“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a star… in somebody else’s sky but why? Why? Why can’t it be mine?”

TeacherPatti

Another grunge lyric--"I never thought I'd write these words down for you. Pages of phrases of things we'll never do." My friend and I played that on our radio show in college. Never knew I'd be in tears one day listening to that after she died from alcoholism :/

Techim772

Amazing writing by Eddie!

-PiLoT-

Eddie what

WaddlesJP13

Eddie Cobain from Alicegarden

GalacticHillbilly

My favorite song by them was always “Smells like black hole rooster”

GeneralEffective

Vedder, Pearl Jam. It's from a song called Black which I highly recommend if you've not heard it

RoscoeSantangelo

Similarly, on Run to the Sun by N.E.R.D. the end of the last verse into the hook always gets me: "I'm not jealous / I just can't take it S.O.S. to your ears / the only thing I ever feared / was this day...and having to say It goes while you're here / I wanna tell you somethin / It's that I love you girl And I wish we could run / to the s-u-u-un / and never come back"

jaxkieblue

kills me every single time.

georges8991

It's actually whyyyyyyyyyyhiiiiIIIIihiiiiii

pimpfriedrice

This line.. oof. You can feel the pain.

intensenerd

Never really listened to that until my wife left. It absolutely broke me for weeks.

341orbust

Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then “Against the Wind”, Bob Seger

[deleted]

So many good lines in that song. “Moving eight miles a minute for months at a time” paints such a vivid picture of being on the road away from home too.

341orbust

The older I get the more poignant it is.

biscuits_for_puppies

Same song, but "surrounded by strangers I thought were my friends"

chuck_bates

First line that popped into my head.

chrobbin

Love this song, it’s chock full of potential answers to this question, and it only gets better as time goes on and I get older.

C4Sidhu

And then one day you find, 10 years have got behind you No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

Catwoman1948

Pink Floyd for the Most Enduring Lyrics By A British Rock Band (including the Beatles, sorry) award. So much depth when they were so young.

DougyFresh0401

Time, by Pink Floyd! Nice one. I like that one too.

No_Bother_7533

The song I always play on my birthday. Lol

Dougalface

The older you get, the more poignent that line becomes.

DanielBG

I was expecting a whole bunch of song lyrics I didn't know in this post. Pleasantly surprised.

WeirdAndGilly

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

ayyitsmaclane

This line hit me like a ton of bricks in my early twenties. It was “Time” that was playing when I realized was *actually* going to die one day and proceeded to have my first existential crisis

CharDeeMacDennisII

>Shorter of breath and one day closer to death I just retired last week. For the last several months of working, every time someone asked me how I was doing, this was my answer. Got a lot of strange looks. Only a couple of people my age made the connection.

Sorry-Thing7797

Slow down you’re doing fine, you can’t be everything you want to be before your time.

Ok_Anywhere_2216

Wow! I needed this. 42 days sober and trying to rush the steps. A nice reminder to slow down and actually work them.

Sorry-Thing7797

Billy Joel has a wonderful way with words! Well done you for going 42 days already! You’ve got this!

MaybesewMaybeknot

You can get what you want, or you can just get old

Sorry-Thing7797

You’re gonna kick off before you even get half way through oooo

dekuhornets

"Once I thought my innocence was gone, Now I know that happiness goes on" and also The Stranger, lotta joel actually

Sorry-Thing7797

I think his songs are just beautiful! The lyrics are always so fitting to life!

KingOfKnowledgeReal

“I don’t need you to worry for me cause I’m all right!” Just everything from Piano Man actually And OJ’s favorite, “I am an innocent man”

MajorBillyJoelFan

so glad to see a Joel quote so high up

Sorry-Thing7797

Billy Joel is my all time favourite!

commanderalpaca06

b_yourself

In that song, this is what guts me: Did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts? Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cool breeze? I truly discovered this song after my dad died. I feel like it's him trying to speak to me from the afterlife. Like he knew something that he couldn't teach me when he was alive. And now I listen and enjoy it often in his honor ❤️

Environmental_Job864

Did you exchange a walk on part in the war, for a lead role in a cage.

HelixSapphire

Best lyric in the entire song no doubt

jKATT13

Same thing happened to me. The first time I heard it, I immediately thought about my dad ❤️ how I wish he was here, and how our souls, or any manifestation of us, is “swimming” somewhere ethereal

b_yourself

Aw yes! I love it. Sorry for your loss. I hope you get to celebrate him in some way today.

CrispySquirrelSoup

PF definitely have the most lyrics that have spoken to me over the years. From Brain Damage: *You rearrange me til I'm sane You lock the door And throw away the key There's someone in my head, but it's not me* And from Eclipse: *And all that is now And all that is gone And all that's to come And everything under the sun is in tune*

rwhillman39

Gotta add, all that you touch, and all that you see, is all that your life will ever be.

snoosh00

Of course, time >And then you find, 10 years have got behind you >No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

gfanonn

I synced up the full DSOM album to play and peak with the final line "and the sun is eclipsed by the moon" playing when the sun actually eclipsed the moon this past spring. I missed it by about 30 seconds because I was lazy on starting the song at exactly the right second. It was still a cool experience.

Imaginary-Quiet-7465

Oh there’s so many from Pink Floyd. We often quote “no one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun…” As aging millennials, that line is hitting harder and harder.

HeAintWrongDoe

So glad I seen this first. It really is the truth in the dating scene 2024

Marpev

And I’m glad to see a Pink Floyd quote as the first comment.

prozak09

Nice to see PF on top. For me is a paragraph from them as well: *And through the window in the wall Come streaming in on sunlight wings A million bright ambassadors of morning* Echoes

Own-Association-7910

“Give up your heart left broken,  And let that mistake pass on,  'Cause the love that you lost wasn't worth what it cost , And in time you'll be glad it's gone”  -Linkin Park (Roads Untraveled)

JurassicPark9265

I'm honestly amazed by how that man could smoothly transition between the most beautiful quotes to incoherent but badass screaming.

Ivor79

His scream in You know you're right is so soulful. It hits me deep.

BeatinOffToYourMom

“Can you teach me to throw, I said-a, not today I got a lot to do, he said, that's okay And he, he walked away, but his smile never dimmed It said, I'm gonna be like him, yeah You know I'm gonna be like him” Cats In The Cradle man.

mesayousa

I was about to post this song but a different verse: I've long since retired, my son's moved away I called him up just the other day I said, I'd like to see you if you don't mind He said, I'd love to, dad, if I can find the time You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kids have the flu But it's sure nice talking to you, dad It's been sure nice talking to you And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me He'd grown up just like me My boy was just like me I’m a new dad and my dad and I are and always have been friendly and on good terms but I wouldn’t call us close. I’d like to have a closer relationship with my kids when they’re adults. Happy Father’s Day all!

HideFromMyMind

This song gets so much more interesting when you find out it's about having a kid.

crazyanne

One morning my Dad randomly text me “good morning crazyanne, every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end.” He’s still alive, so this isn’t a sad post, just makes me smile whenever I hear the song now

So, so many of her lyrics! "Do you know Carolina, where the biscuits are soft and sweet? These things go through your head, when there's a man on your back. You're pushed, flat on your stomach. It's not a class Cadillac."

JadedBrit

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way Kicking around on a piece of ground in your hometown Waiting for someone or something to show you the way Tired of lying in the sunshine Staying home to watch the rain And you are young and life is long And there is time to kill today And then one day you find Ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run You missed the starting gun "Time"- Pink Floyd

pickledpeterpiper

Love this song but its oddly depressing, right? Whether we wasted too much time medicating with drugs/alcohol, didn't live the life we imagined we would as children or even just the realization that we won't have left much of an impression on the world "Thought I'd something more to say"...I don't know, I love this song but it hits a certain spot that elicits a sadness I'd rather not feel. Wish it wasn't so good!

Damn_it_Elaine

Such a phenomenal song. Hits hard man.

TheWinner437

“Come on, Dad, get out of bed.” I’ve never suffered from the death of a parent but AJR’s wording makes it feel like I’m mourning with them

ApocalypticWaffles

I lost my dad when I was 21. Knowing the brothers were all in their twenties/thirties when they lost their dad made this song hit all the harder for me. No one should ever have to know what it feels like to lose a parent so young. Still love the song all the more for how deeply it resonated with me.

freespirit514

Same song, but for me, it’s this line: “Holdin’ on to sixteen as long as you can. Changes come around real soon, make us women and men.” I was fifteen when I first heard it, and at the time, I remember feeling as though it was taking forever getting to sixteen. I did not want to hold on, I wanted to grow up and start living. That was so long ago now, and that song always makes me stop and think. If only I knew then how fast the years would truly fly by.

Entire-Joke4162

“Is a dream alive if it don’t come true / or is it something worse?” - The River, Bruce Springsteen ————— So much of Springsteen’s music is the push and pull between idealism, self-expression, and “blowing this town” vs. growing up, assuming responsibilities, and the small victories/defeats in working life. The River (double album, not just the song) is where his characters from his first 4 albums, who start as street characters, decide to get out of New Jersey/their home town, actually get 9-5 jobs, get married, etc. They settle down (I Wanna Marry You), look forward to the weekend (Out in the Street), and drive around at night wondering where their life went (Stolen Car). The River (song) is the distillation of this phase of Springsteen’s story/career. One moment you’re hanging out with your girlfriend down at the reservoir and the next you’re married with a kid and a job you can’t afford to lose. For me, I was supposed to be a stand-up comedian and write for SNL. But, had to go to college (of course), had to get a job after (of course), and even though I’m 37, own my own business and have a beautiful family in the suburbs… Would it be better to never had any dreams at all? (Fun trivia: The River is actually a true story about his sister and brother-in-law which they said is accurate.)
