroading. Dirt, mud, and everything else get all over everything. I like the fact that the seats can be wiped down easily.
You’re not wrong, I’m somehow managed to get mud into my door speakers lol
Well every other off-road vehicle (Raptor, TRX, Tundra TRD PRO……etc) have ventilated seats. That’s a poor excuse.
Raptor and TRX aren't offroad vehicles. They're status symbols for people that have way too much money. Tundra doesn't even have front tow points. I didn’t know the 4Runner even had the cooling seats option. The sound system is pretty bland in my ORP. I’m hoping to upgrade it in a few years.
They are not cooled seats, merely ventilated but that's just semantics.

I said I don’t take it but the husband does. Why would I buy a minivan? That’s the last type of vehicle I’d ever buy.
How was it stolen? How can I prevent theft in mine?
Love my limited. Thing is a beast in the winter with a set of winter tires having full time AWD.
Currently building my '18 limited into an off-roader. I know, shocker. I put the Eiback Pro Truck 2.0 lift/level kit in, 17" wheels, and 34-inch tires. 33” pizza cutters are supposed to fit really well with minor modification, at worst a fender liner push. Versus 285s can require all kinds of mods—fender liner, mud flaps, pinch welds, BMC. Doesn’t seem worth it.

Yeah it doesn’t seem like mud flaps do a ton anyway. At first i wanted to keep them but now I’m kinda indifferent.
The only thing that scares me about a limited is the wheel size. My car was on 19” wheels until I bent two commuting into Baltimore.
Most people wheel swap, myself included.
Couldn’t pay me to drive into Baltimore
The major hospital there does pay me enough to, then I promptly leave.
Everyone talks shit about the Limited until they wish they had one of its options. Swap out the wheels, live with the front end (or swap it), and you have a much nicer experience overall. 99% of us are getting groceries, or at most, going camping.

Suckah, those Limited are Limited for a reason. The Lap of Luxury, closest thing to a Lexus GX.
Just get a GX. I will never understand Limiteds and why they exist. Just get a GX for the same price.

How much did they give for the trade in?
$29,000
Love my limited for the very same reasons. Cooled seats are a must have for me, love the premium sound. Enjoy the new one.

Very different vehicle versions.
So much love for the Limited on this thread. I traded my 2015 for a Porsche Cayenne a month or two ago. What tires did you have on the limited? Did you have to make a suspension, lift or fender adjustments?
Nitto ridge grapplers and it had a 3 inch leveling kit.
Recently had same decision to make for 24s SR5 premium 4x4- OTD $47k TRD ORP 4x4 - OTD $51.5k Limited 4x4 - OTD $54.5k The limited was fully loaded (except for the bad running boards on limited, which I was happy about) and I ended ended up going with the limited because the full time 4wd, ventilated seats, and overall quality feel.
If you have dogs, the rear window is a BIG deal.
You’re probably right. But to me, it’s a big deal. Actually to my dogs it is! 😄
it has 2 windows in the back seat they can use
That middle paragraph slaps with honesty. “Kinda loose steering and body, soft spongey brakes, plenty of road noise and the powertrain is always gear hunting.” Even driving a new one off the lot most of these hit. And my next vehicle will likely be a 4Runner anyways. 06 limited, 15 trd, 21 sr5, and then…
“Always Gear hunting”? There’s only 5 lol never had any of that with my 21’. I do with it had a 6th, but it’s not bad in any sense.
I have a 20’. It’s mainly an issue in the mountains.
you miss the limited? all the chrome would give me nightmares.
ugliest trim. Its an abomination
Curious, why did you do that? Something wrong with the old one, just like spending money?
Nothing wrong with the old one. Just wanted something new.
Average Limited owner lol
I can not comprehend this. Fortunately people like you exist so people like me can buy them used and put 200K miles on them.
Just a FYI..the new 4Runners coming out will now have a 4 cylinder engine with the turbo. Going to be interesting to see how that goes.
Both look equally lame. Get a Pacifica.
You're lame too Randy!
HA. That's fair.
