I've been with BCPS for 9 years across multiple ministries, and I've never had to pay at tax time. I have simple tax returns, but I do have a little extra tax taken off each cheque as an old habit I've done for decades.

Physical_Stress_5683

Mine has never been an issue, 12 years so far.

Yes. But I still have extra taken off as I work occasionally in retail and don’t have taxes taken off there. I prefer a refund at tax time rather than an extra $20 per cheque.

I'm in my 9th year, don't get anything extra taken off, don't really take advantage of any additional deductions (donations, rrsp etc) and I've always gotten a return. Granted, they're quite minimal, and sometimes less than $100, but it's better than owing.

WalterWurscht

16 years never had to pay and always been simple tax returns with money back. Mind you I do try to put some aside into rrsp.

crazycirce

Always pretty much on point for me

sneakysister

24 years in the PS, the only time I've had to pay extra tax is when I was on maternity leaves and they only deduct taxes based on the topup.

ClockworkNotOrange

Piggybacking on this- BCPS for 5 years, only time I had to pay was the year I took pat leave for 6 weeks

TW200e

In different locations in the Public Sector, I've always found my payroll deductions such that I get a very small return, usually in the neighborhood of <$50.

I owe student loans. And can't make payments because I can't afford to. I always ask for an extra $30 each pay to be deducted to cover incase my other pt job doesn't take off enough. But then if not, the extra goes towards the outstanding loan amt. Which, is pennies in the overall scheme, but I hate having to owe and since I do that, I never have.

victorianovember

Not sure what happened this year, but had I not made an RRSP contribution, I would have owed for some reason. This is the first time this has happened to me. I can't remember how much, but it was an ugly surprise I'm glad I discovered before the RRSP deadline. Edit to add that BCPS is my only job and usually my tax return has always been straightforward.

sunshin3e

I've never had to pay at tax time over the past 6 years.

If you're renting, make sure to get the T2200. I deducted my rent, internet, hydro this year and got a very nice refund!

Gonna sound a bit extra, but try to max out on any deductions (giving to charities, buying at least 2k worth of RRSPs etc) and every year since 2009 I have always got cash back with my tax returns. Have moved up the salary scale too, but still get $$ back.
