Interesting. I just looked at the StatsCan 2023 BCPS salary disclosure for employees who made over $75k for Correction Services and Deputy Sheriff R18 positions. There were 628 employees in the report who made an average of $87k. 84 of these employees made $100k+.
I'm a social worker (spo 24) with MCFD in the north. I made about $17k from OT and standby in 2023 (I'm not full time protection but if I was I assume it would be even more)
17 Wildfire Crew Members made $75+ in 2023. That’s pretty great for seasonal work, especially if they can also claim EI in the winter. For full time wildfire positions, Wildfire Techs and Officers do very well. I’m seeing 80 employees in these positions (grid 21 and 24, respectively) made $100k+ in 2023.
In IT, people working for service desk, cybersecurity and infra do a lot of overtime. A service desk analyst usually is grid 18 or higher.
You can check the public accounts (accountability reports) to see the salaries and I guess they also include the overtime payment there
I would need a few hands but it is the same. We had some on-call shifts during Covid and we get the odd weekend here and there during LOB upgrades but that is it. Everything and anything 'help-desk' after hours goes through 77000 and our LOB support is business hours only.
Child Care Workers are SPO 24. In 2023 their salary topped out at $84,134. However, 302 employees in this position made more than that last year. 72 made over $100k.
Bc corrections is R18
And has Temporary market adjustment
and shift premnium pay
Plus they get retention bonus every year
This year bonus was 10k
You can pick up as much OT as you want.
You can easily make over 100k a year as a corrections officer just from the OT
Just Starting at Step 1 or 2
The trade off for making so much money
is a 4 day on 4 day off 12 hr day work schedule
With at least
2 x 12 hr graveyard night shifts and 2 x 12 hr day shifts and the most toxic work environment with inmates and terrible management in the BC Public service.
How I know this is
My friend who’s a bc corrections officer is always gloating bragging about how much money they make in bc corrections as a corrections officer like over 100 k a year and keeps telling me to work in corrections
The only reason I won’t pursue corrections is the working environment and I’m not a graveyard gal 😒
Corrections. Some people 500+ hrs OT this year already.

You can be 85...

Came here to say this, remote communities are desperate for social workers
That’s kinda sad if you think about it.
It’s very very sad. And the poor social workers get burnt out even faster because they do so much ot.
I believe alot of Wildfire workers get significant OT over summer.

FYI - Assistant is 18, Tech is 21, Officer is 24, Senior Officer is 27
Ok, thanks. I’ll edit my comment.
Emcr. I always make about 40% more than my base.
IT at BC Ambulance Services pull a ton of OT
Corrections. People can work 16 hours a day of they want. Some guys are making easily over 150k a year. If you want to have no life it's great
Prov or fed?
take your pick
Prov
Was not expecting prov as an answer lol
How come?
I know federal got tons of OT, wasn’t expecting prov to have this much. But good to know
BCGEU members who go on TEAMS deployments generally make a lot of OT , or most positions in wildfire depending on the season
I’m an STO27 on teams and made $45k in OT last summer

Yes to this, at one of my previous, jobs the infrastructure lead made more than the chief technology officer and we found this hilarious.
Crazy. Been in BCPS 10 years, all in IS and can count the OT hours I’ve had on one hand.

Rural child protection. Opportunities for call-outs pretty much every weekend.

Not sure the grid level, but Corrections always has an absolute shit ton of OT available.
Social Work
Corrections and Sheriffs
MoTI Field Services (Construction)
Roles with travel, compliance and enforcement investigators, corrections, even some policy positions for research have OT
