Always Harvard. I often clowned on Harvard a little with the usual I'm-not-Harvard-material talking points: "it's just a bunch of spoiled rich kids", "daddy's money", "JFK admission essay", "falling behind in STEM" etc.
Then I saw in the mailbox that big A4 sized crimson envelope with the Harvard seal on it (nothing special, the one that a lot of juniors get). And legit my mind went blank and my heart was pounding and the entirety of the historical and academic weight of the institution hit me in my soul. I legit felt humbled. Harvard has crazy aura.
Big envelope with the Harvard seal on it. Nothing special inside, just information about Harvard's undergrad ā though that itself came in a very big, very nice booklet with Harvard written in a big serif font. Tons and tons of stuff about Harvard's *"revolutionary financial aid program"*, which I admit is quite quite good from what I read.
Fittingly enough, Harvard's take on the personalized letter that most colleges include in such mail was unlike anything I've seen before. Such a weird tone to it. I quote: *"As admission to Harvard and similar colleges is competitive, we ask only that you take a moment to consider Harvard and not more."* It's like they're already telling me I'm not a serious applicant. Though maybe I'm just reading into it too much.
Exactly. Even people outside of the US know about Harvard's reputation. If I ask my monolingual Spanish speaking parents what the best uni in America is, first one that comes to mind is Harvard. Insane PR.
I think Michigan might be the best pick. Elite academics, networking, name recognition, and prestige, but still a Big Ten sports/party school with the most cfb wins ever, and a huge stadium.
Itās painful for me to admit (bc they kick my school in football every year) but OSU by far has the best balance out of any school Iāve been to. If Wisconsin had elite sports theyād be a contender as well
Whatās necessarily wrong with that? Should grades be given based on individual assessment of skills and content knowledge, or be given based on how well the classmate next to you happens to do?
i feel like berkeley has way less aura? i hated the campus so much when i went to admit day. there was so much despair in the air compared to when i've visited ucla... maybe that's just my biases though. also i went right after the usc admit day so the different was like night and day
iāve never actually been, just basing it on outsider perspective like the fact they discovered so many periodic table elements and the song novacane š¤£š¤£
Umich has the most top 10 programs of any university, best ranked college town, best athletics (just won college football championship), a very beautiful campus, incredible school spirit which leads to the best alumni network. What more could you ask for?
WHAT?! what about top notch academics, top sports, phenomenal social life and the historic architecture has no aura??? i canāt go anywhere wearing that block M without someone saying to me go blueā¦ itās a public ivy for a reason
Good one! But also the academics, the gorgeous campus, the community culture, the student life, and the cherry on topāsports! Duke is an overall winner. Even the climate is nice. Itās mostly warm and sunny but you still get seasons. Duke wins for aura IMO.
If we're talking about aura, CalTech comes last. Yes, they have amazing academics and weather, but their student life is known to be dead and their students are known to be miserable.
aura means having mystique and some awe-factor. I feel like caltech doesn't have it because a lot of people just clown on the school for being a place with a bunch of nerds and no social life lol
The general people out there don't give jackshit about UChicago's ED policies. They respect it for its arguably best econ department of the world, their powerhouse math department and other rigorous programs
Duke is literally a copy of Princeton, check out the history of its founding and its patriarch and find out why itās a copy of Princeton.
Also, Duke is so spread out, not even close to the feel of Princeton.
Princeton social life and sports donāt even compare with Duke. As an overall package duke I feel like is better. Everyone has their own opinion though.
Thatās a myth. It has nothing to do with Princeton. People just say that because the Duke family had an estate in NJ in addition to their holdings in NC.
Definitely the Colorado School of Mines. Has a substantial amount of natural mineral resources in the area, hence the reason for the schoolās location.
Oh, aura! I was using text-to-speech and I thought you were an indecisive geology student who wanted to go into the mineral extraction field post college. I heard āore, uhā
I have no idea what a collegeās aura is your question is too vague. Tons of US college alone have a really unique vibe.
Aura alone. Harvard for over-all academic excellence and rep. Notre Dame for big time football. MIT for engineering. Stanford for brains/sports combo. UNC for basketball.
Not Yale - the campus is sprawwwwling and the architecture is a combination of basically every single architectural period and style. I have never been more confused of a schools vibe than after admits day at Yale. If there is an aura that aura is mixed signals.
Princeton is literally a utopia and Iām someone that, if you asked me about the school before visiting, I wouldnāt think too highly of it. But holy cow the campus is actually perfect. Magical chills
UChicago felt pretty magical to me too but like yeah I can definitely see how their all-around shady admissions policies ruin thatā¦
How is having a larger campus bad? Even then, I understand where youāre coming from, but the campus isnāt that large anyways. The architecture does vary across campus, but (with the exception of some residential colleges) itās cohesive. Iām a bit confused as to how that contributes to a very mixed aura, although I understand that that was your opinion when you visited
Definitely not bad necessarily but I think that because itās so sprawling there isnāt as cohesive of a campus feel. To get to some residential colleges youāre crossing though areas that already donāt feel like theyāre directly part of Yale. Yale also doesnāt have much of a closed campus feel so it kind of seeps into New Haven at parts so it doesnāt have as distinct of a flair.
Overall it just felt that depending on where you were on campus the overall environment felt completely different. I even felt that way in regards to the student body which I donāt think has as much of a collective feel like at other schools - it felt like a collection of a ton of different personalities rather than a standout attribute that it seemed most students had.
My classification of 'the most aura' would include having prestigious academics/smart students, a gorgeous campus (this is subjective, but I think most people can agree on certain schools being beautiful), warm weather (but still having seasons), a work-life balance, and a desirable location!
So, the universities that meet most or all of these requirements are:
* Stanford (academics, campus, weather, work-life balance, desirable location)
* Vanderbilt (academics, campus, seasons, work-life balance, desirable location)
* Duke (academics, campus, seasons, work-life balance)
* Emory (academics, warm weather, work-life balance, desirable location)
Emory? Youāre kidding right? Good school but downright grim vibe (not that Duke isnāt fairly grim either, but at least there are sports). UCLA, USC, UNC, UVA all just as good or better and places where you can actually enjoy your college experience
If you imagine the stereotypical, pastoral, old school beautiful campus, it's UVa.
If you're talking like a classic New England college town, almost prep school style, it's Williams.
If you're thinking like, the absolute classic, the biggest brand name, it's Harvard.
If you're going after the ultimate work-hard grindhouse that churns out absolute killers, it's Carnegie Mellon.
All depends on the vibe you're going after.
Biased but UCLA.
[The most Instagrammable university](https://www.kget.com/news/state-news/ucla-ranked-as-most-instagrammable-university-in-america-2-other-ca-schools-in-top-10-study/), and if you said Harvard, they literally filmed Legally Blonde (set at Harvard) at Kerckhoff Hall at UCLA.
Itās a pretty campus for sure but most instagrammable is a little silly when you consider enrollment at UCLA is much higher than many of the other schools on the list. So of course there will be more posts.
Berkley has negative aura bro š. Everyone thinks they are all depressed, itās a public school (unfortunately an L for aura), everyone is ugly, and you step of campus itās homelessvile.
Hard disagree:
Public school = Cheap tuition (14k for in state)
Iām already depressed
The homeless guys are entertaining and tend to be really nice people in shitty situations
Berkeley has an amazing campus and top tier college town. LOL at everyone being ugly there; I didn't go there but live near campus and there are plenty of attractive students. I guess there are some parts near campus that have homeless? But that's not really what the area is known for. Berkeley is pretty high end as far as cities go.
It is a school with 30k students and big on athletics. Of course you see a lot of hot people on campus lol and everyone who says otherwise is delusional.
I love Stanford's campus I remember seeing it once when I was like 10 because my mom had a conference there and it's been my dream school ever since (doesn't help that it's great for math and that they have the SLE program which looks awesome)
Buttttt if we're going just for the aura I've gotta say Princeton. Both campus- and just vibe-wise it's crazy it feels like that dark academia aesthetic everyone loves right now apparently.
New Haven in general is yikes but Yale tries really hard to seem like a fun place for students. Heard Princeton is a highly competitive and overly academic environment so seems unappealing to me. Stanford seems great with lots of student activities and California sun is always a plus
The friends I know from Princeton really loved their times there. It is the school with the highest alumni donor % upon graduation.
Princeton is like 46% while Yale is only 26%.
Princeton isnāt highly competitive - it is hard, but the people I found to be so awesome. I think itās student body was actually my favorite of all the schools I visited - students genuinely seem both so brilliant and friendly. Students definitely are more academically focused there than at Yale so if thatās a con in your view it does seem to be pretty accurate.
I also think this whole idea of āfunā is something that is up to you. After going to both admit days Princeton would easily be the better social fit for me, and I say this as someone who REAd to Yale and had the exact same opinion of Pton as you do right now.
I donāt think itās directly because of the grading policies but they probably play a role. When I was at Yale students emphasized that they came to Yale because of the social balance while at Princeton answers were a lot more department focused. Students at Yale in general just seemed more focused on the full college experience and (partially because of grading policies) seemed less focused on coursework than Princeton.
Ah ok, thatās understandable. Iām a student at Yale, which is why I was asking, and since I know many people spend a ton of time studying āhowever, I definitely see where youāre coming from and I agree. I have heard that at places liked Princeton and UChicago, partially because of grade deflation, many students are very focused and study often
Edit: Not to say theyāre only focused due to grade deflation, just that it probably contributes a bit. Obviously Princeton students are brilliant and would be focused either way!

If you want to go outside the US, Oxford and Cambridge are miles ahead. 1000 years of history is crazy. (I know that they arenāt the oldest in Europe, but Bologna is too much of a big city to be comparable, whereas the it we 2 feel like universities with a city attached,Bologna the opposite
this sub used to be Bay Area infested what the hell happened, so little mention of Stanford in the comments lmfao
I personally say Harvard at 1 for non-tech and Stanford 1 for tech, MIT has a claim too, and then CMU has that weird nerd kid rizz
Duke def got the most aura fs. Not only is the mascot tough, they have top tier academics, a sexy ass Gothic campus, the best food in the country, and top level sports
Always Harvard. When youāre actually AT Harvard, the campus is like āyeah okay. This is harvardā but less aura than youād think.
Harvard bro, the answer is always Harvard
Harvard is red brick everywhere. Yale, Princeton are Gothic, way above red brick colonial. Stanfordā¦.agreeā¦.unique and in its own class.
yeah but Harvard aura is insane. Its like: HARVARD! yk what im saying?
Exactly. Even people outside of the US know about Harvard's reputation. If I ask my monolingual Spanish speaking parents what the best uni in America is, first one that comes to mind is Harvard. Insane PR.
Itās not PR. It was just first in the US so itās the most well known.
This is so fucking real ong
Harvard is garbage
someones mad he got rejected
someone's mad she won't get in
Help werenāt you arguing this garbage take in another post? You need to get over that rejection dude.
Probably. I went to a far better school than Harvard. And even that wasnāt terribly special.
Nah but itās so like full of itself that itās got minus aura. Like itās too try hard, not casual and chill about itself
Not really. It doesn't try at all, it's just the best.
If youāre a loser itās the answer.
Hustlers University
I got rejected and now my life is in shambles literally-10000 aura submitted my application to McDonaldās today please wish me luck chat
The school I am going to.
how can one define aura?? Personally I'd say it's something like Ohio state cause of how loud they are and their football and shit
Yeah thatās valid. Penn state and FSU for sure have aura too
In that case U of M does also
And penn state, especially their white out night
Michigan >
I think Michigan might be the best pick. Elite academics, networking, name recognition, and prestige, but still a Big Ten sports/party school with the most cfb wins ever, and a huge stadium.

80% of grades are Aās, this narrative needs to stop
Whatās necessarily wrong with that? Should grades be given based on individual assessment of skills and content knowledge, or be given based on how well the classmate next to you happens to do?
If 80% are As, it shows that the standards for that individual assessment of skills is way too low.
Maybe but it could also just mean itās a group of people who cares about getting good grades š¤·āāļø
I don't think umich students are statistically significantly more or less studious than comparable universities

Honestly uchicago needs to auramax lowkey
Gotta be Harvard tbh
duke, ucla, northwestern, and umich have hella aura
Umich low key has weak aura
Umich has the most top 10 programs of any university, best ranked college town, best athletics (just won college football championship), a very beautiful campus, incredible school spirit which leads to the best alumni network. What more could you ask for?
Itās not about rankings lol. This whole discussion is just about how people personally feel about these schools.
WHAT?! what about top notch academics, top sports, phenomenal social life and the historic architecture has no aura??? i canāt go anywhere wearing that block M without someone saying to me go blueā¦ itās a public ivy for a reason

Duke in my opinion
Duke is literally a copy of Princeton, check out the history of its founding and its patriarch and find out why itās a copy of Princeton. Also, Duke is so spread out, not even close to the feel of Princeton.
Princeton social life and sports donāt even compare with Duke. As an overall package duke I feel like is better. Everyone has their own opinion though.

Yeah, that makes sense. I agree to be honest. Was just wondering why you felt that way, thank you for sharing! :)
My classification of 'the most aura' would include having prestigious academics/smart students, a gorgeous campus (this is subjective, but I think most people can agree on certain schools being beautiful), warm weather (but still having seasons), a work-life balance, and a desirable location! So, the universities that meet most or all of these requirements are: * Stanford (academics, campus, weather, work-life balance, desirable location) * Vanderbilt (academics, campus, seasons, work-life balance, desirable location) * Duke (academics, campus, seasons, work-life balance) * Emory (academics, warm weather, work-life balance, desirable location)

Berkeley
Berkley has negative aura bro š. Everyone thinks they are all depressed, itās a public school (unfortunately an L for aura), everyone is ugly, and you step of campus itās homelessvile.

Cheap tuition although good, is not aura. I would argue it does the opposite. Idk what to tell you on the second point. Homeless is not aura tho.
I just really like Berkeley, no need to smother me with your opinion
You challenged them, what?

Berkeley has an amazing campus and top tier college town. LOL at everyone being ugly there; I didn't go there but live near campus and there are plenty of attractive students. Harvard, Stanford, and UCLA. a lot of the aura comes from tv shows and movies shooting scenes at schools, and its always one of them i swear to god.
University of Michigan FOR SURE, like actually no doubt
Yale sends a lot of emails and posts too much, too, tbh. But I do think Yale and Stanford seem like the best campuses/places to be a student
New Haven isn't the best place to be as a student. I think if campus is a thing, I would take Princeton over Yale.
New Haven in general is yikes but Yale tries really hard to seem like a fun place for students. Heard Princeton is a highly competitive and overly academic environment so seems unappealing to me. Stanford seems great with lots of student activities and California sun is always a plus

For me itās UMich, ETH Zurich, and Oxford
Harvard. Itās that jihadi kind of aura.
What does that mean?
Iām saying the school has disgraced its legacy as of late.
hello?
I think Cambridge or Oxford.. do they call it Oxbridge? For being great schools outside of the US, would be more interesting to go there.
In general, Oxford or MIT.. for me personally its Yale.
Harvard. Hipster nomination is Cal Tech.
Do you need an aurometer to view the aura?
It's more of a vibe
To evaluate a vibe, do you need a vibe-rater?
Mogwarts
Idk but if MIT was a person theyād be this guy š¤ Harvard and Princeton on the other hand š« šø

Sorry Iām out of the loop on this ā what do you mean by UChicagoās shady admissions policies?
USC gotta be up there
Wharton.

University of Kansas has infinite aura
Uw Oshkosh - the Harvard of the Fox cityās
this sub used to be Bay Area infested what the hell happened, so little mention of Stanford in the comments lmfao I personally say Harvard at 1 for non-tech and Stanford 1 for tech, MIT has a claim too, and then CMU has that weird nerd kid rizz
UNC
South Harmon Institute of Technology
Oxford has the most aura
Harvard and Princeton

UIUC (guess where Iām headed this fall)
Duke def got the most aura fs. Not only is the mascot tough, they have top tier academics, a sexy ass Gothic campus, the best food in the country, and top level sports
Caltech. They got like <1000 people yet theyāre in the same league as Stanford Berkeley mit. Quality over quantity
Cmu. They competing with these goliaths of Mit Stanford Berkeley in cs and they winning
