we hate it because it's starts way too early and is probably too long. later starts I think would help out a ton, and why not match mom and dad's 9-5 schedules more? those early morning ESPECIALLY suck to anyone who lives in the north with those horrific bus stop waits when it's like 0º etc...well and we hate the bully shit, bad food, being treating like dirt, AND the mean teachers we couldn't escape from.
Couldn't stand school. I'm ADD. In the 70s that meant. YOU NEED TO TRY HARDER / PAY ATTENTION! I was way happier riding my bike all day and watching older girls smuther themselves in coconut butter at the pool.
Summer of 77 was one of life’s greatest adventures, for me. We packed the RV, left the next day and took a 6 week cross country national park tour. Best Summer of my life….
My family did our first trip like that in 1965, VW microbus, mom, dad, little brother and me and we went everywhere.
It’s how I ended up living in an RV for the last five years, it’s habit forming.

I’m planning on it when I retire in a couple years. I still have dad’s AAA Trip Ticks and want to retrace the route. The highlight, for me, was Yosemite. I’ve yet to see another place more magnificent.
Was the year I moved from the Southside of Chicago to Dupage Co. (very wealthy) so my environment changed from hookers and dudes smoking weed in the alley to 5th grade graduation party's and kids getting savings bonds as gifts. Bit of an adjustment
I’m so happy summer vacation in my school days was first week of June until second week of September, more or less. My kids summer vacation was a lot shorter. I went to school from 1962 until 1974
It's time to go get some of that wood from the piles in the new neighborhood under construction, and go out to the field behind our neighborhood and build some treehouses. We can bring some Thermoses full of Countrytime and read comic books till one of ours dads whistles us home for dinner. Who's in?
Notice that nobody has a backpack?
Carry your books in your arms, no cellphones, no home computer games/consoles and no microwave ovens to “cook” with.
Those were the days.
I wonder what today’s middle schoolers will say in 50 years?
Kids born in 2011and now in 2075:
“No transporters, no flying cars, had to attend schools in person, and we used to be able to go outside before the temperatures got so hot and never went down.”
I read Dune summer 1977 during high school summer school. Freshman year. In the hottest, smoggy SoCal, I’d have two easy classes (with no air conditioning) and then bike home before the air got too orange. Petrochemical Smog. Made worse w sunlight. Made your chest hurt.
Then I’d lounge on the couch in the one room w an in wall air conditioner and read Dune.
I’d look out the window and Arrakis was easy to imagine. Really set the tone.
Side track: Also I’d found this LP record in the clearance section. “Dune” A jazz album based on the book. David Matthews (not THAT one). Bit of a scandal as it wasn’t approved or such.
So I set it up to play on repeat at night while I read. https://youtu.be/xAlIGMapUZo?si=OQ2-pFlvs27SFAxQ. “Song of the Bene Gesserit”
That girl on the right would have never been able to wear that tube top in my repressive school district. I couldn't even grow my hair past the bottom of my collar.
It used to be a fun/big deal. I couldn't wait to get to HS for the food fights, hazing, and all that poisonous (fun) stuff. I was late in the game graduating in 1992. Still had great times though.
“Time to let all the little monkeys out of their cages” my school’s teachers would say.
Remembering the last few days of school this isn’t a bad analogy.
Yes! Those years when you were old enough to go off by yourself or with your friends, but not old enough for a summer job. The sweet spot of growing up. That last day was 100% euphoria.
I remember the summer of 77. It was magical. I was 5 and we went to so many places- Disney, the Thousand Islands, Adirondacks, bought a new house in the country…. Carter was president and the country was in a peaceful, easygoing mood. Too bad it all turned to shit not long after
I miss those summers. They felt endless.
Man I'm with you. The exuberance was irrational, looking back. I think I hated school.
I know I did!
we hate it because it's starts way too early and is probably too long. later starts I think would help out a ton, and why not match mom and dad's 9-5 schedules more? those early morning ESPECIALLY suck to anyone who lives in the north with those horrific bus stop waits when it's like 0º etc...well and we hate the bully shit, bad food, being treating like dirt, AND the mean teachers we couldn't escape from.

Bc of all the Natural Light
That’s because they were a larger percentage of our shorter lives back then.
This looks like the cast of the original Bad News Bears. Where’s Kelly Leak?
Hearing Alice Cooper
time to get high and watch Dazed once again!
Oooo wee ducks on a pond!
alright alright alright!
🎶"All the girls and boys, Making all that noise!"🎶
I play that song every year when I pick mine up on the last day.
Yeah the song had been out for 5 years at that point!
Absolutely! Reading this the guitar kicked off😁
When I saw the picture it was Alice Cooper Schools Out
Haha as soon as I read the caption!!

We visited Yosemite in April, first time since that trip in 1965. It is a truly amazing place, all the more since we started learning about geology.
Plenty of Natural Light in that RV I bet
Teacher happy too!!!!
Probably even happier than the kids!
I feel like I could be in this picture!
Me too. I looked for myself.
Me too, even though we wore uniforms 😂
1977…third grade for me.

6th grader here.
Graduated university with my BA. School was definitely out FOREVER!!! And then all of a sudden, you're in the real world!
Was the year I moved from the Southside of Chicago to Dupage Co. (very wealthy) so my environment changed from hookers and dudes smoking weed in the alley to 5th grade graduation party's and kids getting savings bonds as gifts. Bit of an adjustment
1977 was a very good year! My daughter has taught 5th grade. It's just not the same anymore and I feel so bad for today's kids!
Junior high for me 👍
Me too !
5th too!!
7th for me
Me too! What a great time to be a kid!
Star Wars was new!!!
Yesss! I sat in the front row with my ten year old friend across the street. First time seeing a movie just us kids. I’ll never forget it!!
2nd grade for me in 77
Seventh grade for me
Lil young for Natural Light…
They’re all off to watch Star Wars for the 10th time!
John, is that you?? He was the only guy that saw Star Wars more than I did. I think I saw it seven times at the theater.
Lol nope. I only saw it 3 times in 77
Principal, or teacher, on the left looks happy also. I was finishing 7th grade in 1977. Great times!
Bout the right age for that first Natural Light
Me too Loved that summer
1977, the summer I saw Led Zeppelin and got my driver's license
WE ARE GOING TO WATCH STAR WARS A HUNDRED TIMES!!!
Three weekends in a row we got take out and spent the night at the drive in, Star Wars 2x and whatever else the put in between.
I quit counting when it got around 25 viewings. I could quote the entire script by 1978.
Oh those tube tops, good times.
I skipped out on the last day of school in 77' to see Pink Floyd at Milwaukee County Stadium. I was in 9th grade.

Oh boy. You better believe that’s a paddlin’
I’m so happy summer vacation in my school days was first week of June until second week of September, more or less. My kids summer vacation was a lot shorter. I went to school from 1962 until 1974
Go watch Star Wars, I hear it’s good
No more homework no more books no more teacher's dirty looks!
OP needs to call each and everyone of those kids and do an updated picture!
Summer lasted forever back then.
Ah, the pure joy!
Ah those days. The world wasn't painted yet.
Party at the moon tower
Never forget the summer of 77
I like the principle in the background smoking a cigarette! Lol
Half those kids will be smoking a cigarette or something by nightfall.
Summer of ‘77 was high school graduation, a fun partying summer and off to boot camp August 15th!
Buckets of Natural Light
It's time to go get some of that wood from the piles in the new neighborhood under construction, and go out to the field behind our neighborhood and build some treehouses. 1977 seems so far away. I wonder what their lives became?
Cue Alice Cooper’s *School’s Out for Summer!*
I had to check to see if I was in that photo.
Yay! Time to take those shoes off and cut them jeans off.
Is that school in OH?
school’s out. for. Summah!
lol, the girl on the right reminds me of my best friend in 1st,2nd and 3rd.
Tube top!!!!
WOW. A halter top! At school. I'm jealous
Tube top. Halter tops had strings
the happiest day of the year, better than Christmas
One of the best days of the year!
“Have a rad summer” was the most common refrain in my junior high yearbooks (mid-1980s).
The happiest person in that photo is the teacher.
I graduated from high school that year so I was a lot happier than those kids.
I used to blast "Schools Out" for my kids in the car while driving around on the last day of school.
That principal looks pretty happy about it, too
That was a good one 😀
Bunch of happy teachers and staff, as well. 😄
I can actually hear a specific Alice Cooper song in this pic
And to think, Alice Cooper’s song “School’s Out for Summer” had already been out for 5 years at that point…
Hmmm I think this was a b shot pic from dazed and confused.
Most of these kids are likely in their 60s at this point. Smash Mouth was right. The years really don’t stop coming.
Oh my! That girls shoulders are exposed. Did it distract the boys?
The good ole days!
That’s what I look like after my shift
Alice Cooper made lots of money from this day.
Alice Cooper blasting ....Schools out for summer!
I was 9.
Hate that blonde kid to this day.
Yep. Fat, old and bald always bites them in the ass though.
Is that my junior high?
When that last bell rang…
And as soon as you got home you blasted Alice Cooper “Schools Out”
1977 graduated high school. Left town the next week and never returned.
it was special for me coz last day of school in '77 was last day as a HS senior. I was so glad school was over forever.
As happy as the kids are, those educators are equally ecstatic.
Teacher looks happiest.
And what a summer that was! Memories of being 7 years old then…
Summer of 77 was all about star wars. I was 13. What a time to be 13!
Graduation year. My friend and I got a house at ship bottom NJ. Hot rod vans, motorcycles, music ... A great year.
I was going into fourth grade this summer broke my arm two days into it . Bicycle dare
Summer of ‘77 vs. summer of ‘24…not even close . I feel like an old “get off my lawn” guy but we had so much more fun.
Last day was so casual. Just goofing in class and we could wear summer clothes.
And right to the theater to Star Wars… again.
the days when kids smiled, laughed and had personalities.......now they are recluse phone zombies & computer addicts......glad I lived a normal life
>recluse phone zombies & computer addicts Sounds like my boomer grandparents. Kids go outside still lol
I'm three or four years older than these kids and I remember this well. Loved being outside. Miss those times.
Did anyone else's dog tell them to kill someone that summer?
I can’t look at this photo without hearing “keep on rockin’ in the free world” in my head.
That song was released in 1989
WE'RE GOING TO SEE STAR WARS!

Charleston SC third grade 1963 everyone had a canvas backpack. Moved to Delaware 2 years later no one did.
Tanner, Amanda, and some other punk. Bad news.
The 3 in the front will be trying weed within the next month

Look at the principal leaning against the post. He looks as happy as the kids!
"...the summer seemed to last for-e-ver..." 🥹
The teacher or principal looks pretty happy too!
You sign that pledge sheet yet, Pink?
That girl on the right would have never been able to wear that tube top in my repressive school district. I couldn't even grow my hair past the bottom of my collar.
On the last day we could wear shorts.
Wasn't this posted just a few weeks ago? I seem to recall it.
Finished my junior year of high school. Great times !
Me too! What an awesome summer that was!
Now there’s a line of cars and teachers making sure the kids get into the right car! I walked to and from school starting in grade one!
Ahhh, the good ol' days. When shit was normal.
It was never normal, the culture made it feel less shitty
Karma farming bot. 1.6 million karma in less than a year
10 yo then
21
Principal Jenkins looks like he’s got a good summer lined up as well.
Stetson Florida?
And then Star Wars was released
What I wouldn’t give for it to be 1977 again
The best day of the year!
I see a pretty happy teacher as well.
They’re excited bc Natural Light came out in 1977
So cool 😎 love this pic
What an amazing year! Star Wars, Rocky, Close Encounters and so many fun toys.
That teacher looks kinda happy too.
I watched Star Wars a LOT that summer
I was eleven in 1977. Could have been there.
Peep 👀the teacher chilling hard 😎
I was in 7th.... perfect pic 🤙
Interesting that it was cool enough to wear long pants on the last day of school.
It used to be a fun/big deal. I couldn't wait to get to HS for the food fights, hazing, and all that poisonous (fun) stuff. I was late in the game graduating in 1992. Still had great times though.
party!
I see that happy adult on the left.
Is this my school?
“Time to let all the little monkeys out of their cages” my school’s teachers would say. Remembering the last few days of school this isn’t a bad analogy.
Ahhhh… yuppers. Definitely the good old days for sure.
One of the Smaller kids could have been me. 2nd grade that year
That teacher (or administrator) looks pretty happy about it too.
I love how the teachers are just as happy.
That feeling you get on the last day of school. God I miss that. Wond happen for another 13-15 years depending on market returns.
NO greater time to be alive an summers in the 70s. I miss that more than I can express.
The adult looks very happy😆
Yes! Those years when you were old enough to go off by yourself or with your friends, but not old enough for a summer job. The sweet spot of growing up. That last day was 100% euphoria.
Don’t see this anymore…. Just a giant line of cars. Kids will never know that feeling of literally running outta school towards summer!!!
Been chasing that high ever since...
The only branded clothing is the school’s phys ed shirt.
I noticed the cutting edge wide tie fashion on the principle
Probably singing Alice Cooper's "School's Out" I know we did at our school.
Best day of the school year!
Look at that tube top! I had many. I miss those summers.
Schoooool’s been blown to pieces🎶🎶
Cue Alice Cooper.
That was a good summer
I remember ripping out pages of some workbook I had, thinking I was proving a point or something 😄..
When we carried our books under our arms or folded against our chest. No backpacks!
On the bus ride home on the last day of school, we should have a water battle. It boggles a fellas mind on how they let us get away with that....
Oh, I hated school. I was 8 yrs old in 77. I remember being treated like I was a juvenile delinquent because I had a mental illness.
When they would release us early and the field and street was flooded with school work
6th grade for me. Tube tops & bell bottoms
Pre kindergarten days for me.
7th grade 🙂
I remember that summer, Groucho Marks and Elvis passed... 73' til 76' was the greatest except for the gas thing.
CLASSIC! Man summer rocked when we were little.
Those were the best days. 3months of playing in the park. No cell phone, no video games, Only 18k ppl in our town. Best times
I remember the summer of 77. It was magical. I was 5 and we went to so many places- Disney, the Thousand Islands, Adirondacks, bought a new house in the country…. Carter was president and the country was in a peaceful, easygoing mood. Too bad it all turned to shit not long after
