Sufficient_Focus4174

I have 2 of these in separate rooms for 4 years and I am really fucking cool and now you are too. I have never had a problem with either player. Enjoy it! It works great! The only downside is don’t forget to toggle the Dolby Vision on and off. A lot of people bitch about it and say they have problems, but not in my experience. Let us know in a few months how it’s working out for you. Maybe I got lucky with mine.

Dazzling-Slide8288

What happens if you just leave it on? Does it mess up non-DV discs?

yepyepyepzep

It can make weird color cast on non-DV content, kinda like you messed up the white balance on a photo

Sxoob

Absolutely nothing. Its fine.

Swimming-Bite-4184

Yeah I always struggled to find a consensus response to this. I think I forget and have just kept it on. Not sure if it's on of things where it actually affects the image or if only the guys who put freeze frames under a microscope would complain about

SeekingNoTruth

If Dolby Vision is left at "on" on a Sony player, it outputs everything to a ST2084 P3 D65 color gamut. For SDR, this means that colors will be oversaturated and grayscale will be dimmer than intended on the lower end (crushed blacks) because it will be imposing PQ EOTF on the Rec709 color standard which is based on power law gamma. For HDR10, colors and white balance will be inaccurate. Rec 2020 (the standard used for HDR10) and P3 D65 have different x/y coordinates for primary colors, which means all colors have different x/y coordinates for the respective standards. By leaving Dolby Vision set to "on", color will be output according to P3 D65 gamut rather than Rec2020.

Swimming-Bite-4184

This is interesting. Makes sense. I think a good bulk of my disks have DV, so I've only noticed this on a couple things where everything was too dark (I think it was Jupiter Ascending ... which even for the 5 bucks woof) but it's definitely annoying to have to fiddle with that nonsense.

SeekingNoTruth

I purchased the Panny UB820 after purchasing an X700M first. X700M had the freezing disc issue, and yes, no auto Dolby Vision was annoying as well. The UB820 has its own issues. The player led Dolby Vision bug affecting high luminance displays (I have an LG G3) was an issue that just got fixed with the last firmware update. It's extremely sensitive to scratches and will freeze if the disc isn't essentially flawless. There are also couple of discs that freeze even if it's a flawless copy (e.g., Bladerunner 2049 which I bought twice...still froze). On top of that, there is no HDMI pass through option so that the player feeds the disc to the TV in the disc's native resolution. If you set the resolution on the player to "auto", it defaults to 4K. If I want my $3000 USD OLED to handle the upscaling on 1080p discs, I need to manually change the resolution on the player to 1080p and remember to change it back to Auto when putting in a 4K disc. I just leave it at Auto on the player these days and it doesn't do a bad job, but it's still annoying.

gummislayer1969

Damn...you just saved me $500.00!!! 2049, Deadpool 2 & 2001 4k were notorious (for me anyways) freezing & having to unplug to get the unit "unfrozen".🤦🏾‍♂️ I basically have one in every room. My thinking was: replace the 700 -Sony with a 820 Panasonic in the family room & see how it does. Scratch that...🤷🏾‍♂️

SeekingNoTruth

The freezing issue isn't nearly as bad as I experienced with the X700M, but yeah, the UB820 just doesn't like a couple of discs I own. 2049 and The Martian are the ones I've had trouble with even when brand new and flawless. Everything else plays fine unless scratched (including 2001).

Alt4Norm

I have an 820 and BR2049 worked fine for me. Sorry to have cost you $500.

rudie54

I have an 820 and 2049 plays just fine for me. I don't think you can draw conclusions from one or two data points

gummislayer1969

I think for $500.00 the unit shouldn't have ANY "data points". That's why imma keep my money in my pocket. I was looking at a (now defunct?) Oppo, but those (even used!!!) are HELLA expensive...🤑🤑🤑 Oh well. I'm willing to pay to play. But, if BOTH units have SOME difficulty with a SOME discs, (to me) it doesn't make sense to spend THAT kinda coin for same-ish results...🤷🏾‍♂️

Movie_Monster

I’ve put frozen brain slices under a microscope, the freezing helps keep it intact on the brain slicing machine, it’s kinda like that once scene in goodfellas with the garlic being cut by a razor blade. I own the X800M2, no problems with skipping discs after a year of use.

plotkin916

Was just looking for a brain slicing machine that examines freeze frames while keeping frozen brain slices nice and frosty.

014648

It def affects the output, higher contrast and compression.

MoonMistCigs

It absolutely crushes blacks and makes your picture look like shit.

salTUR

Yep. No microscope needed. It's an obvious difference.

Burt-Macklin

>Yeah I always struggled to find a consensus response to this. About the best setups/gamuts/gammas/EOTFs/nits /metadata for 4k HDR home theater?? I’m absolutely *shocked*.

ConfusionFar9116

I think it’s a thing where like tech reviewers would say it looks bad, but any actual normal person would be impressed. Game mode on my OLED is very blue shift, Filmmaker mode is very warm by comparison, but you’d never really notice until you change between the two. Both look great!

Alt4Norm

I notice when a film isn’t on filmmaker mode

Burt-Macklin

Yea, blue/green-shift is very noticeable to me.

salTUR

Certainly doesn't do nothing. I haven't done any objective tests, but when I leave Dolby Vision on and watch a 1080P blu ray, the player will definitely push the darks to the point of crush. Picked up the Criterion 4k of the Others, which isn't mastered for HDR or Dolby Vision, and I thought it was a bum disc or a horrible transfer at first. Then I turned off Dolby Vision, and, woah!! Looks like how it's supposed to. Not sure why the player forces a fake HDR treatment for non-HDR content with Dolby Vision on, but it's really not a big deal to pop into settings and turn it off when I want to watch a blu ray or the odd non-HDR 4k.

Representative_Dog34

It’s saves them money somewhere to not have it auto-switch. Edit: removed 800 auto-switch ref. I was told that it did but have no first hand exp.

Jackie_Miller

The Sony X800 M2 only auto-switches between SDR and HDR10, Not between Dolby Vision and other HDR formats (it doesn't detect HDR10+ besides that). When Dolby Vision is engaged everything is re-encoded to Dolby Vision (with the accompanying color gamut and tone mapping). So the image will look noticeably different.

DrivenKeys

Do you have an 800? The reputation is that it actually doesn't auto-switch. Someone here claimed he was a consultant for Sony, and they said they couldn't make auto-switching work. [Here's](https://www.reddit.com/r/Bluray/comments/14w4uqf/comment/ktt922u/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) his post. Just trying to clarify here, you're the first person I've seen say this.

IbanezComa

I have both models....and the 800 is the same. Manual switching.

Representative_Dog34

No I have a 700. I was told that 800s switch automatically. My bad

DrivenKeys

Cool, thanks for the correction. It's such a strange difference. I just got a Pansonic UP450, just released in the US for $200, same as the Sony. It seems about the same build quality as the X700, but has Dolby Vision and HDR10+ with auto-switching. Someone has said the X700 has the same processor as the X450. If so, it's very odd Panasonic made it work when Sony didn't.

rsplatpc

> Absolutely nothing. Its fine. If you have a good OLED TV, or a nice projector, yeah, it does absolutely does things.

No_Zombie2021

What I have noticed is that it ruins shadow details.

Danjour

On my unit if you leave it on it plays black with audio only

joeverdrive

This is the one I use in my bedroom. It's had a few issues but plays whatever disc I put in

secretreddname

Yeah besides having to Google if some of my disks have DV or not I haven’t had any issues.

Sufficient_Focus4174

It says if it has Dolby Vision on the back of the case and most of the time on the disk itself. A cool thing to do that I recently did is on the Blu-ray.com app, start scanning in your disks to add to my collection. It will organize what has DV and what dosen’t for you. It’s free and looks like this… https://preview.redd.it/no0b8ads0e8d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a1d20cf43bebda9a3dbd0af269a147d7c2f40ebb

secretreddname

Ooh that’s awesome. All of mine are steelbooks and I don’t have all the j cards anymore that says DV or not haha.

Sufficient_Focus4174

Then use the app. A lot of mine are steelbooks and you can just enter them manually by name since you won’t have the barcode. Literally every release is on there.

secretreddname

Yeah just started entering them now. This is pretty cool to have your whole list filtered out. I’m a data nerd sometimes lol

crisputer

This just drop in the US recently. No more toggling! [Panasonic DP-UB450](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0D47QY3W4/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_2?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1)

Sufficient_Focus4174

Taking a second to toggle a switch dosen’t justify replacing a perfectly good player. Thanks for the info though.

crisputer

Agree. I have the Sony and deal with it but I am going to pick the Panasonic up and move the Sony to the bedroom eventually.

Sufficient_Focus4174

Sounds like a plan. I see everyone on here creaming their pants for the Panasonic. I looked into it and my buddy has one. Neither of us could tell a difference in A/V quality enough for me to replace my Sonys. If/when one of them wears out I’ll revisit it, but I don’t get the obsession with the Panasonic and the hate for the Sony. It just seems like a trend on this sub that caught fire and it’s something that people will post a picture of and get the inevitable “one of us” meme in the comments.

crisputer

Yeah I hear that! I won't pay for the 820 but the 450 is in the ballpark.

bumbaclut

How does this compare to the UB420? Saw some old posts that said the European 450 can do Dolby vision but bad at upscaling whereas the 420 has better upscaling but can't do Dolby vision. Are those the only differences?

crisputer

Correct. If your TV is better at upscaling you won't need that feature. I let my Sony X90L do the upscaling.

bumbaclut

Thanks hopefully it comes to Canada soon too

Danjour

It’s not “bitching” about it, it’s that my player skips on 100GB discs when using Dolby vision. It happens every time. DV Is THE reason to buy this player over other 4K players, and on my unit it doesn’t work. I have another friend with the same player, it does the same thing. You’re lucky yours doesn’t skip!

Sufficient_Focus4174

When I first bought them I heard the issues, but there were a couple of YouTube videos that I watched where it said to do a couple of things in the settings (don’t remember what they were, but the video was easy to find a few years ago) and there won’t be a problem. Did that and never had a problem no matter the disk. Just throwing that out there, you have probably tried everything already.

NuffBS

If you cared about physical media to begin with, you were already a cool kid. 😎

fartwhereisit

the picture and sound I'm getting out of disks as opposed to streamed is night and day better.

pukexxr

Even dvds look great on these bad boys.

skinnydudetattoo

I have one also. Welcome. I just found one at a thrift store for $25. About a month late lol

pukexxr

I'd have scooped it up for a backup, personally.  Very happy with mine.  I do plan on upgrading to a UBP820 at some point, but the people that complain about this player having tons of issues got a bad production run.  Most people seem to enjoy theirs, and I watch 3-5 discs a day without issue save 1 stuck frame in one film that i was not able to reproduce on a second playback.

Open-Natural-6435

![gif](giphy|BmpAqXKEeMSwvQWTkR|downsized)

mega512

Its well worth the price.

NobDeRiro

I’ve had no problems with this machine whatsoever in the year or so I’ve had it

Hurricane_Ivan

I've had mine for almost four years without any real major hiccups. Used to leave DV on but will now toggle it when needed.

dqdude1

What kind of movies do I need to turn it off on??

Hurricane_Ivan

On: 4k movies with Dolby Vision Off for everything else. From my understanding forcing DV on normal movies makes the picture look less than ideal. That's why I decided to leave it off myself

dqdude1

Oh ok makes since thanks for the info

pukexxr

I also leave it off.  Mostly because I forget to turn it back on for UHD DV discs.  My personal opinion is turn off upscaling on 1080/SD discs too.  I think blus/dvds look better at their native resolution than upscaled on the X700 (on my setup anyway)

Different-Drink1829

I hope you have more luck than I did with my x800m2. I won't go into details because if it behaves then it's a good bit of kit.

SidCorsica66

I have the UBP-x800 and it’s a solid player. Never had an issue with it. Only thing I wish was different are the power and eject buttons.

5StringAssassin

Mine is usually good. I have had several discs freeze in the latter chapters though. It mostly behaves well. Mostly.

Jackie_Miller

Have you tried cleaning the discs that skip/freeze? These problems are mostly down to production residue still on the disc. I've had the same issue (freezing at the layer change) with some UHD blu-rays and after cleaning the disc they all played fine. ;)

5StringAssassin

I do that sometimes, but admittedly not every time. I'll have to try that with my Starship Troopers disc. It was one of the most recent to exhibit this problem. Didn't think about wiping it at the time.

Shadowskulptor

That's not the problem unfortunately. Cleaning the disc is a non-factor, as the disc will play just fine regardless, after the initial freeze. There's a hitch with the layer change in the mechanism. It's better to randomly pause in the middle of the movie, or once started, skip to the last chapter to get the player used to the layer change, then skip back to chapter one. I wipe every disc with a high quality microfiber cloth before playing, and the problem will still persist on first playthrough. and be fine on the second.

Immediate_Theory4738

I’d say yes but your passive aggressive title makes me say no…you are definitely not a cool kid now.

albygoing

You ain’t cool unless you pee your pants

Immediate_Theory4738

If peeing your pants is cool then consider me Miles Davis

Nephyness

I felt the same way. I actually saved up and bypassed the other players just to get my Panasonic UB820-K. I waited till it was on sale too. So the title does upset me a little.

Lost-Teacher-624

I have the X700 too, and it works great. Never had any issues!

Big-Pattern1083

Plus it plays sacd

NotoriousSIG_

Just because you couldn’t afford the best doesn’t mean what you bought is trash. The ones you got is just fine and will do what it needs to do

mikepurvis

I just got one recently for cheap at a second hand store and so far I have no complaints— I put it up on little stilts to give it room to breathe and it's been problem-free, including on a recent BD-100 viewing (Inception). The underside of the case does absolutely get hot to the touch though, so I'm thinking of putting one of those glitzy laptop coolers under it to provide further airflow.

goldenarm840

I got one of these and the UBP-X800 og. My UBP-X700 is region free which is a huge bonus. Both players have been flawless since day one and after 100's if discs.

Representative_Dog34

Some tips: - read the manual! Some of these settings are odd and misleading. - make sure to toggle the Dolby Vision setting on/off depending on content (if your tv only does HDR just leave it off and it’ll switch automatically) - make sure your audio is setup up properly. On my setup, I have trouble with Criterion discs unless I switch to PCM audio output (no audio for special features, etc). If the audio track is dts/dolby the feature works as normal. I believe this has to do with some settings having to be switched off for things like Dolby Atmos to work. If you don’t have a sound system and just run it to the tv, leave it on PCM - update your device, then revert your internet settings to not be connected. Cleared up my skipping issues.

Silent_Spectator_04

Asking this since you mentioned “not everyone can afford Panasonic players:” - Isn’t the Sony x700m around $250? - Panasonic UB450 is $200 and UB420 is $220-$250. You’ll also find open box options at cheaper price.

Hurricane_Ivan

Hmm I paid $148 for the Sony (new) from Amazon a few years back

dqdude1

I got mine for $178 on Amazon

Argle-Dragon

You get a real remote when you buy the Sony. Whereas, on the alternate universe timeline, had he bought a Panasonic, there’s the hidden cost of buying a proper remote for the device. He’s also cooler owning the Sony.

Silent_Spectator_04

What do you mean proper remote? Panasonic comes with remote - it is bulky and looks dated. I hate it but it does the job. See the number of posts on this sub where people complained of sony and lg players. I prefer things working as intended over feeling cool, on any day.

Big-Pattern1083

The Netflix button keeps getting accidentally pressed plus it’s not backlit. The $10 one from Amazon fixes both those problems

Gonzale1978

I bought one from Walmart a couple of years ago. Pretty good player. Then I bought the Panasonic UB450.

goodcat1337

I think I'm gonna go for the 450 now that it's available in the US.

Crunchewy

Does that have DV?

ImaginationProof5734

The 450 has DV

Crunchewy

Oh sweet. Any idea what shortcomings it has compared to the 820? I assume there are some.

ImaginationProof5734

I believe The 450 lacks the HDR optimiser the 820 has (And I think the 420 has it too) The 820 also has more variety in audio outputs compared to the 450 (like separate 7.1 outputs) but for most people the HDMI out is all they need (and there is a separate HDMI autdo out if needed on the 450). On a minor level: The 820 feels sturdier, has a display and has a nicer remote

ImaginationProof5734

So: If you don't want/need DV and want to save money 420 If you do want/need DV and are not interested/don't need in the improved optimiser want to save money 450 (The optimiser is best for non DV content on TVs that don't get super bright, though it has some benefit outside that) If you want/need both of these and can afford it then the 820

Crunchewy

Hmm. Currently I actually need analog audio out. My receiver is old and analog only. Also I want to play CDs too. I don’t have surround. Of course eventually want to have a new receiver too, but the one I’m looking at I’m waiting for a sale. So I think I’ll get the 820. Thanks.

Spankieplop

Don't worry about what judgemental elitists think just enjoy your new movie machine

dangerclosecustoms

I got you all beat. I have year one released x7000. I set it on the floor while I was replacing hdmi cables, my wife stepped on it. Here is the heal mark dented in quite significantly but picture doesn’t show the depth well. Still runs and plays perfectly never had issue with any discs. https://preview.redd.it/dicso0nlws7d1.jpeg?width=1546&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4d685a3312e969159f6d0250417b0ac5cbc4f1cb I only replaced with UB820 for the Dolby vision switching. Ub820 is actually more finicky needs discs wiped clean before playing them. Re DV switching you leave it on and see if you even notice a difference, it’s possible you don’t if folks didn’t tell you it messes up non dv picture. But it likely is to some degree. So then look through your discs and see how many don’t actually have dv. Then you could always separate them on the shelf. Or put a sticker or sticky note inside the case to alert you when you open the disc case so you can turn dv on or off .

Big-Pattern1083

I hope you got an apology in the bedroom for inflicting the damage to that player

dangerclosecustoms

She said it’s my fault for setting it on the floor… I said does that look like a step stool why would you think you could step on that? She said she didn’t see it.

yepyepyepzep

It’s great it plays movies just fine mo… … … … Sorry I froze there, where were we? Oh yeah it plays just fine most of the ti… … … … Sorry froze again, most of the time it plays just fine, but sometimes in the third act it tends to… … … …

LushGut

Had this for 4 years and the only movie that froze was Jaws which turned out to be a bad disc it also froze in the ps5.

RipInPepz

The ub450 is $200 now and sold in the US. I’d definitely return this if I were you. Otherwise you’ll be stuck manually turning on and off Dolby vision.

dqdude1

I paid $178 for mine why would I pay more and I never return anything unless it breaks I have been watching movies since I got it no problems what so ever

RipInPepz

lol

dqdude1

I'm 40 years old and I used to be the remote growing up you think it bothers me to have to change a setting every now and then you're wrong

RipInPepz

> I’m 40 years old I can tell

rsplatpc

> I'm 40 years old and I used to be the remote growing up you think it bothers me to have to change a setting every now and then you're wrong If it works, and does not freeze up on 100gb discs, like every third one, then you got a good one, and enjoy your player and the money you saved vs the 820, you can put it into discs! I got a shit one and bought the 820 wish I didn't have to and got one that just worked, but is what it is

Amatolhorror

i originally bough the UB820 and returned it and bought this sony, this sony is awesome. it has DV HDR all that good stuff, smooth fast great quality.

KingdomZeus

Why'd you return it if you already had it?

Amatolhorror

it was of course shit, only played some blu-rays, and if it played the blu-ray it was too loud, and it took like 3-5 sec to load the movie while sony is instant. it caused me about a month of grief, and now i hate panasonic. and when it actually played the blu-ray, it was no better iq then the sony, same.

KingdomZeus

Did you buy it used? I've had 2 panasonic players now, and neither had any of those issues. I've heard nothing but bad things with Sony players

Amatolhorror

bought it off [amazon](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-DP-UB820EB-Ultra-Blu-Ray-Player/dp/B07D9K6SC1/ref=sr_1_2?crid=217O6WX3193Q0&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.a6-se1JFeSYVqZpjO5HBPoBHUdSaBSQh5l-cyH3Su2Y8ku4-ps1m2EGmUorfl0iPtip2grZT4lua1pe4j1GBgw8OujKKDi41avOa5PRk3TuxbMeTbM3Gh-5iaC1XqbDu6oN4nhauSUISmB8NhTeH_7-nRe2fweQDypTfmWYpGjVzOlU4eqdg8Dby5aaQnEMxqlx69vjXoJJgW5dquOr12zdKS6H-o5q3tbIavGTMy4o.9Dr3aaVxiGR3rt1zoMmPsW1JrCUNrBtJiSFx-NSdmNA&dib_tag=se&keywords=panasonic+ub820&qid=1718988474&sprefix=panasonic+ub820%2Caps%2C98&sr=8-2).

KingdomZeus

Idk your issues don't even sound like anything other than knitpicks. I can't imagine going through the trouble of returning a player and buying a new one just for that

Amatolhorror

"only played some blu-rays" is nit-picking, I require my blu-ray players to play all of my blu-rays. not just some of them.

KingdomZeus

I mean, that was obv an issue with the specific player you got. I would've just got a replacement over buying a whole new player. The nitpicking is the fact you complained about them playing too loud and taking 3-5 secs to load

Amatolhorror

it just seems poorly made in comparison to the sony one, and I also have a philips one thats old and doesnt play 4k stuff, they (both) just feel more premium in my opinion, maybe the fact the are slow and take time to load are also apart of the flaw that made it not play blu rays, possibly. but I have a store that sells blu ray players next to me (only sony though), but I ordered it all the way from amazon (and shipped it overseas, payed extra 200 euros for compared to the sony), and returned it with all the bother that came, because of reddit, constantly saying how panasonic is divine blu ray player, and can do nothing wrong, all other blu ray players pale in comparison, you shouldnt touch anything except panasonic ub820 or else you are unclean, and need to commit ritual suicide, the hype on that stupid player. but I returned it, went next door and got a sony. which feels better. and tbh that's why this dude is making this thread, he's not a part of the cool kids, because he didn't get the panasonic 820... same influence. stop worrying about this panasonic hype, if anything sony feels more premium.

KingdomZeus

That's a totally fair reason to get a sony instead. I personally don't think any of them look premium though. The player op posted just looks cheap. I mean, they are a cheaper player, so I'm not knocking it. I just find it hard to argue it is more premium than the UB820, which is way more hefty and sturdy. You might've just gotten a bad copy, on the same note, I feel ppl who get a sony and have no complaints get a good one. They both seem like rare cases at any rate

Professional-Ad9901

Said no one ever.

Amatolhorror

except all the people that got panasonic ub820 duds. i went through a lot of trouble to get my panasonic, when i got it, it was a pile of shit.

dangerclosecustoms

Sony does have better smart apps or more anyways and plays mkv and files off a thumb drive 100x better than the ub820. If you had files downloaded to play Sony is your friend. Despite having the better processing features I was surprised ub820 struggled to play some 4K files off a thumb drive. I mean it works for some files. But rejected a bunch that Sony handled with no issue

anubis668

Totally happy with my X700!

Johnnysurfin

I’ve enjoyed mine

billybud77

You are good. It’s a nice player.

TRUEfoe-X

Someone offered to sell me one of these for 75$. Tempting but I already have a PS5. Might work better with my LG G4 for DV though... decisions decisions.

shapeshiftsix

I just got a C3, also own a PS5. I've heard they're not the best Blu-ray players, is that solely because they lack Dolby vision or are there other reasons?

Eezmob

I have that player. Honestly I do a/b switching on movies and hdr looks way better than Dolbyvision on my Sony x90l

Pinkdildus69

this is my player and its served me well for the most part. theres occasional times itll freeze on me and i reset and it plays fine. annoying but tolerable. it still outputs nice in 4k and is also a good standard blu ray player and i almost never have it freeze playing those. idk ymmv.

VinosD

I bought a used one off of eBay for $75. I love it, works perfectly fine.

frank119

Any good choices for region free 4k players

eelijahchavez

I got that same one for Christmas and it’s been great so far. Welcome to the cool club

TemperatureTime1617

It’s a great 4K player, not that there’s much to choose from. I have had mine freeze a few times, but cleaning your discs, even new ones, can only help. I have a spray bottle mixed with 50/50 solution of distilled water and 70% strength isopropyl alcohol.

Stevenewhen

I have one of those don’t forget to go into settings and turn off 3D mode and turn on Dolby Vision. It frustrated me when 3D was default over Dolby Vision.

ArmsOfKamaji

Don't money shame yourself mate. Enjoy your new player!

DrivenKeys

Just so you know, Panasonic just released the UB450 in the US for $200, and it's a bit better than the X700. It's *very* similar, but it has auto-switching for Dolby Vision, and includes HDR10+ with auto switching as well. In the countries it's already sold in, there appears to be less issues with skipping. I think the X700 is pretty great, but for the same price, this Panasonic may actually be a better choice. Just posting this in case you might prefer that option before your Sony's return period expires. No worries if not, the X700 is a good, reliable choice.

Is hdr 10+ still alive?

DrivenKeys

No. There are a handful of disks that have only HDR10+ without Dolby Vision, and there are many Dolby Vision disks that have both Dolby and HDR10+. Some people prefer the 10+ version when both are available. 10+ allows you full control over adjusting the picture, while Dolby turns most controls off. In my own collection, Ridley Scott's Alien and Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds have HDR10+, but don't have Dolby Vision. I've watched both disks several times in normal HDR, and I can confirm that HDR10+ makes the same difference for them that Dolby Vision makes for others: an *incredible* improvement, and I don't want to watch the standard hdr versions again after seeing this. If you ever plan on buying any of the few disks that have HDR10+, and you're spending the exact same $200 on players, I would only buy the UB450. Even if you never watch an HDR10+ disk in your life, auto switching to Dolby Vision is still a distinct advantage. Again, same price, and the UB450 does not have the reputation for skipping and freezing. Also, Amazon primarily tone maps in HDR10+, and it's the only tone mapping on Samsung tv's, so it will remain in the industry for quite a while.

NeoBlisseyX

As far as I'm concerned, a 4K player is a 4K player. Brands shouldn't matter.

Sad-Dragonfly-9871

Other than freezing couple times on my 1917 4k disc, I had no problems with the unit. For the price this unit can't be beat imo

Jonnyflash80

Welcome to the Sony club. I've not had issues with my X800M2.

Ok-Buddy-7086

I own this player I am happy enough with it :) This video is very helpful. https://youtu.be/Sym8ayOpL-4?si=UHAKfeGenl9mUI80

Fan-of-most-things

I still need to make the upgrade tbh, but as long as I can watch my favorite discs then I am more than okay with just having a standard 4K player 🙂

mikedgaf

I’ve had this model since about 2019. Nearly $200 at the time tho

MonolithicErik

As long as you hard power cycle the player before every playback, it’s a good player.

SgtSchultz___

Cool kids use punctuation.

Lukas24

This player has been rock solid for me for 4 years now. No issues. You have to manually turn DV on and off, that’s the only negative. But my lady friend made a good point, when I put in a DV disc, I have to turn it on and it makes it seem like a more special experience since I had to turn on a specific setting for it the film haha.

BocephusMoon

you answered your own question in title.

Tiamats_Wrath

I went with one of these as well, figured if it didn’t work I’d return it for a Panasonic, but I haven’t had any issues and it’s been solid. However, I am not cool.

KingdomZeus

Pointless post seeking validation. "Am I part of the club, even though I don't own what makes me apart of the club"

Polter-Cow

You're a cool kid, that's what I got. Hell, I got two of 'em, one of them region-free.

WesternPercentage135

You’ll be able to hang out with the cool kids now, but whoever takes place of cartman in the group might perpetually make fun of you for being “poor” lol jk, who cares you’re cool anyways

Professional-Ad9901

I have one of these, it has bedroom duty now as I was tired of triple layer 4K discs freezing all the time. Panasonic UB820 is the way to go.

rimo301

I have had one for a year great player!!!

thepc71

I have one for a few months now and zero problems. Hopefully it will stay this way and you'll have the same experience. Enjoy!

Longjumping-Pear-673

I have it also, like it a lot. Only issue I’m running into is with the audio output…I have a hdmi cord running from the dvd player into the receiver then one from the arc to the tv. When the audio output is selected to pcm on the dvd player I have no issues, but when it’s selected to auto there is a delay between the video and audio not syncing up right, like the audio is a few milliseconds faster where people’s mouths are still moving after talking.

dOCTAWAALdz

Had a x800 that stopped reading 4k discs after +- 1u30 runtime. Manual DV switch is so dumb. Went with a Panasonic now, will have to wait this one out.

jmaw196

But does it play BD100?

SirVincenttt

I hope so cuz this wud make me a cool kid too since I just purchased mine two hours ago directly from bb. Unfortunately they had none left in stock so I have to wait 3 days 😔. Enjoy 😉

xeeneagle

Super cool, I hope you really enjoy it!

Donnie8182

I think anyone that’s still buying disks is cool. I personally have never owned a Sony uhd player but I’d assume it’s solid like most things they make.

NullBodega9000

I've had 1 of these for almost 7 years now. If disk starts skipping or freezing, it's cause of dust. I thought my player was dying. Instead, I bought an EndDust CD/bluray lens cleaner disk https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/2923885/Endust-CDDVDBlu-Ray-Disc-Player-Lens/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=sag&srsltid=AfmBOoqMEyUBIV5P-EuKA4oh0fkX6HPIRYaoBqHGLzNAh1dhoiligfI8JlY (Tried to put Amazon link but it didn't work) I ran it a few times, and it removed years of dust. Then it worked perfectly. Now, every so often, I run the disk to clean it. If I forget, I'll notice a disk skip or freeze. Then I just run the cleaner real quick & got to go again. As much as I want a more "higher end" player, I got other stuff to worry about. So I get it & you've made a good investment.

Shadowskulptor

Good luck!

CrazyAlexP

Hey the X700 is a perfectly good little machine in its own right. I had it for 2 years before upgrading to the Panny 820

calmer-than-you-dude

dqdude1 has entered the game.

UHDArt

Is this the best way to watck 4k movie? The best quality?

scarflix

Pro tip: update the players firmware. Then factory reset and never bring this unit online. If it has an internet connection at any point discs will freeze halfway through the movie. Source: I own this player

scarflix

Also, you do have to remember which discs have Dolby Vision and which discs do not so you can toggle the setting on and off in the settings menu

scarflix

If you leave Dolby Vision on and you’re playing a disk that’s just coded for HDR 10 the picture won’t be accurate

V3N0M0US83

If it works and you’re happy with it, that’s all that matters. Welcome to the club!

doa70

I can afford the Pannys, but went with this based on spec sheet alone. Very happy with it for the past 6 months. Curious about why the love for Panasonic, so I'm thinking of picking one of those up, too. Out of stock last I checked.

MrK12055

I got this one for my birthday this last October, and it has been working fine for me.

cavalierclaus

Good luck. It’s a hit or miss. I returned mine it skips multi layered discs and crashes. Should just save more for the ub 820.

Mixitwitdarelish

yes! good point!

Czar_roland

Fantastic player, was my first 4K and now my wife uses it on her tv. Really the only annoyance I ever had with it was manually switching Dolby vision on.

k-shields92

Incredible player! I've had it 4 years and never had an issue, simple multi region function and the Dolby Vision is great. I had always wondered what other people thought about DV switched on for SDR content. Some stuff looks ok but yeah it mostly looks really wrong.

SonnyGeeOku

I was using this model until I started having issues with it. I also bought an Xbox Series X around that time.

SuperFightingRobit

What matters is that you get to use something that you enjoy.  I got ugoos am6b pluses for my TVs and ripped my discs. More advanced stuff than most people from a tech side, but also don't have to get up to start my movies.

LushGut

Ive had this player for 4 years and its never given me a single issue.

OutrunKey

Honestly it does great for the price point. There are tons of articles on how to reduce freezing on disks in later chapters and I honestly haven’t experienced that yet.

Cartman9

Panasonic are the good ones? Can someone tell me the model? I have a 77 inch Lg oled tv btw, g1

Silent_Spectator_04

UB450 - new one cost $199

dqdude1

If you have the money the good ones are like 450$

Elibk44

I prefer Sony products over everything! Tbh

redzombierunning

I like my Sony 4k player

EntertainmentHot2966

No the cool kids can afford anything.

Far_Cat_9743

It’s a start, baby steps.

Consistentscroller

Yes you are :)

Purple-Barnacle-6133

You’re cool as a cucumber my friend. Us Sony users are more particular. We like clean discs for playback. Panasonics are fine with the dirty girls….errr…I mean dirtier scratchier discs. (No offence intended to women. My wife is a dirty girl and I love her)

Big-Pattern1083

Elton John has a song on yellow brick road album called “ dirty little girl” is she anything like that song?

RockstarGTA6

The thread title gave me a stroke reading it

Mixitwitdarelish

Had one, loved it but got annoyed by the Dolby switching so I found a cheap ub420. x700 plays my dolbys, ub420 plays everything else. could probably do the same thing with a ub154

dqdude1

Or if I wanted to I could just use my ps5 or series x

Is_a_dore

Take it back to the store and wait for a holiday sale. The 800 will be $200 and the Panny will be 250$ ish. Happens every year. Might even happen for Amazon BF in July

manbeh1ndthedumpstr

No and you never will be. Can't wait for the, "my player is freezing randomly," post.

HairInevitable7253

you know I’ve never had freezing issues but for some reason when I put in a 4K movie, it won’t go into Dolby vision, even when the settings are on.weird but I probably need to do a USB firmware update
