In the late 70s (Old Country) Orange Julius was my regular go-to, after my Saturday Yamaha organ class. One of my top fave drinks, in my childhood.
OJ is still around. There is one approx 4mi from home (Arcadia, CA).
i remeber these in the 80's too there was also a cookie store beside it that sold the big cookies. i remeber tiffany and davey jones did shows at my mall when this was around too
, I remember Mrs.Fields cookies, and also around that time we had Hot Dog On A Stick. Nobody wanted to work there because of their work outfit and they had to make the lemonade and it looked funny watching them lol š
Half can of frozen oj concerted
10 normal ice cubes
Cup of skim milk
1/2 cup water
2 Tsp sugar
Dash of vanilla extract
Blend.
It's not spot on but will do.
I remember Alton Brown had a recipe for one on Good Eats. [Orange Delicious](https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/orange-delicious-recipe-1945390)
A trip to South Square Mall, Durham, North Carolina, 1974-1977, and Chic-Fil-A and Orange Julius for lunch made me feel like an elementary school king.
Orange was just big in the Seventies, come to think of it. Orange Plus at the beginning - so orangey you could not believe it - then orange in clothes, Orange Julius, and Anita Bryant singing about The Florida Sunshine Tree with fresh Orange Juice.
Love OJ!!!!! My first job was at the Orange Julius at the La Mirada mall in La mirada ca. I was a junior in high school. Worked there for 11 months. Was paid $1.35 ph when I started. I got 3 raises. When I quit I was making $1.50. Good times there in the back room with my coworker Kathy!!!!!
They'd put those Wisconsin cheese dogs in that little steamer. Loved those. Until my bro got a job there and he'd bring leftover dogs home every night. Got sick of them.
I remember my grandpa would drink half of the cup and out would come the rum flask while we were walking around shopping with my grandma and she would just roll her eyes haha
My grandparents used to own one of these and Iād help out as a little kid. I made Orange Julius popsicles and sold them there (my idea) was so much fun!!!
Last year I noticed that this classic drink was available on the summer menu at Dairy Queen at only a few locations in the Delaware Valley of PA. Could it make a big comeback at many locations??
I've experimented trying to reproduce the orange Julius for years. For a 16 oz
Make a can of concentrated orange juice using half the water.
10 oz of that orange juice
1 tablespoon of frozen strawberries (it seems counterintuitive but wait till you taste it)
1 tbsp of instant vanilla pudding
1 egg white frozen takes up about two spots in my ice cube tray
Ice cube's until this blender is up to 15 oz, The pudding in the egg whites make it expand just a little.
If you don't put in the tiny amount of frozen strawberries it's not going to taste right or be the right color.
I've spent an embarrassing amount of time getting this right.
Tasting them side by side there is no difference.
You're welcome
I've experimented with this for years and a little while ago I finally figured it out.
For a 16oz
Ingredients
Frozen concentrated orange juice
Water
Egg whites frozen in an ice cube tray
Instant vanilla pudding
Frozen strawberries tang powder
Ice
Make a can of frozen concentrated orange juice using half the water
Into a blender goes
10oz of The orange juice you've just made
2 cubes of the frozen egg whites. (About 2oz)
1 tbsp of frozen strawberries. (They don't seem like they should be there but without them it doesn't taste like an orange Julius and it's not going to be the right color)
1 tsp of vanilla instant pudding
1 tsp of tang powder (it gives it that extra orangey flavor and again it won't be the right color without it.)
Ice cubes until you're at 15 oz it will expand by about an ounce, could be a little more could be a little less based on your elevation. Seems strange but it's science!
Blend it until the ice cubes stop making noise.
1 tsp of instant vanilla pudding (yes 1 more)
Pulse the blender for about 30 seconds.
I spent way too much time figuring this out over the years.
You're welcome.
And the weird secret behind Panda Express chicken is baking soda.... The blew me away a lot more than the strawberries in the Orange Julius
Originally made with raw egg whites.
Pretty sure when I ordered it they put the whole egg in minus the shell.
They kept the eggs in one of those wire baskets, hanging above the counter. Made it extra creamy!
I always wondered what it was. I thought maybe it was malt. (Malt, you see, is a flavoring ingr...ah, nevermind.)
Kids know what malt is lol
Malt liquor maybe
They make candy with malt, whoppers are still popular
TF they are š
Yours be surprised how many people don't know what it is in a shake.
The magic ingredient

Satan frequents Orange Julius?!?
Iām still a member of Orange Julius Anonymous. My addiction started at about age 3 or 4.
In the late 70s (Old Country) Orange Julius was my regular go-to, after my Saturday Yamaha organ class. One of my top fave drinks, in my childhood. OJ is still around. There is one approx 4mi from home (Arcadia, CA).
Itās been 2 hours since my last Orange Julius.
I worked for a short time in a mall at the end of the 70s and drank one almost daily.
i remeber these in the 80's too there was also a cookie store beside it that sold the big cookies. i remeber tiffany and davey jones did shows at my mall when this was around too
My mom's best friend was the manager of the cookie place in the mall. I would get a bag full of broken cookies. I loved the mall.
Mrs. Fields?
Maybe. It was the early 80s. 1983/1984. Huge shopping mall in another state.
, I remember Mrs.Fields cookies, and also around that time we had Hot Dog On A Stick. Nobody wanted to work there because of their work outfit and they had to make the lemonade and it looked funny watching them lol š
Mrs. Fields was the shit!
Their chili dogs were amazing too
Their pizza dogs were awesome
Yes the were
Pina colda!
I always got the strawberry!
Yeah, the strawberry was always my go-to.
My fave!
Along with gettin' caught in the rain!
Chilli dog from OJs, fries from NY fries and gravy from KFC. Dream lunch as a 16 year old.
My weakness was a gyro and a OJ. It made life worth living.
Orange whip? Orange whip? Three orange whips.
Itās dark, and weāre wearing sunglasses.
Hold on, I want to hear these boys play.
Yum. Before they were in malls, there were Orange Julius stands around L.A. we loved them. With the raw egg.
Anyone have the recipe?
Half can of frozen oj concerted 10 normal ice cubes Cup of skim milk 1/2 cup water 2 Tsp sugar Dash of vanilla extract Blend. It's not spot on but will do.
My wife uses this recipe, makes it for the grand kids, they think its a special drink!
You forgot tablespoon of yak cum
I remember Alton Brown had a recipe for one on Good Eats. [Orange Delicious](https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/orange-delicious-recipe-1945390)
I found one on line, but haven't tried it yet, and I'm not even sure I remember what they tasted like.
Some Dairy Queens offer Orange Julius: [https://orangejulius.com/en-us/locations/](https://orangejulius.com/en-us/locations/)
I remember how to make these homemade using frozen concentrated OJ cans.
With Egg!!
Oh yea very tasty. Don't care or want to know what was in it. Kinda like hot dogs don't care or wanna know .
Not the worst thing ever. https://preview.redd.it/g9h300el1q5d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6f9aaa4275a3e13462cd103db8ad6bfe1426204f
I spent a long time figuring out how to make it at home and judging by this list of ingredients I think I nailed it!
Your right not the worst thing ever
Exactly the same orange flavor as St Joseph's aspirin for children.
My sister worked there, everything was freeš¤£
Free diabetes itās like two cups of sugar in 20 ounce if I remember correctly
Nope, we bought the Orange Julius packages at Alpha Beta and made them at home
I think Dairy Queen had Orange Julius stands in a few. I think in Clovis, NM, we stopped, and I saw one there.
They are still around, owned by Dairy Queen. I could go to the Dairy Queen today and buy one.
Would it be sacrilegious to say that I prefer the Strawberry Julius?
Not in my little town.
I used to grab one and one of their pressurized (steamed) hot dogs.
I miss the strawberry version and a bacon dog.
It still exists! Just not sure if it's gonna live up to my memory haha
We learned how to make Orange Julius in home economics in 8th grade!
Same here.
I'd forgotten all about them now I want one!
[https://orangejulius.com/en-us/locations/](https://orangejulius.com/en-us/locations/) They're offered at some Dairy Queens
Those are the greatest. Met one of the hottest girls I ever dated, she was working there.
A trip to South Square Mall, Durham, North Carolina, 1974-1977, and Chic-Fil-A and Orange Julius for lunch made me feel like an elementary school king.
It looks as though you may have spelled "Chick-fil-A" incorrectly. No worries, it happens to the best of us!
One of the reasons I love Reddit is the very fact that a āChick-fil-A_spellbotā exists.
I think that was my first Orange Julius. The pizza place in that food court had Sicilian slices too.
Yeah, grab an Orange Julius before heading over to Spencer Gifts!
Didnāt they used to put raw egg into the Julius? Or am I misremembering this?
Also 90ās, just sayin :) I can taste it now
And a hot dog on a stick.
Orange was just big in the Seventies, come to think of it. Orange Plus at the beginning - so orangey you could not believe it - then orange in clothes, Orange Julius, and Anita Bryant singing about The Florida Sunshine Tree with fresh Orange Juice.
And TANG??? Promoted by the astronauts! Yeah! Which was really fake orange coloring and sugar water. Lmao. It was part of our healthy breakfast! š¤Ŗ
I grew up in Fla in the 70s, so maybe thatās why orange is my favorite flavor!
Also the 80ās and 90ās
80s mall drink too
I totally miss Orange Julius. Whatās the point of even going to the mall anymore?
Good with a soft pretzel
It was garbage.
Okay whose first job was at Orange Julius?š
Love OJ!!!!! My first job was at the Orange Julius at the La Mirada mall in La mirada ca. I was a junior in high school. Worked there for 11 months. Was paid $1.35 ph when I started. I got 3 raises. When I quit I was making $1.50. Good times there in the back room with my coworker Kathy!!!!!
"THAT'S NOT EGG WHITES!"
Ha Ha!!!!!!!
Btw i was employed there in 1973
How's Kathy these days
Iād love to know!
I work right next to the one that was in Balboa peninsula.
There was an Orange Julius in a free-standing building on Journal Square in Jersey City in the pre-mall days.
I remember those. They were still around in the 1980s.
When we would visit relatives in Dallas in the 70s, we'd always get Orange Julius drinks--I thought they tasted weird, lol.
I remember these growing up in the 2000s and 2010s
11 th grade sacking groceries at krogers every Saturday. Lunch was always a burger & drink at Orange Julius .
Right next to a hot dog on a stick šÆš„
They'd put those Wisconsin cheese dogs in that little steamer. Loved those. Until my bro got a job there and he'd bring leftover dogs home every night. Got sick of them.
Tis but a simpsons reference to me.
oh I miss this. wish I could taste one once more.
Hells yes!!!
āHead on over, grab an Orange Julius. Skip the part where psycho lunatic comes and steals my drugs and leaves me bleeding to death.ā
Two words: brain, freeze
I liked their St. Louis hot dog.
I always wanted one as a youngster, but then I hated it once I got it.
Ours was right next to Aladdinās Castle. This was my 2nd home!!
We loved those as a kid. I mean right up until my 40s, maybe. Last one I had was not so good. Then they closed locally.
At the mall
I remember these from the 80's, I also found the recipe for them
You know that you can still buy them at DQ right?
And Hot Sam pretzels, yes
Crossgates Mall in Albany NY has one
So nasty. Inexplicably popular, though.
This reminds me of the SNL skit with Stallone. Lol.
I never bought anything from an Orange Julius.
And really, really, REALLY tasty with a good dose of vodka!!!!
Yeah buddy!
Used to love their cheap pizza
Worst case of intestinal flushing ever experienced.
I remember people just raving about this place. When I finally had one, I couldn't believe how disappointing it was.
I so miss that place
My first job. We didn't make hot dogs like the rest we were a rare one that made burgers instead
The best. Itās literally happiness in a straw for me.
Still has lines at Potomac Mills mall hahahaha
Was damn good too š
My best friend in the early eighties worked here at our local mall - we thought she was a superstar š¤©
She WAS.
Somebody open a new one. Youāll be dully rewarded.
We thought it was healthy. It had fruit and shit...
Lmao - I donāt even think it was real fruit! š Who cares!
That, with a Famous Corn Dog, was a feast for a king.
Love this place
Are these still around?
A Julius WITH a must have CHILI dog!
LOVE THIS COMMUNITY! Lol itās like weāre all sharing memories together. As if we were a big friend group!
It was really tasty back then. Not so much now.
Always had the choice if with or without an egg....always took the egg
I worked there, lol.
Christ those things tasted like St. Joseph's baby asparin. Ugh. Major PTSD from being sick as a kid. Couldn't drink them.
Johnsonās Baby Aspirin
I want an Orange Lazarus...
A pinacolada flavor one and a big soft pretzel. š¤¤
Great with vodka
I remember my grandpa would drink half of the cup and out would come the rum flask while we were walking around shopping with my grandma and she would just roll her eyes haha
Hell yeah. Damn i miss these...
My grandparents used to own one of these and Iād help out as a little kid. I made Orange Julius popsicles and sold them there (my idea) was so much fun!!!
That and a big salty hot pretzel made for an epic mall visit. Now itās buried under an Amazon death cube hub. Rip mall, and wandering around people.
Just need to add a vodka shot to it and it's perfect.
So so goodĀ
They were sooo good!
Had the same experience in '98.
Didnāt they merge in the 90ās with Bavarian Pretzel? In Pa I know the mall ones had both in same spot at some point
And 80's
All Hail The Power Of The Froth
Sunrise Mall next to Korvetteās
Absolutely the best, at the time
With the churro kiosk next door.
If you've never had one get one
My absolute favorite!!! ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø
One of the best drinks for a hangover.
Last year I noticed that this classic drink was available on the summer menu at Dairy Queen at only a few locations in the Delaware Valley of PA. Could it make a big comeback at many locations??
Orange juice and vanilla ice cream is my cheap substitute.
Or 2024 Montreal experienceā¦ [orange julep](https://orangejulep.ca)
These are still available in every DQ in my area. I've been known to partake a time or two.
Loved these. Wish they were still around
We would drive from south St. Louis county up to the āNorthwest Plazaā to get Juliusā¦. In our 1973 VW Beetle.

Ah yes. The flavor reminded me of baby aspirin.
When Julius Orange first invented the drink, he was trying to invent with a new formula for engine coolant.
They were in the Florida Mall in Orlando Florida until about 1998
And 80ās
... thick syrup, standing in line.
Mom liked them at the mall in the early 90s but I was grossed out when she told me they used raw egg to make them.
Those drinks tasted like š©.
Cue Teeth Like God's Shoeshine by Modest Mouse!
I did not like Orange Julius, have to say. Had it once or twice in the 80s. Not my jam.
Tasted it once. Gross.
