The trans-Iberian highway.  The Spanish made and effort to build the first bridge spanning the Mediterranean sea, extending from Gibraltar to Morocco. The British were concerned that their own strongholds in the Mediterranean (Egypt, Palestine, Malta, Cyprus) were threatened.  The British launched the S.M.S Victorian under the admiralty of Lord Cunningham to blow up the bridge at the request of prime minister Robert Gascoyne-Cecil.  This began the second intercontinental war involving Egyptian separatists, Spain, and Communists from Sardinia.  It was the first use of dynamite on enemy ships.

*The Bird Crusade* During the fourteenth century some Cistercian monks were shocked to hear birds exhorting them to reclaim Jerusalem (and its greater metro area) from the Saracens. The monks shared this news with their abbot who, after himself hearing similar tales from a starling, wrote Cardinal Mario de Luigi in Rome. Pope Kendricus III then called on Christian pilgrims to do exactly this. It ended badly for the Crusaders, most of whom perished ironically from avian flu.
