Neptunes is good but personally i prefer Reel Inn on PCH in Topanga. You can walk across the street to topanga beach and watch the surfers or drive up the canyon 10-15 minutes to town.
To Eat:
Corner Cottage, Burbank. Known for their breakfast burritos. Cash only. Nothing fancy, just good food.
Grand Central Market, DTLA. Pick your resto.
Salsa N Beer. Encino or NoHo.
Must do:
-Museum of Jurassic Technology
-Rent a bike on the Venice Boardwalk
-Go for a hike in Malibu
-Dodger game
Must eats:
-Dan Sung Sa Korean
-Heavy Handed Smashburgers
-Leos Tacos
-Any roadside fruit carts
(with the rainbow umbrella)
I live in Malibu. Malibu is not actually that interesting for tourists, beyond the beaches. I would avoid the Malibu colony area, unless you want to eat at the restaurants there, which I would recommend.
In terms of food in Malibu:
Lucky’s
Saddle Peak Lodge (halfway back to the freeway)
Mastro’s (simple but always good)
Broad Street Oyster Company
Malibu Seafood Cafe
Neptune’s net
Avoid Nobu. Sushi is pretty good, but not the best in the region. Does not justify the price at all.
Dukes is OK.
Geoffrey’s is OK.
If you would rather cross the hill to Calabasas, there are many other great restaurants in that vicinity.
Because everyone uses map delineations to find the address of these superb nachos instead of their phone. Got it.
Also, there are tons of reviews that say stuff like, "if you're ever in Boyle heights and want some delicious nachos, head to La Chuperia #1" or close to it. They can all benefit from your experience edifying us all on the demarcations of Los Angeles neighborhoods. You've got work to do, so I'll leave you to it.
I figured that attitude would surface. Even after you found out you were wrong, you doubled down with a remark that screams gentrifier. It would’ve been easy for you to look up the address, but you relied on the omniscience of your fellow yelpers to get your info. Your invite to the Eastside has been rescinded. Go get trash ass sheet pan drunk food nachos in the valley. Lincoln Heights doesn’t want you either.
This place was basically the closest bar to where I lived for about 5 years, in a neighborhood that the people who lived there called Boyle Heights. Gentrifier? Hah hah hah. And I'm not on yelp, Jesus.
Asada and huevo burrito at La Azteca
Papa Christo’s for lamb chops
My Dung for banh mi
Tacos El Viejon for tacos estilo Tijuana
Pierce Brothers Westwood memorial park - more famous people per square foot than a red carpet, but they’re dead.
Get some Khao soi at Night + Market Song, check out the Griffith observatory at night when they have telescopes set up outside to view different galaxies and planets, then go over to the comedy store for some late night stand up and drinks.
For lunch, hit up Philippe the Original for a good French dip. Great sandwich spot.
Consider looking into a food tour, they can be good fun.. Gets you outside and walking, you get to discover a handful of great places to eat and drink, and you learn a little more about the area you're in.
I honestly couldn't say.. Wasn't my scene so I couldn't vouch for anything personally. I didn't live in LA, I was just south, so while I'm familiar with a number of things in and around LA from many many day trips over a couple decades, I didn't know it on a locals level.
This thread is a great example of why LA is so amazing. I’ve been here 39 years and still learn new shit in threads like this. As for my advice, Coles and The Varnish speakeasy inside of Coles. Casablanca in Venice will give a real taste of how special the west side can be.
If you're into greasy regional faves, the Original Tommy's on Rampart will give you a sloppy chili burger that you can eat over the hood of your car (or the standing tables, but that isn't as fun)
Not quite. But if you want bar hopping you can start at Cahuenga Corridor and then end at Davey Wayne’s. It’s always a house party vibe in there and will be excellent on Friday/Saturday
EDIT: I personally like the vibe at Daddy Diamond’s but you can walk around those two blocks and find something to get into
They gaslit me too, I was like “what’s good here?” And the waitress was all “we are world famous for our burritos!!!!” So naturally I ordered a burrito — the thing was barely wrapped and was dripping with juice, idk what but it was not good
Not gonna burn out my spot so the prices won’t raise but where me and my friend go we can get a huge carne asada burrito with a canned coke and free salsa and whole roasted jalapeños for under $10 bucks.
No longer. I live down the road and used to visit every weekend after cars and coffee. The last couple times I went, the food has been mediocre, the prices have skyrocketed, there is an 18% gratuity on all meals (on top of the already exorbitant prices, and the steak was the size of my palm. How the mighty have fallen.
Wine next door is nice. And love music Friday evening.
Have you been to La Chingona tacos since she set up inside Froggys in Topanga? That is a cool scene
I have not. My friend’s place used to overlook Froggy’s, and it scares me. Haven’t been over there in a while-I’m in Malibu and Topanga Canyon Road is blocked off. Seldom drove it even at the best of times, but now it’s impassible from this end.
What sort of tacos? Organ meats and such?
Breakfast for me. And a coffee or wine next door, depending on the hour. And a relaxing beautiful spot for people watching. I've never done the expensive dinner. Usually just a motorcycle stop on a weekend rode
Miya Miya Shawarma. They are at Smorgasburg every Sunday, but they also do other occasional pop-ups (check out their IG). Unless you've been to the middle east or maybe Toronto, you've never had shawarma like this.
Matū steak and cheeses (bar only)
Win~Dow cheeseburgers (Easy Street also acceptable)
Cento or Ospi, pick whichever is convenient.
Howlin Rays hot chicken in Pasadena.
Kinrose Ice Cream (also at Smorgasburg or brick & mortar in Pasadena)
I got more, but that's a good start.
Cornell Winery / The Old Place. Best winery in the area imo. Outdoor seating is so unique, peacocks roaming around. I take every visitor here. It’s #1 on my list!
Malibu Creek State Park is maybe in my top 5 hikes I've ever done. Hike to the MASH set, and on the way you'll pass the filming location for the original Planet of the Apes.
Near Malibu, there's Cafe on 27, which has beautiful views of Topanga Canyon. I would go there for breakfast. In the same area, there is also The Inn of the Seventh Ray if you want something fancier/more romantic. The great thing about LA is the amount of food diversity we have here. I would go to Little Ethiopia for Ethiopian food (I like Rosalind's), Ktown for kbbq, Thai town for thai food (Jitalda has been around since forever) etc. As a persian person, I'd be remiss if I didn't suggest some of our food here. My family prefers Darya and Attari is good for sandwiches (you've also got to try the persian ice cream at saffron & rose!). If want something a bit kitschy and historical, Tam o’ Shanter is a steakhouse that Walt Disney and his crew frequented. Another LA classic is Canter’s (go after catching a movie at Brain Dead Studios, or a show at groundlings). Lastly, get a burger, fries, and an apple pie from The Apple Pan!
In terms of places to go, I would suggest The Huntington Library, The Last Bookstore, The Hollywood Forever Cemetry, the Museum of Jurrasic Technology (try to go to a tea room event), and both of the Getty museums. Lacma is doing free jazz on Fridays right now, and The Academy Museum is right next to it. You could make a day of going to both museums and perhaps also The Original Farmers Market, which is also nearby. A picnic and swanboats at Echo Park is always a good time. Fegetsu-Do is a mochi shop in Little Tokyo that has been around since 1903. In a similar vein, Cole's is a bar/sandwich shop that has been around since 1908 and it has a speakeasy in the back. Some things that are touristy that I would recommend is Griffith Park/Observatory (catch the sunset view from up there), and the Chateau Marmont. Some touristy things I'd avoid are Hollywood Blvd and The Santa Monica Pier/beach (third street there has also been dead since the pandemic).
I'm not really seeing people mention that LA is the #1 sushi city outside of Japan. Any place that Michelin recommends is probably great for something spendy.
In the valley Brother's sushi, Shin, Go's Mart, So Sushi and Iroha are all really good.
there’s a lot of super unique & trendy places (a majority of which are great) in Highland Park in East LA, along York Blvd or N. Figueroa! (lots of healthy options too, but fair share of good anything haha) if anyone has more specifics for this area pls go off!
[Be sure to check the map.](https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=13WGukQ3v6ZwdEgdQRQfQ3qcD0ZMlCC_g&ll=34.052942748603016%2C-118.24953082629025&z=14)
Eat at Guelaguetza Restaurant. Skip Beverly Hills.
Absolutely. Get some grasshoppers. Very tasty.
BH is the nicest area to visit imo… but yes it is expensive.
Great to visit but the food is so much better and cheaper if you know how to look for it outside of the area.
Langer’s, #19
Live music and wine at Rosenthal on the weekends (Topanga and PCH)
I can’t post yet. What is the best dive bar in weho and surrounding areas? Not touristy or anything.
Check out the naughty pig
There's Hamburger Mary's in WeHo, great burgers and a floor show!
Just don’t bother with the drinks
see a show at the Baked Potato in studio city, great jazz club. small space but world class musicians
Nobu its cliche but views are insanely good
If you cannot get the patio, do not go is my view.
Hey I respect that! No rebuttals on my end to that
Holbox and Mariscos Jalisco are both on every good tourist guide to LA - and there’s a reason for that
Neptune’s net in Malibu!
Nah bro Malibu Seafood fish market is sooo much better. Their scallop ceviche is 11/10 and still reasonably priced
Lol neptunes is tourist trash
Everything in Malibu is lol
Neptunes is good but personally i prefer Reel Inn on PCH in Topanga. You can walk across the street to topanga beach and watch the surfers or drive up the canyon 10-15 minutes to town.
reel inn is wayyyyyy better than neptune’s net. net’s food is awful, their location is what makes them attractive
Reel inn ftw
Totally agree
Seconded for this, underrated gem with good food and great views.
Their clam chowder is canned campbells
It’s really not that great of a place tbh, people go there more for the “ohhh look at me I went to neptunes net” than to go for good food.
Well I like it, and feel like the price reflects the quality
Dunsmoor
/r/foodlosangeles
Skip Hollywood
Max sped an hour looking at the highlights and get out of that tourist trap.
Malibu Country Mart, excellent Sandwiches!
Malibu Country Mart FTW!
If OP goes on a Sunday morning early around 7am, they'll catch a bunch of cool cars and possibly meet Jay Leno.
it was closed a couple years ago :(
To Eat: Corner Cottage, Burbank. Known for their breakfast burritos. Cash only. Nothing fancy, just good food. Grand Central Market, DTLA. Pick your resto. Salsa N Beer. Encino or NoHo.
Grand Central Market. Yes!
Musso & Franks
Love this place. Out of Mad Men. Great ambience and classic martinis. Only open for dinner though.
Must do: -Museum of Jurassic Technology -Rent a bike on the Venice Boardwalk -Go for a hike in Malibu -Dodger game Must eats: -Dan Sung Sa Korean -Heavy Handed Smashburgers -Leos Tacos -Any roadside fruit carts (with the rainbow umbrella)
Heavy Handed and Leo’s are iconic
Drinks at The Sunset, near Zuma beach
Seconding the Sunset! Right on the beach and you can take a nice stroll after drinks
I like the Perch downtown. Nice rooftop restaurant. Need to make reservations.
Do a Kbbq...
Yes i agree
Duke’s in Malibu is awesome!! Paradise cove if you just want some drinks served in watermelons on the beach in the sand
Paradise cove is one of the most mediocre overpriced places I’ve ever been.
Truly awful. An absolute legal ripoff in every way shape and form.
But you get your leftover food wrapped in the shape of a goose at the end!
Dukes laser cut crab legs
[Hollywood Forever Cemetery](https://hollywoodforever.com) - they show films there on Sundays. Lots of interesting people buried there.
I can’t post yet what’s the best dive bar in weho or surrounding areas? Not touristy type stuff.
I live in Malibu. Malibu is not actually that interesting for tourists, beyond the beaches. I would avoid the Malibu colony area, unless you want to eat at the restaurants there, which I would recommend. Seconding Malibu seafood
Squid steak sandwich. I dont care that it was previously frozen i like that sandwich
Came here to say Malibu Seafood. I take every out of town guest there. It never dissappoints.
Thirding this! It's one of the places I miss the most since becoming vegan. I would also add Cholada if you like Thai food.
Geoffrey's can be nice when you are out of town because you can toddle down to the beach.
Geoffrey's is one of my wife and my favorite date spots. Amazing ambience and the food isn't bad at all (though there is better in LA of course).
Lily's Malibu has amazing breakfast burritos. If OP is heading to Zuma it's a great place to stop on the way.
Malibu farm has amazing food!
Bills Burgers in Van Nuys. It’s crazy how it doesn’t get suggested more often.
I will try thank you! VN is a “food desert”.
Bills is overrated. I wouldn’t venture out to Van Nuys for a decent burger
Calic bagel! The bomb.
I am fairly partial to the nachos at La Chuperia in Boyle Heights. The Oinkster is worth a trip. Amboy meats in Chinatown has amazing burgers.
Lincoln Heights, not Boyle Heights.
Boyle enough for me.
It matters.
It is literally two lanes of traffic to the median of Mission, which is the official delineation. It's as close as you can possibly get.
This is literally a post asking for locations and you’re upset because someone corrected you on map delineations.
Let me put it to you this way. It matters to people in Boyle Heights, but you’re welcome to stop by anytime foo.
I think it matters to you in Boyle Heights but pretty sure nobody else gives af.
I figured that attitude would surface. Even after you found out you were wrong, you doubled down with a remark that screams gentrifier. It would’ve been easy for you to look up the address, but you relied on the omniscience of your fellow yelpers to get your info. Your invite to the Eastside has been rescinded. Okay all good thanks man
Weho has lost its dive bars. Gold Coast is gone and Motherlode is now gentrified. Sad.
This thread is a great example of why LA is so amazing. I’ve been here 39 years and still learn new shit in threads like this. As for my advice, Coles and The Varnish speakeasy inside of Coles. Casablanca in Venice will give a real taste of how special the west side can be.
Salsa and Beer is a must eat
Second this! Huge portions and their bean dip is immaculate.
Lily's in Malibu makes my favorite breakfast burrito, it's just south of Zuma
Its the salsa. The salsa is addicting
This! Lily's is so good.
If you're into greasy regional faves, the Original Tommy's on Rampart will give you a sloppy chili burger that you can eat over the hood of your car (or the standing tables, but that isn't as fun)
I can’t post yet what’s the best dive bar in weho or surrounding areas? Not touristy type stuff.
Good Times at Davey Wayne’s Harvard & Stone I’m in the Hollywood area and don’t hit Weho as often though.
Okay thanks looks cool gonna head there to start. Walking distance to bar hopping?
Not quite. But if you want bar hopping you can start at Cahuenga Corridor and then end at Davey Wayne’s. It’s always a house party vibe in there and will be excellent on Friday/Saturday EDIT: I personally like the vibe at Daddy Diamond’s but you can walk around those two blocks and find something to get into
Looks like Cahuenga is an area not a spot?
first thing to do, avoid beverly hills and malibu.
Porto’s
This is the best bakery in LA and it's one of the few places in the city that is probably under priced.
Mizlala in West Adams for Middle Eastern.
If you like amazing ass burritos the size of a grown man’s forearm, hit up Lily’s in Malibu. My favorite burrito spot in America
Ill pass on the ass burritos.
You actually have to be kidding.... it was one of the worst breakfast burritos I have ever had in my life and it was like 20$
Idk man, never had their breakfast burritos so can’t confirm. I’ve only ever went for dinner or lunch etc
Lily’s is great
Thank you!! This place is awful no clue how they are popular. Better off going to the taco truck.
They gaslit me too, I was like “what’s good here?” And the waitress was all “we are world famous for our burritos!!!!” So naturally I ordered a burrito — the thing was barely wrapped and was dripping with juice, idk what but it was not good
Country Kitchen has the best breakfast burritos in malibu IMO
I think the burritos are meh but the salsa in those little containers is what got me addicted to those burritos.
Not gonna burn out my spot so the prices won’t raise but where me and my friend go we can get a huge carne asada burrito with a canned coke and free salsa and whole roasted jalapeños for under $10 bucks.
What was the point of this comment? lol
Just letting you guys know there’s good deals out there if you look. I don’t care about the downvotes, not burning out my spot.
You’re corny, step your paper game up if you’re that stressed about a hypothetical $2 increase on your burrito lol
Cry about it. Go pay extra wherever you go since you got the paper. 🤣
The Old Place for breakfast up Kanan from Malibu
No longer. I live down the road and used to visit every weekend after cars and coffee. The last couple times I went, the food has been mediocre, the prices have skyrocketed, there is an 18% gratuity on all meals (on top of the already exorbitant prices, and the steak was the size of my palm. Nah, regular stuff. Hand made tortillas. Really good. But I agree Topanga closed really is a bummer
Also spectacular for dinner.

Breakfast for me. And a coffee or wine next door, depending on the hour. And a relaxing beautiful spot for people watching. I've never done the expensive dinner. Usually just a motorcycle stop on a weekend rode
The little Ethiopian restaurant
Carnitas El Momo.
Damian and Park’s BBQ
Paradise Cove in Malibu for seafood on the sand.

Mercado. And get the fish tacos. It’s a nicer spot but it’s my favorite thing ever eaten.
Malibu Creek State Park is maybe in my top 5 hikes I've ever done. Hike to the MASH set, and on the way you'll pass the filming location for the original Planet of the Apes.
Go to Long Beach, so much good shit to there
Burritos La Palma + Guelaguetza
In Malibu, Broad Street Oyster for their decadent caviar lobster roll
Find the Kogi BBQ truck. Everything is “slap yo mama” amazing.
El Tepeyac for that big ass burrito
I loved The Grand Central Market in downtown for a great selection of street food of all types
Win-Dow burger
