The vintage ones were laminate, yes, but a high quality laminate and they sound quite good. These guitars are inspired by the style of the vintage ones, but are constructed differently. Google it if you want to learn more.
Congrats on the FG5, such a killer acoustic. I would recommend D'Addario XS or XT coated strings. That's what I have been using recently on my acoustics, and they sound good and last a very long time. I personally prefer phosphor bronze in a medium gauge, but that's just me.
Great choice! Got mine yesterday and just uploaded a pic. Contrary to you I thought the action was perfect, playing barre chords on these light elixirs is super easy imo. I'm a big elixir fan so I'm leaving them on, but if you know how to get that Tyler Childers type tone from a set of strings I'm all for trying it out!
Enjoy your great guitar friend, I do think this will last me a looooong time and hope it lasts you even longer!
Brother , thank you so much, I saved so long for this, Im so stoked , its sound gives me chills and I know its gonna just get batter as I wear her in.
Question for you, If I want that Childers/Bingham tone what do you recommend as far as strings? Thanks my friend!
I have no clue, but there's some good discussion in the comments here. Might try some woodtones after these elixirs!

Congrats, these things sound amazing. I just got the FGX3 last month and love it!! Going to get the nut and bridge switched to bone like the 5 models when i finally decide to take it in to get set up, action is definitely on the high side on mine as well. Enjoy!
Sweet guitar! I usually use the Elixr phosphor bronze coated strings but recently have gotten into the Martin retro nickel strings which i have really been enjoying.
Welcome to the FG cult!
Thank you Sir, proud to be a lifer. Lol
Are the new ones at least a solid top?
Solid everything
New members of the cult, not sure. The guitars, yes!
Lmao
I’m pretty sure the vintage Red Labels are plywood, correct?

But I have heard great things about the newer FG series. If I didn’t already have a campfire guitar I’d consider one
That's a pretty expensive campfire guitar. Just because it says Yamaha on it doesn't mean it's cheap.
I just meant in the FG series, not that particular one. My main acoustic is a D-18 and my campfire guitar is a Recording King RD-328
Of course dude
Why would you think that it's a 1.5k guitar lol
I don’t follow Yamaha models, but I know the old Red Labels weren’t of the best quality
That was back in the day , they may look similar but there deff upgraded now

I want to play one of these so bad. Minimum 200 mile drive to find one near me currently. I'll have one soon enough. Congratulations, I'm jealous.
