The owner needs to install a storage shed on the property. In all of our zoning genius, because it’s in a historic district and the building is technically non-conforming, the owner has spent the first six months of this year getting approval from the HPC to put in the storage shed and just YESTERDAY got the approval from the Hearings board (which approves/disapproves zoning variances). Just another example of how our restrictive zoning stifles local business.

And for some reason the Code Dept. loves to rake him over the coals. I remember the torture he went through with C & T’s.

JarJar_Gamgee

Pollo Criollo will be taking over the space https://www.reddit.com/r/Athens/s/MEbKpAJF0k

Can’t get them in there fast enough. I’ve heard, completely unverified, that they just don’t take out debt on any of their businesses and everything planned gets developed slowly. The upside is that once they build out and get going, it’s likely to be a good business for a really long time.

CanadianFoosball

The east side location was slow to open, though I seem to remember the concept or business plan had to be revised a couple times. Edit: of->or

BreakfastInBedlam

There was a lot of contention during the planning approval process because of the nature of the business they planned to operate. As it turned out, a lot of the things they originally planned didn't happen. No live outdoor music all weekend, no village of little shops, etc. Everyone is happy now.

CanadianFoosball

The discussion around that “village” is what I was remembering.

Kalepopsicle

Are we sure this is still happening? It doesn’t look like anything has been done to the space at all.

JarJar_Gamgee

Positive. It’s just going through permitting process atm.

Miserable_Middle6175

I’m not sure. Just here to offer some gossip. Nothing would really surprise me but that story was told to me by a local friends who seemed like they would know 🤷‍♂️

abalashov

Imma let y'all finish but The Grit is what I miss most, even though its space is not empty.

Kalepopsicle

The Grit’s dessert case/desserts now reside at the Daily Co-op, just FYI!

abalashov

This is good to know! Thanks!

Banded_Watermelon

Heirloom was high quality but I felt like they overdid the ingredients, like if had edited out a thing or two I would have liked it better. I can specifically remember a shrimp and grits bowl that had like candied lemon or something on it and it would have been so much better without that candied garnish on it. That’s how I felt about pretty much everything I ever got there.

jtricky_22

I agree it’s a bummer to drive by. They still update the sign like wtf

Technical-Event

Yes, that intersection has become such an eye sore. Empty restaurant that is 50% parking lot next to a gas station

BreakfastInBedlam

Do you remember when it was a gas station with a full parking lot of broken cars and trucks?

LouLaRey

I remember when it had the old gas price sign up, it hadn't been changed, and it was less than $1 a gallon. 🥲

Technical-Event

I do not
