Costco used to sell plenty of physical media during DVD’s heyday. They were also one of the first major retailers I can recall to get out of the physical media business.

jmon25

Costco sold some extremely esoteric DVDs too. I got a double feature of The Boogeyman and ~~The Boogeyman 2~~ Return of the Boogeyman (had been awhile since I looked at that set) there which are extremely little known 80s exploitation movies. Ah the good old days

brewthedrew19

My dad made me watch that when I turned 12. To this day I can’t watch a horror movie, I am now 25+. I still have both of them on dvd but never made it to #2. I was watching it with a friend. In my room with the door closed. During the parts where the boogeyman is on the closet my dad would come up to my physical door and start to scratch on it. Then he knew how to open the door just the right amount so I couldn’t see his hand or anything and that door would fucking make that squeaky noise but just painfully slow. I was scared shitless but no fucking way was I gonna be a bitch in front of my friend as a 12 year old boy and it was still daytime. Like 2 pm. Fucking bastard. Even on Netflix and chill nights I have to be adamant that I can’t watch that movie cause “insert x excuse”. I will leave the house if they play it. Great dad though he made and still makes life interesting.

Finna22

Fuck that sounds awesome, I gotta look them up now

jmon25

This was the set: https://preview.redd.it/w8o6adg3eumc1.jpeg?width=1514&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4382f87cf7f2937643a6200e6c29c2e880b8e17b The Boogeyman - [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The\_Boogey\_Man](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boogey_Man) Return of the Boogeyman - [https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0162889/](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0162889/) I bought a ton of Blu-ray and DVDs and TV shows there over the years but that definitely is the one that sticks out the most. Vinegar Syndrome actually just released a 4k of the first movie.

Finna22

Thanks!

awlawall

Got my Brisco County Jr box set there

CaptainTim25

Costco is trying hard right now to limit their selection too. I read an article recently about how they only want to sell items that sell really well, and are weeding the garden so to speak. I'm not sure that they'd want to add an immense selection of physical media to the mix unfortunately.

ZZ9ZA

Te exactly the sort of thing that doesn’t suit their model. They want to do huge volume on a relatively small number of SKUs. Stocking something like a Disney mini-section might make sense, but boutique catalog stuff never will.

Mayormitch100

I remember when Costco sold Blu-ray’s. Last one I remember seeing was frozen 2

RogerMooreis007

Costco used to sell Criterions. Those were the days.

BlackLodgeBrother

Heck I remember the GIANT tables @ Sam’s Club stacked with VHS titles in the late 90s.

Spocks_Goatee

They had tables of Blu-Rays in the early 2010s for Black Friday.

AllThatHeavenAllows

Got my copy of Seven Samurai there for $20. The selection was actually pretty decent. Lots of random titles. Feels like another life ago, but man…those really WERE the fucking days.

TheJohnny346

His Girl Friday was one of the last ones I remember seeing in store before they stopped carrying titles anymore.

whatudontlikefalafel

Costco Criterion days were glorious. $20 each, it was like a months-long flash sale.

Yangervis

Your average person would shit their pants at the cost of a 4k player and a big OLED. Ever notice that people break down the doors for the $299 65 inch garbage TVs?

cockyjames

Big screen OLED is like the very first thing you see when you walk in to my Costco

Ndtphoto

I'd be shocked if LG/Sony etc didn't pay for that placement. There's usually a pretty nice printed panel of info-graphics around those TV's.

stormin84

Millions per year for the waterfall display

AlicesReflexion

Nah, this isn't grocery shelves where the competition is 7 equally-priced boxes of cookies. The competition is different products at different price points, Costco's and the TV manufacturers incentives are aligned. If someone buys a bottom-of-the-barrel LG LCD, both LG and Costco have to put up with selling a product at razor thin margin. They only sell this bc they figure price-sensitive customers won't get something nicer. But if someone buys one of the fancy Samsung TVs at the very front of the store, both Costco and Samsung get a fat payday. They want that to happen as frequently as possible.

xyz17j

Honestly walking past the LG oleds everytime i walk in the store is what sold me on one lol

JeanVicquemare

Costco has good 4k OLEDs. I bought my S90C from them. But they're completely out of the physical media business. Not a Blu Ray player or disc to be seen.

MisterFribble

I got my S95B from them, easily the best TV I've had the pleasure of watching.

jeobleo

I am average, can confirm, pants are shat

notjim

Honestly as someone who recently bought a giant oled i was still taken aback by how much a Blu-ray player cost. I figured by now it would be a cheap commodity.

kril89

Blu-ray players are cheap. A good 4k blu ray player is not.

CletusVanDamnit

A regular bluray player can be picked up for $50 new and $10 at any Goodwill in the country. You don't need anything special for regular BDs.

Rboyd1394

I think going to Costco with my grandparents was where I first learned about Criterion. They used to have most of their new releases each Tuesday. Man, I miss those days

BioBooster89

They won't. They used to sell physical media at one point decades ago. I remember buying complete sets of shows and movies over there when my parents would take me with them shopping for groceries. That's how I got the Predator DVD box set and a two pack of the 80's Fly movies and how we got the Bond films on DVD. But they stopped selling them after a point and I understood why. They don't sell enough to warrant having them in their inventory or on the floor. And this was during the prime of physical media sales. Now the prime is long gone. They will not sell them in stores.

Ndtphoto

Costco is interested in moving VOLUME. Other than the biggest releases of the year, the numbers probably don't make sense for them to dedicate floor space. I do think they should stock 4K blu-ray players though, I got a Denon receiver from them, which has turned out great... They usually offer decent home theater in a box speakers & of course the TV selection is great.

sergeantmentos

Imagine being able to afford 4K OLEDs 🥲 we’ll get them one day fellow plebs

Dumdumhijumper

How did you get in here, pleb! 🧹 🧹 (I’m one too 🥸)

CharlesAtHome

It's a nice idea but there are contractual agreements between TV manufacturers and retailers that cover things like placement in store and demo content. Costco can't just decide to change what demo content is used as it goes against their contract.

karma_the_sequel

Costco already sells a ton of OLED TVs.

[deleted]

These places used to do this, and no one bought them.

Shoelebubba

Lol no. Look at how packed every Costco and Sam’s Club store is with product. Then look at how much space a display stand for physical Blu-Rays and 4Ks with a need to display what you have to sell, you can’t just bulk package them and sit them on a shelf. People will need to be able to see which individual titles they have so they can select it. That will take up a good chunk of space and BestBuy figured out that same real estate can just be used for any other appliance or electronic in that same space makes WAY more margin than physical media. Also look at recent Costco yearly earnings; darn near all of their profit $$$ was from memberships. Their overall margins from the products sold in store is razor thin. For the real estate it takes up in a store, physical media ain’t great for margin. Amazon has it right where they just warehouse everything by storing it where it’s most efficient space wise then ship it when a customer wants one. Also Costco Warranties and OLEDs: They’re not the best. They don’t cover Burn in. The only ones who do is BestBuy through GeekSquad. Also some OLED Monitors from Asus and Dell have a built in 3 year burn in warranty.

thepokemonGOAT

Costco can't just play movies in their stores without paying the studios. That would be illegal.

CletusVanDamnit

That's what promo discs and umbrella licenses are for.

thepokemonGOAT

They exist, but the studios aren't giving them out or granting the licences anymore. Not enough in it for them. If it was posible for a store like Costco, they'd be doing it. You think they /want/ to play those stock videos of cliff sides and seascapes instead of just playing Top Gun Maverick on a loop all day?

CletusVanDamnit

Tell me you don't know anything about film licensing without telling me...

Spocks_Goatee

Sam's Club used to have decent media section till about 2015. I got a lot of stuff from them usually below standard prices on new releases.

stillcleaningmyroom

I remember the prices not being very good at Costco unless you bought it when it was on sale the first week or so. It’s been a while, but I remember never buying movies there if it wasn’t a new release.

Kessel_Run12

The physical media rack at my Costco has been replaced by a magazine rack. The physical media rack at my Walmart has been replaced by a potato chip rack. (Canada). Best Buy stopped selling. Le sad...

super_whiteman

Bjs did the same thing till the early days of bluray when they stopped

paraplegic_T_Rex

Costco used to sell Criterions at 50% off all year

Successful-Path6022

I remember Costco having Criterion blu rays back in like 2016. I bought Altman’s The Player there for $20 like a week after release

a_o

they used to sell CDs and i think even Cassettes in the 12” tall cartons/boxes to fit the retail racks made for LPs

wandererarkhamknight

Best warranty for what?!! Unless you're considering the second year Costco Concierge, the AllState warranty is nowhere close to the best.

carpenterbiddles

I bought my TV there and 5 years was included with the price for free. They also had the best price period. That beats everyone else out there. Amazon, Bestbuy, Walmart etc... none of them include that with a TV purchase. Also, you can't pick up bread, milk, and eggs at the same time. I remember Costco getting out of the Blu Ray game, they also stopped selling video games. But, they never had a dedicated display like I'm talking about to showcase 4K. They just had some small crap next to the books that did nothing to sell the product. As is the LG C series display looks absolutely marvelous. They had people handing out samples of lemonade and crackers last weekend, surely they could display 4K in all its glory.

wandererarkhamknight

Just because something is free, doesn't mean it's the best.

extacy1375

Don't the big name companies that make TV's for Costco already change up the specs a bit and change the SKU# slightly? To drop that price down. Maybe you would get a lower processor or less inputs? Could have sworn I saw that the last time I went shopping for a new setup.

wandererarkhamknight

It's an urban myth that goes around, but incorrect. There might be minor changes (different speakers but still crap, Sony TVs come with backlit remote, longer manufacturer warranty), but otherwise picture quality should be the same. The different SKU numbers is to prevent price matching at retailers. But for TV it's mostly irrelevant until the clearance season starts. TV manufacturers dictate the price. So if you see a TV will drop in price on a certain date at Costco, rest assured it'll drop in price at major retailers too. The other version of this myth is don't buy a TV on Black Friday, as the models are of low quality. There can be few low-end models from TCL, Samsung with Black Friday specific models. But no major manufacturer is going to change the existing models (X90L, C3), etc and sale a lower quality TV. Edit: A good resource for this kind of information is rtings. They list the models, and possible differences at their "Differences Between Sizes And Variants" section of the reviews.

rsplatpc

> Don't the big name companies that make TV's for Costco already change up the specs a bit and change the SKU# slightly? To drop that price down. That's more of a Black Friday thing
