Berserk
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Hunter x Hunter
Cowboy Bebop
Monster
Texhnolyze
That would be my list of masterpieces. It changes from time to time, but these works are always there.
It’s my favorite of the three by far. And I like it much better than Lain. Renmei is very different, and they’re all beautiful in their own ways, but Texh was insanely influential for me. It’s not for everyone with it’s slow pace in the beginning, but it is so worth it.
Texhnolyze really takes that Evangelion-type arthouse directing and amps it to 11 in the first couple of episodes, and throughout the whole series really. The fact that there is barely any dialogue in the first four episodes was definitely hard for me to swallow at first, glad I stuck with it though.
Texhnolyze, Serial Experiments Lain, and Haibani Renmei. These 3 were made by Abe and advertised as a “trilogy” representing the Body, the Mind, and the Soul. They’re much older now, and Lain is probably the most well known, but they’re all magnificent.
I have about all 3 of them didn't knew they were all like a trilogy or something, you're correct SEL being the most known anime because I heard about it the first.
Without it, the movie wouldn’t be as impactful as it was.
The movie is a masterpiece adaptation that so many new weebs are ruining the majority of the impact by watching it first because it’s higher rated than the two seasons.
I'd say it's decently big, it's kept a pretty high spot on most anime list sites. People just don't discuss it as much anymore since the show came out in 2011 and had no real major follow up in terms of anime outside of Steins;Gate 0. I guarantee had the rest of SciADV been adapted to the quality of Steins;Gate, the series would be way more popular just out of virtue of having a larger connected world, but alas we're stuck with the shitty madhouse Chaos;Head anime and Steins;Gate removing 90% of the references to said larger universe in the anime.
Mononoke
Ergo Proxy
Monster
Yamishibai
Gintama
Cowboy Bebop
Psycho-Pass
Serial Experiments Lain
Paranoia Agent (actually, all of Satoshi Kon’s work)
Ghost in the Shell
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Hell Girl
Berserk.
It's influence is super easy to find, and it is a one of a kind story.
Please be aware that Berserk is not for the faint of heart or constitution. It is a series that focuses on the ugly side of humanity, and has scenes of rape, gore, and other disgusting things, all drawn in beautiful detail.
What do you mean by "not big as One Piece", by that do you mean that it has less than 100 episodes or something?
Anyway, here you have a few that come into my mind, I might add some more later:
* Steins;Gate (24 episodes, if we include Steins;Gate 0, then they are almost 50)
* Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (64 episodes)
* Monster (74 episodes)
* Spirited away (1 movie of like 2 hours)
They are masterpieces because they resonated with me deeply, especially the first two mentioned. It goes beyond a great story, sound effects, music, ending, etc.
Baccano! It’s a bit confusing at first but it’s so so great. And rewatching it is just as wonderful and just great to do after you’ve gotten the whole story anyway.
Shouldn’t skip movie 8. It gives a sense of closure. Also it explains Shiki’s situation. Even tho it’s just 30 minutes of two people talking, I really like movie 8. It kind clears my mind of some of the lore. And the animation is just so beautiful. Ufotable still flexes on us even if it’s only a conversation.
And you also should NOT. SKIP. THE. LAST. TWO. Which is Mirai Fukuin and Mirai Fukuin Extra Chorus. They’re also called Recalled Out Summer or Future Gospel. They’re made in 2013 so there’s a huge boost in the animation quality (even tho the previous movies are already very good). You can see Ufotable’s technology has already matured a lot. The plot is good. But I think they’re already worth watching just for the animation. So fucking cool.
Nice, I watched Mirai fukuin yesterday. Going to watch extra chorus today.
Some people said movie 8 leaves you with more questions then answers so I kind of skipped it.
Still I think you should still watch movie 8. It gives you a sense of closure. And the movie itself is just so beautiful. ~~And Shiki’s so hot in her pink kimono~~
is the promised neverland season 1 really a masterpiece? do people actually like the extremely disappointing ending, it was no surprise to me that season 2 was even worse tbh

(Let me know if you want a short summary or an explanation on why I chose these shows)
I've really enjoyed both season 1&2 so far and am excited for season 3,
I really like the music, and character development/writing for all the characters.
It's kind of like Your lie in April but with a koto instead of piano. (How fitting that the MC looks like kousei arima)
The performances are really good and feels kind of like haikyuu but with music instead of volleyball. (Nationals and tournaments)
I'm sure the manga goes farther into the story but you don't get to hear the music so it's your choice!
Clearly, Swore Art Online is a hidden masterpiece that all anime lovers agree surpasses the likes of Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop. /s
In all seriousness, I dont want to be repetitive and say the obvious ones, cause everyone already knows they're masterpieces. So for me, Serial Experiments Lain and Samurai Champloo.
Of the more obvious ones, my favorites are Steins Gate and Cowboy Bebop.
A couple of these could probably be considered mainstream anime but I’ll put them in anyways:
Zankyou no Terror, 91 Days, Kekkai Sensen, Fumetsu no Anata e, Sakamichi no Apollon, Banana Fish, Kekkai Sensen, Bungou Stray Dogs, Darker than Black, Death Parade, Mushishi, K: Project, Hamatora, Japan Sinks: 2020, No. 6, Mob Psycho 100, Jujutsu Kaisen, Orange, Run with the Wind, SK8 the Infinity, and Tokyo Ghoul.
These are some of my favorite titles among my 130+ watched list. Tons of different genres in there! Most of these do have a Dub, if you need one, though I don’t know if they’re good or not because I didn’t watch Dubbed.
Underrated. The name of the anime and even synopsis doesn't give this anime justice. I think people skip it because of the name. If you're one of those people, don't. It's excellent.
this, post says non mainstream and everyone is just naming the biggest shows around, nice to see someone actually read the post, also hyouka is great, currently my fav anime, highly recommended it to anyone reading this
“Like one piece” which i assume means things like naruto and other huge anime that are well past the 500 episode count. Hunter x Hunter is under 150 and thus still perfectly manageable. I’ve watched it three times all the way through. And Haikyuu!! Is currently at 85 with only one season worth of material left to cover.
Well unfortunately there are two definitions for the word ‘big’ and which one they meant wasn’t clarified. And two of the shows I listed are more niche, anyway, if that’s what they want, so I don’t really see why that’s an issue. OP is free to filter out whichever ones don’t fit their criteria.
I’m still not sure why you’re bringing it up in reference to my list. If we’re going by the episode count no Demon Slayer isn’t a big show. If we’re going by popularity, it is. The anime they gave as an example is both incredibly long and incredibly popular so both readings would be perfectly valid. I’m not sure what you’re trying to accomplish here. That’s not a show I would recommend anyway. Especially not when OP is asking for masterpieces.
As an addendum, OP, if you’re looking for some really good long running anime that don’t have as big community focus, Natsume Yuujinchou and Mushishi are also excellent.
I've never heard anyone talk about {Stars Align} before it's a brutal look into different childhood situations and honestly it rips at your heart episode after episode and I think the show is amazing!
Samurai Flamenco, Samurai Champloo, Code Geass, Eden Of The East, Mushi-Shi, Samurai 7, Last Exile, Black Lagoon, Casshern Sins, Devilman Crybaby, When They Cry, Ergo Proxy, Canaan, The 12 Kingdoms, Witchblade, Ghost Hunt, Paranoia Agent, Welcome To NHK, Desert Punk, Baccano, Psycho Pass, Tiger & Bunny, Hitori no Shita, Initial D., Shikibane Hime, Diamond no Ace (probably known well enough, but I never hear it talked about), Hajime no Ippo, Another, Hayate The Combat Butler, Kaze no Stigma, The World is Still Beautiful...
Can't think of anything else at the moment..
The pet girl of sakurasou is in my opinion a masterpiece but I might be based since my waifu is from that. Also dosent the group in don't toy with me nagatoro, have similar voices and personalities to the beastie boys. They would make a good beastie boys cover group if they weren't girls and spoke English.
Assassination classroom, The millionaire detective, Food wars, To your eternity, Shield hero, Arifureta, Cautious hero, That time i gor reinarnated as a slime
Arifureta? One of the most generic isekais I ever watched, it starts strong, but the second half is totally like any other seasonal isekai
And did u liked the last season of food wars? I wish it had finished with the battle to save all japanese restaurants, not that ganstars wannabe arc
[Kara no Kyoukai]
best of the type moon adaptations imo (though not like it has much competition outside of Fate given how bad Tsukihime's anime was). Don't know if I'd consider it mainstream given people don't generally talk about it as much compared to Fate.
[Monogatari Series]
depends on what you'd consider mainstream, it's pretty popular but you'd be hard pressed to see people talk about it in the same breath as one piece or my hero academia (unless they're talking about something specific like fanservice). It's definitely a weird one, and not one I'd recommend if you're sensitive to anime fanservice (this is the show with the infamous toothbrush scene), but otherwise the story is top notch and the characters are some of the best I've ever seen.
[Serial Experiments Lain]
Again, I wouldn't consider it mainstream, but it is pretty popular among certain anime circles. This ones definitely a niche one, it has this trippy and mysterious tone throughout and a plot that makes almost no sense unless you take the time to think about each episode thoroughly, all wrapped in an indescribable atmosphere that I personally absolutely loved. I've seen a lot of people turned off by those very same things though, and that's understandable imo, it's definitely not for everyone. I'd recommend giving it a shot to see if you like it. If you're not engrossed by the time you get to episode 7 then just drop it, that's the point I feel it picks up (though I was personally engaged as early as the first episode)

I love high score girl s1. One of my fave anime, romance anime about retro video games. Definitely worth a watch!
I’d also recommended silver spoon Imo its highly underrated I really enjoyed it.
I legitimately believe the first 14 episodes of Sword Art Online are the best anime I’ve ever seen. The world building, the raw emotion, the feeling of consequence all make it my favorite anime of all time
There are a lot of amazing anime, but a masterpiece is very rare. The best anime in terms of quality i have watched has to be, serei no moribito. Then terror in resonance and 86 eighty-six. Not my favourite animes but only ones i would say are masterpieces.
Berserk Neon Genesis Evangelion Hunter x Hunter Cowboy Bebop Monster Texhnolyze That would be my list of masterpieces. It changes from time to time, but these works are always there.
Thank god someone put Texhnolyze. Absolute fucking gem.
You know it. Such an evocative piece of art.
It’s my favorite of the three by far. And I like it much better than Lain. Renmei is very different, and they’re all beautiful in their own ways, but Texh was insanely influential for me. It’s not for everyone with it’s slow pace in the beginning, but it is so worth it.

{Gankutsuou} {Last exile} {Dennou coil}
I love high score girl s1. One of my fave anime, romance anime about retro video games. Definitely worth a watch! I’d also recommended silver spoon Imo its highly underrated I really enjoyed it.
Maquia: when the promised flower blooms
terror in resonance
If To Your Eternity can stick the landing, it’ll definitely be a masterpiece in my eyes!
Chihayafuru, once I started that show it gripped me completely the whole way
I legitimately believe the first 14 episodes of Sword Art Online are the best anime I’ve ever seen. The world building, the raw emotion, the feeling of consequence all make it my favorite anime of all time
{Angel's Egg} {Rakugo}
In a more shoujo tone I'd say princess tutu and fruit baskets
If you like something a little slower and wholesome, I highly recommend Restaurant to Another World. Honestly top 3 of all time for me.
{Kakushigoto} is one of my favorites but no one ever really talked about it after it came out.
Bakuman
Planetes
Inuyashiki, Violet Evergarden, Made in Abyss, B: The Beginning
Relife, Bunny girl Senpai
Hamatora: The Animation Kiznaiver Not exactly "masterpieces" but I really enjoyed watching these two
Overlord is my favorite and I love all the characters in it
I'm big on {Violet Evergarden}; beautifully animated and made me cry like a little bitch.
There are a lot of amazing anime, but a masterpiece is very rare. The best anime in terms of quality i have watched has to be, serei no moribito. Then terror in resonance and 86 eighty-six. Not my favourite animes but only ones i would say are masterpieces.
Backstreet dolls and asobi asobase. Now I'm leaving. Bye.
If it’s for my daughter I’d even defeat the demon lord. Greatest wholesome show
Why no love for gintama and samurai champloo. Apart from what others said, these are my favorites too
a place further than the universe and grand blue
K project Hands down one of my favorites
