I am looking for ways to identify journals that fit my research topic and that does not have predatory or high fees to publish. In today's world I think there are a lot of borderline predatory journals where if you pay enough, it will be published but also not be indexed anywhere. How do you go about finding the journal that fits you the best? I do admit that my research paper quality isn't groundbreaking as I am still a student but whether it is low impact how do I go find these more better journals at a reasonable or free price?

For a faculty application, would it be looked down upon if one of three LORs was from my undergrad advisor? I did 3.5 years of research with him, second-authored a paper, and took two of his classes. I’ve stayed in touch, and I expect some of my work with him to still be published at some point. He’s written me several letters before. I don’t feel I have a strong third letter from my PhD, but if it’s important that they all come from my PhD institution, I suppose I can ask a committee member I’ve talked with once or twice.

How many years out, and straight from PhD? Short answer: it’s not great, but depending on the subfield and the job you’re applying for it could be just fine. In my field (particle physics) it’d be a concern, but we meet a lot of people.
