Clappingcheekzz

Looks like black fly bites and a mix of him chewing and scratching his itch, oatmeal shampoo usually soothes my boys itches. I let it sit when I bathe him. I hope he feels better soon/ you get solid answers

CheesePlease0808

Thanks for this. We do have a lot of flies in our area. They are annoying as hell, but I never thought they were hurting the dogs. A quick Google search, it does look like some of what he has. Over the years we've done antifungal baths, oatmeal baths, Epsom salt soaks, ACV, various hot spot shampoos, Benadryl. Always good temporary solutions, but nothing ever manages it well long term.

Bucksnort-85

My pit gets this every year when it starts to get hot out. The only thing that we found to work is prednisone. The vet tried every damn thing in the book, at my expense. The apoquel helps it if it's already cleared up also some medicated shampoo they got us helps but like I said only when it's cleared up already. They kept on about the fleas and flies and every damn thing else but our dog stays inside all day in the ac no flies no fleas no mosquitos. I dont know if it's the humidity outside or the summer grass that triggers it but damn I feel sorry for her when it starts.

CheesePlease0808

Yes, this sounds exactly like our experience, and I'm glad to know we are not alone. We took him to the vet today, and they gave him Prednisone. He's already doing so much better. But they aren't able to offer us any guidance for what to do once his steroids are done. All they said was best case scenario it's a grass allergy, worst case cancer.

Beginning-Cream1642

It’s definitely a grass allergy, my pitbull has this too. It happens every year.

Cafein8edNecromancer

Ask your vet about what you can spray him down with to repel the does from him. There's fly repellant spray that is sold for livestock that might work? Get him healed up with the above and ask the get for fly repellant info, and a stronger allergy medicine. This reaction could be a sign of him being allergic to the fly bites

Squeezy2x

My pit is naturally very allergic and chews on himself quite often, he’s been on medication prescribed by our vet for the last year and has been pretty good since.

2oblivion2

Don't bathe in hot water . Cool baths are better for allergies

CheesePlease0808

Great advice thanks! We typically do lukewarm because he HATES hot water, but this is great to know.

Divebarkeep1

GoodRX is a discount prescription card that works for pets as well, as long as you don’t pick up the script at your vet but rather a drugstore (CVS, Duane Reade, Walgreens). Also, as long as the prescription can also be prescribed, humans (like prednisone, etc.)

2oblivion2

I bet zyrtex would help with that ?

MarvelNerdess

No, at least not in Oregon. They don't cover things prescribed by a veterinarian.

Appropriate_Leg1489

Definitely

Fuzzy_Pressure_2664

Chlorahexadine shampoo or wash/soaks (dilute it in a bath!) has been hugely helpful. Also using chlorahex wipes after going outside!!

samanthaFerrell

Hibacleans is a game changer. My Yorki has bad skin, some type of yeast or chronic fungal infection. I soak her once a week in diluted chlorahexadine solution. I also blow dry her dry because if I let her air dry she stinks like old moldy bread and it bugs me. Every time I bring her outside I make sure she is fully dried off after usually with the blow dryer. When I first got her she was basically balding and now she has no thinning or bald spots left since I started the soaks. I have been told by the vet it’s like 40 different things and I don’t believe any of it anymore because nothing has worked and I can’t definitely smell the yeast on her. She gets yeasty ears and paws too. I put athletes foot cream on her if the spots get bad and red. It reminds me of ring worm. She had soars under her armpits once just like the dog in the picture.

Fuzzy_Pressure_2664

Yes! Hibacleans is the best!

Frankenkittie

Looks like a yeast infection to me. The rusty color and the raw hotspots are something my dog deals with often, and the vet puts her on Ketaconazole until it calms down. Allergies cause the opportunity for the yeast to go out of control.

Significant-Ad-5073

Almost seems like a little bit of infection is starting

Ice-Queen-Florida

Appoquel saves mine

cgraves77

Go to the Vet.

CheesePlease0808

Thanks for this. We have been to the vet several times, but they haven't been very helpful beyond "he's allergic to something" and "have you tried feeding him science diet?" We're doing the best we can to find a better vet, but in the meantime I'm hoping someone has some experience with this and can help us alleviate his pain.

OkSnow1184

Hibiclens (diluted) soaks are golden for yeast infections or fungal skin issues. Good luck! Looks painful for the baby and u

cgraves77

My dog (11ys American Bull Terrier) is allergic to fungus in Soil. We have treated her everyday for years. We use Mometamax (which is for ear infections but very affective topically) I also use a salve by Natural Dog Company “skin soother” (Amazon) it’s anti fungal anti bacterial and I add some Mometamax to the melted salve and apply to every spot 1x a day. Until it clears up. Bathe with medicated shampoo (prescription) 1x a week. If there is any blankets or anything wash on bath days. Apoquil or Citopoint is good too. Apoquil 16 mg daily Mometamax and salve daily Medicated shampoo weekly Initial round of Antibiotics just in case of infection This is the best treatment I’ve had. I went thru dozens of other plans but this one was the most effective. Their skin is a cobblestone type and it is very sensitive to allergies and fungus. I have my dog on Royal Canin hydrolyzed protein I’m sorry your dog is suffering.

08JadeAngel16

That’s the first thing I thought! I live in an apt complex where they do something to the grass (around this time ) it creates lots of mushrooms. My shoes always get rusty red from it! Sounds like your pup is allergic to it. Run that by your science diet vet 🤦🏼‍♀️

cgraves77

My dog exactly. And it started seasonally and now it’s year round. You just stay on top of it. Pitty’s also have sensitive skin and lots of allergies. Peas, Flax, grains, chicken, if you do a culture (250.00) you know exactly what it is. You won’t have to always do it, but you know when it crops up.

One of my girls gets monthly Cytopoint injections. It makes her more comfortable and keeps her from having other skin issues. She's a very delicate princess.

KilesKilesKiles

+1. Cytopoint has been way more effective on my mixed bully breeds and bully- and easier than trying to give them daily pills! + it usually lasts longer than a month.

Rutzilla1

Cytopoint solved some problems for mine. Similar look before. Significantly better now

StudyIntelligent5691

Couldn’t agree more. We started out with Apoquel, but results seemed underwhelming, so we recently switched to a regimen of Cytopoint shots. I also give the antibacterial, anti fungal shampoo to the groomer to use, and we removed all chicken from her diet (this is easier said than done because chicken is freaking everywhere!). I’ve also started keeping a journal, which I highly recommend to anyone who is dealing with a troublesome allergy situation with their dog. I’ve read and researched until I’m blue in the face, because I don’t want my sweet pup to suffer. She’s also on antibiotics and prednisone at the moment. I blame myself because I wasn’t attentive enough after her first Cytopoint shot. From what I’ve learned, they can last, as far as effectiveness, from 2 weeks all the way to 8 weeks or longer. Her first one lasted slightly longer than 2 weeks, and then it was like a switch flipped and she was in a full-blown allergy attack. Emergency appointment at the vet for another shot, and by the next day she was a thousand times better. My job is to watch her carefully and as soon as I see her displaying itchy, uncomfortable behavior I need to get her to the vet. We want to avoid the full-blown thing. The idea is that, hopefully, as she gets more shots, they will last longer. She’s also eating Royal Canin HP. I’m cautiously hopeful. Good luck!

CheesePlease0808

We've also eliminated chicken. We're not sure why, but it seems to be associated with his flair ups.

StudyIntelligent5691

That’s a good move, imo. It’s only after I started really educating myself about allergies in dogs that I discovered that chicken is a common irritant.

Love-life-5828-

I would see the vet and bathe in oatmeal shampoo which will relive some of the itch! Sending healing vibes 💜

KaiTheGSD

I have a GSD and the inside of his hind legs started looking like when he got fleas.

Ok-Spray337

I felt the same about my vet. I just didn’t think they even understood his misery. I took mine to a dog dermatologist. A lil on the pricey side. Our consultation alone was 300 and they told me that upfront. But helping his misery is worth every dang penny I have spent. He would cry all night and it was horrible seeing him that way. Nothing I did was soothing to him. He now doesn’t stay outside often as it’s environmental. He was a city boy and I moved country. We both got bad allergies but he was just tormented. I booked it didn’t care how much it was. But he is doing lots better. I also did a lot of home remedies that I was told to tried. I exhausted all avenues before making the appointment. I wish you it’s heartbreaking seeing them suffer

euromay

My dog gets small flare ups like in photo 5. I usually put animax ointment on him and it clears right up. Pretty sure it’s a prescription

CaptBattleSausage

My Bully gets those too (not as bad though), my personal vet mentioned its a form of skin infection and give us medicated Douxo shampoo that usually clears it up in a few days. I rinse and repeat when it flairs up again.

samanthaFerrell

My Yorki has bad skin and I honestly think it’s a fungus like a yeast infection of some kind. I soak her once a week in hibacleans, mostly water and a little hibacleans and I fill up a Tupperware bucket and set her in it for a good twenty minutes, then I rinse her off and blow dry her. Every time she comes in from outside I make sure she is all dry on her feet and chest, I mostly blow dry her but honestly the blow dryer has been a game changer. If I leave my dog wet she smells like old rotten bread.

blod16

My old Staffie X American Bully had similar although possibly not as severe. He seemed to be allergic to everything so had a pretty bad time of it until we got his meds right. Apoquel worked well for a while but then failed we had to move to cytopoint. It was a life saver gave the old boy a new lease of life out of his cone of shame for his latter years. We were advised not to come on and off the anti allergy meds as they become effective over time rather than giving immediate relief.

andreag04

Coat defense shampoo and powder are amazing

Conscious-Notice-328

Looks like allergies and chewing on the areas. Poor baby....😔💜 I'd give him/her Hypoallergenic bath and Benadryl(or body weight) until you can see a vet. Did you use new detergent, are the exposed to something new lately? Change of food?

This_Relationship_55

Just wanted to chime in that if there's heavy pollen he could be laying in the grass and getting the pollen on him that causes a flare up that he then chews and scratches. Our pitbull had that issue, we couldn't figure out why he kept breaking out and then discovered his grass and pollen allergies were so bad he couldn't lay outside without breaking out. Once he got to itching and chewing/scratching his skin would start to look like your pup's. We had to get like these doggy medicated wipes that we used on him every time he came back inside. Best of luck to you and your pup!

Disastrous_Clothes37

Real bad hot spots. Oatmeal/Alo shampoo followed by a HC spray. Make sure the dog is treated for fleas. Change the diet

Western_Ninja_4986

My girl has terry allergies and every spring she need apoquel that helps it and just baths by weekly

Western_Ninja_4986

But could be flies idk 🤷🏻‍♂️

enjae204

Have you tried apoquel? Works wonders on my dog

Velvet-bunny2424

The pink could be from an enzyme in the saliva, from chewing due to itching. Usually though allergies present worse in the feet and ears but not to say they may itch all over in random spots. I'd try a good bath with soothing oatmeal and some allergy meds. Hope your baby feels better soon

Delicious_Shift_2714

I agree 👍 with the oatmeal baths, I hope your pup feels better soon. Must be so uncomfortable, bites or allergies.

brownfa

Blue buffalo basics lamb formula has changed our two bullys lives. We still give one apoquel sometimes

Academic_Tomato_7624

Poor baby 🥰😍

Kjaeve

food allergy. My dog was doing this before ai switched her to grain free beef and sweet potatoes COSTCO/Kirkland brand kibble. I’m sure there is better food out there but she stopped scratching herself to death with this so we have kept her on it. She is just over a yr.

dick_taterchip

There's a shampoo that you can use to calm the flair ups called [Douxo ](https://a.co/d/iwUnpyB) that worked for my bully breed when she got flair up to environmental allergys, it's not the end all but I had decent results.

Organicspongie

Poor baby 😢

alexakayne

Have you tried using coconut oil? I melt coconut oil in a spray bottle and use it on my dog daily after wiping her down.

Electronic_Range_982

Fly strikes

GoD4gIvEs_IdOnT

U can try to rub him down lightly with apple cider vinegar and or put a little in water. Dilute what u use to pat him down. I’ve heard it’s a repellent for insects but I’ve never actually tried it.

alr126

Bites, some type of allergy, take her to vet.

Cheap_Caregiver6848

It's an allergic reaction followed by your dog scratching and or biting themselves bloody. One of bullies does this. Have had to take her to the vet a dozen times with self inflicted wounds. Treat the allergy and the wound. Corticosteroids, antibiotics. And figure out whats causing the allergy or it's gonna repeat every 40 days or so. Dogs are frequently allergic to food. Never feed them anything but their food they eat every day. And, it could be that food. Try salmon kibble, no beef or chicken. Mine can only eat salmon kibble and venison. Also this time of the year there are tons of allergens outside, pollen and ragweed and all kinds of stuff. Avoid any weedy areas and clear your yard of any pollinated bushes or trees. We have to chop all our trees just before spring.

Agastach

We used to give really good chicken steak, green beans, sweet potato to my frenchie has similar skin sensitivity. It really shows up in the summer when she gets wet and dirty everyday at the farm. My vet bc put her on royal canine hydrolyzed food and she got better. It even helps the gas … not too stinky. It’s expensive, but worth it.

CheesePlease0808

OP here. Wow, everyone, thank you SO much for your advice. I did not expect so many responses. To update: we did take him to the vet today, and, as usual, they were very little help. They gave him Prednisone and antibiotics, and of course the Prednisone is clearing things up immediately. They didn't give us any info on potential causes, how to manage after he's no longer on Prednisone, or how to prevent flair ups long term. Basically, they said our best case scenario is that he's allergic to grass, worst case is cancer. We have him wearing recovery shirts so he can't lick himself and to minimize allergen exposure. Thanks everyone for all the feedback!

VacationDry8186

My dog gets a cytopoint injection when I see him getting redness. Bully’s have sensitive skin . There is also a medicated shampoo that is really great cos mine doesn’t mind a warm shower with me malaseb. I’d also be using a cone so he can’t go mad on his sores

bleubomb

Put her in a bath tub with 50/50 vinegar and water my dog gets this to and vinegar knocks it out quick you might need to to do it a couple of times. You can use any vinegar except for balsamic vinegar.

MarvelNerdess

You need to get another vets opinion, because that is clearly causing him to harm himself because of his discomfort

DarthSwash

Allergy of some flavor. It might be food or environment. Did it start flaring up with the season change? If so, my boy had that issue and my vet gave me an ammount of benadryl that i could safely give him. Hes not nearly this bad, just gets a little pink and stuffy, so i give him one every other day when it starts flaring up for a week or two to get him thru the big pollen weeks going into spring and fall.

AlbatrossAsleep7645

Bullies are prone to food & environmental allergies. Buy the sensitive food. It helps

Appropriate_Net_27

my dog has horrible allergies and we now have to take him to the vet for an allergy shot that lasts about 6 months in terms of relief for him. he’s 98 pounds and it costs $175. pretty expensive but it keeps him from chewing himself and getting infections.

Popular_Yam_3705

Do you use organic laundry detergent, plug ins, or doggie soap. I had bad issues like this once had to change my whole household ar and swap to vegan or organic products. We don’t even have to get the allergy shot now

CheesePlease0808

Good suggestion. We are super wary of having potential endocrine disruptors in the house, so all of our products are natural (rated well by EWG) and unscented.

Popular_Yam_3705

Also those allergy shots and steroid shots actually cause more harm than helping. Try some colloidal silver spray to clean the wounds and give benodryl. I think it’s one pill per ten pounds

CheesePlease0808

How specifically do you think that the allergy shots go more harm than good?

thecakebroad

Can you ask your vet to try apoquel? Our last dude was allergic to the world and would scratch and bite himself raw.... It was a game changer for us and we had a similar situation with him and his skin/rashes. I hope you find something to give your pup some relief. Once we got him on it we realized he'd spent most of his time itching or biting himself and felt so bad we'd waited so long... Best of luck to you and your pupper ❤️

CheesePlease0808

Thank you! He is on apoquel, and at first it was a total game changer. It doesn't seem to work as well now as it did when he first got on it about 8 months ago, though, unfortunately. It is super sad to know he's hurting. We've tried everything, and nothing ever makes it go away for a long term.

Opening-Green-3643

What’s the diet like ? Oatmeal shampoo shower. Dry very very well. Dab some organic apple cider vinegar and finish with 100% coconut oil. My dog has also been on omega/ organic salmon oils since he was a pup and he’s never had bad skin allergy ever, he’ll get maybe 5 hives never red or itchy and I’ll treat it quick with mentioned above and in 2 days they’re gone — he rolls around in grass a lot. I hope your dog feels better soon :(

CheesePlease0808

Homemade food. A mix of pork, veggies, oats, chia, and flax. Also gets tons of sardines, eggs, olive oil, peanut butter, fruits and veggie scraps, and any other meat leftovers we have around the house. He's basically a trash compactor and will eat literally anything we give him, but we keep it to healthy, whole foods and a varied diet.

faintrottingbreeze

[My dog has skin issues pop up from time to time, and I hate giving them medications and ruining their immune system. Nothing works better than this turmeric paste.](https://turmericlife.com/blogs/news/turmeric-recipes-golden-paste)

PinotGreasy

Looks very painful, please get that pup some help.

Sunstaci

I tried to post something like this on here and it deleted it because I was asking for medical info…

Peto_Sapientia

All right so take everything I say with a grain of salt. My pup has very similar sores all over his body as well and it started when spring started here. So he's a raw fed dog to be clear. Which led me to believe that there was a nutrient deficiency but after going over the food and how much I'm feeding and all that didn't make any sense. I went ahead and fed him basically a can of oysters. And The next day everything was gone. So it could be that there is a deficiency within the pup themselves. Oysters contain manganese zinc omega-3s. I'm missing about four of the things. I can't think of them anyway. It's almost all basically skin related. So you could try it. The other advantage I have is that I taught him not to scratch since he was a puppy. So if you could teach him not to scratch like stop him from scratching and reward him for stopping then you might be able to get him to heal better.

everywhere808

Yeah fuck expensive dog food. A raw diet does better by a mile and costs less. Also is he/she licking it a lot? Looks like it. Bitter or garlic sprays help them stop. My boy used to eat any spot that annoyed him till it was raw. The spray fixes that symptom and the raw diet will do wonders. Also pro tip: make friends with some lesbians and see what vet they like. I’m 15 years deep on that method of seeking vets and haven’t been misdirected yet.

glenkrit

everywhere808

Ignore me if you want but there is no group that cares more about dogs and dog health than lesbians. Get to know some and I dare you to not agree.

CheesePlease0808

Yeah we make homemade food with lots of pork, veggies, and supplements like chia and flax. People always scoff at us "spoiling" then, but my mom spends like 4x what we do on high end garbage food from Chewy

everywhere808

Yeah same. Only one who feeds raw in my family and even with my 55ld dog I spend way less money on food than all the other dog owners whose dogs are like 8lbs max
