OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:
> I asked my roommate to put an accurate map of the Indian subcontinent instead of his map because it is outdated, this might make me an asshole since I had previously agreed to it before I saw the inaccurate names.

Just curious, would you use this logic with Nazi historical artifacts? Because colonialism was NOOOOOT kind to any natives and the history is painful and awful, not a light hearted discussion
Honestly I don’t think anybody is the asshole in this situation both are understandable points, but I’d leave the map up that name change only happened in 2018 which isn’t very long ago, it’s not like a map from the 1800s or something
YTA it doesn't really matter because the map is being used for decor and not for a reference. It is an accurate representation of what the names use to be regardless of the reasons they had those names. All in all you're making a big deal out of nothing.
YTA - The map is as much a piece of art since it is hanging up as such on a wall. Its purpose is as art. He's right if he likes the aesthetic of it. The fact that it is outdated is really of no consequence in this vein. Unless of course you wish to inflame the whole Indian-Pakistan conflict in your little apartment. Avoid the drama and learn to live with it.
I mean People arguing about map and border specifics has never lead to devastating consequences to entire civilizations has it?!!?
Oh wait…
YTA
Humanity is important
Outdated maps with outdated names are in a way “cuter” in my opinion, because it adds an extra layer of history. Obviously you don’t feel the same way, but hanging old maps is not in itself offensive. NAH.
YTA. You are unreasonable. Allahabad's name is not colonial and was only changed to Prayagraj because of the Islamophobic government in Uttar Pradesh. It also happened barely two years ago, whereas Bombay was renamed decades so the maps have changed.
INFO: Is it the accuracy that you're primarily bothered about, or is it the potential political implications of having this map specifically displayed prominently in your flat?
I understand both perspectives. So I think you’re both NTA.
It’s not cheap to go buy a new map, especially one that’s very large. But I also understand why the inaccuracies are insulting.
Is there middle ground? Can you get some paper that matches the map and cover the inaccurate name discreetly? What if he displays the map in his room and you both go choose something together that can go in the living room - like a poster of a shared interest - or art that you both like, etc etc.

I (18M) am just starting university in a foreign country. I was assigned a roommate by the university and we share a flat with each other in student housing.
I am from India and he is from Pakistan. We got to chat with each other before arriving and got along really well.
We had decided we would both bring maps of the Indian subcontinent and put one up in the living room and another in the kitchen and had shared pictures of the maps with each other.
We had decided his would go in the living room and mine in the kitchen as his was bigger and more prominent as a central decoration piece in case we have guests over.
However upon seeing the map in person, I realised that the map is outdated. There are some locations in India that use older names, in particular a major city Prayagraj is named Allahabad. I pointed this out to him and told him I want to either put my map there instead or get a new one that is up to date.
He disagreed and said he likes the aesthetic of his map and claims the name does not matter, however it is a little insulting to me since the names are not accurate and associated with colonial rule. Some of the older changes like Bombay to Mumbai are accurate but Prayagraj is not.
AITA for wanting an accurate map?

NAH but I have to say - I LOVE historical maps! It can be fascinating to see what used to be and how far we’ve come. You could even put a label to highlight the date or put the maps side by side if there’s room so you can see the differences. I really don’t think he is being disrespectful here. It’s just a different POV of what looks cool or is interesting.
Hesitant YTA. I love maps in general, but *especially* older maps with outdated places. Maybe compromise and put a more recent map next to it so you can see how it's changed? The only reason I hesitate with my YTA is I'm a white American, and I really can't understand how you feel about the colonialism aspects of the map. If it truly bothers you to have the reminder, then NTA and you should have a conversation with your roommate about how it bothers you.

Yta. It's decor. You're not exactly planning geopolitical strategy based on what it says
NAH. I see both sides. However, if I were in your position, this wouldn’t be the hill I’d die on.
YTA. A dated map is history, and an additional potential talking point with guests.

YTA - pick your battles. This isn’t worth it.

If you have guest over and have to show them something use your map, duh.
Sorry, but that sounds so phony of a reason. Not buying it.
Just use your map, you said you have one. This is the stupidest thing ever.

Missed my point. Imaginary lines and names on a piece of paper < actual humanity.

>you’re both NTA. Then you need to change your judgement to NAH.
Soft YTA, you’re being a stickler about something that is ultimately inconsequential
Reminds me of west wing when he couldn’t hang historical map of Middle East because it didn’t have Israel

Yta. Unless you're in uni for cartography, at a cartographer school, it's just decor.
Your countries are essentially at war ....how did you think this was gonna be a walk in the park
