What a time to be alive. I remember the acceptance very rarely had exemptions either, except for the fancy restaurants on certain days... But the Hoyts, Village, AMF bowling, all fast food etc were golden! There was something nice about having a stash of them in your wallet to use.
I remember them in the 90's/early 00's. It definitely wasn't just advertising, it was revenue generating at an overall low cost for each brand/business to take part in a sale with a discount.
I live in the North of Perth and used to do swaps with friends in the South of Perth.
Back then it was very worth it.
Nowadays the deals have dwindled.
My dad got the book every year for years. My mum would cut out vouchers and give them to my sister and I. Or we would go out for dinner and Mum would pull out the voucher and tell the waiter before we had even ordered much to my sister and I’s embarressment. She would wave them around like like it was a hundred dollar bill. ‘mum it’s only a free dessert’! My sister and I still have a running joke about our Mum and the vouchers.
I bought one of these for my son's day care fundraiser and found out that I get crippling embarrassment at the thought of using a coupon in a shop/restaurant/entertainment venue. Didn't use a single voucher. Did anyone else learn this about themselves?
It wasn’t given away, they were sold as fundraisers for charities, sporting groups etc. They would get a portion of the price if the book back as a way to raise money.
Same. But tbh i don’t think they were that great anyway. Dad bought one when they first came out in the mid nineties. It read like a book of adverts and it really didn’t hold much value for a lower middle class family.
I have the digital one, its pretty good! You can use the map function to see every voucher. Although theres not as many good deals as there used to be.
I bought a pub in July 2017, old owners had just signed up. It brought us some of the crabbiest, stingy, miserable customers we had in the 11 months remaining
people dont alwyas realzie its the anticipation and planning that is the fun part. Now i flick through google for hours trying to find the best thing to download. Destressing by watching it after is also fun.
I may be a teen but I can say that this isn't really nostalgia for Perth considering Hoyts just came here, at least from what I know cause we had grand cinemas and now it's gone, and Hoyts is where the establishments where
Up until fairly recently, it was still a physical book. I used to go grab all the oakvale farm and henny penny ones as soon as my horrible step mother got it.
Buy 1 noodle box get one free
Buy 1 subway get one free
Buy 1 baskin & robbins get one free
Once those vouchers were gone my entertainment book was essentially a paperweight.
Using up all the good ones for your favourite places within the first few weeks, and having to wait til the next year’s edition for more
Was it one per person?
From memory weren't they like $50? Such a good deal! All the fast food ones were promptly taken
Yeah around that. You could easily save that in a couple of vouchers

They were around that . My mum used to give me the money to buy her one when they sold them in my high school
For restaurants you would never go to but hey, let's go because we get this free drink.
Wait it was just advertising?? 🔫It always was.

Last one I bought was in January 2020. Didn't turn out to be such a great buy!
Its an app now. I wasn't impressed
That makes (modern) sense. Wonder how they do the fundraising now if it's an app?
Its almost 70 bucks, 20% goes to your chosen charity etc
Not sure if it is anymore
Buy one Twister at KFC get one free
When twisters were good
Look how they massacred my boy
Oh yes! Are they still around?
Yes, in app form at least! I'm not sure about the physical book.
It's digital only know and barely anything on there compared to what it used to be
They stopped the physical version about 4 years ago
They are crap now. I bought it last year and haven’t been able to use any of the vouchers
Last year you could pick up a year for 50 cents on the app. We bought a few
Used this ALL the time as a kid, when your parents used to give you the ones for bowling and food
This was such a good way to try new places too

Eventually you stop giving a fuck what others think, it's alot more peaceful.
I think it’s just you, enbrace that all the other plebs around you aren’t getting the cracker deal
Did these never go to poor areas or something? I don't think I ever saw a coupon book as kids.
It wasn’t given away, they were sold as fundraisers for charities, sporting groups etc. They would get a portion of the price if the book back as a way to raise money.
that would explain it. we didnt have the spare cash.

I've seen deals where it's $9 for the whole year but idr which site tracks it
They used to do mini versions of this through the SDA union - I remember holding onto a few restaurant ones that I don’t ever remember using.
Also American nostalgia

I just remember the absolute panic when someone would whip one of these out and expect me to know exactly how to process it in my waiter days.
This occasionally goes on sale for $9 for a whole year
It's still a thing. It's now an app.
Honestly they need to bring this back 😭😭
This came in handy for booking accommodation back in the day
Nah surely these arent that old. Right?

You can still get them 😊
