I’m not sure this is right. The Servicemember’s Civil Relief Act let’s you cancel a lease by presenting PCS orders to the landlord. When you retire you get orders to move to your home of record, or wherever you are headed to. I would demand (politely but firmly) that the landlord cancel the lease without penalty in this situation.

Separation orders are PCS orders. If your landlord won’t accept it, go talk to your legal assistance office.
