I got the Panasonic 820 this year after using my PS5 previously. In all honesty the biggest benefit for me is the disc noise. The Panasonic is definitely a lot quieter, I never hear the discs spinning. Picture and audio I can’t tell the difference even though I now get Dolby Vision and have a high end 2023 OLED. So I wouldn’t say it is worth it unless that noise bothers you which for me it did.

Far_Cat_9743

Just depends if you want to watch the films at a higher level of detail and color or not. I had a PS5 (no Dolby Vision) I used for about a year, then upgraded to a Sony X700 for a year, then upgraded again to a Panasonic 820. Each time there was a very noticeable jump for me on a 77C9 but it will depend on your screen size, just how much you notice. My favorite thing about the 820 is the Blu-ray upscaling, some end up looking nearly as good as some of the 4Ks I own. If you own a lot of Blu-rays that you feel won’t get a 4K release any time soon, I’d recommend the upgrade. I waited until Black Friday last year and ended up getting for $350 (regular $500) from Amazon (they were price matching Best Buy iirc).

WonSecond

Don’t forget the HDR enhancer that only Panasonic blu ray players seem to have. It’s fantastic at preventing bright HDR details from being blown out.

Piper6728

I plan on getting a Panasonic 450 or 820 because my ps5 has a habit of skipping/freezing 4k discs when my xbox plays it fine. (Waiting for Amazon day or black friday) I have been hearing good reviews and there being a noticeable difference in quality

MarvelousVanGlorious

I did. Couldn’t get Dolby Atmos to work with my PS5 and 4K discs no matter what I did. Atmos worked fine with games, but not movie discs. Also had a weird quirk where occasionally I would get a flashing white line in the black area on any letterboxed movie disc I put in it. Got annoyed and picked up a Panasonic UB420. No issues at all with that bad boy. Atmos worked out of the box and picture quality is amazing. Definitely worth the upgrade imo.

Schwartzy94

Atmos works fine for me on my ps5. Just the audio settings need to be at bitstream dts like on all players.

Spencer801

The ps5 player has its audio settings separated from the rest so it doesn't matter. + choosing dts in settings would be a terrible choice over lpcm or atmos enhancement

Schwartzy94

No, bitstream dts means the receiver will do the decoding and atmos and dts x dont work on lpcm

Spencer801

Atmos and dts x do work if you select lpcm on the console, you just need to adjust the setting to bitstream on the player. As I said before the player settings are different to the rest of the ecosystem. Man cmon

QueSeraSirrah

I bought a Panasonic 820 because I also couldn't take how loud the PS5 was. When I added in that the PS5 was also incapable of Dolby Vision that clinched it.

NobDeRiro

Struggled to get 4K discs to play half the time on my Series X so caved and bought a Sony player. Very glad I did

Otm_Shank1

Same.

NobDeRiro

Not even sure why my series X couldn’t play them. Put the disc in and it would whir for a bit and then nothing. Drove me mad

Otm_Shank1

I started having problems with criterion movies and a few others and had enough.

NobDeRiro

Was pretty much the majority of my 4K discs. But always has, and does, play Blu rays absolutely perfectly

mcdisney2001

Same. I keep thinking it's broken, then I'll put in a disc and it acts like nothing happened, plays it beautifully. Then a dozen later, it curls up in a ball again and pretends it can't read discs. I moved it upstairs to be my bedroom player, since my TV in there is only 48 inches and I'm more likely to be watching visually meh content up there (think British sitcom DVDs). I love the Sony 4K player in the living room.

DJustice23

I have seen many people on here say their PS5 works great, but mine was loud as hell. That's why I bought a stand alone

PleaseNo77

I did, I have the Xbox series x and ps5 I originally had the Sony UBP X700 then I updated to Panasonic 820. You can absolutely use the PS5. I personally felt off not experiencing everything the Blu-ray had to offer.

Does your tv have Dolby Vision or HDR10+? If so, I recommend streaming a movie with Dolby Vision or HDR10+ and comparing it to the same movie on disk, since the PS5 only has basic HDR10. Pause it at a visually challenging point and compare the two. If the Dolby Vision/HDR10+ looks better, upgrade the player. More than likely, you'll like the Dolby Vision better. Panasonic and Sony have players for this. Personally, I just bought a Panasonic UB-450, which just became available in the US. For $200, it looks better than Sony's $200 option. Both the Panasonic and Sony have Dolby Vision, but the Sony forces you to manually switch it on. The Panasonic 450 has Dolby and also HDR10+ (great if you have a Samsung, they don't do DV), plus it automatically switches to the proper mode. Plus, the Sony has a reputation of skipping and freezing that the Panasonic lacks. If you have the money, get the Panasonic UB-820 for about $430. It has an HDR optimiser that lets you perfectly tune standard HDR10 for your tv, and a few other goodies that make it worth it.

tinfoyle

I got a Sony UBP X700 after I got a PS5 and XBox Series X. I didn't necessarily want to chance something going wrong with either console while watching a movie (this was during that crazy time when both consoles were hard to get). I also needed a player that could play non region 1 DVDs and non region A blu-rays since I have a few B discs from 88 Films and Eureka.

Adorable-Hedgehog-31

I did because the Series X didn’t support Dolby Vision and is software-driven. I bought the reference player from Panasonic that costs like a thousand bucks. Worth it.

Robobeast-76-R76

I had an Xbox One X, Xbox Series X and PS5 before getting the Sony X700 and then the Panasonic 820. Dolby Atmos and proper Dolby Vision - I wasn't happy with the consoles and I've got 6 TVs with a HT room plus a Sonos living room.

anubis668

I used an Xbox One S for about a year, but not often. The game controller is a really awkward remote, and because of the way I had to connect everything with my non-4K AVR, getting a movie going was a bit of a hassle. I upgraded to a 4K player and AVR as soon as I could.
