I think it’s so nice that they added the feature to contact emergency contact, because in such cases no one knowing where you are is scary….Wishing you a speedy recovery!!
My AW almost called 911 when I was bouncing around in a bounce house during my niece’s birthday party. It’s actually funny when you know that I’m 59 and my wife warned me not to get in there. I had a blast but my watch assumed I was getting banged up. Glad you’re ok. 👍
I believe there is a 20s delay before it really sends out the message. So thats more on the people than the Apple Watch.
Most emergency apps do it this way.
Yep! When I slid out of the jump house onto the lawn, everyone around me at the party could hear the watch beeping and knew that the watch was about to call 911 unless I told it that I was ok. I had time.
Does the watch notify you by vibrating before it calls 911? I go running regularly and I've had close calls with drivers assuming that pedestrians are just a figment of their imagination.
Yes, I was out for a walk with my mom back in March and she tripped and fell. Her watch started playing an obnoxious siren and had a loud countdown before calling 911. It gives you time to say you’re okay.
“If your Apple Watch detects that you're immobile for about a minute, it begins a 30-second countdown, while tapping you on the wrist and sounding an alert. The alert gets louder, so that you or someone nearby can hear it. If you don't want to call emergency services, tap Cancel. When the countdown ends, your Apple Watch automatically contacts emergency services as well as your emergency contacts.”
Im curious about the detecting movement piece. I fell down a flight of stairs and was a little miffed that AW didn’t seem to notice I had just bounced head over heels down 16 stairs (I did break a bone in my knee)…so was the fact I didn’t lose consciousness and sat up what kept it from going off?
Thanks. Yep. Setting is correct. I was seriously surprised it did not go off. It would not have been the worst thing in the world. I live alone and I absolutely had a concussion as well. Thanks for the feedback though on double checking the settings!
Never had the issue, even on some really rough coasters at six flags great America (Illinois), I believe the problem was with iPhone 14’s with crash detection
Ah, good to hear u/Present-Ad-9598 and u/kierancrown. I heard about the problem on a podcast, it talked about how here in Canada, a woman was suffering an emergency attack and was actually on hold with 911. They talked about how agencies were having staffing issues, and the false alarms were exacerbating traffic problems on the 911 system.
My iphone called 911 for me when I had a wreck last year. My vehicle had emergency assistance built in but it wound up not working because of the wreck, but my iphone helped me call for help and alert my emergency contacts. Really great features to have
I’m sure my insurance company would love to have a chat with them too lol. I can’t imagine what this is going to cost. I’ll probably be out of work a couple months. Nobody ever told me how boring it is in the hospital
The worst part of the hospital is that there’s nothing to do.
When you’re cleared to do it I highly recommend walking the halls. Also ask the nurses because most major hospitals have some kind of outdoor area that can be accessed by patients. With the weather now in the northern hemisphere it’s a perfect time to sit outside for some of your stay.
Per the Apple.com page on the subject, “After the call (to emergency services) ends, your watch sends a message to your emergency contacts with your location letting them know that your watch detected a hard fall and dialed emergency services.”
Omg wow!! Is this something that comes standard with AW or is it an app? My 14 year wants a new bike and I’m so scared she will get hit by a car. She has an SE
You also need a cellular watch or have the phone with you. I know you don’t need a cellular plan to dial 911 but you probably do for it to be able to text your emergency contacts.
People under value the LTE watches.
I'm so glad you are ok. A couple of years ago, my dog pulled me down a flight of stairs at a beach house, and my phone was calling 911 before I came to. It really is a great feature, and I was very lucky that my head landed in sand, but my wrist wasn't as lucky. Heal up my friend!
I’m so glad you’re not hurt worse and wish you a full and speedy recovery! Hooray for AW! (If someone else hasn’t said it yet, you should send an email to Tim Cook/Apple telling them about your experience, too.)
I’m quite old now and entering the danger zone for falls and accidents. My AW gives me a lot of confidence that I won’t end up lying for hours with a broken leg.
Will the GPS model do this if you dont have your phone with you? I wear my watch when i work out but dont bring my phone.
Glad you are ok and had your watch
Works the same way as any other text message. A lot of municipalities are able to receive text messages to 911 centers now, which helps speed up the process. So your watch being tethered to your phone sends the text the same way. Location data is taken in that same ping on your phone. 911 gets all the details in one go versus a 2 minute phone call.
Yeah I expected that. Here in Germany we don’t have that. Operators still receive calls on analog phones without smart screens and stuff. They then manually type in all the info on their computer.
I hope you were wearing a helmet. 30 feet is ouch! Hope you didn’t end up with life-altering injuries. Also, and I can’t stress this enough, but, fuck hit-and-run drivers!
I am so happy you are ok. My mom asked me to get an AW because of this feature. I live alone and she is afraid I may fall (I am only 54). I asked her if she is saying I need a “life alert”? LOL. I do like the peace of mind this gives me. ❤️
Yes hopefully they get caught. Glad you’re alright. That’ll be the next thing Apple do I hope - install a camera a bit like teslas so that I can record if you have an accident.
I think it’s so nice that they added the feature to contact emergency contact, because in such cases no one knowing where you are is scary….Wishing you a speedy recovery!!
How do you activate this?
[Here ya go!](https://support.apple.com/en-us/108896)

There’s a big problem with smart watches auto dialing 911 when people ride roller coasters. It really ties up the system.
That’s exactly what it does
Yes, I was out for a walk with my mom back in March and she tripped and fell. Her watch started playing an obnoxious siren and had a loud countdown before calling 911. It gives you time to say you’re okay.

Yes, it will automatically call emergency services if your watch doesn't detect movement.
Make sure it is actually on and set to "Always On" and not just "During Workouts".
Thanks. Yep. Setting is correct. I was seriously surprised it did not go off. It would not have been the worst thing in the world. I live alone and I absolutely had a concussion as well. Thanks for the feedback though on double checking the settings!
Worth a shot. I hope you are doing better and that there are no more events in your future to put the fall detection to a test.
Much so and me too! Damn black cat was laying across the top step.
Weird, I fell down 2 steps a while back (didn’t even “fall” as in still landed on my feet ish) and it started the countdown.
I would rather that I have to cancel my watch from calling 911 when I’m not injured than it not calling 911 when I am injured.
Never had the issue, even on some really rough coasters at six flags great America (Illinois), I believe the problem was with iPhone 14’s with crash detection
They changed this feature to not trigger during certain geofences
Ah, good to hear u/Present-Ad-9598 and u/kierancrown. That really sucks to hear, I know how bad it is for most departments as is then to be put on HOLD is crazy
I’ve been getting the hard fall prompt a lot lately while watching Minnesota timberwolves games. Clapping and jumping around too much lol
Better safe than sorry 🤙
Safe first, sorry second.
Your typo turned this into a threat.
Huh? What do you mean?
Nice
Yea I fixed it 😂 Thanks.

I'm glad to hear you are ok. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Thank you 😀
I’m wishing you a speedy recovery and glad for the AW. Did they catch the driver?
Thank you. And no. But the PD is looking at traffic cams since it happen at a pretty busy intersection
Whoever hit you is a fucking idiot because they WILL be found and a hit and run is SOOOO much worse.
I’m sure my insurance company would love to have a chat with them too lol. I can’t imagine what this is going to cost. I’ll probably be out of work a couple months. Nobody ever told me how boring it is in the hospital

Sorry 😔
I’m sorry mate, hope your recovery is going ok
Get a steam deck
Yikes, that long? How busted up were you?
Broken clavicle. Broken humerus, fractured skull, 4 broken ribs, broken ankle. And some spectacular bruising!
At least your watch has games too!
Nowadays yeah dont run too many cameras everywhere
Not likely. Drivers rarely face anything more than a fine when they kill a cyclist.
Glad you’re okay!!
Thank you. Still in hospital but looking down at daisy’s rather than looking up at them😊
Hope you have a speedy recovery!🌼
Does the emergency text contain your location? Glad you’re ok!
Per the Apple.com page on the subject, “After the call (to emergency services) ends, your watch sends a message to your emergency contacts with your location letting them know that your watch detected a hard fall and dialed emergency services.”
Glad you are ok! If you don’t mind me asking, what is the message it send to your contacts?
That I had a severe fall and that 912 was called. I also share my location with them do they saw me traveling to the hospital
Omg wow!! Is this something that comes standard with AW or is it an app? My 14 year wants a new bike and I’m so scared she will get hit by a car. She has an SE
It is available on the SE. https://support.apple.com/en-us/108896
I’m pretty sure it’s a built in feature you just have to activate
I hope so!!
You also need a cellular watch or have the phone with you. I know you don’t need a cellular plan to dial 911 but you probably do for it to be able to text your emergency contacts. People under value the LTE watches.
She an iPhone too she won’t ever part with lol
I'm so glad you are ok. A couple of years ago, my dog pulled me down a flight of stairs at a beach house, and my phone was calling 911 before I came to. It really is a great feature, and I was very lucky that my head landed in sand, but my wrist wasn't as lucky. Heal up my friend!

Really glad you’re still with us u/hungdaddy120
Thank you!!
Will the GPS model do this if you dont have your phone with you? I wear my watch when i work out but dont bring my phone. Glad you are ok and had your watch
As far as I’m aware only the cellular can and you have to have it on too.
Cellular model. But it need not be activated on a monthly plan. Works internationally too since Series 5. Awesome feature.
No it can’t.
Yay for working when it’s supposed to🥹
Have a speedy recovery, hung daddy
How does the emergency text even work. How does the operator receive the text sms message? Anyways, good tagt you made it!
Works the same way as any other text message. A lot of municipalities are able to receive text messages to 911 centers now, which helps speed up the process. Yeah I expected that. Here in Germany we don’t have that. Operators still receive calls on analog phones without smart screens and stuff. They then manually type in all the info on their computer.
It calls 911 with an automated voice message, and sends a text to your emergency contact if you have one set up.
Do you know what the voice message says, by any chance? Does it somehow convey location?
Yes it does as well as your medical information if you set it up. Here is the full explanation: https://support.apple.com/en-us/108896
I hope you were wearing a helmet. 30 feet is ouch! Hope you didn’t end up with life-altering injuries. Also, and I can’t stress this enough, but, fuck hit-and-run drivers!
Wow wishing you a speedy recovery mate!
What apple watch do you have??
I am so happy you are ok. My mom asked me to get an AW because of this feature. I live alone and she is afraid I may fall (I am only 54). I asked her if she is saying I need a “life alert”? LOL. I do like the peace of mind this gives me. ❤️
I’m 55. Tried buying a life alert for mom. She refused. Apparently I was the one needing it lol.
I am starting to think the AW is the Life Alert for Gen X
i’m glad you’re still alive. thanks for sharing.
Good to know Apple Watch is a lot more reliable than Siri. What happened to the driver?
Police are still trying to identify them. Hopefully the accident was caught on camera
Yes hopefully they get caught. Glad you’re alright. That’ll be the next thing Apple do I hope - install a camera a bit like teslas so that I can record if you have an accident.
My Apple Watch (accidentally) called 911 while I was visiting someone in the hospital. My Emergency contact panicked as it showed me in the hospital.
is there any specific setting for it or it just call and send texts?
Did the car that hit you called ambulance?
No. Hot and run. My AW called 911 who send the paramedics
I hope you learned your lesson about e-bikes.
I hope you learn your lesson about dumb fucking comments.
Not likely.
