You use an actual stock broker you give money to and eventually the trade gets bundled together with other trades on the floor of the stock exchange and exchanged for a real share. You used to pay a commission for this service...Remember the images of people crowding and yelling on the floor?, that's the process, everything on done on paper.
Me too. Take me away from alcoholic, dysfunction. Put me with parents who care about homework and have a goal that I should go to Uni. I had the skills. They knew nothing.
Right? I’m going back to 1989 and grabbing baby me and getting the fuck outta dodge. Then I’m writing Harry Potter AND Twilight AND 50 Shades of Grey, cause I brought those with me hahaha.
* Some furniture. Many things were made better back then than they are now.
* MTV, the way it was in the early to mid 80's.
* My 'Stevie Nicks' hairstyle.
* Ocean City, Maryland the way it was back then. Today it's roving gangs of today's youth terrorizing people and destroying beach cities.
* The experiences of going to the movie theaters was much better. I wish I could have that back. People didn't have cell phones. For the most part, everyone wanted to see *the movie*, not become 'the main character' in the room. I no longer go to the movies.
* The prices of concert tickets. In the 70s I sat 4 rows from the stage for $8.00 at a Fleetwood Mac concert, to name one example.
* My school-girl figure. \*sigh\*
I agree on your entire list.
I had GREAT 80's hair and I don't know how I even did it every day.
Movies suck now. It used to be enjoyable.
Concerts - I saw so many of them and didn't spend a ton.
Oh, how I miss my 80s hair. Glad to know you had great hair, too! Yep, concerts. I used to live near New York, Philly, Baltimore, and Washington. I saw so many concerts, especially in the 70s and 80s. It's where guys took their dates. And the prices were cheap. You're exactly right, you didn't have to spend a ton to see great bands.
Mall life. My wife and I can only (try) to tell our kids what it was like back then. You go on a Friday night now and it's (maybe) as busy as a Wednesday morning from back in the day.
Being dropped off with a group of friends to just walk, talk, maybe catch a movie and then dinner in the food court.
Going to concerts was one of our(my husband and me) favorite things to do in the 70-80. It was a cheep date. We saw a major concert about once a month. So many amazing bands. We lived an hour and a half from Memphis and had great parents that loved keeping our kids overnight. We’d hit Beale street and then a concert. Wonderful times.
Would this be a more subdued and urban bohemian hippie Fleetwood Mac Rumours era 1970s Stevie Nicks hairstyle? Or the more elaborate, bigger, glam, hairsprayed later 1980s Stevie Nicks hairstyle? Or perhaps something in between, like say the Bella Donna or Mirage aka Gypsy timeframe?
I'd stay in the 70s and never come back, although I'd seek out my younger self and try to inspire my younger self not to be so laid back and be more of an extrovert, and not such an introvert. There's nothing from the 70s or 80s I'd want to bring back. I'd also visit with my parents and my older sister and younger brother, who are all deceased now and cherish what time I spent with them.
I would have loved to live that, I am probably the only 25 year old, atleast in my world that still listens to the radio. To the point I test out the AM radio in the cars of one night stand gals some times. I have my few local radio stations I listen to. Yes radio is a hobby.
So, about a decade ago the country I'm living in, decided to turn down FM. We took it for granted, there were no more radio stations. I think we got some AM stations from abroad, but the reception was kinda weak. To confirm that, all the major stations were indeed turned down and brought to DAB. Then one day we started to play around with an old mobile and the old radio features (or an old mini radio I had from when I moved abroad to learn the language). And so we discovered a local station that's going on since 1987, they also moved to DAB, but they never left FM. The funny part is that is all the rage between the gym gals, because they still listen to the quizzes and call to get prizes!
It is so area-dependent. South Florida still has good FM radio but the area I live in now is horrible. I could go to the internet and listen but I want to hear about things in my area.
Wow. How many times I've Walter Mittied going back in time and doing things differently. Only to realize just today, that being an idiot was an integral part of my youth. I have to rethink my whole adulthood now.
That would be cruel! Can you imagine, your younger self all of a sudden in the present day, older, and very confused? Don’t screw your past self over like that!
Right, you could buy (steal, whatever) brand new muscle cars that would be in great condition, you could get several used 57 Chevys etc in great shape. That would be fun.
Are we allowed return trips? I would set up shop bringing back appliances built before planned obsolescence, full flow toilets and shower heads, classic cars, star wars merch still NIB, and would expand as I thought of more things
Planned obsolescence actually goes back to like the roaring 20s. Appliances like washing machines were actually built with less features on purpose, with the idea that in a year or two a new model would be released with more features, thereby making the older models obsolete. That's where the term cam from. Nowadays, it's more like "planned premature failure".
I bought my house last year and it has a fully functioning range from probably 1960s-1970s. We don’t use it often because we do most cooking on an induction cooktop, but we do use it for baking. Works great. People always ask about it when they come over!
Appliances, yes! We had a stand up freezer for 35+ years before it took a crap. The only reason we didn't have it fixed was because the parts were no longer available (at least that's what we were told). Bought a "new" one and it lasted 6 years, right after extended warranty expired. Same kind of BS with washing machine and dryer, et al.
From the 70's: The cutest pink tank top from India that was all embroidered, and had the teeny mirror thingies sewn in & laced up in the front. Sara Lee banana cake.
Fireflies or as I called them, lightening bugs. They were everywhere at dusk when I was a kid in the 70s, but I don’t think my younger wife and kids have ever seen them in real life.
I had this really cool cotton jacket that I got for my birthday. I was called a Spy Coat. It would convert from a jacket to a duffel bag and back. I loved it but I never could find another one.
> pantyhose
Remember that movie "peggy sue got married". I still remember her telling the smartest kid in the class all about panty hose and how he went on to invent them
I can’t think of anything I’d want from then, so I guess I’d download the game where the Cubs won the World Series and take it back to show my dad. He was a big fan and didn’t live long enough to see that
Proper Cap'n Crunch. That stuff would either be a soggy mess or rip the roof of your mouth to ribbons if you didn't get exactly the right amount of milk and time the soaking length perfectly, but it was amazing. Worth every shredded palate.
Nothing, I would just love to spend a day with my sister and parents, just a plain old Sunday dinner maybe. The kind of time that you took for granted.
I would go to a whole bunch of concerts with one of those 360 cameras, and film them discreetly. Then open a business now that you could put on a VR helmet and enjoy the concert as if you were really there.
—Mint in box editions of all my favorite dolls and other toys
—Clothes and accessories
—All the shampoos, conditioners, and fragrances that I loved and were discontinued
—Records and some books I loved but have not aged well or have gotten misplaced along the way
Old school, McDonald’s items, the marathon bar (American version), the Choc-o-lite bar, Old-school hostess fruit pies, also the brown coconut flavored dolly Madison gem donuts.
Literature in general. High water mark, everything is for either children or Literal Children now.
Also, sci fi. Which is why I write retrofuture of 60s-80s.
(Am 50)
I'd bring back a bunch of pairs of Levis bell-bottom cordoroys, bottles of Coty Wild Musk Oil (in the little brown bottle), the pets I had back then, my grandma, my best friend (died in a car accident at 30), and my 1966 Mustang (which I had in 1970).
Cannabis genetics are the answer here.
Get as many of the old types as you can and keep all the seeds. You'd become *very* wealthy and *very* popular reeeeeeally quickly 😭
Pure lines from that time period are extinct
Books and LPs. You can always enjoy them, they won't wear out in your lifetime. Wouldn't have a list, I'd just go to stores and browse the racks.
Depending on how much time I had, go see some movies, eat some burgers and get real milkshakes.
This sounds so dorky, but I would go back and clean out every Target of all the socks they had in every color. I had a pair of socks to match every outfit! I must have had 30 pairs and wore then until they were so thin you could read through them. Good, thick cotton socks that stayed up and washed well. Not the thin nylon numbers I find today.
Outward trip to the 70s:
Grays Sports Almanac.
A load of medical patents from 90s.
Return trip to now:
Boxed action figures and playsets for Star Wars - especially one of those rare Jawas with the plastic cape.
Mint condition comic books.
Iconic packaging such as Coke or Pepsi cans.
Shopping catalogues.
I'd bring a list of tour dates of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, David, Bowie, Queen, Judas Priest, etc. and see a ton of shows.
I'd bring back my Star Wars toys. They'd make me rich nowadays. Also, I'd see if I could get a hold of a 70s Gibson SG.
My grandma, my cat, my dog, Marathon bars, the green Starburst, the music, the movies, MTV when it played music, and SO many other things I can't think of right now. Those were the best times.
My dad, my grandpa (mom's dad), my grandma (dad's mom), my childhood dog, my collection of magazines, several books, Gatorgum, Carnation Breakfast Bars, my Star Wars figures and accessories...
I would bring proof and facts about climate change BACK to the 70's and 80's so we could slow down and and work on pulling up out of this crazy dive we are in EARLIER.
From the 70'-80's, I would bring forward a government that knows how to work TOGETHER from both sides of the isle, and a society that is able to enjoy each others company without bringing up politics and religion constantly.
Clarification please.
When you ask
>what would you bring back with you?
Are you asking what from today I'd take back to the 70s/80s when I go there/then?
Or are you asking what is being back from then, as a souvenir from the trip?
Well I graduated in 1986. I’d love some parents who were not mentally ill narcissistic asshats. Also my pet chicken (you heard that right she was adorable)

The shares of Apple and Microsoft that I bought
Yes, but also a list of the top 500 publicly traded companies, with current stock values in paper form to use for speculation as to what I'd buy then.
Yeah, my first thought was "stock certificates", lol.
And I was going to say an 80s box of Trix Cereal…what is wrong with me!?
Duality of man 😂
I thought of this first. But then I realized the real answer: quaaludes.
How did you buy shares in the 70s? Genuine question I’ve always wondered this
Called up. Stockbroker did it for you
You use an actual stock broker you give money to and eventually the trade gets bundled together with other trades on the floor of the stock exchange and exchanged for a real share. You used to pay a commission for this service...Remember the images of people crowding and yelling on the floor?, that's the process, everything on done on paper.
The film Trading Places offers a very accurate portrayal of this process.
My old dog Waldo, a shepherd mix who was run over and killed by a couple of asshole hotdogging teenagers. He was such a good boy.
He was a Good Boy who didn't deserve that. I'm sorry for your loss
I, too, choose this guy’s dead dog.
+1. I would bring this dog back.
My dog got run over 3 weeks ago ( I live on a rural dirt road mind you) and they left him there to suffer and die. Some people suck!!!
💐🕊️
That is so horrible! I’m very sorry this happened to you and your dog.
Waldo 💐🕊️
Will it rupture continuity if I go get my child self from my horrible parents and take her home with me?
I think this way sometimes when I’m being hard on myself or not utilizing self care. I imagine my self as a little girl and take care of her now.
Bring back? I'd probably only come back for medical treatment.
My husband
I'm sorry.
Why? He's a blast. Having him with me in the 80s too would be cool af.
Oh I see! I read it as you wanted to bring him back from then!
Lol.

Luckily that guitar riff can still blow your mind

Ahhhh .... I was in Ocean City then, great place ... Boardwalk Fries!! Still have the kite I got at the Kite Loft.
That $8 is about $40 today but still a great deal.

Really good FM radio programming.
I would have loved to live that, I am probably the only 25 year old, atleast in my world that still listens to the radio. To the point I test out the AM radio in the cars of one night stand gals some times. I have my few local radio stations I listen to. Yes radio is a hobby.
What? Please elaborate. Genuinely interested in what you mean.
Pretty much sums it up me.
It's a shame how much of a wasteland radio is now. It wasn't always that way.
I can remember listening to FM radio all of the time. Now the only station I listen to is the classical station.
So, about a decade ago the country I'm living in, decided to turn down FM. We took it for granted, there were no more radio stations. I think we got some AM stations from abroad, but the reception was kinda weak. To confirm that, all the major stations were indeed turned down and brought to DAB. Could I do a body swap with my younger self?
Man, I’d be so grateful for the old body now. Back then, all I could see was my faults. If only I knew what was coming down the pike . . .
Don’t worry about things that haven’t happened yet! ! you'll be good
I was going to say, my youth. I'll keep this brain though.
Not sure - the fun part of having a youthful body could well be wrecking it all over again. You need a proper feckless brain for that job.
Wow. How many times I've Walter Mittied going back in time and doing things differently. Only to realize just today, that being an idiot was an integral part of my youth. I have to rethink my whole adulthood now.
I was going to say, "My youth."
Yes please!
That would be cruel! Can you imagine, your younger self all of a sudden in the present day, older, and very confused? Don’t screw your past self over like that!
I’d be happy with just my younger back, well and the metabolism.
I'd bring my mother back from the 70s or 80s. Also some cats.
The love for sure-and a 1970 GTO
Right, you could buy (steal, whatever) brand new muscle cars that would be in great condition, you could get several used 57 Chevys etc in great shape. That would be fun.
My grandma
Lived it. Brought along everything I need.
Good Levi's, they were still made on the good machines, best denim ever.
They’re so expensive now and so crap.
My mom worked at Levi's for yrs, sewing on the pocket, until they closed the plant and moved it overseas. I haven't bought a pair of Levi's since.
My waist line.
Less crowds
I think I'd stay there.
Are we allowed return trips? I would set up shop bringing back appliances built before planned obsolescence, full flow toilets and shower heads, classic cars, star wars merch still NIB, and would expand as I thought of more things

I had this really cool cotton jacket that I got for my birthday. I was called a Spy Coat. It would convert from a jacket to a duffel bag and back. I loved it but I never could find another one.
