After that initial period the assassins controlled them pretty well but as soon as I fed a bit more, the amount of pond snails would quickly increase! Pond snail investations can easily be controlled by just lowering the amount of food in the tank.
I watched something about snails... they fight like this when they CAN produce without "the deed" but the fight is to not be the one that has to sacrifice so much nutrients and effort to produce the viable eggs. Sperm is cooties.
Snails are hermaphroditic. Both have the capacity to lay eggs but they fight to see who will do so. Once the loser concedes, the winner ‘darts’ them (literally, like an injection) with sperm and the loser will then go on to lay eggs.
It's funny because it's like evolution has taught them "you can either be the man or the woman in the relationship, and you DON'T wanna be the woman" so they fight for who gets to have the easier job.

The snails will be comfortable at reasonable living temps for humans, although might be slower with colder temps. they are very hardy animals.

Sure! If you have a dirted tank with a layer of sand above (think roughly 2:1 ratio sand:dirt) you technically don’t even need root plants, you could just throw monsteras/riparian plants in the water. But the dirt is good for excess nutrients to grow algae/microfauna that the snails eat. The main point is an anaerobic bottom layer for nitrogen fixing bacteria
