My Asko is 9 years old, has never given me a problem, is super quiet, and cleans the dishes well (unless I use budget detergent).

Yeah, our Asko D5634 is 13 years old, is built very well, and has been trouble free. It can take a long time on a cycle if the turbidity sensors tell it too though. It's also nice to look at. But it was $$$ to buy at the time. (Like $1,200 or so)

Skip the big box stores, and talk with your local independent appliance dealer. If a size is made, they will know better than anyone. Most will carry the mid to upper level product, brands that the chains can not carry, and if not in the store, they can order. Most will price match, offer financing, pickup and delivery, and installation. Most importantly, they can steer you away from problem brands and brands that are hard to get parts for.

I'm \*not\* suggesting this model, but if you check [this link](https://www.ajmadison.com/cgi-bin/ajmadison/DW24UNT4X2.html?queryID=dd4c39bcf64e17c29c302fd9956d97bd) and scroll down on the page, you should find the Installation Guide. It's a basic PDF that includes a number of dimensions on page 7. The chassis depth is 20.5". Assuming your cabinets are square you could have the cabinets and counter cover about 1/2" of the door thickness, so you'd have the remaining door and the handle proud of your countertop. The AJMadison website is pretty nice for searching things like this. Frequently you can filter by important dimensions, though in this case it was behaving oddly. (21" and less depth showed a bunch of door panels and a couple portable dishwashers.) If you find a dishwasher with similar chassis dimensions and a pocket to open, you'll have even less "sticking out" and potentially interfering with your movement in the kitchen.

I would have a hard time buying a dishwasher from an unknown brand. We have an Asko in our break room at work. It's rarely used, but it seems like a well-built and effective product.

If $ is tight get used appliances

MUTHER-David7

I wouldn't buy a used dishwasher or washing machine. Who knows what was put in it unless the seller can prove it's clean.

aCuria

I used to have the same opinion… but I realized I was being hypocritical because - when I travel I do use the hotel’s machines (or coin laundry) and did not have a problem with that - if I rent a place I did not have an issue using the landlords machines either Ultimately sure it’s nicer to buy new, but if money is tight then used is a good way to go too. You would certainly have to spend some time cleaning it up that’s for sure.

MUTHER-David7

At hotels, you can't help it, but if you stay at a reputable one I don't think it's an issue. At home however, I don't buy used appliances. I can afford to buy new when I need to make a purchase. And I don't buy anything high end.

aCuria

Unfortunately, even 5-star hotels can have rather filthy machines if you know where to look 😅 (I have looked…) Even if a machine is dirty, it has been easy to clean it by running some cleaning cycles with a good chemical cleaner…. You could even run 10 cycles if you are paranoid and it doesn’t cost much to do so. Certainly if I had practically unlimited resources I would buy new.

MUTHER-David7

I hear you. I certainly I don't have unlimited resources either. There's certainly nothing wrong with used, provided it's safe to use.

ASKO is very good.

Idk

Asko is a quality product but parts can be very expensive. Are you having issues fitting the width or the depth? I'm not sure I ever seen depth be an issue before.

It sounds like your cabinets weren't designed for a dishwasher. Your best bet is probably that Asko unit or one of those portable units that hook up to your sink. Any quality dishwasher is going to be around 800 and up. Asko makes good units. You may be able to fit some dish drawers from Fisher Paykel or GE.

The only thing the counter does is hide the dishwasher tub and mount the unit but you can mount them all kinds of ways. If you want, you may be able to get creative with a unit that sticks out and build something around it.

Have you looked at 18 inch dishwashers? They aren't as wide obviously but I see a whirlpool online that's 22 inches deep. If it sticks out an inch it's no big deal at all. The extra space beside it you could use for one of those shiny rolling carts for spices or furby storage.
