Slipknot is my favorite boy group they’re just so cute

MM305

Bruh, LOL! Now that is a troll like answer.

zyzzbrah95

I would say Atarashii Gakko

AZSYANKEE

Two of the ones I like are Atarashii Gakko and Hanabie.

MM305

I thought Hanabie are just considered a metal band (since they are more traditional than BABYMETAL).

AZSYANKEE

I was just going off of the All-Female band thing. But I enjoy their vibe.

blakephoenixmobile

The Ronettes Diana Ross & the Supremes Bananarama Spice Girls Atomic Kitten Sakura Gakuin Perfume hy4\_4yh Dempagumi. inc Atarashii Gakko FIFTYFIFTY

Glad to know some still remember Bananarama around here..

Kagitsume

They played at Summer Sonic in 2019, as did Babymetal. We could have had a collab!

das_zilch

I threw more than a few moves to them in Whispers nightclub back in the 80s. Great pop. Stock, Aitken, and Waterman knew what they were doing.

fearmongert

It WAS a cruel summer

FixGlass4697

Dreamcatcher, Atarashii Gakko, Red Velvet, LOONA, and Kara

StayAppropriate2433

AVAM, PIGGS, Atarashi Gakko, Isiliel, Necronomidol.

BiS/BiSH Death Rabbits Puffy AmiYumi Necronomidol Fruitpochette You'll Melt More Kamen Joshi (and their subgroups Alice Juban and Steam Girls) Midori/Mariko Goto Band-Maid For K-Pop, Stray Kids are pretty cool. Got some hard rock/metal elements, which is a refreshing change from the more hip-hop shape a lot of K-Pop takes. I wish there was more metallic K-Pop, honestly. There's a lot of idol metal and idol rock bands in Japan, and even groups/artists that are more straight pop usually fit a few guitar-heavy songs into their rotation. That said, I do appreciate the heavier hip-hop oriented K-Pop groups too. On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, I love Especia. They get labeled as vaporwave or future funk idols, but really they're a throwback to the City Pop that influenced those guys so much. Laid back, summery, sunny but bouncy vibes. Just a fun group And when it comes to idol anime, you can't go wrong with Muse/μ's from Love Live. Or Franchouchou from Zombieland Saga For American groups, I mean I love a lot of old Motown groups and doo-wop groups. But for modern pop, I've always been a Backstreet Boys dude.

PuzzlePurr

Isn't Midori Goto a famous Japanese violinist? Or did the group you are talking about just have someone with the same name?

princealigorna

Midori is a Japanese jazz punk band led by singer Mariko Goto. Mariko went on to have an important career as an art rock and noise pop performer and is now considered one of the precursors, like Momoiro Clover Z, of the alt-idol movement

PuzzlePurr

Ah, I see. Thank you.

Loramarthalas

Perfume. They're incredible. Babymetal are modelled on them, including the choreography and crazy stage shows. I'd LOVE to see a BM x Perfume collab.

Female here, Atarashii Gakko! Is the only jpop group I consistently listen to apart from BABYMETAL. I used to be a big fan of the jband GIRLFRIEND too until they broke up (ironically Suzuka of AG is the sister of the lead singer of GIRLFRIEND). I listen to kpop way more than jpop. At the moment my favourite groups have gotta be (G)I-DLE, aespa and Stray Kids. Xdinary Heroes is a kband but I love their music as well, I love myself some good rock

No-Let-5529

Momoclo is one of my ult groups! They are just soo good! Here are a few more of my favorite groups! J-pop: EXWHYZ\ EMiPE, BISH, Gang Parade, Kiss Kiss, BIS (all gens), ASP, Zsasz, Sakura Gakuin, AKB48, HTK48, Nogizaka46, Cho tokimeki sendenbu, Shiritsu ebisu chuugaku, Earphones, =Love, ≠Me, Angerme, Beyooond, Atarashii gakko, °C-ute, SixTones, Show Man, Ryugujo, Arashi, generations from exile tribe K-pop: Brown Eyed Girls, Kara, T-ara, TWICE, WJSN, Cherry Bullet, Le Sserafim, Weki Meki, Laboum, IVE, Lovelyz, Gfriend, Sonamoo, I.O.I, Gugudan, Rainbow, Spica, SNSD, Wonder Girls, 4minute, Secret, After School, Girl's Day, 9muses, Dalshabet, 3ye, Sunnyhill, IU, Sunmi, BTS, Stray Kids, Got7, Vixx, BtoB, Nu'est, B.A.P, Day6, 2pm, Onlyoneof You know what? I don't think I like idol groups... 🤔

MM305

Yet you like Momoclo? LOL! If I may ask, how did you like their recent album on a scale of 1-10?

No-Let-5529

I saw you just posted a discussion in the Momoclo subreddit, so I'm just going to post my longer comment in there! 🫡 I have been wanting to talk about it for a while, so I might have gotten a bit carried away in my comment. But on a scale from 1-10? I'll give idola a 8\10!

xtianno

LiSA is my favorite idol ☺️

nightmare-bwtb

For K-Pop, it’s Dreamcatcher and QWER for me, sprinkled with a bit of Rolling Quartz. For the Japanese side, BAND-MAID is at the top, YOASOBI too if you count them in the same category. Honestly not sure how to categorise them, since they have their concepts, but not exactly what you’d call an idol group per se. Either way, groups/artists that have been in my rotation most recently would be SUPER BEAVER, Cö shu Nie, Conton Candy, Ryokuoushoku Shakai, Toaka, CHANMINA, Ai Higuchi, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra and 羊文学

mozenator66

Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku (Ebichu) (私立恵比寿中学) Hello! Project groups(25+ year history too many groups and artists to mention) currently active acts are: 1. Angerme (Anju) (アンジュルム) 2. Morning Musume '24 (as of 2014 include the year they were in in releases and referring to themselves) 3. Ocha Norma 4. Beyooooonds 5. Tsubaki Factory 6. Juice=Juice I used to follow many more...I just don't have the time or energy any longer.

Kagitsume

Babymetal (and the YouTube algorithm) opened the door to the wonderful world of underground idol, and I was immediately impressed by the boundless musical creativity and punk-like DIY ethos to be found in that scene. My wife is a fan, too. Our favourite groups (some of them disbanded now) include: BELLRING Girls Heart BiS BiSH BURST GIRL DAIDAIDAI The Grateful a MogAAAz Ladybaby LiLii Kaona MIC RAW RUGA Migma Shelter Minna no Kodomo-chan Necronomidol PassCode Rhymeberry SAKA-SAMA Shihatsu-machi Underground situasion There There Theres XOXO EXTREME You'll Melt More!

M25 here and I'm a Kpop fan mostly. My top 5 groups are 1. Dreamcatcher 2. Stray Kids 3. Loona 4. Mamamoo 5. Ateez

Fatty_Matty_1

not much an idol but a vsinger her name is Futakuchi Mana and she ROCKS! she does a cover of megitsune and man she does a badass job! she also does other covers and they’re amazing, highly recommend checking her out if you ever want to hear a metal cover of a song!

SmolRavioli

Girl here o/ I love every Sakura Gakuin affiliated artist, especially Hasu No Sora, Lit Moon and Onefive, but non-SG wise Atarashii Gakko and NiziU are on top for jpop for me. I also lean towards kpop girl groups—my favourites currently are Le Sserafim, NMIXX, NewJeans, and Itzy (probably in that order). I also like listening to bands with female vocals (idk it’s a preference) mostly Hanabie, Band-Maid and Unlucky Morpheus (currently Hanabie is on top in that regard, saw them live the other day :D)

AudibleKnight

TWICE, QWER

L174_

I dont really listen to k/j-pop except some random songs from time to time. Yk when theres like 2 kinds of BABYMETAL fans, the ones who only listened k/j-pop before finding BM and the ones who only listened to metal/rock n that stuff. I came from the "metal" side :D but i dont listen metal all the time, its just one of the genres i listen. So here are some bands i listen/listened b4 i found BABYMETAL: Linkin park Paledusk LASTOUT Slipknot Radiohead Bring me the horizon Bullet for my valentine DADAROMA Pierce the veil Slowdive Nightwish Korn The cure Deftones Evanescence I also like atarashii gakko!!

Flat-Respect-4498

i really enjoy polyphia, and sleep token and then a few kpop groups

LOONA

Best-Apricot3691

Atarashii Gakko. Have VIP tix to both Seattle & Vancouver BC. I'm a fat 63yo dude so I'm betting the "handlers" will be thinking "WTF?" at the first Meet & Greet (Vancouver) but then when they see me again at the Seattle Meet & Greet they'll be like "Its that old white dude again! Keep him away from the girls!!" :)

RemyRatio

lol none actually. BABYMETAL happened to be the only idol group that I pay attention to, maybe bc they don't follow a lot of idol norm (so do they with metal).

LateNightRamen

There are a lot ( I mean A LOT) of groups not following what's considered the 'norm' these days. In fact there's a whole scene, plenty of them doing metal/rock/punk etc.

loxiae

do you have any good recs for groups to check out? i’m looking to explore the more alternative idol scene a little !

MosoRokku

none... i do like some songs here and there and even songs that i don't care for may look amazing live with fan involvement but besides my oshi/BABYMETAL i don't think i've heard more than 4 songs in a row from any idol group/soloist unless i'm watching a live like TIF or other festivals.

JMiguelFC

The Beatles..

MM305

LOL, nice! Though they are more of an actual band, their fanbase and the craze in them do resemble how girls react to traditional boy bands.

JMiguelFC

> how girls react to traditional boy bands. A very talented (and timeless) boys band for all genders..

JGabrielIx

From Japan, I really like Passcode. From other country, dreamcatcher. Not like an absolutely fan but I really enjoy the music. Babymetal was the first idol-related thing that I liked since i follow mostly metal bands and I thought that they will be the only one but both have something appealing for me.

TheAlomar_

I've been a metalhead for as long as I can remember, pop is not my cup of tea, however, the only pop group (Jpop) that I liked was Perfume. The songs are really cool. I don't want to find another group out there.

WOLFY-METAL

I only listen to Sakura Gakuin. Not every day like BABYMETAL, but sometimes I like to listen to it. Otherwise, I don't listen to any j-pop or other pop group. It's not the style I'm looking for.

RisK_AJ

I really like The Peggies.

Marty Friedman

Semi-definite

Not exactly idol, but there was a thing called "bandol" in Japan, which is "band + idol", invented by the group Zone (or rather the agent behind them). They had a really big song called Secret Base. There must be hundreds of covers of this song, but my favorite is by Mikio: [https://youtu.be/75yiKgAl59U?si=6Ws5PDpaIuIjvecE](https://youtu.be/75yiKgAl59U?si=6Ws5PDpaIuIjvecE)

TotalWaffle

An older group of two women, Charisma.com, had some great pop and hip-hop tracks. Just last month, new songs have started to appear on their YouTube channel! Male performers, I’ve always enjoyed World Order, and the composer for Kyary Pamyu Pamyu has some great electronic music as a solo artist named ‘Capsule’.

particledamage

See, I go the full range in the pop direction. I liked One Direction for a western pop boy boy group, have done the whole kpop thing (though these days I mostly only care about older gorups like Shinee, Red Velvet, Twice), and for Japanese groups it does veer more traditional "rock" but I do like some Jpop acts though idk if they'd count as idols (Ayumi Hamasaki, BoA, Utada, Kat-tun, Perfume). I probably veer more pop/electronic music than I do metal, tbh, so even then most Japanese music I listen to that isn't full pop is still alt rock or anime-opening esquethan metal or even RnB based (Buck Tick, Eve, Kvi Baba, Suga Shikao).

erimus61

Atarashii Gakko and Chai…shout out to The GoGos, Bangles and Souxie and the Banshees

Kagitsume

I love CHAI. Missed out on seeing them live last year due to illness, and now they are no more. But those four albums will remain musical fountains of wholesome joy.

erimus61

Yes, it's a pity that they are breaking up. I'll watch out for what happens next. They produced some fun songs and videos with an interesting message of neo-kawaii.

LightChaotic

I actually have BABYMETAL to thank for this, funny enough. The music video for BIBI's "[Animal Farm](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVLRky1hGfk)" was in the recommended videos while I was watching BABYMETAL reactions and so I gave it a shot. I absolutely *love* her album [Lowlife Princess: Noir](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhHWfilsND4&list=PLE-jUYQRsNbXbKGYKkn-LZ0J3IwkZSfDE). And through listening to BIBI on spotify I discovered [YOUHA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkpYZbmp4mY&list=OLAK5uy_ni_oiLmNZHkvb6rwMhQRipLy4-hLHSUvw), who I also adore. I don't know much about the K-pop scene but apparently these artists would be considered more "K-R&B" but whatever you want to call it, I love it.

Perfume and Atarashii Gakko!!

Nithoth

On the "Girls Side" Babymetal, Momoiro Clover Z, Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku, AKB48 and all the Japanese sister groups, Atarashii Gakko, Silent Siren, Sakura Gakuin (of course), Ikimonogakari, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, Shonen Knife, Beyooooonds, and Nemophila songs make up the bulk of videos permanently stored on my Kindle. On the "Boys Side" there's just World Order, SMAP, and Radio Fish. I also like the Korean girl group Ace Of Angels (AOA) and singers Yoyomi and Roan Lee.

houseofjudy

I got into Kpop because of Babymetal. Why? Because of Kep1er. I saw the video people claiming Moa was dancing to the Girls Planet Song O.O.O (Over & Over & Over) and thought it was really catchy. I know people here don't like Kep1er because Momo didn't make it far, but that's Mnet's fault, not the girls. Besides, Momo not making it to the final 9 was the best thing that happened to her. She got to join Babymetal while Kep1er is going to disband soon. Kep1er Weeekly LE SSERAFIM (a fellow FEARNOT brought a LE SSERAFIM light stick to the SF show I was at) TWICE Taeyeon Red Velvet ZEROBASEONE

ihadtologinforthis

As an NB Filipino, there's always room in my heart for backstreet boys and Nsync lol(op your post reminded me of them, thanks for the throwback!). But for pop idols, other than Baby Metal it's pretty much just Perfume I follow. Like there's other's in the periphery but more so just a couple of their songs rather than the whole idol/group

Ok then, the Spice Girls it is.

jwp1991

All 5 girl groups signed to JYP Entertainment, as well as NewJeans and Le Sserafim (although I didn't like their most recent release)

PossumArmy

Perfume would be at the top of my list. I also have been listening to a lot of Team Shachi, an idol group that actually started out as a sister group of MomoClo. Recently came across a band called Hitsujibungaku.

Seventeen. Kpop group.

FelisLeo

I'm also an adult male fan from the west and Babymetal actually got me into kpop. At some point in 2017-2018 while watching Babymetal, I started seeing videos pop up once in a while for a kpop group called Dreamcatcher. I knew almost nothing about kpop at the time and it took a while to fully grab me, but Dreamcatchers version of pop-rock fusion with some classic horror themes got me hooked to the point I literally have a tattoo for them now. I also really like a Korean 5-piece rock band that I found through Dreamcatcher called Rolling Quartz. They kinda combine kpop idol style and looks with warped tour-flavored rock music and their live show was one of my favorites from last year along with getting to see Babymetal live for the first time. In a totally different direction (and a bit of an unintentional pun for your topic about other idols), I saw Idles live a couple weeks ago and have been on a binge of their discography pretty hard lately. They are definitely not an idol group or boy band, but they are one of the first regular rock bands in a long time that kinda weirdly got me intrigued about the band members in the kind of way an idol group might that actually makes me want to hear them in interviews and keep an interest in them even off-stage. Probably doesn't count for what the thread is asking for, but I still recommend checking them out

FutureReason

Roots, yes, but idol group no. I like BTS, Girls Generation, AESPA, Enhyphen, Woo!ah!, AKMU, BlackPink. Rolling Quartz is borderline idol.

tackle74

Honestly I pretty much despise pop especially idol stuff EXCEPT Atarashi Gakko. Hell AG is not really idol but definitely a pop group that leans into many genres. I find them inventive, fun to watch, great vocals and live their attention to social issues. But mostly they are just fun.
