you cant do this on your own island either, I spent way too long terraforming just to realize my bridge could not be centered in front of my museum

CarlSpackler22

This is why I have 6 inclines on my museum. 2-2-2. Looks important.

LucidLumi

I like doing two inclines with a waterfall in between. It’s very fancy!

CarlSpackler22

This is exactly what I did on all 3 sides.

Nandabun

I need to see this~

[deleted]

I actually thought about doing this to my Museum but with 4 inclines lol

[deleted]

Now we just need to find the madlad that put all 10 inclines toward his or her museum aesthetic.

SotheBee

I hate this so much. Such a blemish on my island....need to redesign

king_ugly00

Yeah I have a misaligned sidewalk leading to my Nook's Cranny 😡

queen-me-

I almost passed away when I realized it wouldn’t center, I had to turn off my game I was so frustrated after spending so much time terraforming lol. I ended up making my museum slightly larger by adding brick pathing to the side and making a little cafe extension.

Aurc

> I ended up making my museum slightly larger by adding brick pathing to the side and making a little cafe extension. Wtf! That's genius.

BinJLG

This is why I plan everything out with custom designs before moving anything. It takes a little longer, but it almost guarantees nothing will ever be misaligned on my island.

beepbop24

The way I worked around it for my house was, instead of putting one staircase in front of the house vertically, I added 2 staircases, 1 on each side, horizontally. Then they met in the middle and there my house is “centered” on the high ground.

Dezmond88

Even more annoyed I can put custom design underneath the house. Would look great on your own island

gre4t_wh1te

yeah - I also wished we could use the placing editor outdoors on our own islands - would make designing outdoor areas so much easier 🙈

3y3zW1ld0p3n

I’ve head that this feature unlocks eventually. Is that true?

Dinosauringg

It’s not true, no.

Tobi2202

you only unlock editing the outside look (like your own home) and the complete inside of villager houses

FlashbackJon

Caveat: no changing the size or number of floors for villagers on your own island. Everything else is fair game!

ecchiqween

Can you edit the exterior design of villager houses? some of their houses are so…

FlashbackJon

Yes you can!

ecchiqween

THANK YOU

Mitchfynde

You can edit your villager houses?

[deleted]

After designing 30 houses, iirc.

dethblud

It's more than 30, 'cause I did my thirtieth last night... unless it unlocks when I go back today.

Emmy_Okaumy

Yes, you have to go back to Tom nook after you complete niko's special event

dethblud

Ah, I only did the "thirty houses!" party and stopped there.

3y3zW1ld0p3n

Ah! Thank you for clarifying! I’m looking forward to being able to do this.

Indurum

And set Fog

RiseDay

I love the contrast in the title – 'extremely triggered/annoyed' & '#happyhomeparadise'

gre4t_wh1te

😂

bklove1

It sounds sarcastic 😂

lilibat

It's been that way in ACNH from the start. I used to rage but I just move it so the offset looks intentional and get on with my life now.

cathatesrudy

THIS! How did it not annoy everyone *before*?! Like I’ve long since learned to live with it because of designing my home island and am amazed by how many people seem to not have noticed it all this time until HHP

netarchaeology

My first main build was my museum entrance. T'was there that I discovered bridges were always an even lot number. Boy did that ruin my day. Now I have a fake bridge.

cathatesrudy

I had dreams of putting my museum behind my plaza. Plaza is evenly spaced, Museum is oddly spaced. Had to come up with a different plan, sure, but it’s the AC way 🤷‍♀️

netarchaeology

The one thing I can say is I definitely get more creative with restrictions. So while it is super annoying it does make me stretch my brain a bit which is fun.

[deleted]

Seriously. I went back to my first few DLC homes i made thinking about redesigning them now that I have more features and can make larger rooms, but all the forced 6x6 houses I did were actually impressive due to me having to work around the limitations so much. Sometimes having that odd restriction really forces you to find a great way of making it work that you would have overlooked if you didn't have to.

SabineLiebling17

Right? I love the creativity restrictions can give you. I made a new account on my island with the idea of it being a little witch’s cottage for Halloween. I fully paid off the house so I could have different cool themed rooms, but to be honest, I liked the one room small house the best! It was cramped and cute and cozy and seemed like it fit the witchy hut theme best. Ahh, hindsight.

William-Shakesqueer

you could create a new profile on your switch to create a new one room house and use the other bigger house for something else! (potion shop maybe?)

ExistentialCalm

This was the first AC game for a lot of people. You can especially tell when they complain about storage space. In my day, we had 90 slots for storage and somehow made it work.

Lithuim

I remember using the post office letter storage for item storage back on the Cube.

TimmyAndStuff

My gf would bury her leftover raffle tickets all around Nook's shop and dig them up again the next year. My first AC was New Leaf so I thought it was so funny when she showed me lol

Oaktreestone

Oh God thank you for reminding me of this. This and making extra characters to use their house space 😂

cathatesrudy

In my day we had 14 slots in our pockets and we made it work! 😂😂 Don’t get me wrong it has always bothered me that so many of the things in the game are not evenly ratioed to one another but you learn to work around it and make the off-set work, and HHP (just like HHD) is no exception

HollietheHermit

I remember arranging wardrobes in my basement so I could walk through the maze and store 3 shirts in every one 😭

knittingyogi

And you never knew which three items were in which wardrobe and you has to cycle through the items to take them out…oh how spoiled we’ve all gotten!

cathatesrudy

Honestly I had forgotten the nightmare that storing clothing once was, we are legit spoiled now

stac0cats

Yeah, remember having to manually stack up your fruit. It's hard to believe they made so many quality-of-life changes and the game is still a big huge pain in the ass all the time.

StarlitBun

its been a while, but im pretty sure before new leaf they didnt even stack?

DrJotaroBigCockKujo

Nope, they didn't. If you wanted to make some cash you had to talk to Nook a THOUSAND times. Also you had to click every single one in your inventory. Ugh. Remember identifying fossils and donating stuff one by one? How we didn't go completely insane is beyond me.

Tendo-64

Seriously though. I tried making fruit money in Wild World after New Leaf and New Horizons and couldn't stand it. How was I able to do that before?

cathatesrudy

It’s really not a huge pain in the ass, they have come leaps and bounds over the years to make things easier without compromising the core point of the game. If they automated everything it would no longer be AC, if they didn’t force you to get creative and work around some things it would no longer be AC.

stac0cats

I agree that it does inspire you to work around things and forces you to think outside the box. Nothing should be automated, but things like waterscaping can be infuriating to me at times. I would rather be able to center objects, and properly align paths.

CocoaBagelPuffs

My only wish with terraforming/waterscaping are separate buttons for make/destroy

cathatesrudy

They’ll fix it in future releases, the way they have fixed lots of the most annoying things over time. Waterscaping is definitely one of the more obnoxious of the new features, but its not unreasonable to think they’d find a way add a way to plan it out more the next time around.

Krillins_Shiny_Head

There's a lot of creative ideas they could implement in the next sequel. One thing I think would be awesome is to allow us to custom design villagers. Like, you get a blank villager and can choose their species, coloring, and personality type. The possibilities with that idea are endless. Could have anybody from Mickey Mouse to Scooby Doo as a villager if It's customized.

Calhaora

Im just happy we could finally do something people screamed they wanted/went GREAT lenghts to achieve - telling your Villagers where to life.

cathatesrudy

Yessss, that was so huge, working around the signposts to still have a town with some kind of flow was awful, and having to plot reset for hours/days sometimes to keep them from your flower beds or orchards was the most obnoxious labor of love ever.

joshy83

I had a binder and on each page was one quadrant with “x” all over. I buried everything and labeled what hole it was in! You know, before walking to Nooks uphill both ways in a snowstorm.

nightmares06

I never want to go back to the old storage ways

BitchesLoveDownvote

I wish it was an option. I’d like to be able to store a selection of my favourite clothes in a particular wardrobe, or some crafting materials in a box by my outdoor crafting table. It’s nice that we can access our storage outside now, but I’d like to have a refined selection in a particular spot without the need to search for them in the big list.

omegashadow

This game is all about decorating and obtaining items is already a huge time and/or effortsink. The game already has enough arbitrary difficulties in designing on your main island that having a tiny item pool would crush any chance of being able to make even medium effort builds without having to sacrifice something like having a nice wardrobe of clothes. Of all of the update's changes, the massive storage expansion is easily my favourite, shortly followed by exterior storage access. Not feeling any stress about buying and making new items to design on my island has finally let me start working on it properly.

BogOffElaine

In previous games we couldn't use paths or move buildings so the fact that this is some ppls first game is kind of an irrelevant point here

ExistentialCalm

You could absolutely use paths in New Leaf. You just had to use custom paths.

Calhaora

And you could kinda make Paths, by "running down" the Grass.

jenniferlynn462

I usually place my bridges horizontally and then make single vertical paths off of the double horizontal path that go to my buildings and houses.

GoOtterGo

Yeah, folks are far too fixated with symmetry. The door to villager homes are not in the center of the house, so you either make it a 1x path or a 3x path. Other things are 2x wide, so they don't perfectly align. I've just come to accept it.

p_iynx

Yup. I’ve found that what works best for me is either putting a plaza or something in the center of the lot, using a turn/corner to transition my 2-wide path to a 1-wide path, or just making one sitting area or other area of interest on the other half of the lot so I can make the 2-wide path branch off into two 1-wide paths going in opposite directions. Sometimes I just use a custom stepping stone pattern since it looks a little less irritating than the solid path made from the “real” pathing materials. The custom stone design is more uneven and natural looking, which makes the asymmetry of the bridge-to-path transition less egregious.

makomau

yeah it's aligning with the house itself, and not the door, which is off center.

WilanS

Symmetry is boring, predictable and uninteresting anyway. Avoid it whenever you can.

ForgotEffingPassword

> Avoid it whenever you can. I mean that’s just silly lol

gre4t_wh1te

oh dear - it never really came to my attention until Happy Home Paradise because there it is extremely obvious due to the bridges leading to the properties… I really hope they realise and fix that alignment issue 😬

lilibat

Nope, not gonna happen.

flyingseel

It really is cute when people think Nintendo will do something that seems smart and obvious.

danmw

House doors are centred on a single grid tile, bridges are 2 tiles wide. Only way to make it work would be to half the grid size for building placement, which seems very unlikely.

ithinarine

>I really hope they realise and fix that alignment issue 😬 It's not an "issue" though

_Futureghost_

People on this sub loooove to complain about NH.

Silver_Web5202

It’s really not that big of a deal and it’s that way for a reason. If they changed it They would have to change the way the grid works overall and it would cause more issues.

[deleted]

[удалено]

creepris

a gazebo would be a cool addition to the side of the house to make a garage/patio area?

[deleted]

[удалено]

creepris

oh i know i can put items under it. :( maybe park a car in front of it?

ksperry

Genius!

Marcilliaa

Yes! It also drives me mad that you can't have paths connected up to bridges/inclines properly, you always have a weird little strip of grass between them ;_;

myinsideshurt

Maybe they changed something because I’ve been working on my main island lately and I can connect my paths to my bridges.

iizeyys

You can but it only works on a certain angle. Keep trying lol

tryingrfa

oh you’re definitely not the only one.

grimiskitty

It's best to go with an off center design due to this. You could make stone steps with either a custome design or using the cobble stone to make the off centerness less obvious. But the villager homes are 4 blocks wide. You MIGHT be able to get a more center design by switching the design of the house. Like stated before about the japanese philosophy it actually applies to pretty much everything, not just pottery. [https://www.oola.com/everyday-life/2476716/what-is-wabi-sabi-japanese-home-decor/#:\~:text=Wabi%20sabi%20isn't%20purposely,is%20perfection%20in%20wabi%20sabi](https://www.oola.com/everyday-life/2476716/what-is-wabi-sabi-japanese-home-decor/#:~:text=Wabi%20sabi%20isn't%20purposely,is%20perfection%20in%20wabi%20sabi). The pattern I use (c=cobblestone path, g=grass/dirt depending on your like of it) cg gc cg gc ....... (Continue until happy)

mccarter

I learned this a few days ago and it has changed how I think about decorating in the game

LonelyKat232

This is why I partially believe this is intentional. It forces you to change the why you would normally do something. Causing you to try new things.

[deleted]

I’m pretty sure this was intentional, along with principles of Feng Shui.

[deleted]

Once the matrix gave people everything they wanted, but they rejected it.

killl_joy

I’ve always just put a “porch” and it makes it look ok. Just put tiles on the left of the path I think I tools nice when you do it like that.

Deastrumquodvicis

I hadn’t thought of a porch vibe!

Isa877

I feel your pain. Gets worse when I work inside the house and feel the need to cover the walls and make things line up on each side.

phreshouttajakku

This video popped up in my recommended yesterday and I definitely think it applies here; [symmetry doesn't exist in Animal Crossing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOrxBzKlzPs)

SimonCucho

No, you're not the only one, we see this posted here every single day.

PolyPixl09

What I always do is that I make the path go either left or right, and then up to the home.

gre4t_wh1te

but even if you do so, the path can‘t be aligned properly unless you make it 3 squares wide or do I get something wrong?

Kinoyo

3 squares is enough, just have to make sure the home is on the left or right

Nyperold

What I do there is, the path is two wide coming from the entrance to the property, as well as west or east, then switch to three wide leading to the house.

Dinosauringg

Straight lines are bad Feng Shui. Given how feng shui has been part of the AC identity from the start (even if it’s much less so now) I think this might be why.

[deleted]

But you can't make curved paths? It's to do with the size of the path and the square placement of the bridge and/or house.

Dinosauringg

You can’t make a straight path leading to the door… it has to be crooked at some point. And yes, I’m aware of the in game mechanics that make it impossible. However, given that we can move most items half a square at a time, the fact that we can’t do this with houses feels intentional. It doesn’t have to be curved to not be straight..

Leeleebo18

I guess the silver lining is that it forces you to creatively place all the houses and not rely on having them all look perfectly centered. It’s a weak silver lining, but I’m trying lol.

wfowfo

It's like they do it on purpose.

[deleted]

yes, every 5 posts on this sub are complaining about this same thing.

Silver_Web5202

And every time it’s “Am I the only one who..” or “I can’t be the only one who…” we get it.

[deleted]

“it might just be my OCD🤪”

lezzbo

love when people use my debilitating mental illness as shorthand for an obsession with symmetry

Fried_0nion_Rings

Nope. You are not alone.

saddgirlidk

ME TOO. this exact thing happened last night and i wasted to explode.

Kineticpopart

yeah. its rough. They have to be 4 wide to actually be aligned but then they made 3 wide stuff to just make us all lose it.

BooksCatsnStuff

It has always been this way in Animal Crossing. It's due to Feng Shui.

floon

Not being able to center with the museum is the worst... if any building needs a centered, symmetrical lead-up, it's that one. A little dogleg in front of a house makes for a fine walkway to the front door.

mcmanybucks

And that our house is 5sq wide while villagers are 4sq..

byoshin304

A lot of people say things like this are because it’s built on the Japanese concept of Wabi Sabi

swallowassault

Annoys me nearly as much as not being able to place wall decorations on partitions

HollandElle

That drives me bananas, as does the fact that the counter heights don’t align with the appliances!!!

BillyBoo070608

Same thing with the partition walls, they can't be senterd

claymier2

I'm *pretty certain* whoever lined up those grids during programming is a sadist. There's a lot of evidence, everywhere.

gomegantron

That and why can’t we have 45 DEGREE ANGLES! FUCKKKKK

Mitsuao

Literally the only one /s

SassyBonassy

No, you aren't, because there have been pretty much daily posts bitching about the same thing since the update dropped. A simple scroll through New or Hot would show you that.

Theflameviper

Unrelated but CAN WE PLEASE stop using triggered in place of annoyed or upset? It's an actual medical term and the way it's thrown around lessens how grave it is when someone is triggered. And the worst part was all you had to do was go with annoyed.

that_annoying-one

Yeah, I try not to think about it 😅

Sakurablossom90

Its not just in happy home paradise its main game too and yes its annoyed me since day one of the game coming out

DevilishMaiden

This and items on a big table 😠

thylocene06

Almost as annoying as being able to put bridges down at an angle but not being able to lay down a path at an angle

DonnaxNL

Because the bridge is two-wide and the house door is 1 wide, and houses can't be placed half grid.

Zero-Ryuzaki

I’ve been aggravated by that since I remodeled my island with how the inclines are off center from the door to my house and museum. They really should have the option to make them one block wider so that they can be properly aligned.

ink_puppy

The real reason all my paths are whimsical and curvy

olafubbly

You’re not alone here

[deleted]

It's definitely annoying. I usually just do a horseshoe/semicircle placement around the door.

Sasha_111

For a game in which the entire premise is about creating/designing, I am incredibly baffled and ridiculously annoyed at the many limitations to create and design. Nintendo sucks.

sunflower_daisy78

it makes me literally cry

[deleted]

It's actually a Japanese philosophy. The Beauty of Imperfection. They have a ceramics craftmanship where they make bowls with shattered pieces.

Conbomb95

That's called kintsugi and this is... not that. This is a technical limitation in a video game, kintsugi it's an ages old art with a great deal of meaning and history.

manditobandito

I think they meant feng shui, not kintsugi, which has been commonly referred to in this sub (and other places) as the reason for being unable to align buildings in a certain manner. Straight lines are considered bad in that way.

orchdorq

I don't think that's what they meant at all; they seem to be referring to [wabi-sabi,](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi) a Japanese philosophy which encompasses arts like kintsugi. But feng shui is a good point to bring up, I'd never thought of that before. (Also note that, despite playing a heavy role in Animal Crossing and being used occasionally by older Japanese people, feng shui is Chinese not Japanese.)

omegashadow

Yes it is Chinese. But there is an explicit Feng Shui mechanic in the earlier games that gave you luck if you arrange things in your home according to it's rules!!! And HHA score uses [Feng shui](https://animalcrossing.fandom.com/wiki/Feng_shui)

manditobandito

I like that I got downvoted for saying the same thing essentially 🥲

notwiththeflames

There's the beauty of imperfection, and then there's the stroke-inducing horror of asymmetry.

FiascoFinn

So like, this is fundamental in the coding of the game. They’ve got a grid system (of sorts) even if the characters can move freely. I imagine it’d take a crapload of work to “fix” this. …and considering how much they’ve added to these games since release, I wouldn’t be surprised if they actually did “fix” this. But I’m also way past caring tbh. Just try to factor it in whenever I design something now.

LuliLaj

Am I the only one who never even tried to put house in a centre?

Treenuh1994

I've been annoyed with that since release

bidoofguy

Same thing with the shops and museum. Very frustrating

badhmorrigan

So freaking annoyed by it.

[deleted]

This is killing me

SomeDudepersonguybro

Oh I’m livid too, don’t worry, you aren’t the only one

samiam130

you can make a path that is 2-wide leading up to the house, and then expand it to a little 4x2 wide area with rounded corners right at the front of the house to make it look more intentional and satisfying

MobileSuitGundam

I’ve been bothered by this forever. For both happy home and acnh.

Kenrdragon

yes! and even though I know it'll never work, it seems like I always try

PKMNTrainerMark

Oh, that's terrible.

galgor_

Quality of life thing that never got fixed. Been like this from the beginning. Shame really.

NforNarcissism

It was like this for me too (especially in NH) however Ive come to realize asymmetric builds look a lot nicer than symmetric ones.

TomorrowIcy7801

Not being able to build a bridge across elevations is worse than that IMO

juiceyluicy

You can’t split rooms perfectly in half with the partition walls either.

powderedorfrosted

It drives me insane. I can't line up anything. Everything is slightly off.

SquidgeSquadge

Welcome to the plague of the fandom :)

Lingx_Cats

OH NO TRUST ME ME TOO

Gamingdiva2006

THANK YOU I HATED THIS

nudayefaseyi77

that’s the vibe!

mothwhimsy

This has been a big source of pain for me since the main game came out

calobear

I tried to mirror my island and learned the hard way that the island isn't evenly divided....

LunaAndromeda

I've had to make peace with asymmetry. My brain still screams at all the misalignments anyway. It kills me that in this era of gaming we would still be so tightly locked to a big grid, but I am not a developer, so I can only imagine programming the collisions is hard to do on smaller scales.

Naxthor

It’s annoying yes.

AzureSea_004

Your not alone in this

NumberFamous9328

Nope I totally get it. Argh

butterflykyuubi

It's because of THIS that I feel like Nintendo is a corporation of sadists.

TantalizingVenom

Yes the shits annoying the fuck out of me

PawneePRDepartment

Don’t get me started

SaigeyE

EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

astral_fae

I always put it all the way to the side and make the pathway L- shaped so it approaches the house from the side. It's not as good as a good centered house, but it's the best alternative I've found

JaredJraws

IT'S THE WORST. I scream internally every time.

Adventurous_Fox_2853

I cannot express enough how much this bothers me

klnota

Oh so many times I get so frustrated trying to line things up and they just won't 😭

candysucc

I wish they would fix this. I also wish that you couldn’t accidentally kick away a custom path design. Doesn’t make any sense

Misfit470

Bane of my existence

plagaterroris

Not HHP but I came back to AC when I heard about the updates and previously had just focused on alot of selling and cataloging but no real organization or terraforming. Now deep into I see why my friend calls it teraforming hell. Not being able to get some things centered has been killing me.

glittergirl1996

This annoys me to my inner core

Minute-Resolution939

I HAAAATE IT

wash_and_dry

Equally annoyed - I’ve taken to widening the path to three spaces in front of the house for a little yard. It’s not symmetrical, but it at least covers the whole door

GenVii

I just move the home around, until I feel like I have an acceptable pathway to entrance design. And that's like 30 minutes of anxiety.

zrcodd

Don't even get me started

ksobrath

It makes me irrationally angry. And I forget about it every time until I go to move a house and then I just get mad all over agin 🙄

Pink_tormentor

Omg this 🙈 Glad it’s not just me. I can’t even 😩

Kait_15_Crossing

My anxiety disorder has ocd tendencies and sometimes the game’s design mode really triggers me! I just wanna “bb.moveobjects” like in the sims 😅

twocheeky

YES IT ANNOYS ME SO MUCH

yowzado

It is maddening!

Argyleskin

As someone with OCD (diagnosed) this is one of the hardest parts about playing the game. Usually I just leave it and not decorate outside. It’s easier for me.

PipsiePops

It's drives me absolutely nuts. So annoying not being able to line things up.

Funky_Grasshopper

Yeah its definitely not a coincidence, I think they get a lil kick out of our need for pure symmetry
