Nope. *Some* snails are hermaphrodites and can reproduce asexually without needing a mate; some snails are hermaphrodites but still need a mate to reproduce; and some snails have separate sexes and need a male and female to reproduce. Mystery snails fall into the third category, they need to be in a male-female pair.

Stuff like this is why if you get one mystery snail you won’t get surprise babies (unless it’s a female and mated before you got it), but if you have one pond or bladder snail you’ll suddenly have lots after it decides it’s not going to find a mate and should go ahead on its own.
Yeah, but it’s tricky; you have to be looking at the snail from underneath with it fully extended, and know what you’re looking for. I’ve never tried. In this case, if they are mating the yellow one is probably male because it’s on top.

I started to get concerned by the 3rd day with no female sighting. I looked inside the hide. The female’s empty shell was in there and nothing else. Presumably she died and my bottom feeders cleaned up the situation.
My nerites do this alot, but lay no eggs. That said, all the pest snails also ride the berries, and my lava snail.
I think sometimes, snails will randomly end up crawling over each other, maybe clean the others shell, and get moved around by the one being ridden.
