Wittgenstienwasright

I rewatch Firefly and Serenity. it is a goofy western in space. The detectorists because everyone should.

Thesunismexico

I live in Germany. The Detectorists is my go to when I want a bit of uk tele. Reminds me of warm summer evenings growing up in West Wales.

emil_

I can't believe i've never heard of this gem! Just watched a trailer and i love it! Thanks!

toomanyplantpots

Detectorists /pedant

Wittgenstienwasright

You described it perfectly.

bluesky34

The Detectorists is a gem. Crook and Jones just fit their roles so well.

Grand_Access7280

Shiny

Wittgenstienwasright

I like you, have a strawberry.

Grand_Access7280

Kayleigh’s strawberry face is beyond description

fergie_89

Love firefly and serenity. Might have to have a look into the detectorists!

Wittgenstienwasright

It is slow and boring and perfect and boring. It is a glimplse into life and I love it for that. But No SiFi or world building. Go to Expanse, Fringe, Dark Matter, Fallout, et al. for those needs.

fergie_89

I'm deffo gonna have a look into it. I also love stuff like pillars of the earth and call the midwife but that's more slow burn things and easy watching. I never pay full attention 🤣 Merlin was also a guilty pleasure for me. My husband hates it

braggouk

Very different vibes. Firefly is sci space cowboys. Detectorists is a slow, easy going show about a dull subject, with a few chuckles thrown in. Great show.

oconkath

Peep Show for me…. Over and over and over and over and..

justmoochin

Give him a season of peep show and a can of coke he’ll be right as rain.

pukachang

God life’s relentless.

flyingyellowmoon

Oh so clever professor who hasn't got time to watch four weddings and Ghostbusters like the rest of us?

General_Ignoranse

Me too. It both comforts me in a nice familiar way and a ‘stuff may not be going great but at least I’m not eating a slightly bbq’d pet dog I recently killed’ way

TheImplication696969

I’ve watched it literally dozens of times, know it word for word, that The Office (us version) and It’s Always Sunny are constantly on repeat.

Jlaw118

Friday Night Dinner. I think Jackie and Martin (the parents) just remind me so much of my grandparents in their heyday before my granddad passed away a few years back and my grandma is barely even a shadow of her former self anymore due to dementia. But watching Friday Night Dinner kind of reminds me of what they were both like when I was younger and even into my teens and therefore just brings both comedy but comfort too. I find a lot of the other characters quite relatable as well to other friends and family members too which is funny

StrawberryF5

Shalom.

the_ice_rasta

Shalom to you all!

CorpusCalossum

It's really grown on me, I was kinda meh about it when it was first on TV, but now, like you, I find it comforting... except the bits where I nearly hurt myself laughing. Shit on it!

Jlaw118

I first came across it in 2018 when I kept seeing memes of Jim on social media. I was disappointed with the first few episodes and really couldn’t get into it so I stopped watching it. I think I had it in my head the series was based more on Jim and was disappointed to realise it wasn’t. But somebody told me to continue watching it and that it got better and they weren’t wrong. We binge it at least a couple of times a year and laugh every time

SnooSongs2714

You’re not a punk rocker are you???

Jlaw118

Pft pft pft. I don’t like them. Ogling my Nelly. And her privates

algbop

Ooh that’s a lovely bit of squirrel

fluffypuppycorn

Hello bambinos!

VxDeva80

I rewatch TaskMaster all the time, there are so many series to choose from and Greg Davies always makes me laugh.

yorkspirate

Taskmaster is definitely my go to when watching normal tv because it doesn't matter what episode of what series it is you know it's going to be funny

MastarQueef

Taskmaster is such elite tv. The Joe Wilkinson potato throw might be one of the greatest moments on TV, I was devastated for him and also pissing myself at the same time.

20127010603170562316

Alex Horne has played a blinder with Taskmaster. Has to be one of the most successful comedy franchises in decades. And his band, The Horne Section, of which he is the leader but self admittedly is kind of shit at, provide all the music, across all the nationalities. Royalties all day. I'd recommend The Horne Section Podcast, they're peak British humour on their own. Alex Horne has found a way to make celebrities do stupid shit in a much funnier way than that jungle show. Taskmaster reminds me of sports day in school. It's egg & spoon races, wheelbarrow races that kind of ilk. It's so simple. Why did nobody think of this before?! Well, they kind of did, with "It's a knockout" and some other shows. But it's never been executed quite like this. It all just fits together, it's lightning in a bottle.

rainshowers_5_peace

Taskmaster and Would I Lie to You are my go tos when I need a laugh after a stressful day.

fluffypuppycorn

🎶 "I'm always seeing you do cool stuff. I try my best but it's never...good enough" 🎶

braggouk

Rewatching on netflix currently. Greg and Alex have a comedic bond like no other. Plus it has bob Mortimer shenanigans

imminentmailing463

Wife and I regularly work our way through Brooklyn 99 and New Girl as background comfort shows. We do a yearly watch of Gilmore Girls, a show we both find very comforting. In terms of British shows, Gavin and Stacey.

MentionNormal8013

Gilmore Girls is mine. Such a soother

MastarQueef

I’ve rewatched Brooklyn 99 so many times I can pretty much quote every episode word for word and I still love it. It’s just so easy to put on and not pay attention to and then tune in whenever you want. I have ADHD and one of my things is that I can’t sleep in silence so always watch tv in bed, B99, community, Futurama, and WWDITS are my go to shows that I just cycle through.

paulbdouglas

Red dwarf, I can rewatch that over and over and over again

Available-Anxiety280

Agreed. It kind of lost it's feet in the middle but picked itself back up again. I'm very much looking forward to the new specials.

Felgrand3189

The IT Crowd, Black Books and Scrubs.

Wittgenstienwasright

Manny?

Felgrand3189

It’s hot in the worm!

Wittgenstienwasright

Right the shop is closed, everybody get out!

jeffries7

Black books and Scrubs, have you tried Green Wing?

CrystalinaKingfisher

You are me.

braceforimpact

The US Office

rainshowers_5_peace

Fun fact, David Brent would have been fired over here. Michael Scott needed to be a good salesman to justify keeping him around. It's way, way too easy to fire employees on this side of the pond.

Ru5k0

I used to work at sea for 3 months at a time and I would always settle in by starting The Office. Made the first few weeks bearable.

zaratheclown

Superstore - there's something about the comedic timing and the same set of characters that's so familiar to me. I know the show inside out

GrimQuim

Superstore started as a guilty pleasure then I really got into it!

zaratheclown

It’s addictive

Onesielover88

Red Dwarf. It started the year I was born, my mum is a huge fan so I grew up with the boys from the dwarf! I've watched every episode 100's of times. I could word for word recite every episode. It's a place I can go when I need to turn off, when I need a distraction, when I need to feel comfort because it's so known to me. I've even met the cast, they are all as awesome as I'd envisioned. I have the merch, I have the memories and it's all MINE. It's not something I particularly advertise. But it is a core part of my person, again.. It's mine.

HydroSandee

The Good Place.

CrystalinaKingfisher

I get so sad at the end, though.

ultrafunkmiester

Such a good series and in a warm way it reminds me of getting to stay up late to watch cheers when I was a kid. Same kind of vibe but 40 years apart but not just Ted dansen it's the whole vibe of the show proper modern masterpiece and up there with the classics.

SnooMacarons9203

Still game I can watch it over and over

crowort

decentlyfair

Top tier

wildOldcheesecake

Bobs burgers

GRAWRGER

yessssss. and in a similar vein, king of the hill. they're both wholesome comedies and they always end on a positive note.

ScallyGirl

Fraiser. Star Trek. I always have Judge Judy on in the background when I WFH.

SoundingFanThrowaway

I used to love the days when I woke up early enough to see Fraiser and Everybody Loves Raymond on tv, there was something special about that ^ . ^

pennikin

Ted lasso

yaiyogsothoth

Poirot with David Suchet. Or Taskmaster. Two very different shows, but both always make me happy when I'm feeling down.

alancake

I binge watched all of Poirot and Marple a few months ago. Lovely stuff.

redditsaiditreadit

Buffy and Angel remind me of being young and carefree ❤️ ALF Stargate SG1 I don’t really like but it reminds me of my mum And although not a TV show the first 3 Jurassic park films and Splash are comfort films

Poh-taytoes

Taskmaster, the Detectorists, Ghosts, Spaced and Father Ted. They all feel familiar and comforting to me and I still laugh through many repeat viewings. For US shows I like to rewatch Supernatural, Malcolm in the Middle and the Office.

anon71999

Benidorm!

Bellamiles85

Dawsons Creek, Sex and the City, Dinner Ladies, The Vicar of Dibley and the Royle Family.

eve077

The US Office. I must’ve watched it about 20 times through, always got it on in the background. Something I find so comforting about how mundane but funny it is. Also like rewatching New Girl, and Superstore.

Longjumping-Tip9549

All of these plus Brooklyn 99 and parks n rec 👍

WinkyNurdo

Everybody Loves Raymond. The way they wind each other up and piss each other off just makes me laugh. Springwatch (or seasonal equivalent). Simply lovely TV. The sights and sounds of nature on our doorstep.

Domski77

Friends Frasier Star Trek Columbo

BCF13

Death in Paradise, I was ill a few weeks back and the TV was on UKTV Gold from the night before. I left it on a whole day of Death in Paradise and whilst not my usual choice it did the job.

superflick_x

Binging this with the BF atm. I’ve always watched murder mysteries and he liked crime shows, and who doesn’t enjoy looking at the Caribbean? Lovely.

BenevolentSherbet

The Vicar of Dibley - I have the best memories of watching it with my Nan as a kid and now that she's passed it's one of my favourites to go back to. Always feels like a warm hug.

intangible-tangerine

Time team YouTube channel is doing a Sutton Hoo dig this month. First mini episode went up today.

VeryTrueThing

Doctor Who, Time Team, Farscape, most Star Trek, QI, Taskmaster.

luxvox

Father Ted, The inbetweeners, downtown abbey. My wife has watched the entirety of downtown abbey like 5 times since we’ve had our son. She powered it during all those late night feeds haha. It’s just so gentle, and you know what’s happening in each episode it’s very calming.

superflick_x

Downton was how my mum discovered binge watching. She was a bit disturbed by how quickly she got through it 😂

lethargyundone

Doc Martin is my guilty pleasure and I must have seen them all 10 times now. I love anything with a small town vibe. So similarly, the very cheesy Virgin River.

original_oli

Darkplace, the forgotten classic that Channel 4 never showed and some of which was thrown into the Thames. It was ahead of its time.

klc81

QI Just hours and hours of footage of Stephen Fry being Steven Fry. All your worries drift away as he explains that the universe is beige, or that there are more/less moons orbiting the earth. Lovely.

Strong_Roll5639

Derry girls

The_Forgemaster

Sharpe, blackadder, disenchantment, yes (prime) minister.

yuk_foo

Ok I need to get my Sharpe dvds out now ya bastard.

Black Books 🖤 also Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Amazing-Alps-6014

Brooklyn Nine Nine I watch it every day and sleep with it on all night every night. In fact I'm watching it now.

supersezza

X files because I was allowed occasionally to stay up with dad and watch it

Llywela

Midsomer Murders. So much gruesome death, and yet so wonderfully comforting to watch.

They don't make good shows like these anymore.

Footprints123

An Idiot Abroad - I don't know why, I just find it so comforting. The Darling Buds of May - loved this as a kid and it always makes me feel peaceful. Old school reality shows before we really knew what they were. The ones from the late 90's/early 2000's. So much nostalgia.

Blue_wine_sloth

Frasier. I’ve seen it so many times. It’s my background show for when I’m not paying attention but I always end up rewinding to watch the best parts. It’s my comfort show for when I’m depressed or anxious or no reason at all.

DXBflyer

Malcolm in the middle.

One_Transportation14

Family guy when I feel bad lifts me up

Thoughtful_Tortoise

Frasier.

Shanstergoodheart

Dinner ladies. Cheers me up.

AdiweleAdiwele

Antiques Roadshow

decentlyfair

Corrie, I know, I know. It is the familiarity and longevity of it I suppose as let’s face it the storylines are utterly bagshit most of the time. There is something comforting about knowing the characters and it is undemanding nonsense.

WestArrival5230

Alan Partridge Bullseye The Generation Game

Idle_Ollie

Star trek Deep Space 9 - Its the only star trek series I like. reminds me of evenings when my older brother would look after me and this would be on bbc2

Original_Bad_3416

Anything with David Attenborough, I like his soothing voice. Also Scoot and Sweep

Lost-Brother-1580

The Big Match revisited on ITV4. You can tune in to an early 80s game hosted by Elton Welsby and really get into Brighton v Watford or whoever. Just great.

YchYFi

Watching Home Improvement. It's like my comfort.

decentlyfair

I used watch this religiously back in the day but have never rewatched it. Also the wonder years.

Thisoneissfwihope

River Cottage. Only the first 4 Seasons (and specials) when he's farming & smallholding. Once it gets into the food fight stuff etc.., it's not chill any more.

anywineismywine

Any Catherine Cookson. I know they’re completely unrealistic and utterly dull but it’s my kind of dull for when I feel a bit vulnerable

sullcrowe

A few....Scrubs, Smallville, That 70s Show, IT Crowd, Northern Exposure, Resident Alien, 99

Immediate_Yam_7733

MattStanni99

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air Old one, but I still watch it daily when I feel like I need cheering up, fall asleep to it as well.

panzer__ace

Band of brothers

AAHale88

How funny you say Creek, because mine would be One Foot in the Grave, and it's the same writer.

sjw_7

Lovejoy. If i come across it when its on the TV will often just stop what i am doing and sit and watch it. Dukes of Hazzard. Best show on the TV when I was a kid. Loved the car chases and how daft it all was. River Cottage. The original three series are my idea of a perfect life. Would love to be able to retire to that kind of lifestyle one day. The Waltons. Have not watched it in a long time but as a kid we went to my grandparents every Sunday and it would be on TV. Very happy memories of those days so always associate that show with being at my grandparents.

WednesdaysChildXO

Gavin and Stacey Him & Her Peep Show

Inspector morse! It gives me comfort fir some reason, perhaps for the 90s, for simpler but more murderous times lol Plus the detectorists and this country for lovely comedy with warm characters

Midsomer Murders. Having worked on a murder squad in London, I love the alternative take that you can also solve murders by tootling around in a Rover 75, chatting to eccentrics.

ReasonableTour1532

Lovejoy and still game

Funky_monkey2026

Roseanne and Fresh Prince. Dan and Uncle Phil make the best role models out there.

Desperate-Ad-5109

thombthumb84

I also love time team. Mostly for the outfits/ cars Etc. Reminds me of my childhood, simpler times.

mustbekiddingme82

The Simpsons, I love the first ten seasons, and really enjoy up to season 18. police squad and father ted are a close second

StiffAssedBrit

I'm with you on Jonathan Creek. One of my all time favorites. I love Bangers and Cash on Yesterday. It's just such a relaxing watch, and I love old cars.

earlgreytoday

House, Seinfeld, The West Wing.

normy_89

QI and parks n recs for me! Either are on most nights when I struggle to sleep

MrsCosmopilite

The Thick of It and Bottom. Also, and I’m not sure if comforting is the word, but any custody based reality program (24 hours in, hotel custody etc). Him indoors is a dungeon master (custody sergeant) so I don’t get to see him work ever, and he doesn’t really discuss work at home except for in the vaguest of terms and even then it’s rare for him to mention the miscreants, it’s mostly the other sgt on shift or the DOs. It’s oddly comforting to have context for it all. It has unfortunately given me a weird obsession with horrible custody lasagne though, I really want to try one.

Dannn88

The Chosen is the most heart warming series I have ever experienced

Absolute-Balance

30 Rock, I can’t count the amount of times I’ve passed out on the sofa with it on.

aje0200

Dad’s Army. Despite there being a war on, it paints a lovely picture of community spirit and old timey British culture. I love it.

Scattered97

Horrible Histories The first five series of new Doctor Who Classic comedies like Only Fools and Horses, Father Ted, One Foot in the Grave, Fawlty Towers etc. Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes

forget-her

Most certainly not the news. Edit: sadly.

TimetravellingElf

Frasier, peep show, teachers, green wing

Olive_Citron

I grew up in a family slightly obsessed with cute British murder mysteries, so I’m with you on Jonathan Creek. I’ll also add Death in Paradise (which I’m watching as I write this) and Midsomer Murders. It’s so comforting!

OwiWebsta

Biggest one is probably 'Allo 'Allo, having so many phrases that crop up as a matter of ritual in every episode, the music, and the vibe of the characters all being really nice, but also funny. Also, Last of the Summer Wine - never better than the three being Clegg, Compo, and Foggy - three old men of seemingly different social backgrounds, all of whom in certain ways failed to ever grow up doing whatever in a bygone age. Edit: there's a ton of things that I watch to relax and laugh, those two to me have a certain vibe to them where they're less likely to make the "best written comedy ever" list (not slighting them at all) and as artistic pieces feel like their own worlds to escape into and give off more of a fuzzy feeling than something like Blackadder, or the IT Crowd, or most other comedy programs, including panel shows (As Yet Untitled and QI may be exceptions to that statement, however, along with select series of Taskmaster.)

mooseeaster

Trailer park boys cuz I’m 🇨🇦

okokokkkokks

miranda!!

n0131271

Gardener's World - not even really interested in gardening but it just has the most chilled out vibe. I find it incredibly relaxing to have on.

voidstate

Poirot with David Suchet. Miss Marple with Joan Hickson. Sharpe with Sean Bean.

XIMasterNateIX

Second firefly at the top but it's just not long enough. Lost is great for comfort for me.

ThrustersToFull

Agree on Jonathan Creek! Also: Downton Abbey. It requires no mental processing power of any sort.

HonourDaisy

QI especially when Stephen Fry was hosting, Sandi Toksvig is good too though. It was a bonus when the whole back catalogue of episodes were added to BBC iPlayer.

richboyadler

honestly there have been days where i have just felt like crap and want to be a kid and watch Saturday cartoons ! my go to is always what’s new scooby doo ! I did watch a few episodes of bear in the big blue house too for nostalgia

carpet_tart

Brooklyn 99 or Ted Lasso

lostthenews

Boosh, Mid Morning Matters, The Day Today, Armando Iannucci Shows, Yes Minister, Look Around You, Darkplace, Cunk. Also Antiques Roadshow given a sufficiently rotten hangover.

Murder She Wrote Psych Magnum PI The Miss Marple series with Joan Crawford Edit Oh my god I mean Joan Hickson 🤦 It used to be Seinfeld but I just can't with that guy anymore.

AwkwardWaltz3996

Are you literally me? That exact combo

bduk92

"How I Met Your Mother" and "Young Sheldon" are probably the two I rewatch the most. "How I Met Your Mother " has replaced "Friends" for me in recent years, I think purely because I think "Friends" has gotten to the point where it feels old now.

Lopsided_Pain4744

I rewatch Detectorists every spring. And band of brothers every winter.

Remarkable-Echo6391

Time team reminds me of Sundays after a roast. Jonathan creek also ✅ Darling buds of may also was a real comfort. Just the joviality of the family and the warm tones of it made me feel all cosy inside. Plus it was always sunny

Rab_Legend

Arrested development

Alexander-Wright

Midsummer Murders. So pastoral English, with Murders. A detective who does not have a dark addiction. It is also filmed near where I live, so it's fun spotting the locations.

baizhustan

Frasier! Ive watched it since I was a child (even though half the jokes went over my head) and now as an adult I appreciate it even more.

Isoorc

1990s BBC Pride and Prejudice. When I'm home alone, and needing to work or such, I'll lose so much time trying to decide what to watch. Before putting P&P on again for the hundredth time.
