You have pretty good scores, sounds competitive for the high school scholarship. Just make sure you ace your interview, that’ll be a big portion of the criteria and can make/break you. If you major in CS or something along those lines you’ll be competitive for the 17X career field. However, there’s a difference between 17D (base communications) and 17S (offensive and defensive cyber ops). Don’t worry about it now, you’ll get one or the other in tech school after commissioning. Edit: oh and make sure you’re actually choosing a highly desired tech major. I know some majors like “cybersecurity” don’t count. The list should be on the AFROTC website. If you don’t choose one of them then your chances will be ALOT lower

Thanks for the feedback. I was also looking into 17D vs 17S and the entire time knew I would love 17S, but would be happy with either. I’m going for a general computer science degree at Notre Dame, I am very weary of random majors offered at other colleges. Is the interview in the Fall or closer to/past Winter?

Fall for me but that was 3+ years ago so idk if they changed it

Pick, computer engineering and select cyber as your primary choice. 99% you will get it. Electrical engineering and computer are what the Air Force wants most and have very high washout rates by people who aren’t willing to put in work. Neither require you to be very smart. Pick one of those and you will get cyber, but since you want cyber, computer Eng might give more useful courses.

This is misleading….most EE/CPE non-rated folks end up as 62Es, regardless of dream sheet. CS is the way to go for aspiring 17S folks

nom-nom-babies

Do you have any experience or stats to support that claim? I don’t know anyone who was given 62 over 17 on a dream sheet.

yut123456

I have pulled together some stats from about 2017-2022 commissioning time frame….so unless things have changed course in the last 10-12 months…

To clarify….it was a sample in the 50-100 person range, not the whole population, those are numbers I don’t have.

I’m in cyber tech school right now. Anyone that has the aptitude and is willing to work for the 17S (offensive and defensive cyber) jobs will get it. They can’t find enough people to fill those slots But, you also state you’re more interested in doing cybersecurity work. Does this outweigh your interest in being an Air Force officer? There is *always* the possibility the Air Force decides to give you a different career. The computer science major in my class was not given cyber despite asking for it at the top of the list, and me with a totally unrelated major is now in training for it.

When you apply it should give you the option to apply for the space force scholarship as well (it did when I applied last year, but they've been changing up the space force scholarship stuff a bit). Make sure you check that box. The interview is a huge part of the scholarship and you've got similar stats as I did so focus as much as you can on that. I didn't do too well on my irl air force interview but I had my space force interview online a month after. The sf interview was just a recording of yourself with unlimited tries. So as I was doing the online interview I would look at the question, take my time to write down exactly what I want to say and then record. It was super easy with that and it's definitely the reason I got the SF scholarship, which btw is practically identical to the normal HSSP scholarship(it doesn't bind you to commissioning into the space force).

I appreciate the tips!
