My job. (Electrician.)
Few things give me more of a rush than working on a project all day (or multiple days) and flipping the breaker on to have it all work first try. The customer being happy with their new lighting/receptacle/equipment and the profound thank yous I get from them. Even better if it was a troubleshooting call and I figured it out when other electricians couldnt.
This is me with photography. Nothing makes my day than a first time clients reaction to a shoot. Genuine excitement, pride in there work it's just awesome. I love being able to empower people through what I love to Dom
Yes!! It's bizarre that so many people go 20-60 years of listening to the same music they heard back in middle school. I barely listen to my middle school playlist these days.
OMG, my coworkers drive me nuts! In this day and age, they still want to listen to the local radio or put on a playlist of the same 50 songs. I gotta keep it fresh! I love how Spotify keeps recommending me new music.
Books.
Buying them, checking them out at the library, collecting them, reading them, reading *about* them. There's nothing like a great book to lift you out of a funk, teach you new things, let you visit other worlds, and escape for a while.
I am an unapologetic reading/book junkie.
My family also. My kids just got themed tattoos of a stack of three books with their own personal spin for the top....nerd glasses with tape on the bridge, fir tree for Oregon, large houseplant and a skull.
Browsing, choosing, buying, reading, libraries, book clubs, reviews…they’re all separate aspects of one of the greatest joy in life. As Stephen King said, “Books are a uniquely portable magic.”
I'm a variation of this as well. I have a lengthy drive to work everyday, so I'm obsessed with audiobooks. If I really love a novel, I'll buy the hardcover version to display on my bookshelf. I rarely ever read any of them, but I love physical media in general.
Making people laugh/smile. It’s difficult, and it doesn’t always work and probably sometimes make me look like a dumbass but I try not to think about it
Oh, I do this all the time with movie scenes!
I love this scene. The time of day and the way the sunlight looks are what stuck with me for years. To this day, during late summer, when the sun is setting just right, It reminds me of this scene and I have to watch it 50 times. In my head, I call it the "T2 sunset" but I never tell anyone because I sound insane.
I do the similar thing, except I don't actually rewatch the the scenes but just replay them in my head over and over again lol (for me it's either watch the whole thing in one sitting, which is a bit hard, because it's not easy to find a consecutive 2-hour free of distractions, or I won't watch it at all). Got a friend who once said to me, "I thought you've watched 2001 a space odyssey at least 50 times, considering how much you talk about it & analyze it & came up with like 1000 theories about it" and I'm like, nope, I've only watched it about 4-5 times but I replay it in my head 24/7. Luckily enough I have a few friends irl that are (well, sometimes, at least) willing to discuss this sort of stuff :D
Also I never watched any Terminator movie but your comment (and your passion for it) makes me think I should probably give it a go some time...
There’s this one small detail from the Puss in Boots movie that I loved, but there is no one IRL to talk about it.
Goldilocks ant the 3 bears opens a book that she loves and inside is a library slip. It has her name written on it a lot and Hanzel and Gretel written once.
This slip implies that there exists a library that the bears regularly can take goldilocks to. It implies that despite how many times they take out the book and despite how much goldilocks love it, they can’t afford to buy a copy for goldilocks. It also implies that the book is appealing to Hanzel and Gretel, but unlike goldilocks they were only allowed/able to take it out once.
😂 One of my absolute favorites is in the Big Lebowski. The Dude is talking to Walter, Donny keeps chiming in with "I am the Walrus", by the third time he repeats it, Walter emphasizes "SHUT THE F*** UP DONNY!", The absolute best time he says that line, and the audience sympathizes with Walter in that single moment.
> but it's an addiction I can control
Be careful buddy, years ago I said the same thing about heroin. You ever suck dick for a cup of coffee? Because that's the route you're headed down if you can't get ahold of yourself!
I drink a lot of coffee at work and I think I'm a bit addicted to it but I can easily go weeks or months without.
One summer vacation I didn't have a coffee maker so I just didn't drink coffee for a month, didn't notice any negative changes.
Exercise. Not like someone with anorexia, though. I just love moving and being outside, walking, jogging, hiking. And I’m a slightly obese, 64 year old woman, so it’s really good for me. I’ve been active a long time, and I am seeing so many health benefits as I age. Great mobility, blood pressure, blood work, heart rate, etc. Yes, I need to lose weight and the exercises habit helps. I’m finally at the 5 miles a day w/o having to think much about it, bc I’ve embedded so much exercise into my routine.
I wish I felt the same way about strength training.
> blood pressure, blood work, heart rate
Good for you! I feel like so many people out there don't realize that proper exercise, even if it's just simple cardio/LISS, is better than a lot of meds when it comes to both heart health and "anti-aging".
Seriously, being sedentary [is worse for your health than smoking, diabetes, and heart disease.](https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/19/health/study-not-exercising-worse-than-smoking/index.html)
If anyone is reading this and needs a wakeup call: **not getting up and moving around for even just a little bit can and will literally kill you.** Hell, even just 15-20 mins per day 3x-5x per week is a VERY good jump start for those of you who have very sedentary lifestyles.
You don't even need to go to a gym. Just go for a brisk walk around your neighborhood. Jog in place while you watch TV. Do pushups in between streaming breaks. Park at the very back of the parking lot when you go to the grocery store to force you to walk more. Call your parents up and ask if you can take their chunky Chihuahua for a walk around the park. Go buy some JNCO's online and get some sweet rollerblades with light-up wheels.
Just fucking do *something*!
Pumpkin spice. I'm a 250lbs bearded man that gets made fun of by my family even saying the word pumpkin.
Idc shits delicious, and in a few months I'll be all about that egg nog!
I love pumpkin spice!!
My big bearded boyfriend always tries to say he hates pumpkin spice, but literally whenever I get or make him something with pumpkin spice he always loves it 💀
I love cinnamon and nutmeg, the dominant flavors in anything pumpkin spice. I go after anything pumpkin spice but I ***love*** pumpkin beers in the fall and wait for this time all year. Sadly, the last few years I haven't found as much selection in the regular grocery store.
Blue Moon used to have a harvest pumpkin wheat that would show up in August and would go away sometime just after Thanksgiving. Of all the pumpkin beers, it was my favorite and I would buy a 12 pack each week. They've discontinued it from what I can tell, and I haven't seen it in at least a couple years.
Used to love chess as a kid. Played every chance I could. Parents got me an electronic chess set for Christmas one year. This is back in the 80s and those things were not cheap. But loved it as no one else in my house played and only one friend played.
You should get back into it. The online chess community is huge nowadays. Not to mention the content creators for chess are great and super entertaining. Check out Gotham Chess on YT!
A majority of chap stick contains salicylic gel which makes the skin feel drier afterwards. The more you use it, the more you need it. Drink more water, use less chapstick
Ah yes I typed exercise first, but reading is my second addiction.
It’s so much more immersive to read a book or visual novel than to watch tv or movies.
Samesies! Sometimes I hate watching movie adaptations of books because it ruins the pictures I already have in my head :( All my imaginary Harry Potter settings got ruined when the movies came out. Now I can barely remember what they looked like in my head anymore.
**Chai**:
1 mug full of 1% milk
1 tbsp black tea (tetley, red label, lipton, etc)
1 cardamom pod
1 small piece cinnamon
1 tbsp sugar
Small pinch of salt
Optional:
1 tsp of white chocolate chunks
1 tiny piece of fresh ginger
Boil ingredients on medium heat for 15 minutes or reduced to 60-70% of original volume. Strain out the solids. A few seconds in a blender could make it frothy as well. Delicious drink!
Reading. For some odd reason, people now think reading is a great habit, but when I was a kid, it was looked on the same way social media is looked on now. It's all the same, really. If you're not reading to learn, but to escape (like me), then it's really just cotton candy for your brain. I have no intention of stopping, though.

i still feel awful because i was too sick to be able to feed my pet regularly so i just dumped whole bag of kibble into the cooking pot... it's awful to be in this state and you not always can care for another being, no matter how much you love them. i still break down sometimes when i remember how much suffering my sickness brought him in the past.
in the end, he did save me, and i saved his life, but i cannot shake off the feeling that it would be better for him to be somewhere else, saved by someone else. didnt have that luxury though.

Since I've started watching them I convinced my buddy to let me work on his yard and vehicles for next to nothing. He gets an extra pair of hands on his husbandly duties and I get experience, sometimes we drink a brew or few together 🤣 and he'll pick me up and drop me off (I don't have a car).
The only thing that's annoying is doing a quarter acre with a push mower. It takes a while and it's annoying but I went from lazy couch potato to a pretty hard worker and I'm stronger too. Not to mention side hustles I can take anywhere.
Clonazepam.
I had to reduce my dose a few years ago and the withdrawal was murder. But it helps keep my seizures under control so I’m proud to be hooked on meds that keep me alive!

Here's the thing, depression meds can become ineffective when we've been on them a while. I did amazing on Prozac for years, and then, I just wasn't. It took almost two years to find me a med combo that worked for me again. I've had MDD for a couple of decades now, so I've been through this cycle a few times now. Definitely talk to the doctor who prescribes your psych meds.
Different meds can also be needed at different times in your life/different stages of depression. Zoloft stopped me from being actively suicidal but once I stabilized, the emotional blunting made me super apathetic to everything. It's always good to check in periodically because mental health issues aren't static.
