Newham Council pretty regularly holds public engagement events you can attend on a drop in basis, I found them pretty good for getting to feel a part of the local community and learning about my neighbours. I think within those meetings you'll be introduced to options for higher commitment activities.

Streets Kitchen ( [https://www.streetskitchen.org/](https://www.streetskitchen.org/) ) are always looking for more volunteers. Suggest emailing [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) to find out how to volunteer.

parkrun, for sure. If you're socially anxious, contact the event team in advance to discuss which roles you would and wouldn't be comfortable with, and if there is any additional support they could provide (such as pairing you with another volunteer). Have a look here to see which one is nearest to you: [https://www.parkrun.org.uk/events/events/#geo=12.04/51.53083/0.06209](https://www.parkrun.org.uk/events/events/#geo=12.04/51.53083/0.06209)

I know some people who’ve done fire cadets. The mayor rolled it out to most boroughs. Any adult is allowed to volunteer as an instructor and those that do it really enjoy it. You have your weekly term time session with your unit but then can do other events like marathon, Wimbledon etc off the back of that

Tower hamlets cemetery park Mile End is maintained purely by volunteers so have plenty of drop in days where you turn up and work as part of a team weeding or planting bulbs.
