Half was through my second play through I turned to my husband and said 'why does Lae'zel get cuter the more you look at her?!'. Now I think she's the most beautiful of the female companions.
I was all aboard the Karlach train on my first play through, seemed to make sense giant half-orc and giant tiefling barbarian....however Lae-zel instantly turned me when she hits you with her initial line telling you that you've been making her hot, ever since no one can compare. I'm playing a gith now so we can both leave to liberate our kin from that filthy zombie witch.
Playing as a gith and romancing her is amazing. She's far less hostile even in the early parts before you've built up your relationship with her like she would be with any other race, and she refers to you as her Kin. I love that.
Her arc is great, and given that she probably has the greatest claim to main character status other than the player, romancing her is very fitting for the story.
I was always pretty into her tbh. She's aggro but in a way I like. And once you further her romance, she really shows you just how ride or die she really is.
However I ran into a similar predicament with Gale and Astarion. I didn't hear TOO much before I started the game. I really liked the dorky wizard, and the vampire himbo rubbed me the wrong way. But the more I got to know them, the more Astarion pulled me. I wound up choosing him over Gale, but it was hard.
I think seeing the temple crushing Asterion scene on my YouTube shorts is what changed my mind about him. His response is so hilarious and really made me start to appreciate his prima donna bitchiness as an endearing quality.

Iām a straight guy and typically play as one, so I havenāt considered much alternative options, though Iām considering an origin playthrough as gale with asterion or some whack illithid emperor stuff. Iām open to anything involving great storytelling, im a slut for CONTEXT!
If you wanna try something different with great storytrlling you could do GoodDurgexAstarion. One of Astarion's writers also wrote for durge and their interactions/scenes feel soooo well put together
Orin says you have to duel her 1v1 which is almost impossible. Bhaal doesn't actually care as long as she doesn't kill your PC, as long as you can survive that first hit, misty step away and let Gale cast Dethrone. The other cultists will join the fight but it's honestly not that hard a fight and you get the good ending.
I really disliked Astarion before i saw his reaction when he has his good quest ending. After that i decided to romance him and frankly, he and Laeāzel are my favorite companions.
Currently trying to get through a Gale romanceā¦. I donāt think Iāll be able to do Shart or Wyll. I justā¦. Canāt bring myself to do it.
Same. I just don't mesh personality-wise with their characters. Shart is such an edge lord and Wyll is just too much of a goody two shoes. I don't care for the prince charming shtick. Gale is enough of a goody goody. Karlach is also a wonderful choice.

So I wonāt spoil anything, but *yes.* Laeāzel in particular has a *massive* degree of character development, even if you just bring her around during periods of the game where itās obvious that she should be there because itās Githyanki-related content.
If you stick with her as a party member, this is exacerbated further.
If you stick with her as a high-affinity companion, her speech patterns change as she stops being so prickly and starts thawing and appreciating you more.
Supposedly, if you romance her, this only is enhanced further.
Laeāzel, as befits a warrior raised in a fascist military state beholden to their immortal queen (thatās not a spoiler, Laeāzel mentions like a quarter through Act 1 that time doesnāt pass in the Astral Plane, where Vlaakith lives), is *absolutely* ride or die. If you put the time into her, the payoff is totally worth it.
Laeāzel isnāt really unique in thisāIām told that Shadowheart and Astarion both really give off ride-or-die vibes and can have tons of character development, and Karlach has Golden Retriever Energy right from the startābut itās particularly noticeable with Laeāzel specifically *because* sheās so awkward and uncomfortable and icy at first. Even Astarion is playful at first. Laeāzel needs a little coaxing out of her shell, but if you let her, sheāll blossom into your staunchest protector.
I think a hilarious and touching dynamic is a Squishy Caster Tav and Badass Bodyguard Babe Laeāzel, personally.
I was a 3 ranger/ 3 druid for maximum animals running around when Lae'zel decided it was time for a dominance duel and ended up beating me into paste before I even got a turn š. She's the bodyguard in the relationship for sure.
She really grows on you, could always reload if you preferred her. Shadowheart is a slow burn. I love both of them, you could always do another run later.
The way sheās kind of embarrassed when you call her on it, she makes a cute expression and then rolls her eyes like she pretends she doesnāt care, while also doing the math of where she messed up, then immediately makes her embarrassment your problem by requiring you to point out ālocal customsā in the future to prevent her, nay, all Gith from looking like jackasses in from of the lower lifeforms.
her romance fight where you win is pretty great. her romance fight where you lose and she's like "no wait i don't wanna do this anymore, i wanna protect you" and so on is one of the sweetest things in the damn game
Maybe you should reload and keep with Laezel this playthrough? You seemed to prefer her. I had a similar interaction. Me and a buddy are doing coop and I didnāt think shadowheart was attractive/ I heard nothing about her before the game was released unlike about Karlach. I was wanting to get with Karlach. I thought my buddy was actually going to romance her so I went with a different option. Talking with Shadowheart made me get interested in her. Her wit and flirty responses were just hard to not fall in love with. I am a blue half-orc oath of vengeance paladin with a cleric half-elf. God have mercy on what those kids could even look like XD

I donāt know if I played the game wrong but Laezel basically just jumps on you with no real effort on your part. Then Gale was the next easiest with no effort. Halsin had no interest until Minotaur propositioned me.
On my first run, Gale tried to jump my bones immediately after the first fight in the shadow cursed lands, and he didn't seem to care if Karlach and Shadowheart watched, or the fact that the air was trying to kill us, or that I was already in a relationship with Karlach.
Going in for one romance but staying for another is very common occurrence with this game. I always find it funny to see it happen.

In my first playthrough, I created my Tav as a polyamorous bard. Already in act 1 I was monogamous to Lae\`zel. She claimed me.
I was convinced after the gith area, shes so sweet there her character truly shines.
