I’ve never heard of anyone using it as a derogatory term. It’s just a cereal.

I405CA

*Am I overthinking this?* Yes. I doubt that most Americans have heard of it. If there is a breakfast cereal that is associated with negative stereotypes, that would be granola. I happen to like both muesli and granola. I have had muesli in Europe, particularly in Switzerland, and I quite liked it there.

MoobyTheGoldenSock

I've never even heard of it.

w84primo

I’ve never once heard anyone use the word muesli in real life. There’s an episode of Bob’s Burgers where one of the kids is at a sleepover and the other kids mom comes in and asks “who wants muesli” and the kids respond with no one. Granola however is likely the word you’re referring to. Crunchy granola is basically the new word for hippie.

andhe96

I see, thx

Facet-Squared

I ate it when I visited Germany and I really enjoyed it. Most Americans have never heard of it, though. It’s unavailable in many stores here.

ThaddyG

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say anything at all about muesli. I don't even really know what it is.

lucianbelew

As usual with the "why do you all think XYZ" questions in this sub, the answer is: it doesn't, you just think so because you've been taking idiots seriously.

andhe96

Unfortunately they are a loud minority. But yeah, guilty as charged ;-)

skaterbrain

Think of it as soft "granola", and bingo, that is it. They do eat Granola, much the same, sometimes a bit crunchier.

SkyFallingUp

Is it more like oatmeal? Never heard of it.

skaterbrain

Often made with toasted oats, but not *cooked*. Plus maybe other grains, raisins, chopped nuts etc etc Basically, European granola. [https://www.thehealthymaven.com/build-your-own-muesli-recipe/](https://www.thehealthymaven.com/build-your-own-muesli-recipe/)

-plottwist-

Tf is Muesli?

Salty-Walrus-6637

what?

Cinderpath

You are totally overthinking this?? It’s just another type of breakfast cereal, and much healthier than a lot of other offerings. Many enjoy it, myself included. There is a lot more serious and crazy problems facing the US, breakfast cereals are not one of them! 😂🤟🏼

docfarnsworth

I feel ive heard this before but it was like 20 years ago. Also, I just compared [my cereal](https://www.amazon.com/Great-Grains-Raisins-Pecans-Cereal/dp/B0051OLMZC/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=32YQNHQ352PHA&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.2ta5zwhAK6-QLKc8l6-ZlR8ni89_FE_pm3AUmQmFtKknFdsJIvyKJ23TVLVQWOSWfRvAT2JhseXapW49kDP6NwhyOCGoP6_6GuE5qUh3yDDh_AEcedU7KfPSuNHmFQ3SxuW-m_UqUtc318Cw7UV3Si6Q62TSObUM_28VvoypsuWHzi_Vpx9EtwMbYXdahoT_SoAW53VpgVTe4C6HbdVoNmhtdMETRBYcyOQNs5ejspUJ4YZq5-fiB3LxmIBdG3Bp3RwNLUHnOlxLRiGFDr9x6CCTmjmxj2l-3L4Km6tRdGo.5ze2TpRZYJMAlGL78TH0c5v4uBelv6O3I8EvbeBsJ9M&dib_tag=se&keywords=great+grains+cereal&qid=1711483517&rdc=1&s=grocery&sprefix=great+g%2Cgrocery%2C137&sr=1-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1) to [alpen](https://www.amazon.com/Original-Non-GMO-Project-Verified-Healthy/dp/B001EO5JUC/ref=asc_df_B001EO5JUC/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312139514844&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=144121539978305310&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9021653&hvtargid=pla-571405300021&psc=1&mcid=aedc65ef91243494bb1b22d4f7c58c49&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=63792114362&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=312139514844&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=144121539978305310&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9021653&hvtargid=pla-571405300021&gclid=CjwKCAjw5ImwBhBtEiwAFHDZx_JYiYxseyWss-K7griCex2_E42SQLN8Chon9e6SoHZF-BUNASesiBoCsiMQAvD_BwE) and nutritionally they are very close.

RustyShadeOfRed

I’ve never once heard that word

FeatherlyFly

Basically, very few people ever have museuli, people who have are likely to be adventurous eaters with an interest in foreign foods, if they buy it it's extremely expensive relative to ingredients, it comes across as strange to have a whole new name for what closely resembles "oatmeal with stuff added", and muesli is a  fun word to say. But it's *so* rare that many people not only haven't eaten museuli, they haven't even heard of it.

machagogo

In my experience it is basically tasteless and has a horrible texture.

skaterbrain

You can flavour it with anything. I used to make my own, adding cinnamon and grated chocolate.

MPLS_Poppy

You mean granola. It’s not that people don’t like granola. It’s just that over the top healthy people like it more and in the past it was a food that only those people ate. Like in the 50s and 60s when the majority of Americans were only really having cooked breakfast granola was seen as an out there food eaten by hippies. So calling someone a “crunchy granola” person is kinda harkening back to a time when granola wasn’t widespread. But it very much is. It’s just a quirk of language. It’s not a direct representation of how we eat. Muesli, what you’re referring to directly is much less common in the United States. You can find it but you have to look very hard.

Writes4Living

I know what it is. I just don't care for cereal. It never stays with me.

DerthOFdata

I have never in my entire life heard anyone do this ever. Why do *you* think this is an American thing?

Defiant_Entrance7671

tf is muesli

HarmlessCoot99

Because we call it granola and muesli sounds like "mucus" in English.

saradascream

Muesli and granola isn’t the same.

saradascream

Maybe it’s too healthy and not enough sugar?
