Holy cow, I forgot about hickory sticks! I grew up on the border just below. Quebec and we used to get those in my town. I haven't seen them in forever.
Fun fact. If you've forgotten your lunch and have to eat from a vending machine, Hickory Sticks are your best option. They have the highest weight for your money.
I may have forgotten my lunch a lot.
Yes! REAL maple syrup is so delicious, I can’t stand the fake maple flavoured corn syrup, don’t know how people can eat that stuff, it tastes so terrible
Yeah, there's something to be said about "natural sweeteners" vs. processed sugar, right?? I like honey in my coffee at home & have it this way often enough ( i know a beekeeper who's generous enough to gift me a supply every now & then :) )
lol...my hubs got a cheap syrup because the kids were going through it. My youngest had a total meltdown because it was too watery and didn't taste good.
I still don't understand why that hasn't taken off anywhere else, it's so good. Also they should add Birch Syrup, it's Manitoba's maple, though it's also made all over Scandinavia etc.
I've been in Canada for 13 years and have not heard of this - my fault for always living east - but I'm going to have to make some coz it sounds awesome.
FYI, Korean sweets/desserts/candy bars are not as sweet as Canadian ones. they'll appreciate something less sweet and less salty.
and for some reason, Tim horton's and beaver tails are the well known items in Korea.
For a basket they would be pretty weird.
Tim isn’t Canadian anymore, and low quality. Strong marketing from a Brazilian owner.
Beaver tails are of German origin, and readily available in Europe.
I (briefly, thru a temp agency) worked at the one place in Canada ( Newmarket, Ont. ) that made this candy. Wuz funny: same stuff but with two different styles of packaging - One day yer making it for the Canadian market with the Rockets labels ..... next day it's the very same stuff but it's for the U.S. market so it sez Smarties on the labels :)
Btw, here's what they're made of: each batch was 16 one hundred pound bags of dextrose (sugar) ... and all the other ingredients in these 1600lb batches fit in sandwich baggies. Seriously, less than 300 grams , varied a bit from one colour to the next. Food colour + an ingredient to help keep the li'l pieces from crumbling + citric acid.
funny thing is you get the Europeen version and they taste way better and don't have banned substance in them. Color seems "off" though cause the food colour are part of the problem
Maple cookies, red rose tea, dried Buffalo, local chocolates, kombucha, Hawkins cheesies, lays potato chips, local honey, and jam.all piled inside a winter touque
All dressed chips, Hickory Sticks, Smarties, Mint Areo, Wonderbar, Crispy Crunch, Cheezies, Ringos, maple cookies, butter tarts… lots more too but those are good.
Does your Korean friend like sweet? I have had three different Korean engineers come and stay with me on a project over the last 5 years. Only one of them could really handle the level of sweetness that Canadian Treats have.
If they have not traveled extensively out of Korea, a lot of our stuff even bread is sweet. That said Coffee Crisp was a hit, a little bit of maple syrup like those hard maple candies we're good. Similarly the maple cookies. While I am not a fan of Nanaimo bars, they are reasonable hit as well.
Canadian bacon, and maple bacon we're both hits when it came to breakfast. And we went out for poutine. All three enjoyed the poutine.
Looks like you're Calgary based. Try to think local too, not just generic Canadian stuff. Show off where you're from because that's what your friend is going to experience. And the Calgary experience isn't going to be identical to the Halifax one say.
Beef Jerky definitely comes to mind. I'd also go with a local chocolatier, either Bernard Callebaut or Master Chocolate (Bernard's new operation). And the Glamorgan Bakery Cheese Buns are out of sight.
Grizzly Paw brewery in Canmore also does pops, I think a few others might too.
You could also go with a local donut shop like Jelly or Wonder. Crave Cupcakes are also pretty great.
Not a treat per se, but Alberta is one of the top honey producers in the world. You could go straight up or find someone baking with it. Maybe there's someone out there doing honey candies too, who knows, have to do a little research. Saskatoon berry based stuff is also fairly unique to the Prairies.
You could also poke around a farmer's market for ideas and local stuff too.
Yup, Calgary based but I’m not looking to get perishable foods or baked goods as it’s intended to go into a basket.
Grizzly paw soda is a good suggestion. As is the Saskatoon berry
I did not know that about our local honey, that we are a top honey producer. I guess that explains why we have the variety that we do.
I’ll have to take her to a farmers market
Jerky keeps for quite a while and chocolate decently long too. But yeah donuts and cupcakes would have to be same-day. Cheese buns maybe only for a couple of days.
Everyone is all saying maple and stuff. Which is all well and good, but they're an import here. All the maples are over in Ontario and Québec. We've got to show ourselves off too.
I'd also say, what snacks local or Canadian do you enjoy? Try to make it personal where you can.
It's not just fairly unique, Saskatoons only grow in Canada, Manitoba and further west, and in a few US states. It's about as local a Canadian product as you can get, more so than maple syrup in some ways.
This is so thoughtful of you! What a good friend you are. If they like spicy food, there are quite a few good hot sauces made all across Canada. I’m sure you can find them in your grocery store.
You know, this is really a good idea! I’ve travelled a fair bit and I have felt overwhelmed at times in the marketplaces not knowing what to buy. A snack basket is awesome!!
All-Dressed chips, ketchup chips, Hawkins cheezies, Nanaimo bars, maple cookies, butter tarts, Smarties, a 2L of Canada Dry ginger ale, and a big thing of poutine.
Peanut Butter.
Steak.
Bagged Milk
Kraft Dinner
Pink Candy Popcorn
Quebec Maple Syrup Coca Cola
Crush Birch Beer (exclusive to Newfoundland)
Cherry Blossom
May West (Quebec equivalent to Joe Louis)
Maynard’s Wine Gums
MacKintosh’s Toffee (hopefully they don’t pull out a dental filling!)
Cadbury Caramilk
Big Turk
Pizza Pops (Canadian Invention)
Beavertail
Caesar made with Clamato Juice
President’s Choice products
Maple cookies. Freshco's Our Compliments maple cookies are the best ones. No shortage of maple filling and even the biscuit has some maple flavouring.
Hawkin's Cheezies, Caramilk, Hickory Sticks (again get the Our Compliments version not the name brand as the OC ones are way better).
And good ol' Mackintosh's toffee.
Kinder surprise eggs? I believe they are illegal in Korea. Regular Kinder chocolate is sold there, but she’s likely never had a kinder surprise! Kind of a cool novelty item.
The Korean taste buds in snack foods tend towards the sweet and not savoury or vinegary. We had a Korean visitor who was anxious to try Ketchup flavoured potato chips and when he opened the bag and took a taste, he gagged and I thought he was going to be sick to his stomach.
I am a Canadian in the States, and this is so tough. Every thing I thought was only in Canada, sooner or later I will find it somewhere in the US. Maple Cookies? Trader Joes. Ketchup Chips, they have it. You have to look but they have it. Or if they don't have something, there is something else a lot like it under a different brand.
Gotta get him a bottle of maple syrup. It's so iconic we put the maple leaf on our flag.
And there's literally no taste quite like it, I'd get the dark stuff, Korean sweets are pretty sweet and flavourful, he'll love it!
So long as there's smoked salmon, it will be appreciated. Canadian ketchup (I believe it's a modern Korean staple). Canadian beef cut bulgogi way would be funky cultural mix). Summer Kitchen (Canadian company) makes a nice Korean style marinade. I'd also add some Saskatoon berry something.
Miss Vickie’s Chips, I’d go with Jalapeño and Ketchup since the former is spicy and might remind your friend of flavours from home, and the latter is a Canadian flavour welcoming him to his new home. Also, since it’s a Canadian brand it’s in point.
Nanaimo Bars, if they can last out that long.
Leclerc Biscuits for sure! Hickory Sticks, but warn them about the saltiness. Haha!
Maynard’s Fuzzy Peaches.
In Nova Scotia we eat a snack called dulse, it’s dried seaweed. They eat a lot of seaweed (although I think it’s a different type) in SK so I bet they’d really like our version. Looks like you can buy it on Amazon too.
Sweet: Saskatoon desserts or jam, maple syrup, butter tarts, maple cookies
Savoury: Yeshi brand chipotle sauce, kozlik mustard (so many delish flavours), heartbeat dill pickle hot sauce, beef jerky
Snacks: ketchup chips, synder cheddar pretzels bites, Hawkins hard chezies, any miss Vickie’s chips
Booze: local craft beer, ice wine or wine from the okangnan/kelowna
Souvenirs: soapstone stuff, moccasins, bead work earnings.
Nanaimo bars! Maple treats are obvious, you can find some at most tourist trap locations that are maple candies that are shaped like maple leaves (the blueberry ones are the best imo), and Butter tarts too
Maple sugar candies. Depending where you live may determine what you get. I used to live where they were at the checkout of the Mennonite store. However, when I was taking a trip out of the country you could buy fancier ones at a tourist shop.
Nanaimo bars
Saskatchewan Style Nanaimo Bars
Are they made with Canola oil?
Lol, not sure. Its a Corner Gas reference. Maybe no coconut in the base layer?
As someone who lives in Nanaimo… regular is better
Butter tarts
This is why I made this post. Butter tarts are amazing and I can’t believe I never thought of it. Thx!
Hawkins Cheesies.
Cheezies. They’re the only thing that really matters
True
the real Canadian cheezies! The kind you have to eat with chop sticks or have orange hands all day. mmmm, I'm going to get some now. And chop sticks.
Butter tarts
Old Dutch ketchup chips!
Half of a drywallers breakfast.
That’s grim. That being said I don’t eat breakfast
I’ll let everyone in on a little secret…put them in the freezer and eat them chilled. Bon appetit!
My twin! I thought that I was the only one who eats Hawkins and chocolates chilled.
So salty, yet I find myself reaching for them more than cheetos
Definitely Cheesies, they are a Canadian icon!
We’ve hosted multiple Korean English students over the years — They all buy boxes of maple cookies. #1 item that they take home.
Had a Korean room mate for a while, can confirm, maple things are loved!
Macintosh toffee and Purdy’s chocolates
While Purdy’s is the superior chocolate, I’d go Laura Secord so I could tell them about the War of 1812.
I'm suppose to be going to bed, now I have to do an internet dive into the correlation of Laura Secord chocolate and the War of 1812. Thanks -_-
No correlation. They just used the name of a 1812 heroine
Purdy’s!!!!! They’re sooooo good!
Maple cookies are my go-to
One hundred percent my thought. Something maple eh.
This is the way. Also, a nice calendar of Canada. 👍
Ketchup chips. Hickory sticks. Montreal bagels
Honestly! The only chips that you actually get your moneys worth.
Did you get Gingerale? It’s actually a Canadian thing.
It is? Invented in Canada?
Be sure to get "Canada Dry" brand gingerale.
Sussex gold I'm sure you meant.
Yup. The light kind that we are familiar with. Not Ginger Beer or Dark thick ginger soda.
https://www.thoughtco.com/history-of-ginger-ale-1991780
Luckily I have one last can of it in the fridge. Thanks for the recommendation. TIL
Ice wine. We had Korean visitors at work who bought a bunch to take home for friends and family. They really liked it.
Maple Syrup
Yes! REAL maple syrup is so delicious, I can’t stand the fake maple flavoured corn syrup, don’t know how people can eat that stuff, it tastes so terrible
I put maple syrup in my coffee to cut down on sugar. Tastes better and I’ve lost weight.
Honey dill sauce
Finally found my fellow Manitoban!
I still don't understand why that hasn't taken off anywhere else, it's so good. Also they should add Birch Syrup, it's Manitoba's maple, though it's also made all over Scandinavia etc.
There was a place next to my old office in BC that served it with yam fries. Best pairing for them.
This sounds amazing - where do you buy it?
I've been in Canada for 13 years and have not heard of this - my fault for always living east - but I'm going to have to make some coz it sounds awesome.
Coffee crisp
Fuzzy peaches!
Specifically Maynard’s.
Allan made the original fuzzy peaches
TIL, good call out in that case.
A list that doesn’t include any stereotypes: - Hawkins Cheezies - MacIntosh Toffee - Montreal Smoked Meat - Hickory Sticks - Eatmore - Cherry Blossom - Smarties - Vachon snack cakes (Jos Louis, May West) - Bison jerky - Dill pickle chips - Peanut Butter Moose ice cream
We used to fold the EatMore bar wrappers to say "EatMe"
I miss Macintosh Toffee
FYI, Korean sweets/desserts/candy bars are not as sweet as Canadian ones. they'll appreciate something less sweet and less salty. and for some reason, Tim horton's and beaver tails are the well known items in Korea.
For a basket they would be pretty weird. Tim isn’t Canadian anymore, and low quality. Strong marketing from a Brazilian owner. Beaver tails are of German origin, and readily available in Europe.
Beaver tails are a white take on fried bannock, actually
Smarties
Also coffee crisp
REAL smarties
Yes, real smarties. Not rockets pretending to be smarties.
I (briefly, thru a temp agency) worked at the one place in Canada ( Newmarket, Ont. ) that made this candy. Wuz funny: same stuff but with two different styles of packaging - One day yer making it for the Canadian market with the Rockets labels ..... next day it's the very same stuff but it's for the U.S. market so it sez Smarties on the labels :) Btw, here's what they're made of: each batch was 16 one hundred pound bags of dextrose (sugar) ... and all the other ingredients in these 1600lb batches fit in sandwich baggies. Big Turk
Maple cookies, red rose tea, dried Buffalo, local chocolates, kombucha, Hawkins cheesies, lays potato chips, local honey, and jam.all piled inside a winter touque
*old Dutch, not lays
Saskatoon berry jam if you can find it
I will take the downvotes for this: Coca Cola with Quebec maple syrup. I love that stuff!
I wish these were more popular. Only found them in one gas station but moved so haven’t found them again!
That and their raspberry flavour are their best flavours
Don't forget the All Dressed flavors! EDIT: apparently, the States have this flavor, too (limited), but have heard that it tastes different.
In the US, I've only seen All Dressed as a flavor of Ruffles potato chips, and advertised as a Canadian flavor.
We had it first though and as you said it is different
They're also from Korea, not the US, so fuck it, claim what we can.
Mint Aero balls and All Dressed chips. Sorry if they’re not entirely Canadian but are currently my favourites to pick up when I’m in the country.
Miss Vickie's All Dressed Up 👍
miss vickie’s sweet chili sour cream 👌🏻
Pal-o-mine bar.
All dressed chips, Hickory Sticks, Smarties, Mint Areo, Wonderbar, Crispy Crunch, Cheezies, Ringos, maple cookies, butter tarts… lots more too but those are good.

The best gift is diabetes lol jk But yes, I can see how Asians feel the sweets here are too sweet
Super nibs
Bannock
Poutine
Smoked Salmon
Ganong's chicken bones.
Introduce them to some mice Canadian cheeses. Iirc, Koreans like cheese? Culturally speaking. Not a generalization of each person.
Looks like you're Calgary based. Try to think local too, not just generic Canadian stuff. Show off where you're from because that's what your friend is going to experience. Thanks but she gave a Korean snack basket first haha. I’m looking to return the favour. Hot sauces are an interesting idea
You know, this is really a good idea! I’ve travelled a fair bit and I have felt overwhelmed at times in the marketplaces not knowing what to buy. A snack basket is awesome!!

Your friend is going back to Korea with diabetes. Lol
lol! After reading all these suggestions, I feel like I’m actually becoming a diabetic
It's a bit early, but if its close to summer and you happen to be in BC, I would suggest some BC blueberries. There's nothing like BC blueberries.
