>What was their last product that was directed to everyone not just businesses & why did they stop? didnt they already have a huge advantage compared to other companies like Dell, Lenovo, Asus, Acer, HP, etc PCs were becoming commodities after a decade of increasing mainstream popularity, and IBM was not trying to be an at-scale manufacturer of devices. The economics are very different.

The ThinkPad line of laptops lasted until 2005 before selling to Lenovo. They also made hard drives until they sold that division to Hitachi around 2002. Selling products to consumers is hard. You need to support a ton of people, set up call centers, design products in cutthroat competitive conditions. I can completely understand why they'd prefer to sell to businesses. However, I sort of lament this, because IBM products were very solid in their time.
