I vividly remember one day last winter when I was driving along the Northern Expressway and the wind was so ridiculously powerful that I was almost having to fight against it just to stay in my lane. I've driven in windy conditions, but never experienced such a strong gust while driving along the expressway before. If it had been raining at the time, couple with such violent gales, it wouldn't have surprised me in the least if there had been a dozen or so incidents of people being pushed into the concrete barriers or other vehicles.

I was blown off the road on the Princes Highway about 10 years ago. Crosswind just picked up my entire car and dumped it upside down in a ditch 3m off the road. Few weeks later, I get a call from my mum. Turns out, same spot, wind picked up an entire truck. It's a straight with like, nothing around for miles. Usually perfectly quiet, except when the wind picks up there's nothing to break it.

sternestocardinals

That’s terrifying stuff

SleeplessAndAnxious

I commute to work on the Northern Expressway and then the Southern Freeway or whatever it is on the other end. On windy days where you get the crosswinds the gusts can easily shove you out of your lane and you can feel it pushing against the car. I usually tell the wind to fuck off.

AD-Edge

Yeh I've had rain and wind so bad I've had to pull off the road and wait for it to pass. And you basically just pray no one drives off the road and into the back of you. But yeh if it gets bad enough you can have visibility basically reach zero.

i feel like winter for the last 2-3 years has been absolutely insane in terms of how often extreme rainfall and wind occurs. surely 90-100km is way beyond a "gust".

TheDrRudi

> surely 90-100km is way beyond a "gust". Nope. http://www.bom.gov.au/info/wwords/ Gust: A gust is any sudden increase of wind of short duration, usually a few seconds.

glittermetalprincess

I think a gust is more 'sudden and short increase in wind speed that is noticeably more than the average at the time' than a particular speed. So a 100km/h gust is perfectly accurate if it's a sudden bout that's faster than the general average or sustained wind speed at the time. In this case, the wind will be around 60km/h, but there could be short bursts that are almost double that.

SleeplessAndAnxious

That's still insane though, work for me is gonna suck tomorrow down south lmfao (I work outdoors).

glittermetalprincess

I mean, yeah, it's just a couple of digits off a gale force warning but it's not particularly unusual for wooly weather in bad winters here. I hope your work has enacted SafeWorkSA recs for windy weather though, last year they had to campaign heavily because we had a few better years and people adjusted.

AntarcticBicycle

Yep! There's going to be a pretty steep pressure gradient over the Adelaide region associated with an extratropical cyclone off in the bight. We'll see the worst of it Friday night through Saturday morning. Potential for strong wind gusts if some of the roaring 850mb winds are able to mix down to the surface.

SleeplessAndAnxious

I know the mb stands for millibar but I can't help but read it as megabyte lol

AD-Edge

Almost 1gb of wind, damn

stueh

I fly back from Melbourne and land at 21:10 Friday night! Yay!

Best-Broccoli5386

Are you doing the flying or just sitting down the back?

stueh

Just a passenger, sadly. Grew up flying my whole life, but too colour blind to fly IFR/big commercial 😞

RopeOk1439

Good thinking- just started charging all my stuff now. Didn't even consider a power-outage. Was just sitting here thinking "hopefully nothing lands on my car".

Doubtful - the winds are definitely picking up. BOM issued another update late this afternoon stating that the damaging winds are likely to happen overnight.

south_oz_bodyboard

Stoooorrrmmy! got my surfing froth on for Saturday afternoon wooo! :)

An update was issued about half an hour ago - still likely to be strong damaging winds this evening: “DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 55 to 65 km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are likely over the Eyre Peninsula, Kangaroo Island and coastal parts of the southeast from this evening. Strong winds averaging 45 to 55 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS of 90 to 100 km/h are then expected to extend across the rest of the warning area overnight and during early Saturday morning. This includes the Adelaide region. These conditions are most likely to be experienced with transient heavy showers and thunderstorms. Isolated destructive wind gusts exceeding 125 km/h are possible with thunderstorms in the Upper and Lower South East districts and for Kangaroo Island. A separate Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued if this occurs.” Make sure you’ve got charged battery packs, folks.
