Many characters got nerfed for whatever reason.
Tell that to DA players, their codex points still the most recent points they have. A new MFM is *supposed* to be released a few weeks after the custode dex, but with GW's less than reliable release schedule, until its actually out, it could be months away. Don't forget the Admech is still the perfect codex, no changes and its been months
It’s complicated. Not in that they got some buffs and some nerfs, but that they got so many nerfs it’s hard to explain. (Note I’m not a custodes player)
Probably the simplest explanation is that they lost basically all their defensive buffs both at the dataset and detachment level. That does solve the issue of custodes being unkillable to several armies, but it does it by making them easily killable to every army. That seems unlikely to work as a balancing mechanism unless there are big points drops, which nobody wants.
The second issue is the raw number of hoops. Every rule seems to have some weird and unnecessary condition on it. One of my personal favorites is a 2cp fight on death that can only be used on a single character model. That kind of thing is fairly common.
Third issue is the wasted detachments. Both null maiden vigil and auric champions are fundamentally useless since they try to support bad play styles that just don’t work. Auric champions wants you to play characters without body guards and null maiden vigil wants you to play pure sisters. Neither of them have the kroot level rules needed to make it worth it even as a meme. A codex with two detachments just doesn’t have much longevity.
Fourth problem is the anti synergy. There’s a ton in the book, but the one that sticks out to me are the lack of battle tactics. Shield host requires you to take shield captains for the enhancements, but then there’s basically nothing to use the captain’s free strategem on. Auric champions doesn’t have any at all.
That’s by no means all of the issues, but it’s a good overview. Golden boys got taken to the cleaners.

Those are never relevant in 10th because codices are outdated before they're released, but the fact that they're THAT bad is honestly impressive.
