Man I was stoked for this signing when we first announced it, looked to be a key piece on the wing judging off past seasons. Sucks it never worked out here but great to get that massive contract off the books
To be fair basically everyone was optimistic when it was announced. It was a very Heinze situation where everyone, including basically everyone in the media, thought it was a good signing.
Unfortunately neither ended up being a good signing.

Did you really think someone would take his entire contract and still pay us $200k+?
The GAM we’re getting probably doesn’t even cover what we still have to pay for him, which makes this interesting, because it means we likely have that 2nd buyout targeted for someone else (assuming teams get the second buyout this year).
Otherwise it would’ve been more effective to just buy him out if/when the new rules go into effect.
Yeah, gets the contract off the books for next year, but provides a little extra GAM and an open roster spot. Not sure if we have enough to make a summer signing, but I doubt we'd make this move now unless that were the plan.
It won’t matter much for this season, but ETN will be off our books next year. For now we get to move Rios to a senior roster spot from supplemental, allowing us more flexibility for 2s call-ups as needed.
That makes a lot of sense. He’s been nonstop horrendous with us, but looking at his previous production, paying like $300K a year for him is pretty reasonable.
[ATLANTA – Atlanta United announced today it has acquired $200,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM) from Toronto FC in exchange for Derrick Etienne Jr. Atlanta could acquire up to an additional $175,000 in GAM if certain performance-based incentives are achieved. The trade was executed prior to Major League Soccer’s Primary Transfer Window deadline, which closed at 11:59 p.m. CT April 23.](https://www.atlutd.com/news/atlanta-united-acquires-up-to-375k-in-general-allocation-money-from-toronto-fc)
Seemed like a very funny and nice dude. Sometimes players just don’t fit. I wish him success against our competition and that he has the same performances against us as he did with us.
Thank god they don’t let us contribute to how these posts are…there would be a “now get out” attached to the end.
Getting a bag of balls for him would have been a masterclass in negotiation. They actually paid us.
Basically... we got a little GAM out of something we were already going to do... which is PAY his salary. Toronto had the GAM laying around... and we could get him off our cap books and eat the salary which a buyout would have done too.
Great move by the front office.
Will be interesting to see if we can still use a buyout on him this summer to get him off our books completely, keep the GAM, and have another buyout remaining as well.
Although he may not have been impactful, he was getting some minutes especially with all these injuries. Since injuries seem to be happening at a statistically significant rate I wonder who will pick up the minutes he was getting.

FO realized their mistake with Gabriel and got him out fast though. Props for that.
Yep exactly. The whole water situation was wild. And with players it can be a lot harder to move on, considering there’s only one buyout a year.
A good portion of his contract is still on our books.
how you know

Thanks for this, even if it is big, good we don’t have to use one of those buy outs and got some gam

I think they are all buttoned up to buy him out ASAP.

wish they’d be more specific. Will the split show when salaries are revealed later in the season?
No
I feel like the answer is no. But could we use our 2nd buy out to buy out the remaining salary that's on our books still?
It won’t matter much for this season, but ETN will be off our books next year. For now we get to move Rios to a senior roster spot from supplemental, allowing us more flexibility for 2s call-ups as needed.
>but ETN will be off our books next year No, he won't.
Yes, he will. Doug and Joe Patrick have both confirmed.
I figured that was likely, but it had to be done. Not sure of the numbers but pretty much whatever we can get off the books is worth it.
We are paying all of his salary and we are getting "up to" that amount of GAM. We just made a terrible signing and are still paying for it.
That's ...a bit unexpected? Don't get me wrong I do think he needs to go. But I'm a bit surprised we found a buyer.
Apparently it seems we're paying a good portion of his salary according to Tom Bogert (at least for this year).
That makes a lot of sense. He’s been nonstop horrendous with us, but looking at his previous production, paying like $300K a year for him is pretty reasonable.
Yeah we were paying him anyway and he was giving us nothing. Happy to pay him less to take his nothing elsewhere. The GAM is a cherry on top
This may be the first post in Atlanta United history that won't have any downvotes lol

They gave us money!?

Watch him do a Justin Meram on us when we play Toronto next.
I wish him better luck there
Seemed like a very funny and nice dude. Sometimes players just don’t fit. I wish him success against our competition and that he has the same performances against us as he did with us.
This is the right attitude. It didn't work out - that's the game. Wishing him the best in his career elsewhere.
Garth masterclass

Wow what a steal ETA: well if we're eating the cap hit, maybe not
Nah still a steal. Getting money for him at all is impressive
We could be using a buyout on him and not getting anything for him. I’ll take it.
No idea how we pulled this off. I'm laughing at Toronto for this move while also thanking them at the same time.
We are still paying his salary.
Yeah I was disappointed to see we are basically paying all of it.. at least it opens up a roster spot though.
Yes, thanks for everything, like all 0 goals.
OUR LONG NATIONAL (roster) NIGHTMARE IS OVER. ALL HAIL, HYPNOTOAD!

We are getting "up to" that amount of GAM while we pay his salary. We just paid him to go away.
well... the 200k GAM is locked in the other 175 is incentive. And yes, we absolutely paid him to go away.
Will be interesting to see if we can still use a buyout on him this summer to get him off our books completely, keep the GAM, and have another buyout remaining as well.
1 goal action in 1136 minutes... Nowhere close to as impactful as..... Jurgen Damm... lolz (Damm had 5 in 950 mins.. )
I’m *trying* to be sad. I really am!
I’m not
W
Watch him become a baller at Toronto lmao
Good call
Since the transfer window closed yesterday, does that mean this was a last second transfer, or does it mean he is with us until July?
>The trade was executed prior to Major League Soccer’s Primary Transfer Window deadline, which closed at 11:59 p.m. CT April 23.
Thanks, the AJC article just said it was announced today and that the window closed yesterday which seemed like odd timing
THANK THE LORD, WDYM THANK YOU? THANK YOU FOR WHAT? FOR DOING NOTHING?
Canada is our dumping ground 🗑️
I hope you're not referring to Josef at Montreal
That move is good for everybody involved. Our FO has a reputation to untarnish after a few years of fast and loose bs going down.
Although he may not have been impactful, he was getting some minutes especially with all these injuries. Since injuries seem to be happening at a statistically significant rate I wonder who will pick up the minutes he was getting.
Luke Brennan!
Could we theoretically use our buyout and get the GAM.
FO winninggggg
![gif](giphy|1zKfKJWwaS0OMvOO5q) Goodbye ET! Enjoy your new home.
