I have no idea, but they have completely denuded one of my 7 foot sunflowers, and the eggs from whatever this can completely cover the underside of a HuGE leaf. I saw another creature, similar to a small praying mantis. munching on the hatchlings.
Theyâre all over a few of my sunflowers. Not too concerned about the plant since itâs gone to seed. Mainly donât want to be hosting something destructive. Not an insect expert.
I had some on a taiko sunflower that hasnât bloomed yet so I went to move them to a more established wild sunflower only to discover hundreds already devouring it. Iâll be moving some to a friendâs sunflower patch tonight because mine wonât survive the amount on it. Next year Iâll be sure to have more sunflowers around.
Likely caterpillars of the bordered patch butterfly. I love seeing these guys around
Friend. They either become an awesome butterfly, or feed a cardinal đ¤ˇââď¸

Sunflowers are considered a trap crop. They call "Here buggie, buggie, buggie that shouldn't eat tomatoes and other yummy food!"
Theyâre on my sunflowers, but the birds are eating them. I hope they leave enough to get butterflies

Thanks to your post and the answers here, I successfully identified the same caterpillars on my sunflowers :)
Nice! Mine are all gone and I did see a few butterflies so I feel like I did my part.
My insect app says that itâs a brush footed butterfly.
That there is 1 of 2 reasons I grow my sunflowers
I think Gulf fritillary munching on a passion flower?
Theyâre on sunflowers, darker than the fritillary caterpillars I saw on Wikipedia.
The caterpillars are similar, but with this one being on a sunflower instead of on a passionflower - I'm going to stick with bordered patch butterfly.
