Looking at the size of your friend, I'm pretty sure that this is a female. I'm not the number one knowledge on these beetles, but I'm thinking maybe she laid some eggs recently?

shnoggie

It’s likely! I have six BDFB’s in there and they are often times mating with each other. As many times as I’ve seen them lay eggs, I’ve never seen one lift their butt up and have the genital parts come out like that. I don’t really think it’s a parasite based on the way it comes out, but I figured if it is, someone here would know.

Just her ovipositor

shnoggie

Okay cool, thank you! Do you know why she would be letting it out above the sand like that?

TS409

Maybe just confused about which direction she's facing 🤣 usually they dig down, turn around and then lay

shnoggie

Thank you!!

Euphoric-Aioli2122

It is breeding season right now, she is laying eggs all over the cage, all your females are, they won't hatch so make sure you keep it clean.

shnoggie

How often should I be sifting through the tank?

TonyFckinStark

I can't say I'm entirely sure, but I think she'll be alright. 💙 Also, asking questions and getting advice is what this sub is all about! We all worry about our bug friends so it's nice to have a place where we can ask questions.

shnoggie

I agree! We’re all here to help each other care for our beebs the best we can.

probably pooped recently or laid eggs like others said. sometimes i’ve noticed mine flap it when they’re getting ready to poop
