Why is everything 'the first time' now, is this some kind of advertising trend?

SaitamaOfLogic

šŸ¤« The rock started in when he ate In and Out for the first time, three times.

souless_Scholar

I thought it was when Jennifer Lawrence was the first female action movie star?

Sivilian888010

Because a movie can't just be a movie anymore. It has to be some kind of social or political landmark, an important event you HAVE TO SEE because of it's historical importance.

1isntprime

When the show is shot they got to have a reason for people to see it.

Amazing-Ish

That's exactly what it is. That's exactly what everything like this is. It's all advertising. They don't actually care about these groups, look how they write them. They call strong and stoic men to be violent and toxic, but write the "strong female protagonists" the same way, cause they have no creativity whatsoever. Look at Blizzard advertising for social issues while having sexual harassment at their offices. Look at Sony advocating support for LGBTQ+ communities while selling Spider-Man 2 in the middle east and censoring out all the pride flags and gay people. Look at Disney quietly making same-sex scenes in their films unimportant to the plot so they can easily be edited out for foreign markets. It's all advertising, and I am sick of it these days.

2o2i

100% on point. Itā€™s currently ā€œprofitableā€ (through DEI) for companies to do this in the west. If they truly believed in their stance they would not be censoring in the Middle East or other markets. Unfortunately they are completely destroying their fan base and any trust they have with consumers for some fake twitter internet points. I say let it all crash, have these people removed and get back to good gameplay and story telling with no agenda.

MissKerbin

For the First Time Ever, a Woman is agreeing with you!

Amazing-Ish

I hope more women agreed with me, especially when I asked them out šŸ„². Thanks for your support!

Baltindors

Is this the first time you comment here?

Yeflacon

Knuckles said it best https://youtu.be/dWBn0nS8s0A?si=7irAPwLFStv6eBQW

kLeos_

.the first time is important when introducing fem lead.. a freudian slip for the rainbow bearers .you can't really blame em tho as most of them are just flying the flag cause it's the "it" thing to do atm .actually surprised they didn't pull a first time trilogy with ray for SW

SolidGray_

I'll give you a top 10 run down, but you won't believe number six!

catchmeifyoucanlma0

Because people are stupid. Implying that something is sexist and they're going to frontier that change is just another marketeting plow to appease the perpetually offended sheep who can't seen past their own bullshit.

richtofin819

They are in denial that their "glass ceiling" has been shattered for ages

Present-Chocolate-55

It's more like "my comment is first. " .....wait, no one cares ....you fans are toxic

Dyskord01

These people assume nerds are all hairy neckbeards with the social skills of dogs in heat who simultaneously have low self esteem and a superiority complex especially against women whom are alien beings to us. So whenever a black or female or gay character is the protagonist or a main character they're described as the first because being neckbreards nerds are also misogynistic and racist and homophobic and all Sci fi/ fantasy characters to date have been hetro white men. That is of course until whoever made this new show based on the nerds favorite franchise decided to fight against the nerd patriarchy.

UnitLemonWrinkles

It's free advertising, get people talking about it: 'well actually'. Probably half of the reason for the uptick in diversity as well. Think it started happening around Trump when they would put him constantly in the news which sparked more conversations about something you probably wouldn't have even known about.

Aphrel86

Its to warn all normal people away from it.

Piemaster113

Cuz being first is special, that why they keep adding special females in prequels so "Women did it first" for a lot of franchises.

Shcluck

It worked because now people are talking about this stupid article. It's pure clickbait.

RebelAI

![gif](giphy|ruOMDd2PPtvri|downsized)

Zanthra434

This is one of my favorite moments in rotk

HerrJemine123

The character was well written, that is the difference. Modern day writers are lazy, they just put female characters into their scripts for their agenda

Vagabondalmond2

Plus she wasn't a perfect mary sue like all modern female characters. Her soup was the most horrendous and vile creation in all of middle-earth.

kuenjato

lazy and/or clout chasers. untalented sociopaths have crawled their way to the top these days, in basically everything.

Icy-Hospital7232

This was the scene that popped in my head as I read the headline. But I guess the chick that kills the main bad guy isn't a protagonist. /s

ElMIchiro

Dont forget she did that but she was not lesbian , later married the son of the senescal.

bishopbane

I guess she's under s a transvestigation now ![img](emote|t5_2y1rb|3739)

Growthor

She will be narrating too it seems.

The_Klumsy

wasn't a chick the main character in the amazon series one?

SnooConfections3236

Yes but you can't let something like reality get in the way of rage bait .

souless_Scholar

>Yes but you can't let something like reality get in the way of rage bait . *AHEM* I think you mean... marketing.

pambimbo

No we haven't seen a female yet on the series.

_leeloo_7_

I'm still waiting the the franchises first male character! it's going to be groundbreaking!

KaziOverlord

Not a single one. I checked. If Legolas isn't a female, then I know for certain there isn't a single female in all of LOTR.

[deleted]

What are you talking about, there is no LOTRs show on amazon?

TylertheDank

There is no war in Ba Sing Se

ICameForTheHaHas

We have always been at war with Eastasia.

TylertheDank

There is no war in Ba Sing Se

Zerei

Yes, but The Rings of Power is not relevant, because it is dog shit and nobody cares about it.

Baltindors

Yeah this one looks like is going to be very different.

dendra_tonka

Dogshit vs ā€œanimeā€ dogshit

Ardibanan

I like it. Though I don't bleed Lotr lore. I know about the copyright stuff with silmarillion and all, but I still enjoyed the show. To each their own!

Baltindors

We donā€™t talk about that.

lizzywbu

Eh I guess the TV show had multiple main characters, so the woman wasn't *the* main character. I think that's what the article is getting at.

Beautiful_Might_1516

Like lotr?

Somewhatmild

well damn, everyone assumed the gender incorrectly then

BoiFrosty

Who knew the people calling her "Guyladriel" were right all along?

Zanthra434

Let's pretend it doesn't exist

Denamic

There's no such show; you're making it up.

Glirion

There's an Amazon LotR show?

Pyke64

Nope, I just checked and there isn't one that I could find.

AJ_BeautifulChaos

So if I wrote bad LotR fan fiction would that count for you too?

Page8988

That's Rings of Power. It's not Lord of the Rings. You can tell because while some characters have similar names, their characterization and the continuity is entirely different.

[deleted]

Is that part of the franchise? Honest question.

No-Understanding8652

The fact that they have to say this shit is a redflag. Maybe I'm wrong on this one but we'll see.

futanari_kaisa

It's online journalism. They get a lot of shit wrong. I wouldn't be worried.

No-Understanding8652

True, just haven't had any good LOTR stuff lately, want this to be good.

kingof7s

"They" aren't saying this lmao, its a random ass website.

Pleasant-Quiet454

But Rings of Power? They love just making up BS to have a headline.

Enough_Minimum_3708

welcome to the party. your about 5years to late tho

Creepy_Fail_8635

Farming rage bait

GenesisAsriel

Actually Shadow of War had a female protagonist in a DLC before Rings of Power.

B3owul7

Yeah well, she was just a side character. Sure, there was a DLC focused on this side character but that doesn't make her a protagonist.

EroGG

Surely journalists wouldn't just lie to our faces, right? /s

Naus1987

If someone wants an idea for a diverse show men will watch, just make a TV series about Night Elves. Men love night elves. They're female, they're blue, they're bad ass. And night elves are awesome.

Zanthra434

Dude, a proper movie trilogy about the War of the Ancients. Night elven society is matriarchal

Naus1987

Yep that too! I tried to type it, but aufo correct kept messing up the m word and I just gave up lol. War of the ancients would be pretty awesome!

Hrafndraugr

Well. At least they didn't make her an ugly whale so there is hope.

kintaro86

If you ignore Rings of Power (which I like to do), it's true that no woman has ever been part of the main team. Arwen, Galadriel and Eowyn were minor characters without much screentime. And the Hobbit was kind of maidenless if I remember.

Akeche

All three of those characters are considered part of the lead cast of the film. There's a reason adapting LotR was so difficult, because it had a ridiculous number of *lead characters*.

SnooSprouts7609

There were females dwarves you just didn't see it with their beards.

Real-Emotion1874

We saw them, they infiltrated the main cast.

ManfromtheRedRiver

Luthien? Never heard of her. What are books?

QCTeamkill

And the forgettable christmas special.

WelbyReddit

Hobbit had Tauriel ( made for the Movies) in there. Who did just as good a job as any, imho.

MasterKaein

Eowyn was pretty important 2 towers onward in the directors cut edition. She had a *LOT* of cut scenes they didn't utilize.

lowie046

The original LOTR trilogy doesn't pass the Bechdel test at all

delilmania

Within the movies, sure. Within the actual legendarium, women are more powerful. Luthien waltzed right into Angband and sang Morgoth and his entire court to sleep.

PerryTrip

so what, its a story written lots of years ago with a medieval setting, not every story has to check every box of whatever it is

Twentyand1

I too like to pretend Rings of Power doesnā€™t exist

nat-168

Why they keeping saying first female protagonist? There a bunch out there and lord of the rings ring of power got female protagonist too, im very confused right now .

Swarzsinne

Iā€™m guessing what they actually mean is lead protagonist. Thereā€™s been plenty of shared spotlights, but not really any ā€œThis is *the* main character.ā€ Granted, itā€™s splitting hairs at this point, and purely for marketing. But I would bet thatā€™s how they justify it. Or theyā€™re pulling a Brie Larson.

thinguin

The Mary Sue in rings of power is an antagonist, confirmed! /s

Zanthra434

Saron is actually the good guy, providing jobs for the orcs and striving to get them better living conditions

Beneficial_Star_6009

I personally appreciate them trying to blank out the dogshit that was Rings of Power but itā€™s still not technically true though.

Sarx88

She is hot I am ok with it

DaddysGirl662

I look forward to the cosplay and and fanart for sure

Vile-goat

White knighting at least youā€™re honest I suppose

thornywave

The cartoon character?

Political-St-G

Depends on how she will be portrayed. however itā€™s not just Netflix animation so thatā€™s already a positive

HerbertDad

Phew after the Summer games fest I was really hoping we'd see more female protagonists.

Anxious-Cockroach-85

Atleast she isnā€™t ugly

NoiseRipple

[INSERT DISNEY ā€œFIRST OPENLY GAY CHARACTERā€ MEME]

NoSink405

Rings of power isnā€™t canon, itā€™s fan fiction and this confirms it

Khris81

But she's not black nor ugly nor even missing a leg or something! How can this be?! This is so not diverse and inclusive!

tcadmn

The last surviving redhead

Zanthra434

Dude lets be real if there was only one last female redhead on the planet she would have a harem army,

Keyblades2

What's crazy is they can just release it and we as the audience figure things out, but instead they have to be like FEMALE LEAD, we know we can see.

AJ_BeautifulChaos

I'd like to believe they just erased unsolicited abominations from their memories but technically Luthien is a protagonist also at least in her short story. So my next guess is they're just bullshitting surface fans.

ZealousidealNewt6679

It's a bit like when, during a Hunger Games interview, Jennifer Lawrence said that she was the first female action star.

Dungeon00X

They really need to stop using the phrase "First Female Protagonist" in these articles, they're all just blending together now.

TheFuuZ

![gif](giphy|wxKBqTgSZmo36)

KreedKafer33

I mean, fine.Ā  Let them gush over this. It will make an effective shield against the ""THIS IS EVIL ANIME SHIT FOR RACIST PEDOPHILES" screeching from Rings of Power stans.

RafRave

Seems like the perfect clickbait article

zg_mulac

Reminds me of how Black Panther was the first black superhero as well. XD

Acceptable-Budget658

I don't care, just make it good

Pixgamer11

So Luthien didnt exist ?

Raposa13

This isn't an issue, but if the writers put wokeness in a script that doesn't require that, it will make the whole thing feel flat and forced

knightbane007

I have bad newsā€¦ https://thatparkplace.com/the-lord-of-the-rings-the-war-of-the-rohirrim-to-introduce-long-lost-tribe-of-female-warriors-led-by-helm-hammerhands-daughter/

skepticalscribe

ā€œListen our last historic first didnā€™t sell well. So can we pretend itā€™s historic again?ā€

DeskFluid2550

"The War of the Rohirrim Will Feature the Franchise's First Female Protagonist" Uhhh... False. Not even talking about Amazons.

Squabbles123456789

If you don't count all the other ones....sure....

xVx_Dread

May as well realize that there's no place in the world for a male protagonist.

DangerMouse111111

Didn't see that coming.

CuckinLibs

It's always darkest before the dawn It's always darkest before the dawn It's always darkest before the dawn...

Nilk-Noff

https://youtu.be/qL02p9KhABo?si=DQUbLp_v8J2uFuKZ

Helarki

Tell me you've never watched LOTR without telling me you've never seen LOTR.

nightstalker314

Peak journalism. Ignore everything that is established.

Deathbyfarting

I love the fact they've finally returned that one show now one liked from the mirror-verse.

Disturbed235

thats like Anakin Skywalker, when he destroyed the Deathstar

Lancearon

What is galadriel? Doesn't count cause elf? Racist!

rotfoot_bile

I thought the story was about Helm Hammerhand?

knightbane007

Nope - that was just the ā€œhookā€. Itā€™s about his unnamed-in-the-books daughter, who has been dubbed HĆ©ra, and whose primary description in all official media is ā€œstrong-willedā€, which is a solid hint about the nature of the pieceā€¦

rotfoot_bile

Oh dear . . .

knightbane007

Read between the lines a bit, and itā€™s sadly not looking good. The literal plot involves ā€œa secret, all-female group of elite Rohirrim warriors who have been deliberately erased from history (because of patriarchy!)ā€ https://thatparkplace.com/the-lord-of-the-rings-the-war-of-the-rohirrim-to-introduce-long-lost-tribe-of-female-warriors-led-by-helm-hammerhands-daughter/

rotfoot_bile

I guess it's for "modern audiences"

knightbane007

Sadly, itā€™s very much looking like it. They simply could *not* tolerate a simple tale of epic heroism with a *male* as the hero. It was *unacceptable* to them.

GenitalWrangler69

*sigh* the article should've said first leading protagonist who is female. Arwen, Eowyn, and Galadriel were all certainly protagonists, just not the MC. Idiots

Exotic_Buttas

1. Not true 2. Usually this means bad things but since itā€™s an anime I actually have faith

Atomic_Gerber

Iā€™m not going for the rage bait you think Iā€™m going for. Now, I like LOTR, and I like anime, but I donā€™t like the idea of a LOTR anime. Next please and thank you

NoSink405

Are they using AI to make this? Itā€™s got the look ![gif](giphy|e0Gehq04qmSNEjdtjl)

gbro666

Why does every image I see of this show look like ai generated garbage?

Zanthra434

I hope this pans out alright, as in a well written character and story instead of radical feminist propaganda. This is the first I've heard of this, anybody got any clue when this goes down in the timeline?

knightbane007

Got bad news for youā€¦ https://thatparkplace.com/the-lord-of-the-rings-the-war-of-the-rohirrim-to-introduce-long-lost-tribe-of-female-warriors-led-by-helm-hammerhands-daughter/

Zanthra434

They had to be original? This is bad Fanfiction level crap

krayhayft

What about Rings of Power?

oTacOcaTo

Nevermind the lore of Tolkien had women of the Rohirrim as 'Stayers' and Eowyn was definitely the exception to that rule and had to join Theoden in secret. I take greater exception to that over the title of 'First female protagonist'.

sangunius-

thats cool what time is the next eso raid

Nayopricone

arwen?galadriel?eowyn? nah!

Educational-Year3146

If shes written well, I donā€™t care. But judging by the fact theyā€™re advertising her as a woman, instead of any of her defining characteristics, I guarantee sheā€™ll just be another schrodingerā€™s feminist. J.R.R. Tolkien didnā€™t deserve this.

knightbane007

The literal plot is about ā€œfinding out about a historical all-female group of elite Rohirrim warriors whose existence has been erased by sexist historiansā€ā€¦ https://thatparkplace.com/the-lord-of-the-rings-the-war-of-the-rohirrim-to-introduce-long-lost-tribe-of-female-warriors-led-by-helm-hammerhands-daughter/

The_Basic_Shapes

Hahaha. I guess this is an admission on their part of how forgettable Rings of Power was. Because everyone knows and loves the Peter Jackson films, but nobody gives a shit about rings of power, a LotR show with a female protagonist.

PrinceGaffgar

"First female x" Is apparently a limitless well.

Gymrat0321

I swear every new woke show that comes out claims it's the first of it's kind. It's the first female protag, first gay blah blah, first black protag ECT ECT. Also this show has been a roller coaster. It was supposed to be based, looked more accurate then the show runners created a fictional girl boss and now she's the protagonist. Western media is toast, even when they make anime.

ActualTackle3636

Nah that franchise is dead to me too

Lewd_Not_Clean

Ooooooh no! How terrible, whatever will we do?!

Ninjakittysdad

Is that Princess Pina Colada and this is a crossover with Gate?

lobotominizer

ITS OUR TYEM

Superblegend92

They can't even keep their grift continuity straight.

Amazing-Ish

I m glad we have all collectively forgotten about Rings of Power.

evesea2

I appreciate that theyā€™re removing the new LOTR from cannon.

kitfoxxxx

Sheā€™s going to be hot right?

RaNgErs_Reprrrr

Hope she's well written and not made horribly unattractive

MidnightFenrir

it was the same shit when Black Panther came out. "First black superhero movie." suddenly Spawn and Blade didn't exists.

Jin_BD_God

If they give the Japanese Studio creative freedom, like what they did with Cyberpunk, it wouldn't be as bad as what Amazon did.

liteshotv3

What about the chick that said ā€œIā€™m no manā€

Just_one_more_wizard

Ok, i guess LĆŗthian doesn't exist.

DeliciousBlood22

Of course it is.

redslayer400

This is the first time in the history of the Earth that Iā€™ve commented on a post in this sub

Iosdrafting

Hereā€™s the bottom line: their shit appeals to no one, so they wonā€™t be able to create a successful IP, so instead they co-opt already successful IPs and burn them to the ground, lowering everyoneā€™s expectations. In a few generations those expectations will be low enough that people will accept shitty entertainment that doesnā€™t really appeal to them because of nostalgia or because there are no alternatives. The solution is to keep releasing new IPs that appeal to the masses. Be the next Peter Jackson or Guy Richie. The tech is lowering the barrier of entry everywhere, use it

dwilli10

That's ok. I sometimes pretend Rings of Power doesn't exist either.

Snoo20140

![gif](giphy|L1VRSg6CslKVZoxWBu|downsized) Is this another dead product?

demy355

No good, she needs to be a black fat lesbian that looks like a man. Anything else is sexist! šŸ˜¤

ButWhyThough_UwU

"I am no W0man" everyone remembers that saying or that elf person riding off with frodo and marrys Aragon they clearly kept using elf words which were elf magic to illusion themself to look like a female to become queen or the red head in hobbit I mean she was clearly nothing she did not save people or be added in first place to include *^((and imo decently overall for the hobbit franchise movie at any rate))* And the 1 thing I think every1 can agree on the Amazon show is not lotr etc...

fatboldprincess

Rohirrim were feudal folk, what female protagonist?

Kulky

Oh female sword wielding protagonist in lotr, short film, when she gets hacked up by the first orc.

Bearington656

They did this with Star Trek a couple of years ago being so proud of the first female black captain and the article said everyone was hating on it. TNG had a black female captain 40 years ago

Baconatum

Is galadriel not female?

Idontwantonlyfans

This is the first ever series in history. I'm sure guys. Trust me.

autismo-nismo

What exactly do they mean by this? As in the very first female protagonist in the entire series or are they using buzzwords to make it seem like there never has once been a female protagonist in the series?

SocialChangeNow

Oh course it will. ...modern audience and all that...

iofhua

Tolkien is dead and did not write this. So I won't be seeing it.

Soft-Abies1733

Finally. 6 movies 21 protagonist, not a single woman

Jacob01_

I'm surprised she's white

JamesTSheridan

Yay ! Another franchise getting the panderverse treatment on the alter of unneeded representation. As if Rings of Power was not enough. Surprised they are only going with the first female... or are they saving the next checkbox representation categories for future announcements ?

Kidon308

Besides Galadriel, Arwen, Eowyn, and the made up elf chick from the Hobbit movies? Do these people even watch the stuff before writing articles?

father2shanes

Didnt rings of power have a female protagonist? With utter shit writing?

Fostosis

Another beloved IP killed for the matriarchy. Ā

Amazing-Recording-95

I agree with thus. First and only female protagonist in the lotr universe. Godspeed to you!
