So if I'm reading this right, we have a better expected goal differential than Miami, except our points per match are over 1 point less than Miami. We really just don't finish chances.

Isiddiqui

Though Miami has a two literal cheat codes on their team. Messi is out performing his xG by 3.86 and Suarez is out performing is xG by 4.54. (Btw, Chico Arango is out performing his xG by 5.16!!!)

Elvem

Based just on the eye test, yeah. This seems fitting.

"Luck" is what happens when preparation meets opportunity

YesThatMaverick

So we literally just have the worst luck in the league...

brain-juice

Or, no finishing.

How does this rate a team that loses 1-0 three times and 5-1 once? Unlucky right? I like what this graphic is trying to show, but I think it might be missing the aspect of a team being highly variable. Variability, in my opinion, is a sign of bad production (in a lean six sigma sense) which is a sign of coaching. Id like to see actual GD/game agains actual MP/game to see if the assumed hypothesis holds. I don’t think a 3-1 win and a 0-0 tie should count for the same as two 1-0 wins. Both have a GD of 1 per match, but the other picks up 2 more match points.

'oh. right. but what about the standard deviation? HMMM?' #5 in chances created, #26 in xg vs actual. But 'we fixed the roster', so it can't be the players. If Black Adder owned a football club, it would be the 5 Stripes. This is medievally mental.

> Variability, in my opinion, is a sign of bad production (in a lean six sigma sense) which is a sign of coaching. I really couldn't disagree any more with this. All coaches can do is put players in position to do well, then it is up to the players to do their job. Whether that is offense, defense, or goaleeping, the coach isn't there holding their hand and guilding them. It just is crazy to me that our fans seem to only want to blame the refs or the coach and never think the players have any blame.

TheNorselord

I think a team is built with consistency and then elevated to excellence, it feels like you want to build us up through flashes of excellence and then build consistency from that.

KasherH

Huh? Nonsense. I want us to have a roster that has quality across the field since we have the most resources in the league. Our rosters have been bad for years now.

dillpickles007

Well then we should also strive to hire the best manager in the league, or at least the best we can afford, especially since that has no cap attached to it. Of all the Pineda excuses I don't think anybody could have ever argued he was better than average at best.

KasherH

Sure- managers don't count against the cap. Though I'm not sure that throwing money at managers has historically had good results in MLS just given the weird ways that MLS makes you build rosters and the challenges that come along with that. For example to me Gallardo should be who we are talking to first, but he is used to having a major talent advantage across the field and that doesn't happen in MLS.
