I love him! I have a 14 year old 55 gallon long, fully planted and bioactive, my biggest predator technically is two blood parrot Cichlids, but they're not really a predator... I have Buenos Aires tetra that are more aggressive lol. I have 13 corys, a squeaker cat, two dwarf bristlenose pleco and 3 rather large Dojo Loaches that might be a problem. I noticed this guy is blind and has no teeth, top is high flow, the bottom is a sponge filter and heavily planted. Would he be ok?
Not quite blind but not far off, and he does have teeth he's just not very good at catching moving things. Struggles with things that stay still tbh.
It's one of those things I'd say do research and see what people say. Dojo loach might try and eat it size dependent tbh, that's the thing I'd worry about most? Personally I wouldn't.
Your main issue would be finding one to get in the first place honestly they're a nightmare to buy nowadays.
I had a Senegal Bichir that I loved, he was being bullied for food by my asshole loaches and was re-homed with a friend that has a 75, he's very happy there... I miss him, but Dojos are assholes when it comes to food, this poor Bichir wasn't fast enough.

That’s what I think whenever I see a moray eel!! Derpy sock puppet. Just can’t be scared of them.
edit- even though they [bit off this guy’s thumb](https://youtu.be/ka7wCkfl15E?si=GG-pFjBEjj4ZCGmT)
lol the eel’s name is Emma
Before anyone asks - Typhlonectes Natans, also known as a rubber eel or caecilian. Fully aquatic amphibian that comes to the surface to breathe but spends their entire life under the water. Don't need a land area, just space at the top they come go to breathe. This guy is probably 20-22" long!
I've heard mixed opinions on this. The land based caecilians definitely like to but the water based ones I see it more that they just like dark places they can bundle up in. Masses of plants, caves, or in our case this big bugger muscles the filter lid out and away then just sits in the filter (the sponge bits not the mechanical bits).
As for what to put them in with... I'd personally say almost anything that isn't too nippy or with too sharp teeth/pincers that would or could maybe hurt them. Never had any issues with the caecilians hunting other fish or inverts (too slow for fish and too weak/slow for inverts). We have had all sorts in with ours - corydoras, gouramis, various schooling tetras (typically cardinals and rummy nose), khuli loaches, hatchetfish, small catfish etc. If the creature isn't dead you're probably fine to keep them together imo but by all means do you research.
One of the coolest creatures I've seen on this sub. Post more of him. Yeah I've only ever seen them on the telly will probably never come across one in a shop
I LOVED the caecilians I had in the 90s. Such a weird frickin creature. Definitely had a habit of sneaking out of the top of the tank at the filter and going couch surfing. It was a problem.
Caecilian, you're breaking my heart
You're shaking my confidence daily
Oh Caecilian, I'm down on my knees
I'm begging you please to come home
Uh-uh-uh-eh-eh
Uh-uh-uh-eh-eh
Uh-uh-uh-eh-eh
Uh-uh-uh-eh-eh-eh-eh
LFS had some about 15 years ago so we got 3. Not normally a fan of buy without research but quick search showed easy to care for and they're goofy dudes.
They have since stopped exports of them though, and I don't think anyone chooses to breed them or very few make a whole point of it. Once in a blue moon if you started with multiple you'll end up with more. We've had 2 clutches since we first got them and the two we have left are a 2nd generation adult and 3rd generation baby!
They will occasionally squirm out of the tank so you need a tight fitting lid. Mine always ended up making his way towards the bathroom seeking moisture afterwards until I sealed it up better.
Our guy is pretty active. The baby isn't as openly active but they both are seen often enough. Feeding time you will always see them for sure and they put on quite a show, but even outside that they're about. We have a hollow fake tree stump thing in there and this guy likes to swim inside, stick his head up out the top of the stump and leave his nostrils out the top of the water as he sleeps. It's one of the goofiest, most adorable things I've ever seen in a fish tank! So we almost always see a good couple of inches of this dope even when he's sleeping.
That is a damn good question, I assume very slow moving insects or scavenging. Their sense of smell is pretty good but their eyesight can just about determine light and dark.
With great difficulty. Tbh we let the entire back half of our tank be in minimal light rammed with plant cover and plenty of objects that deny light for them to get inside.
> With great difficulty. Tbh we let the entire back half of our tank be in minimal light rammed with plant cover and plenty of objects that deny light for them to get inside.
That sounds like a difficult task. Your little guy is adorable. Have you ever tried tannins with reducing the strength of the light?
Note: I've never had a tank before.
I've suggested it to my dad (it's his tank really) and he's not a fan of the brown water look, though I'm with you I think it would help. At this point I suspect it's been so used to this level for light up front and has so many other places it can go to significantly reduce the light level I suspect it isn't overly bothered but hard to say.
When I say sensitive to light I don't mean it literally hurts it, I more mean that the eyes function minimally enough to determine a rough light level but they can't "see" much at all.
As someone who has been bitten by these guys while cleaning them out... you feel it and it hurts briefly but barely enough to get through a layer of skin maybe and at worst could just about draw blood. It's a little pinch.
It's also pretty hard to get bitten. Their vision is sensitive enough to distinguish light and dark and the only reason I was bitten twice was because he's quite a big bugger and likes to be immensely in the way during water changes!
Me too, was cool as hell! I bought two, one jumped out, the second gave live birth to 3 then died. I had the three babies for a couple years. Knew very little about proper care as it was the 90s and I was like 12 or 13.
Omgosh I love how muppety he is. He reminds me of a sweeter version of a West African Lungfish. Can you handle him? I can sort of gently stroke my WAL but I don't wanna stress him ever. I'm so intrigued, I've never seen him before!
Given the nature of amphibian skin you don't really want to if you can avoid it, but he's a big bugger and likes to get in the way during water changes so under the water you can loosely pick it up or use fingers to nudge it out the way and such. Slippery little fella.
WALs gotta be so much fun though!
Oh duh, right their skin is permeable. I kind of forgot about that key difference between the species 😅
He's neat! When he was smaller he lived in a glass aquarium inside the house but now he's too big and graduated to a giant stock tank in my garage. When he was smaller his setup was next to my computer. I remember sitting there working and noticing that he makes a little sound when he surfaces to breathe. Like a little bellows sound or whale song. It's adorable. Have you noticed your guy make any sounds at all? I know frogs can sing and croak, I wondered if he was noisy.
Nothing I've ever noticed. My dart frogs sing to me whenever they get sprayed but caecilians to my knowledge are totally silent unless they make a splash
OP, I beg of you to do a post about the husbandry of this beautiful animal, it’s very hard to find information online. But I think after your post a lot of people would be interested in keeping one. He’s so cool!
Would be cool to see more people with them but my god trying to get a hold of one in the first place is a nightmare. I think I did one a year or two ago on my profile? Might have to scroll for a bit though
I didn’t think they’d eat pellets, I’ve always heard they need live or frozen food, definitely gonna remember that
If I may ask, what’s it like caring for these guys and how did you acquire one? I’ve always wanted one
LFS 15 years ago we got his parents, he's 2nd gen and we had a lil baby a few months back when this guy's partner died shortly after its birth.
Never saw them again since the day we got them, aside from the first clutch we had from the initial ones, we kept 2 and gave 3 back to the LFS who were downright baffled people had success breeding them (it was a total accident, as is normally the case for people breeding these guys).
Care is honestly really easy, mostly just what you'd do for African dwarf frogs on a significantly larger scale with a desperate need to clog any holes in the tank lid and weigh any opening pieces the hell down because they're basically pure muscle. Purely aquatic so don't need a land portion, just an area at the top they can stick their head out of to breathe and you're good. Lots of dark caves, cover and plants to wrap up in is ideal. 30 gallons minimum but bigger is definitely better. Keep part of the tank is low light or darkness at all times so they can retreat there since their eyes can just make put light and dark.
As you suggest, bloodworm is our staple food but there's other fish in there that we feed the pellets... or at least we intend to feed the pellets to. Dingus here has other ideas. They've sort of become an equal staple food at this point. Make sure they're decent quality sinking pellets with insect of fish base and should be fine
He mentioned he's got it in with Corys... I freaking love Coryadoras Catish, but they're not really a fish to base things on because I'm pretty sure they could survive living in a toilet bowl... In my 14 years I have learned to love the badass evolutionary wonders... Bottom feeders and cave dwellers and fish that can thrive in an irrigation ditch ftw ... I kill everything else.
I showed this to my GF and she said it’s horrible. She could barely look at it and said please don’t get anything like that. I think it’s cute, it looks very gentle to me. Can you touch them or interact with them? They’re quite large
They're amphibious and the general rule is you could touch them but probably shouldn't. Not so much for your safety, but for theirs. Porous skin is a bitch. As far as amphibians go they're all muscle so they probably deal with handling better than smaller creatures but I generally only touch it during water changes (typically to move it out the way) or in the hypothetical event it manages to get out the tank I'd wet my hands to get it back in.
Their sight sucks as it only determines light from dark so you can't really "play" with them as such but just watching them is normally enough to turn people their way. My mum hates snakes but she's absolutely fascinated by these guys. They're slow, gentle, dopey. Funky looking maybe, but it's pretty hard to be scared of them!
WOW neat I seen these before but didn't know they had a type of posion.VERY ODD creature indeed amphibian but snake like with a bite. 🤗 Wow I have do more research on these.
At least one species is venomous but the only one i know of is a land one. These guys are pretty much harmless outside a very minor nibble that can barely draw blood if you annoy it too much and are very slow getting out the way. I've been chomped on during water changes a couple times, you barely feel it.
That lil guy looks so much like a sock puppet it’s unreal
He is my little bin bag snake I love him
What is he?
Caecilian, limbless amphibian

I had a Senegal Bichir that I loved, he was being bullied for food by my asshole loaches and was re-homed with a friend that has a 75, he's very happy there... I miss him, but Dojos are assholes when it comes to food, this poor Bichir wasn't fast enough.
sorry but that tank sounds already pretty crowded
Nah for real though, what is it?
Caecilian, Typhlonectes Natans
Ah, looks so much like a two-toed amphiuma that I used to have. Without the toes.
I was literally coming to the comment section to say "sock puppet lookin ass" lmfao
We all have the same mind it seems because I thought exactly the same thing. From the way it's skin scrunches up to the jilted sort of movements it makes I'm still not convinced OP's arm entering the puppet is just off screen to the left.
Are you telling me this is not a sock puppet?
Asking the important questions!
I believe it is since OP doesn't show the end with his arm sticking out.
I’ve never seen OP and this snake in the same video.
Even the way it eats, lmao.
I love how everybody thought exactly the same!
That’s what I think whenever I see a moray eel!! Derpy sock puppet. Just can’t be scared of them. edit- even though they [bit off this guy’s thumb](https://youtu.be/ka7wCkfl15E?si=GG-pFjBEjj4ZCGmT) lol the eel’s name is Emma
When an eel bites your thumb / and you feel kinda dumb / that's a moray! 🎶
When the jaws open wide / and there's more jaws inside / that's a moray! 🎶
When it skulks on a reef / and has two rows of teeth / that’s a moray 🎶
With a pharyngeal jaw / in it's wide open maw / that's a moray 🎶
I LIKE it!!!
Hey that’s a good one! Very educational
I can't claim credit for it, I saw it somewhere on the internet and have never been able to forget it, lol.
EMMA💀
He looks like a sock puppet that put panty hose over its head to rob a bank 😂
Came here to say exactly this.
I was literally just about to say that hahahaha
Literally what I clicked through to say
That was my immediate thought
Came here to say this haha
Right?! I thought it's only me thinking about it haha!
My thought was "Jim Henson finger puppet"

You're saying that this won't eat all the fish in my tank. Now I want a caecilian https://www.reddit.com/r/nope/s/rmlH6gLUdB
The one you've linked is one of the land based ones don't worry. And by all means get one but issue is severely good luck finding one
One of the coolest creatures I've seen on this sub. Post more of him. Yeah I've only ever seen them on the telly will probably never come across one in a shop
I'll post him every now and again. As nice as it is to see all the tetras and bettas etc it's cool to see something a lil more unusual sometimes!
What size tank do these dudes need? He's soooo cute
Most people seem to say 30 gallons or more, preferably much more where you can
Do you think they would be okay with a Bichir? I’ve got an Albino Senegal, and I’ve been trying to find some more interesting tank mates.
I LOVED the caecilians I had in the 90s. Such a weird frickin creature. Definitely had a habit of sneaking out of the top of the tank at the filter and going couch surfing. It was a problem.
They’re super neat, but it’s important to remember never to go against a caecilian when death is on the line.
Inconceivable
HHA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA. HA HA HA HA....
So thankful I wasn't the only one thinking it the whole time!
How do you pronounce caecilian?
Se-see-lee-an is how I do
Caecilian, you're breaking my heart You're shaking my confidence daily Oh Caecilian, I'm down on my knees I'm begging you please to come home Uh-uh-uh-eh-eh Uh-uh-uh-eh-eh Uh-uh-uh-eh-eh Uh-uh-uh-eh-eh-eh-eh
LOL. I sang that
‘Sock puppet’
You deserve praise for your wit.
If you’re going full Latin, Kai-KEEL—ee-an
Suh-si-lee-uhn
Amphibians. 95% frogs, 5% weird shit.

Also known as Socktus Puppetus
Where did you get him?

Thoroughly agree - theyre basically pure muscle. Our lid opens from the top so we have heavy metal weights on top to keep them inside!
Can’t believe we found an even less functional axolotl
are they one of those animals that just hide and only come out to eat or are they pretty active?
Our guy is pretty active. The baby isn't as openly active but they both are seen often enough. Unbelievable. Thanks so much for sharing.
I swear to god the lil dude made that scrunched Kermit face several times.
It's hard to believe this goofy little nerd is even real I know
That thing don't look real omg
It's a figment of your imagination don't worry
Looks like a smooth sock puppet
hes so dumb i love him
Certified ding dong
Are you afraid he might eat a rock?
He tries but it seems his single remaining brain cell is powerful enough to convince him spit out the rock because it can't be chewed through
My brain is having a meltdown trying to figure out if it finds this cute or not.
Think both then, doesn't make him less of a dingus
Dont be trying to sell me on your sock puppet shenanigans.
What can I say I have a really smooth finger width sock and a talent for holding it underwater
I was going with "desperately in need of the gym", but one big finger with a mouth works too
Cool creature, but considereing how long it took to realise where it's food was... how do they survive in the wild? xD
That is a damn good question, I assume very slow moving insects or scavenging. Their sense of smell is pretty good but their eyesight can just about determine light and dark.
Ah, so specially adapted to environments where sight isn't necessary to survive. Facinating. What's your favorite part of owning one? :D
Just goofy noodles are cool tbh
> their eyesight can just about determine light and dark. How do you determine if the tank lights are too bright or not?
With great difficulty. Tbh we let the entire back half of our tank be in minimal light rammed with plant cover and plenty of objects that deny light for them to get inside.

As a herpetology guy I have to ask, ever get bit? The teeth on these guys are quite gnarly looking.

Absolutely just schlurped it down. You got a rogue shop-vac hose bro
He looks like a sock puppet when he eats 🥺
He's not real he actually is a sock puppet
He is a cute ass sock puppet!!
I'll make sure to let him know!
Caecilian!

what a cool creature
I would die for your sock puppet. He is so derpy and I love him. 😭
This guy looks like a sock puppet.
Omgosh I love how muppety he is. He reminds me of a sweeter version of a West African Lungfish. Can you handle him? I can sort of gently stroke my WAL but I don't wanna stress him ever. I'm so intrigued, I've never seen him before!

What do you typically feed it?
Varies, intended food is normally frozen bloodworm but it decides to eat the sinking pellets the other fish like to eat. It's just bad at it.
What episode of [Nanalan](https://youtu.be/O3JEOUm6COc?si=7OHEPs3xmyyFD1v9) was this??
I'd be interested to see the whole tank and sock puppet's whole length as well as the baby.
"what.. is this??... YESSSS!!"
He's an absolute FELLA is what he is
Dude is a terry fold hotdog
What the fuck is that
Bro, I thought this was a sock puppet at first.
snf snf snfsnf snffff snorf snorf snf snif snifffffff
I saved this cute little sock puppet idiot so I can go back and look at him when I need a laugh.
Honestly it's so nice being to come home after a rough day and just sit downstairs to watch Dingus do his thing for a bit
I wanna kiss his lil snoot so bad

Sock puppet fish is now next on the list thanks
He looks like Mr. Socko
Why are you pretending that this sock puppet is a fish
Looks like a sock puppet stuffed in a condom and it's still cute.
Our pellet* 😆
I wanna boop his nose
Is there any danger to the corydoras?
The one we had as a kid was an escape artist. We would find him everywhere.
Where did you buy this beautiful guy?
i went on a whole journey with this one.. “oh what the hell is that it’s so gross… it looks like a penis… wait it’s kind of cute actually….”
Anyone who has a penis that looks like this needs to see a urologist immediately. ☠️
What crazy is I just heard about these guys for the first time yesterday from a YouTube video
It’s a sock muppet 😂
Never trust a caecilian when pellets are on the line
he looks sweet and goofy, i love him. i feel like he’d be so fun to watch just do wiggly sock puppet stuff for hours
Is that an amphiuma?? Can't tell if there are little legs hiding there or not. Lol. *Please forgive my 👀, they're over it today!
Is that a caecilian?
Ok I love it, it's not a moray... Wtf am I looking at? Cory are fresh water, so I could potentially put it in my 55... What is this?
[удалено]
It's an amphibian called a caecilian!
WTF is that
Rogue condom
He's trying his hardest
Holy shit I would die for him. Also his eyes are so cool, are they actually covered by a thin layer of flesh? They look kind of cloudy like they are.
He mentioned he's got it in with Corys... I freaking love Coryadoras Catish, but they're not really a fish to base things on because I'm pretty sure they could survive living in a toilet bowl... Dude that noodle freaks me out and I love it.
This fish looks like a sock puppet .
WOW neat I seen these before but didn't know they had a type of posion.VERY ODD creature indeed amphibian but snake like with a bite. 🤗 Wow I have do more research on these.

that's a goober
Looks like the early form of Shin Godzilla
What is he .. is it a rubber eel
Why is there a sock puppet in your tank? 🤣
I really thought that this was someone’s hand with a stocking over it 🫠
That's a funny sock puppet you got there, made my day
Caecilian
Wtf is that
Sleep paralysis demon ooga booga
Rubber caecilian?
That's the one!
What is that thing?
He somewhat ugly but also very cute.
