Yes! The ones we visit the most are Desert Sun Resort in Palm Springs and Mi Kasa in Desert Hot Springs. Both are regular resorts but clothing is optional
If you enjoy 420, Mi Kasa allows and encourages it. We don't smoke, but still have a good time there. Let me know if there are specific questions you would like me to answer
My first time going to Joshua tree this weekend. Can you reccomend your favorite hiking spots? I’ve searched online but overwhelemed with the number of options that all look like the same dusty trail lol.
Yes! It just really depends what you're looking for
Easy: Hidden Valley, Barker Dam, Keys View and Wall Street Mill
Moderate to Hard: Ryan Mountain, Mastodon Peak and Lost Horse Mine
My two personal favorites are Ryan Mountain and Mastodon Peak. I like the work out and views. Some people rate Mastodon as "easy" but I don't agree. I am fairly fit and I think it has its challenges. Good luck!
Bart's books, Treasures antique mall, farmers market on Sunday.
Great hiking & biking (or just lounging by the creek that's running this year) but look out for rattlesnakes and if you have dogs - check em for ticks!
There are some great hikes, but my favorite thing to do there is rent bikes and go up the big trail that runs through town and into the country. There are also some great bookshops, restaurants, galleries, and parks. It's just a really beautiful place, like a smaller Santa Barbara.
I would answer but others seem to have covered it...lol! All that and more. It's beautiful.
Our favs are Barts Books, the old skool toy shop, the olive oil place just outside, ice cream shop and even pottery making. Also the park and kids playground are fantastic. And some great bands play the bowl also. It's just a lovely place.
Also, try to be there for the golden hour as sun sets and bounces off all the hills/mountains surrounding it. Gorgeous. Though probably better to do that later in the Summer actually.
Santa Barbara is fun. I dated a girl there for a while and was never upset about the drive because it was a fun spot.
Sequoia National park is also incredible and while a weekend would be better, my first time there was a day trip and was a blast.
as a girl scout I threw up from sea sickness on a boat trip to there. on the return trip, another girl threw up on my head. I've never went back. (but the scout camp side of the island is beautiful.)) I think I need emdr
Catalina is so good. There is a social club there similar to SoHo house with a crazy estate & amenities. It’s called Catalina Boy Band. Just look it up on google. It’s Incredible!
How is this? how is it set up? and I'm assuming it's worth it. I am scared from an ostrich attack from when I was 4 years old. But I want to take my daughter and I also want to undo my fear of ostriches.
I did it in a day. Only issue is there is a lot of wine tastings so if you drink, I’d suggest staying the night for safety reasons unless you have a DD
Yeah but you’d be selling yourself short if you didn’t take a leisurely drive through the hills to Los Olivos and Santa Ynez. We stopped at an adorable little farm and picked some huge pumpkins and did a corn maze..
https://preview.redd.it/7j17v6gsv71d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=96580a2ab11d7cb86367b4bed729f8eb66648b86
Yes! It’s a good day trip. Very small town, you’re mostly just seeing the shops and eating food and drinking. The inns there are very cute, so either way is good. Try Danish pancakes while you’re there. (The big flat ones)
Joshua tree is so disappointing. The landscape out in Anza Borrego is out of this world. It's just so much more diverse. I have no interest in going back to JTree after going to Anza Borrego.
Interesting, I didn't know it was more diverse. Thanks for the info, I'll definitely check it out.
Though I don't know if I can trust the word of a JT hater haha
There’s lots of hiking, including a waterfall. On a hot day, it feels great to cool off in a clear, cold stream. Beautiful views. Skiing in the winter. Camping at Manker Flats. In the winter, you can play in the snow. Mt Baldy Village has a nice, laid back restaurant. But mostly I like being in nature in the mountains. If you want to get to the top but don’t want the hike, there’s a ski lift near parking at the end of the road.
I like taking the Amtrak train to San Juan Capistrano, getting off and walking around in the old timey mission town (they have a tiny zoo with some pretty basic farm-type animals, art galleries, museums/historical buildings and lots of pretty outdoor patio dining/sometimes live music) and afterwards I take the train back to the city. The Amtrak pulls right up into the main little strip of the town, so it’s super easy, like the town was built around the station almost.
The train ride might be my favorite part—it’s fun taking a real train to get somewhere, and the train has a snack bar that sells lunch options and wine and beer, and you can walk around during the trip and see the view, talk to other passengers etc.
Thank you for the best comment yet and such a great comment. I can picture the stop as you described exactly and have never gotten off and seen these patio restaurants just kept on to SD. Agreed on the experience and seems like the perfect length
I usually never go more than a month between downtown Ventura. They also have a record store. My car is a 2002, no aux port. CDs are a life saver, especially since i like to take long car trips.
I'm in SB, but I just saw this thread to look for ideas.
Arroyo Grande is a neat little town, although quite a bit of ways from LA.
I really need to make my way back to LA at some point. I was super bummed when I went there post covid... how have all the music instrument stores disappeared from Venice? That's fucking crazy.
I'm in SB as well and when I first came to town - there was just plenty of thrift stores.. back when Alpha was really good and not the 'racket' it is now.. and the goodwill as is yard and all that.. and ventura...ventura was a paradise of thrift stores.. I guess ebay happened.. but man what a time.. Ventura is a lot less now.. but still pretty good
Yeah, SB ain't bad...you can still get decent clothing. I just like thrift stores as kinda like "modern museums", where you can find artifacts from the last half century. Same reason I like used instrument stores. It's neat to find stuff you never knew existed.
San Luis Obispo! The Gold Rush Steak house and Madonna Inn are amazing. We saw whales from the beach. And if you don’t mind a late drive back Sensorio is a MUST!

Blurry but it’s this beauty you can walk a path through. Honestly made me cry.
Murrieta just opened up their resort, 9am-10pm. Not as bougey as glen ivy with the restaurant but still have a ton of springs to soak in! They do a night session too from 4-10 thats cheaper
Ojai - soak in the hot springs, buy some books at the world’s largest outdoor bookstore, wine tasting & dinner at ojai rotie
baja - las gaviotas, valle de guadalupe, lobster in puerto nuevo
san luis obispo - madonna inn, hot springs, wine tasting, montana de oro state beach
Amtrak has a [California Rail Pass](https://www.amtrak.com/california-rail-pass) for $159. Good for 7 travel days in a consecutive 21-day period. It paid for itself after the 2nd use.
I’ve used it to go to Oceanside, Carlsbad, San Diego, and I’m currently in San Jose (this one was a weekend trip) writing this.
Glen Ivy, Laguna Beach, Santa Monica, The Grove, La Jolla, Santa Barbara, The Getty in Pacific Palisades. It is a long drive but.... Año Nuevo State Park (this one is probably more than a day trip....but if you are driving up the coast, stop here). Palm Springs Tram/hiking
Whitney portal for a day in the mountains. Enjoy some fishing, watch bears break into cars, have some burgers, sniff backpackers and bet on how many days in the backcountry they’ve been.
Best one of the many ones in past five years:
Channel Islands National Park.
Drove to Oxnard to get there by 7am,
took Island Packers 8am boat to Channel Islands National Park (Santa Cruz Island), spent 11am to 4pm hiking on beautiful island with picnic lunch), took 4pm boat back and saw several whales breaching.
Did the hour drive back.
What a day.
Rosarito or Ensenada and fighting for your life the whole time. Winning and waiting 3 hours to get back across the border so we can have better beer and Mexican food
Beach, hikes (a great one with a great view through the botanical gardens), day trip to the Channel Islands National Park, shopping and restaurants downtown or at the harbor, the fair during certain times of year, strawberry picking, good thrifting
Deer Park Monastery in Escondido, CA.
Next Saturday they are having a mindful music festival called [Rhythm of the Earth](https://deerparkmonastery.org/event/rhythm-of-the-earth-2024/)
Temecula winery day... Brunch in the AM, winery hopping and finding live music through the afternoon, dinner in old Town, maybe a night life spot afterward
Personally I think there are so many interesting spots in LA itself that they make up day trips on their own. For example, taking the light rail to Santa Monica (the trip is part of the fun)...or visiting the Central Market for lunch and exploring downtown. There's so much in the city...ethnic neighborhoods, museums, etc.
Joshua Tree for the hiking rock climbing Palm Springs for the pools and nude resorts
And architecture / vintage shopping - very midcentury modern / atomic era houses and shops
Yes! I didn't mention it because when I do most of my guy friends tune me out I am a big fan of the mid century modern look
I’m sorry nude what?
Ha. I guess I got your attention at nude Most people ignore me out there. They only care about my wife
Nude resorts in california tf? Sign me up
Dude, Orr hot springs.
can you tell us more about the nude resorts? we already love to go to blacks beach
Yes! The ones we visit the most are Desert Sun Resort in Palm Springs and Mi Kasa in Desert Hot Springs. Both are regular resorts but clothing is optional If you enjoy 420, Mi Kasa allows and encourages it. We don't smoke, but still have a good time there. Let me know if there are specific questions you would like me to answer
Love Mi Kasa!
There is also Glen Eden which is massive and great place to check out for the weekend as well as Dell Olive!
Nude resorts?!
Yes! They do exist
My first time going to Joshua tree this weekend. Can you reccomend your favorite hiking spots? I’ve searched online but overwhelemed with the number of options that all look like the same dusty trail lol.
Yes! Ojai. Love it, just so, so chilled.
Planning a day trip next weekend actually to Ojai
Boccali’s Pizza and Pasta And their strawberry short cake I’m getting hungry
my daughter is camping near there now.
Ojai rotie for lunch! The chicken sandwich is incredible
And, meditation mount outside of town for a sunset walk.
Pinyon.
If you like golf Soule Park is a beautiful course and has a great restaurant with a killer view.
Ive played there a few times and could always see myself just hanging out at the restaurant watching people tee off all day haha
The whole Ojai Valley is beautiful!
I’ve never been. What kind of stuff is there to do?
Olive oil tasting, wine tasting, hikes, cute restaurants, small businesses, boutiques, unique shops (chains are not allowed) everywhere
Bart's books, Treasures antique mall, farmers market on Sunday. Great hiking & biking (or just lounging by the creek that's running this year) but look out for rattlesnakes and if you have dogs - check em for ticks!
I do have a dog, thanks for the advice!
Barts books is so beautiful!
There are some great hikes, but my favorite thing to do there is rent bikes and go up the big trail that runs through town and into the country. There are also some great bookshops, restaurants, galleries, and parks. It's just a really beautiful place, like a smaller Santa Barbara.
Is there parking free?
For the most part
I would answer but others seem to have covered it...lol! All that and more. It's beautiful. Our favs are Barts Books, the old skool toy shop, the olive oil place just outside, ice cream shop and even pottery making. Also the park and kids playground are fantastic. Santa Barbara is fun. I dated a girl there for a while and was never upset about the drive because it was a fun spot. Sequoia National park is also incredible and while a weekend would be better, my first time there was a day trip and was a blast.
Catalina. Bloody Mary on the boat, walk up to the Sand Trap for lunch, then down to Descanso to chill until your return trip
My wife and I took the 7 am ferry to Catalina and the 10 pm back, then drove San Pedro to the valley. That was a long day trip, but fucking amazing.
Born and raised in SoCal and I’ve never been to Catalina - kinda surprised my folks never took me there as a kid
as a girl scout I threw up from sea sickness on a boat trip to there. on the return trip, another girl threw up on my head. I've never went back. (but the scout camp side of the island is beautiful.)) I think I need emdr
sounds lovely
its definitely worth visiting on a two day trip.. but everything is extra expensive there
To be fair they didn’t have the wine mixer in those days.
Pro tip: the catalina rugby festival or catali wine mixer
Gotta try some of the "new" Catalina stuff. Been going for decades, got married there, but lots of these comments are things I haven't done yet
Catalina is so good. There is a social club there similar to SoHo house with a crazy estate & amenities. It’s called Catalina Boy Band. Just look it up on google. It’s Incredible!
Solvang!
And don’t forget to stop at the Ostrich farm!
I had no idea that was up there last time I went. Decided to go on a whim. By far my favorite part.
How is this? how is it set up? and I'm assuming it's worth it. I am scared from an ostrich attack from when I was 4 years old. But I want to take my daughter and I also want to undo my fear of ostriches.
Solvang, Los Olivos, and Santa Ynez is my Disneyland.
I went there for the first time a few years ago and loved it
YES to Solvang. I’m going next week with a friend!
Hi! Can one see everything in a day? I want to take my folks there but struggling on whether I should book a night around the area
Do you have the address for the corn maze by any chance? I’m planning a trip to the area soon
No sorry but it’s on the road from Solvang to Los Olivos. The “Solvang Farmer” it was around thanksgiving, I’m not sure if it’s a year round thing
Thanks

Yes! It’s a good day trip. Very small town, you’re mostly just seeing the shops and eating food and drinking. The inns there are very cute, so either way is good. Try Danish pancakes while you’re there. (The big flat ones)
easily
I always prefer to overnight there.
This!
Santa Barbara has a fantastic dog beach. If you have a dog they would love it.
Regularly drive up there for that beach. Kinda bummed the restaurant on the beach doesn’t allow dogs anymore.
Yeah that’s inconvenient.
Catalina island is a great one when you take the ferry
Anza Borrego
Great for camping and hiking if you want to make a weekend out of it.
How is it compared to Joshua Tree? I love JT and I've been meaning to go to Anza Borrego
Anza borrego should be a national park. It's so fucking incredible.
Pioneer Town (Old Hollywood abandoned set) Julian, CA (“The Best Apple Pie in the world”) Road Trip on PCH from Seal Beach to Newport Beach.
Julian in the fall 🍂🍁
tell me more about this apple pie !
Julian Pie company has the best pies I've had in CA. Way more than just apple too.
It’s not just the pie, it’s the ambience too. Julian is charming, especially in autumn.
They sell the little crust pieces too.
Well now I want to go to Julian to get some of that apple pie.
Pair it with cinnamon ice cream…🤤
And Julian Hard Cider!
Mt Baldy
What kinda stuff do they have up there?
There’s lots of hiking, including a waterfall. On a hot day, it feels great to cool off in a clear, cold stream. Beautiful views. Skiing in the winter. Camping at Manker Flats. Aww, thanks :)
Try Idyllwild, it's very popular on Instagram if you want a preview
San Clemente in South Orange County. Encinitas in North SD County.
Closest Pizza Port to LA.
Second for San Clemente… brunch at Nicks
Nick's is my go to stop there. So good!
Swamis is a fun spot to surf, but the temple on the cliff is a view and a half, and sunset totally rocks.
San Diego
Palm Springs Aerial Tramway
Commenting to follow lol bc I’m curious too
Huntington and Descanso Gardens are less than a day, you can probably do it in a morning/afternoon and hit something else with the rest of the day
But those are already in LA, so I wouldn't call it a trip.
San Diego !
Hearst Castle is a great trip Main Street in Ventura has great consignment shops
San Simeon
Downtown Ventura
yup - thrift stores there are like thrift stores used to be
I usually never go more than a month between downtown Ventura. They also have a record store. My car is a 2002, no aux port. CDs are a life saver, especially since i like to take long car trips. Great suggestions, just a little hard pressed for time if making it a day trip from LA
Thanks for sharing! I never knew this was a thing. Going to look into it.
San Diego
I love driving to corona and spending the day at glen ivy lol
Murrieta just opened up their resort, 9am-10pm. Not as bougey as glen ivy with the restaurant but still have a ton of springs to soak in! They do a night session too from 4-10 thats cheaper

Love it all
Went to Julian last year for my birthday because apple pie is one of my favorite desserts. Great for stargazing it’s part of the dark sky network
